File Sharing System

Hey,
Sorry if this is a bit basic for some people & a dumb question!
I'm wanting to set up a file sharing system between 10 - 12 computers.
I was wanting to have a Mac Pro as the main computer where the files will be stored, with another 10 - 12 iMac's accessing the files.
I already have a network hub, but I know that the new iMacs & Mac Pro are all wireless. Is it possible to setup them up so they can access the files from the Mac Pro wirelessly?
And also that they can have a permanent shortcut on the desktop of each iMac to the Mac Pro? Rather than having to mount it each time?
Or would it be better to have the network hub setup?
If they are able to access the files wirelessly are they able to work on the file from the MacPro without having to copy it across? I know you can do that when there is a physical network connection between the computers. Is this possible wirelessly with the Macs?
Any advise, suggestions, help would be most welcome!!!

The alias will remain, but the volume it is connected to will become unmounted; you may want to place the alias in the list of login items for that account, and add the password if any to the keychain, which will automatically supply it when requested if the keychain password is the same as the local account's login password.

  • I purchased songs thru itunes and used a file sharing system to get other songs. when i went to sync it came up with error -69. just for the stuff i purchased yesterday and the free doownloads. whats the issue?

purchased songs thru itunes yesterday and also thru a free file sharing place. i added the songs to itunes yesterday & today i went to sync up and all the songs from yesterday have a error -69. what is the deal?

Usually a 69 indicates damage to a file ... but it's a bit suspicious that everything acquired in a short time frame is showing a -69. That has me wondering about disk damage.
Perhaps try running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive (or whichever drive you've got the 69-throwing content on).
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup (especially if it's running on the C:\ drive). The scan should take quite a while (especially on the C:\ drive) ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, do the items still give you a -69 when syncing?

  • How can I file share with another person if both of us are using Mac operating systems?  Do we need to use a third party file sharing system or does apple have this capability?

How can I file share with another personif both of us are using Mac operating systems (one of us using a Mac laptop and the other using iMac).  Our intention is to have a working document that can be changed by both parties over time and both parties will have visibility to the others changes.

  • How can I allow network users to use File Sharing on 10.8 Server?

I am in the process of setting up a new OS X 10.8 Server. I have exported/imported the network users from my previous OS X 10.6.8 Server using Workspace Manager. I have re-entered the passwords of the users. I have existing clients running (stil logged in).
I have set up the File Sharing service in Server.app. I have several mount points. I have made the Users mount point available for home directories over AFP.
Now, the system administrator can connect to the server and get access to the file shares. So the basic file sharing system works.
Also: the users on a client can get there password verified (e.g. when unlocking screen protection) by the server. It is just AFP they can't get access to, while the system administrator account (OD /Local on the server) can be used. So, the password in the server is OK too. It seems to be a matter of privileges.
But no network user (OD user in directory /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 on the server) can get access. Where can I give network users privileges for File Sharing on the server?
I did try to add either the "Open Directory Users" group or a specific user that was imported into com.apple.access_afp. If I do that, there is partial success. I can connect to the server from the client with a user account other than system administrator from the server (but connecting is slow). But Mobile Home Sync does not work:

    Hi Gerben,
Try creating a brand new user, that's not imported and see if that works. Every user/group has a little gear in the Server.app/Users or Groups which allows specific access to specific services, perhaps filesharing is off in that section?
Is your DNS setup properly? Can you verify that clients can see the FQDN of your server?
After setting up the Users folder for mobilehomes, did you check whether the group and the separate users have access to filesharing? I am able to select the correct homefolder /Users and restrict the homefolder size.
    Goodluck!

  • Have PC connect to internet through Mac with firewire and file sharing

Hi, I have a network of 2 computers, one Mac and the another PC. The Mac is connected to the internet and the PC is connect to the Mac through firewire. I have managed to set up a file sharing system, both Mac and PC read each other without any third party applications. This is working great, however, the two computers successfully connect only when the PC is turned on first, or else the Mac will say that there is no device connected to the Firewire port. If the Mac is on, and then the PC gets turned on, I have to restart the Mac in order for the connection to be established. Is this normal? Is there a fix for this?
I'm also interested in having internet on the PC as well. How will I be able to do this through a firewire cable?
    Thanks

    Run System Preferences->Sharing->Inernet Sharing->Firewire
    It's that simple.

