File sharing problem between XP and MAC when using Airport Extreme

I recently got a Time Machine to replace my flaky Linksys Wireless N router and since I've done that I can't connect to my PC running Windows XP and was able to before. I have made sure my firewall settings are correct and have gone through many different settings on Time Machine but still no luck.
I have my PC directly connected via ethernet to the Time Machine and my Mac is wireless. I'm able to ping the IP address of the Mac from my PC but can't ping in the opposite way.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

btw the error is
"Attempting to copy to the disk "Guy_s iPod" failed. The file name was invalid."
and then it says
"The iPod "Guy's iPod II" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to."

  • D I need the firewall on in my Mac when using Airport extreme base station?

    Hi all;
Just wondering if it's necessary to turn on the firewall in my Mac when using the AEBS.
AEBS is connected to the net and then my Mac connects to AEBS.
    There's already a firewall built-in as I understand it.
    Thanks.

The operation of NAT and DHCP on the AEBS will prevent someone from the Internet directly accessing your Mac.
Enabling the firewall on your Mac would add some protection against someone local wirelessly accessing your Mac.

  • Printer Problems "Network host is busy" when using Airport Extreme

I have an Airport Extreme wireless network. It is connected to a brand new HP Laserjet and my network consists of 1 MacBook Pro also running Parallels and Windows XP as a virtual machine, 3 PC Laptops (running XP) and a PC desktop (running XP).
The printer is an HP Laserjet 2727. I just installed it last week with new drivers. I ran test pages from all the pcs and the mac and everything seemed to work fine until I get up the next morning.
Everyday when I go to use the printer, there's something wrong with it and I have power it and the wireless down and back up again.
One error I keep getting is "Network host is busy, will retry in x seconds". Other times I get nothing, it just sits there doing nothing. Again I have to power everything back down and up again and then go recheck each computer and run tests from each.
I work from home, I can't keep doing this every couple of hours. HELP!

  • Problem setting up shared printer between PC and Mac with 10.6

I am trying to setup a shared printer between my Mac and PC. I have a HP K80 attached to my PC (which has Vista Home Premium). I have a Macbook pro with 10.6. I have shared the printer on the PC side. From the Mac I have added the printer via Windows Printer sharing, but for some reason I cannot print to the printer. Everytime I try to print, the job just pauses. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Thanks I installed the gutenprint drivers and tried this, and now all working:
    http://guides.macrumors.com/Printingto_a_Shared_PCPrinter
Printing to a Shared PC Printer
This article describes how to print from Mac OS X to a shared printer connected to a Windows XP machine. It assumes the computers are already networked and that you can access the PC's files. These instructions are relevant for Mac OS X 10.2 upwards. The instructions may work with Vista. I don't have the means to try it.
    1. Find the IP address of your PC - go on Start > Run. Type in cmd and click run. Now type in ipconfig /all and hit enter. This should give you the machine's IP address.
    2. Share the printer. Open up Printers and find the one you want to share. Right-click and choose Share. Now click the 'Share this printer' radio button. Now choose a sharing name. Keep it simple - e.g. HP, Office, PC etc.
    3. Open a web browser on your Mac and type localhost:631 in the address bar
    4. You should now have the Common UNIX Printing System web interface up. Click the 'Add Printer' link.
    5. Type a name for the printer, making sure you don't include /, # or space characters. Click continue.
    6. Select Windows Printer via SAMBA from the Device list and click continue.
    7. For the URI, you need to include a username and password for an account on your PC. You then need to enter a URI in the following format: smb://username:password@ipaddress/printer. So for example smb://johndoe:[email protected]/HP
    8. Choose your printer's make, or if you have a PPD file for the printer, choose that. Click continue and choose your printer's model. Now click Add Printer.
    9. Done! You now have a list of options for changing the various properties of the printer.
You don't need to be on the same workgroup or domain as your PC, just the same subnet. If both your Mac and PC are connected to the same router, either wired or wirelessly, then you should be on the same subnet.
    Thanks guys

