File Sharing tab

This thing: http://grab.by/54r7 -- Where is it. It's not appearing.
Does anyone see this when their iOS4 device is connected, and GoodReader is installed? (Or if you don't have GoodReader, but you do see it, what app appears?)

OK, the information was kinda buried on the GoodReader website -- this feature hasn't been enabled for the iPhone version of the app yet.
"iPhone notice: GoodReader for iPhone needs to be updated to v.2.8 in order to be used with iTunes FIle Sharing. This update is in final stages of production and will be coming very soon. However, you don't need to wait for it to use the above advanced transfer. Unlike iTunes File Sharing, advanced USB transfer works with any version of GoodReader."
It was very confusing to see the iPad version have this feature, but the iPhone not -- but at least now we know.

  • File Sharing tab not working?

    Hi,
I am having a problem with iTunes and my iPad today: I have a couple of apps that allow sharing of content, such as iMockups, Pages, VLC, etc.
I wanted to add a video to VLC by using the file sharing tab and adding the video either by the "add..." button or just dragging it into the screen (like I did before), but nothing happened. In fact, nothing at all is showing on the right hand side for ANY app!
So I disconnected the iPad and looked at the apps, and all three apps I tested (Pages, VLC and iMockups) have their respective files still there, so they were not lost or anything.
So I went and reconnected the iPad, and for the time the iPad synchs with iTunes I can see all files! But once the synch completes I cannot?!
Has anyone come across this before? Is there a fix for that?
    Thanks for your time
    Alex

The issue has been resolved, turned out to be a bad backup of the iPad. Restoring it to a different backup fixed it.

  • Have iTunes 10.2.2 the "File Sharing" tab for apps is missing.

I have recently purchases an iPod Touch. I have a PDF reader app and a eBook reading app. I cannot add any files because there is no "file sharing" window at the bottom of the apps tab.  Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

A few dozen have looked so I may not be alone. Yet no one has offered a suggestion? I am still at 10.2.2.214 and iPhone on iOS 4.2.1. iTunes takes very long time to open 3+ minutes and does not respond when  device connected then fails to see any device connnected. Will Apple address or fail to fiind this issue? two years ago a few months passed and few upgrades then iPhone was recognized. All worked fine until last month with10.2 update. What are my options here? Please I have gone through ideas presented here for amonth, get one or two to work for a day and then fail after that. I would like to get stable operation of iTnes and then I'll leave things alone. I really do find the 3GS a good buy right now but, with no iTunes why buy it?

  • TS3536 I still dont see a file sharing tab and I want to use it for my mixer app, I made some ringtones and thats the only way I can use it

I cant see the filing sharing on itunes and I was wanting to get some ringtones and thats the only way I can use them, where is the filing sharing thing at? even when I sync my phone I cant seee it

File sharing appears at the bottom of the device's apps tab i.e. the tab that you use to select which apps to sync to the device. Connect the iPhone to your computer, select it on the left-hand side of iTunes, and scroll to the bottom of the Apps tab on the right-hand side.

  • File Sharing Service keeps crashing Error Reading Settings, File Sharing Service keeps crashing Error Reading Settings

File sharing service keeps popping up with the error message An error occurred on the server while processing a command.  This error occurred while processing a command of type 'getConnectedUsers' in plug-in 'servermgr_afp'.
I have tried multiple solutions on this site, unloading afp and restarting it, restarting postgres.  The file sharing tab will show up for a few seconds on the server.app config page then once someone tries to access any of the shared volumes on there, the event log shows it crashing instantly.  Error in console:
    The server '127.0.0.1' reported an error while processing a command of type 'getConnectedUsers' in plug-in: 'servermgr_afp'.  Error: Error Domain=XSActionErrorDomain Code=0 "SETTING_NOT_FOUND_ERR" UserInfo=0x7ffe6a835060 {NSLocalizedDescription=SETTING_NOT_FOUND_ERR}
Also I get the error com.apple.launchd: (com.apple.collabd.notifications[7520]) Exited with code 1 then always followed by Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds and this happens every 10 seconds without fail.