  • File sharing reports too many users connected

SPECS: Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 2G RAM, Mac OS X 10.6.4. Other users in office also running similar hardware and Mac OS X 10.6.4.
CLARIFICATION: This Mini is used as a file server in a small law office (4 other workstations). It is running Mac OS X Client, not Server. I refer to the machine as "the server" but wanted to be clear the operating system is the same on all stations.
HISTORY & CONFIG: This system was setup in November 2009. It provides simple file sharing storage for a 4-user law office and runs Retrospect (version 8.1.626) to do some local and network backup operations. At the time it was setup, it was also running Now Up-to-Date Server but that program is no longer supported, and it has been removed from the computer (May 31, 2010). In late March 2010, I installed Daylite Server as a replacement for Now Up-to-Date. All stations are running Mac OS X 10.6.4, and have always been at the most recent Mac OS X 10.6.x revision within a few days of the release of a major update.
PROBLEM: Occasionally, clients cannot connect to the server (and I don't have the exact error message -- next time it happens, someone is supposed to get a screenshot). When this happens, if you go to the server and open the file sharing control panel, then click "options", you will see an impossible number of people are connected. The first time this happened was on April 28, 2010, when it reported 41 users were connected. Mac OS X Client has an upper limit of 10 simultaneous user connections, so you can see this number is not possible. Additionally, these are "phantom" logins because you can execute this command in Terminal to see the IP addresses of any connected users:
    netstat -n | grep '.548'
And when I do this, unless there was someone who had logged in prior to the "phantom explosion", it never shows any connections. On two occasions, I've actually been in the office late one night to do maintenance, checked the server before I left and found 0 connected users, then got a call in the morning that the first person who attempted to connect was blocked and the server showed 10 or more users connected.
I do not believe this is some kind of security breach. The server is not Internet-accessible, and as is shown by the netstat command, there really isn't anyone logged in anyway. I consulted with Marketcircle (makers of Daylite) because it seemed very coincidental that I installed their software just prior to the beginning of this problem, but they claim Daylite does not make any use of the Mac file sharing system. But, again, since these aren't real users, I suppose it's possible a bug in their software is somehow upping the Mac's connected user count erroneously?
Restarting the server always fixes the problem -- until it happens again. This Mac Mini is a pretty simple station -- just runs Daylite Server and Retrospect Single Server, plus the basic file sharing. Anyone have any ideas why this keeps happening?

I would say odds are likely this is correct. On at least two occasions I can think of where I verified everything was okay and later discovered a "phantom explosion", a Retrospect backup would have run. Our backups typically run at 3 AM. Is this a known issue with Retrospect? If so... not sure why it doesn't happen all the time. And in my own office I have a pretty similar setup on an entirely different computer that multiple people connect to, and it never does this. Color me confused.

  • File Sharing - notifying secondary users that a file is already in use

We are using a Lion server for file sharing. How can we set it up such that if one user has a file open, a secondary user opening the same file will be notified that the file is already in use (making it read-only)? We had multiple users opening the same file concurrently and making changes to it. Not a good scene and kind of flies in the face of using a file sharing system.
I am not the server administrator, but trying to guide the person who is. Thanks for your help.

Is there a way to find out which program/service might be opening these files?
Yes, use handle or process explorer from sysinternals. (see also).
How is your labVIEW program structured? Could it be that your LabVIEW program itself holds on to the file from e.g. a previous file IO operation? Make sure references don't become invalid (e.g. via a "use default if unwired output tunnel) which would prevent the file from getting closed properly for example. Your program should open the file once at the start of the program and keep it open for the duration of the run. This way you should not have any intermittent problems accessing it.

  • SECURE file-sharing to one individual

I am an accountant, and in the past we always were able to use the Acrobat.com file-sharing system to SECURELY share files containing sensitive information to one person, without making them public for anyone with the link to see.  Is that no longer possible now that Acrobat is using the cloud to share files?

oof.  THANKS a ton for this.
so just so i understand - currently the drag and drop (or CTRL+V) option from withing iTunes brings the /file/ "into" the app on the phone in some way - so that you can access that file once you open the app.
alternatively i can put files in dropbox and access these from my the dropbox (of skybox or whatever) APP on my iPhone is another method to get files so that my iPhone can access them (when i have wifi access or a cell phone connection) - however not all Apps on my phone are going to be able to open a file from dropbox is that right?
i mean, i have an app on my phone that i need to use but the only way they have to access the file right now is if i EMAIL it to myself and then find the email and then click on the attachment and then it asks me if i want to open it in this app.
i guess some apps will work like this if i open the file from dropbox? and some will require me to load or paste them into the hinky iTunes interface?
can you help me with what Documents5 will do for me in the context of the above methods? will it get me some simplified workflow?
right now getting into iTunes is not ideal since this means i have to MOVE THE FILES to my MBP in the first place so that i can drag and drop them into itunes and then i have to manually sycn my phone - major pain in my opinion.
i mean, it's 2014 - shouldn't i have an icon on my desktop that i can drop files to and have them show up and /work/ from an icon or app on my iphone - full stop no exceptions?