  • File sharing problems between Vista 64 bit and iMac

I have a week-old iMac and am trying to completely network it with my wife's new Windows Vista 64 bit Dell Studio laptop. Everything seems to be working correctly with the exception of not being able to directly log into the iMac from the laptop even though the iMac is visible in the Windows Vista Network screen. File sharing is turned on with all user accounts active. Both computers are visible on the network. The Vista laptop has Windows firewall turned off and McAfee Security Center firewall turned on.
    Help and suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • How do I correct File Sharing problems between 2 Lion installs?

I have having a strange problem with file sharing between 2 mac's that have Lion Installed. One is a MacPro with a clean install of Lion and the other is a MacBook that was upgraded with Lion. Both systems have file sharing enabled (just public folders for now) and I cannot connect from the MacPro to the MacBook. The other direction works fine (MacBook to MacPro).
The MacBook shows up in the finder of the MacPro, but when I click on it, it says "Connection Failed". It does then even when I "Connect As" and explicitly put in the user and password of a user on the MacBook.
The only way to connect is to use the "Connnect to Server" optin in the finder window and use the IP address of the MacBook and explicitly use a valid user and password (guest will not connect from this method either)
I have rebooted both machines and the router and have "repaired permissions" on the MacBook HDD.
    Any ideas?
(I'm sure I can do a clean Lion install, but this is a real pain to get all of my wife's data backed up properly)
    Thanks!

  • Sharing Library Between PC and Mac

    Hello all,
I recently transferred my iTunes library from the PC to an AirDisk. The annoying thing is that when I open iTunes on the Mac, it does the "Updating iTunes Library" which takes a while to complete. When I open iTunes on the PC, it does the same thing. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Or is this the nature of sharing an iTunes library between PC's and Mac's?
    Thanks
    Mac mini (1.42 GHz PPC) | MacBook (2.0 GHz C2D) | Mac OS X (10.4.9) | PC with XP SP2

Sorry I should explained it better. I'm talking about how it seems the OSX iTunes is doing some converting when the library was last opened with the Windows iTunes. It takes 30 minutes for this coversion to complete. If I open the library in OSX, and it was last accessed by the OSX iTunes, there is minimal delay. I assume there is some conversion because (1) the iTunes Library file increases in size; and (2) the kind of file reported by OSX changes from iTunes Database File to a Unix Executable File.

  • Link problem between PCs and Macs

Hello.  We have 3 Macs running OSX 10.5.x and Adobe Std CS5, and they share their Illustrator creations, images, etc., on a NAS file server.  Recently, I downloaded the CS5.5. trial version for a PC running Windows XP Pro and on the same network with same file access and security.  All machines use CIFS to access files.
PC user will create an Illustrator file in one of these shared folders on the NAS and link in images from another shared folder on the NAS and save it.  When a Mac user opens the Illustrator file, however, none of the links are valid so the Mac user has to re-link those images and re-save the file.  What change(s) do I need to make on the PC-side to stop this problem?  Does the PC need to be on CS5, too?

Thanks to both of you for your help.  We found out that the PC and Mac show the absolute path slightly differently when connecting to our NAS. However, if we create an ai file with linked images on the PC, save it, and then open it in the Mac, even though the links are off we can fix all of them if we simply re-link one image and then "Ignore" the rest of the pop-up error messages.  There are less (or no) link issues if the images are in the same folder as the ai file, but that kind of defeats the advantage of linking over embedding.  We need to have one central images folder since the same image can be used many times over.  Is there any way to force Illustrator to use relative paths instead of absolut paths?  For example,  if I have a share name "Sales" and three folder within:  "Images", "ABC company" and "DEF company", can the ai files I create in ABC company contain links like, "..\Images\image01.eps" instead of something like \\NAS2\Sales\Images\image01.eps?   Would be nice if Adobe Illustrator had a preference setting of something like "Default location of ai files" where I can set it to, \\NAS2\Sales\, and then any documents I create would use that setting as a link starting point.