I have started getting this error this morning:
This error occurred while processing a command of type 'getConnectedUsers' in plug-in 'servermgr_afp'.
Using Server 2.2.2; MacMini running OS X 10.8.5, 2 GHz Core i7 with 8 GB RAM attached to a 12TB Pegasus RAID.
When the error appears, my users cease to be able to access file shares.
Often, just before the error occurs, my users experience substantial slow down in the Finder's responsiveness when manipulating files on those shares.
Restarting the Server App will produce one of several results
    1. fix the problem (rarely)
    2. fail to connect to server
    3. connect to server but not get all services running.
The system itself resists a full shutdown, hanging at the grayish-white screen (not spinning wheel or cog or apple logo).
I wish there was some known fix for this.

  • AirDisk File Sharing - Saving Files - Unable to connect via wires then...

OK, I followed these instructions from another poster as I was unable to save Microsoft Word documents directly to the drive via the "Save As" option...
    -------- PREVIOUS POSTERS INFO ----------
The solution that works for me is to mount the AirDisk(s) using SMB instead of AFP.
This means you should log on the AEBS and configure the Disk for Windows File Sharing - this is on the 'File Sharing' tab of the Disks configuration group.
You only need to put in a Workgroup Name (I used "Basestation"). Don't worry about the WINS Server.
You should update your AEBS, and turn of the AirDisk Utility.
You then mount your disk(s) using SMB. You can do this using the Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server.
    Enter the following:
    smb://"YourBaseStationName".local./"YourDiskName"
You should then be asked to enter the Workgroup name, the disk name and the disk password.
This should mount your AirDisk using SMB.
In my experience, this not only solved my problem re saving within Word/Excel, but also increased the speed with which I can access the AirDisk...
(If you want these Disks to mount automatically when you login, then Add these disks to you Start Up items in your login account...)
    -------- END POSTER ------
OK, so here is my problem... After doing this, I was able to save a file directly to the drive... I also followed these instructions as it said it would be faster overall... Now, I use Apple Backup 3.1 to backup both my laptops to my external hard drive on the Extreme. Well, when I brought up the drives on my desktop, the names didn't change, but the names of the drives were all capital letters... I think this threw off the Backup program because it said that it doesn't recognize this location, therefore, it showed that he had never backed up to that location before. So, figuring I changed it and caused a few minor changes, that I would just erase the hard drive, plug the hard drive directly into the laptop as I had done before to speed up the inital backup, and then go back to wireless backups thereafter as they wouldn't be "full" backups and would then be faster and tolerable. Well, when I went to connect the drive to my laptop via the USB cable, you could hear the drive mounting, you could see the drives mounted in Disk Utility, but they refused to show up on the desktop, no matter what. What does this mean? Did making the drives work as File Sharing drives make them no longer able to mount via a cable anymore? What gives? Any ideas?

    1. My USB 500GB External Hard Drive is currently
partitioned into three different drives. The Volume
Format is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled), what is
    that?
Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is one of the HFS formats. Apple does not use the term HFS anymore but it is the same thing. You can find a good explanation about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HFS_Plus
    This will explain journalling, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journalingfilesystem
    2. What is a FAT volume? What does FAT stand for?
    Where would I select that?
Here is an explanation about FAT http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FileAllocationTable
It is a choice in Disk Utility when you erase a disk.
    3. What is an HFS volume? What does HFS stand for?
    Where would I select that?
    See above: Mac OS Extended.
It is a choice in Disk Utility when you erase a disk.
    4. What does SMB mean/stand for?
It stands for Server Message Block explained here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ServerMessageBlock
It is a protocol for connecting to volumes over a network.
    5. What does AFP mean/stand for?
It stands for Apple File Protocol explained here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleFilingProtocol
It is also a protocol for connecting to volumes over a network.
    - Yes, I tried to save an MS Word document to my
AirPort Disk, but it hung up and I got the spinning
beach ball and ended in an error and I had to force
Microsoft Word to quit. Then I saw that posting and
I tried that, I was then able to open an MS Word
document and save it directly to the drive the first
time. However, like I said, it messed up my Backup
3.1 (When mounting as SMB) and made it believe that
this was a whole new drive and that it hadn't backed
up to it before, when it had, but only when I
    connected as AFP.
Did Backup work when you connected using AFP?
    - So, this would've been a simple fix if I plan on
staying with SMB share, however, when I go to connect
my USB External Hard Drive directly to my laptop, the
partitions do not mount on my drive like they had
before I made the drives a File Sharing device
    through AirPort Utility.
Try using Disk Utility to repair the disk or disk permissions and see if you can read it again.
    6. How do I get that drive to be recognized by my
computer again when I connect it directly to my
    laptop?
I don't know why this is happening you may want to call Apple Support about that.
    7. I don't care about anything Windows/PC, so
whatever way is FASTER and provides the BEST results,
    let me know!
If you don't have PCs then stick with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as your volume file format.
    8. Also, when I select "Connect to server" and then
click "Browse" and then "Network" nothing shows up in
there, but when I type the path in they connect just
    fine, why?
That's strange! All available network volumes should show up when you click on the Network icon in the Finder. I don't know why it is not working for you.
    THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!
    Some thoughts!
I would stick with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as your volume file format. If backing up to the network share is important to you, I would wait until Apple fixes the problem regarding opening and saving Word files directly to the network share (Air Disk). Save them locally and then copy them to the network share.