  • Backup/File Sharing Recommendations

Can anyone recommend an affordable local network solution that serves as a backup location (for Time Machine preferably) and a file share?
    A little history…
We have a small business office of 5 iMac's running 10.6.8 that currently back up via Time Machine with a 3rd Gen Apple Time Capsule.   Our file sharing system is simply sharing every local drive or attached external drive with everyone else on the network.  We would like to move this all to one location, on our local network, if possible.
We could keep the backups on the Time Capsule and then have a separate solution for file sharing however our experience with the Time Capsule hasn’t been a good one.  It had to be replaced 2 years ago due to a failed hard drive (Apple support ended up replacing it for free) and now it seems to be exhibiting the same behaviors again.  I will call Apple when people leave for the day but it isn’t under warranty and we need a more reliable solution.
Now would be a good time for us to explore options on combining these two functions if it is at all possible.
    Thank you.

For file serving and backup it is best to use a dedicated computer.. perhaps running a Server OS.
You can buy a Mac Mini for this function.. although you will also need to buy a large external drive for it of some sort. That of course will allow you to handle both Time Machine and File Serving natively.
However I would be rather less inclined to do it if all you can get now is Yosemite Server.. as I am not sure it is that reliable nor am I sure Snow Leopard would work that well with it.
An older mini server running one of the earlier versions might be a possible.
Mostly what people use now is a NAS. (Network-Attached Storage)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage
These are readily available.. Synology have a good name for Apple compatibility.. but you should note that it is not native apple.. and when OS changes are made these companies take a while to catch up. I have been testing a Synology for my mac backup and it works well..
I might also jump to another backup though.. Carbon Copy Cloner.. as it has some good abilities particularly when you are using something non-apple for storage location.
Remember if both your files and backups are on the NAS.. you have no backups.. a NAS failure is not unknown.. So all your files need to be backed up.. the advantage of the synology is you can allow the unit to back itself up to a USB drive plugged into it.. or more sophisticated RSYNC to another location.

  • How to delete the Calander Server account under the options tab in file sharing in your system preferences?

When I go under System Preferences-Sharing-File Sharing-Options there is an account listed called "Calender Server" that is checked. When I try to uncheck it, it asks for a password to turn it off and I don't know the password. How do I either turn this off or get rid of it?

Better still, try Apple - Support - Discussions - Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard.

  • Unable to restrict afp folder access using File Sharing in System Prefs

If I share files using AFP, and authenticate using a standard account from another machine on the LAN, I can browse and access ALL files and folders on the machine, not just those specified under "Shared Folders" in System Preferences->Sharing->File Sharing. Machine is running OS 10.6.5.

...You shouldn't be able to authenticate as a user/account that is not on the local machine.
Also for each item listed in Sharing Preferences, you have to specify POSIX permissions for specific users, check to make sure 'everyone' isn't set to read and write.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • File Sharing Missing from Sharing in System Preferences

I had file sharing working, and today I can no longer connect from a windows PC. When I go to System Preferences, Sharing, File Sharing is missing in the list. The only options are the following:
    DVD or CD SHaring
    Screen Sharing
    Remote Login
    Remote Management
    Remote Apple Events
    Bluetooth Sharing
Not 100% sure when it stopped working, but I think the last change was upgrading to VMware Fusion v2.0.5 fron 2.0.*, and I upgraded to 4GB of RAM. Also I noticed my hostname had changed with a 2 at the end (HOSTNAME 2). Not sure when that happened, but thought it could be relevant. Any ideas?

It is strange - it almost seems like your machine has two copies of your OS, one with the normal hostname, and one with the hostname with a 2. I can't imagine something like that happening, unless the VMWare somehow imported your Mac OS - or that a backup copy of the Mac OS was installed on a separate partition on your Mac, and somehow you're logging into that 2nd copy without realizing it. (Twilight Zone music here!)
Does your Mac otherwise boot up normally? Have you tried using the disk utility to do a disk check (and see if some ghost partition shows up)? Or, have you already done the dreaded re-install?

  • System Preferences defaulting to File Sharing

    Hi there !
Everytime I open up System Preferences it is opening to the file sharing preferences.
I would like it open to the window of icons for preferences (the main one).
How do I go about changing this?
I have already closed out system preferences and rebooted.  Neither have worked.
    Thanks !!

Well I can't say this is a correct answer or helpful answer because I think this new MacBook Pro is a lemon.
I own a macbook so I know my way around and how to do this.  This laptop is not right.
Even after deleting the com.apple.systempreferences.plist  file.  it still did that.   But it's also doing other odd things.
Everytime I shut down or reboot (and yes, I uncheck repopen windows),  it will open mail and system preferences (open to file sharing)  everytime.   I make sure everything is closed (no app indicator light is on),  and no matter what, it still opens to them.
Also it's not holding some tracking preferences.   I'm going to take it back today and exchange it.
Thanks for the answer above !