  • File sharing problem between Windows 7 & Lion

I am running a windows 7 laptop and my mac mini with 10.7.
I have a single file share setup on the mac which is NTFS based (confirmed permissions are read/write).
I am unable to connect to the Mac from the windows computer.  When I enter \\192.168.1.102\sharename I am prompt to enter the mac's login account info. When I enter the only account info I have it stays in a loop and I never log in.  It was working fine in Snow Leo.
Here is what I am also seeing on the File sharing prefs on the mac:
Even after entering the correct password several times, it still tells me its incorrect.  I have reset the password a couple of times to make sure it wasn't that and rebooted a few times and still the same thing.
    Other things I have tried"
    - Disabled firewall on the Mac
    - Disabled / Enabled File sharing and removing / readding the shares again (rebooting afterwards)
    All didn't make any difference.
Not sure why it works on Snow and now not on Lion.
    Please help!
    Thanks,

I am having the same problem. Have been searching the web for a solution, as well as posting to several Mac forums.
I found the link shown below which gives a procedure that is supposed to work:
    http://www.trickyways.com/2011/07/file-sharing-mac-os-x-lion-and-pc-windows-7/
However, it doesn't work for me. When I get to Step #6 and enter my password, I keep getting an "Incorrect Password" notification. Also, when I try to do Step #9, the "Windows Security" window never appears - in fact, nothing at all happens.
By the way, I am able to see my Windows 7 shared folders on my MBP, but cannot see my MBP shared folders on my Windows 7 system. Worked fine under Snow Leopard.
I'm bookmarking this forum and will check back if anyone can come up with a solution. I assume this is a bug in Lion and have reported it to Apple.

  • Problems with cursor and shortcuts when using JNLP services on MAC OS X

After invoking the JNLP services on a MAC I loose the ability to set the cursor and invoke keyboard shortcuts. On Windows this is not a problem, so I believe it is a bug and I have reported it to Apple. Meanwhile, I would appreciate if someone could help me with finding a work-around. To identify the problem run the following code with Java Web Start (i.e., you need to add the program to a jar and launch it using a JNLP script). You also need to include the javax.jnlp package.
Observe that the cursor changes to cross-hairs when entering the circle. After invoking the Open file menu item, the cursor does not change any longer. Shortcut key do not work either, but if you open the menu and close it again without selecting any of the menu items, the shortcuts are OK again.

Barbara, Thanks very much taking the time to respond to my posting. Your input and directions were just what I needed.I accessed the print settings in the pull down menu, setup the print options including the color profile for Elements and the Printer to sRGB, and printed my picture. This resolved all the invalid color problems I was having, but I did notice that there was a hint of magenta overall in the picture. I had read an article that said to use Canon Color Matching instead of Color Sync to prevent that but I couldn't make that change in the pull down menu. I tried in the Presets dialog box but that didn't appear to be possible. Should I make that change as well?
Also, in my travels through Elements 13 I notice under Edit->Color Settings that there were options for No Color Mgmt, Optimize for Screen, for Printing, or ability to chose one or the other (real time I assume). How do those options fit into this scenario?
    Thanks again

  • File sharing problems with T500 and T410 and a desktop all running XP Pro SP3

Others have had similar problems with what appears to be an overriding of Windows file sharing by Access Connections.
My three computers, printers and internet modem are networked and working fine both wired and wirelessly except that while the desktop computer in network places can "see" shared folders on the Thinkpads, access to them is denied. Access to desktop shared folders from the Thinkpads works fine.
All the usual sharing settings have been checked and verified by Microsoft support; it does not so far have a solution.
Could this issue please be addressed more thoroughly and/or suitable documentation referenced? I have read the blurb about Access Connections but can't make a lot of sense of it.