  • Cannot enable file sharing

    Hello,
I recently bought my ipad and since i want to use it for taking notes in class i bought the pages app from itunes. File sharing should be available for pages right? But i cannot enable file sharing in my ipad, there's no file sharing tab in the general settings. I have the latest 4.2.1 operating system and 10.1.2 version of itunes. How do i enable file sharing in my case? Or are there models of iPad that intentionally do not have the file sharing ability? Please help.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
File sharing is performed when you connect the iPad to iTunes. The following support article explains how you do this.

  • Server Admin. file sharing lion client to Snow leopard server

I'm running Lion on my client Mac and my Server is Snow leopard 10.6.8.  I have to use Server Admin 10.7 on Lion but there is no "File Sharing" tab to set up or edit the file sharing options on my 10.6 server?.  I understand this is correct for Lion Server, but how do I get round it for Snow leopard Server??  On the Apple website compatibility page (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1822) it states:
    "Mac OS X Server v10.6
To administer a Mac OS X Server v10.6-based server, you can use the Server Admin Tools 10.6 on a Mac OS X v10.6 (client) computer. You should match the version numbers of the server, tools, and admin workstation as closely as possible; for example, use Server Admin Tools version 10.6.8 on Mac OS X v10.6.8 to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6.8. You may also use the Server Admin Tools 10.7 on an OS X Lion computer to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6."
So, How do I administer file sharing???

To configure File Sharing on a 10.6 server using 10.7 Server Admin, click the service (AFP, SMB, NFS, etc.) then click the Share Points tab.

  • File sharing randomly stops working

    Hi guys,
For some reason every once in a while the file sharing on my iMac stops working and to get it working again I need to untick and then re-tick "File Sharing"  in the "Sharing" pane in Preferences.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Delete all sharepoints in the File Sharing tab of the Sharing preference pane. Recreate them one at a time and test each one.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume, and run Repair Disk (not  Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual.
If any sharepoints are on a different volume, repair it too.
    Step 3
Boot the server in safe mode and test. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. After testing, reboot as usual and verify that you still have the problem.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. Repeat with this line:
    /var/db/BRLM.db
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
Reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

  • Have turned Home sharing on in "File", but if I try choose the sharing tab in "Edit", "Preferences", It says Bonjour needs to be activated.  Where do I do this?

Try updating iTunes on your PC. Hopefully it'll re-install or fix the Bonjour issue.

  • I am having trouble importing files from file sharing in the same household.  I have followed the tutorials but do not have the tab at the bottom of Itunes "Import to library"

When I go to file sharing on Itunes, I am unable to import files to my itunes.  I can play them, but am unable to move them to my library.  I have been through the tutorial and when I get to "show menu at the bottom of library" there is no menu.  I do not have the tab "items not in my library" or "import"   I have been through the upper tab and see no option in the view menu and have also consolidated the files.  Any suggestions?

Error code -36 is an i/o error. That usually means that the computer is having a problem reading or writing the file you're working with, which in turn usually means that the drive has a problem. A sudden slowdown of the magnitude you meantion usually means a severely damaged directory or physical damage to the disk. I'd run a disk fixer such as Disk Utility or Disk Warrior on the slow drive. If it reports problems which can't be fixed, which I suspect it will, I'd back everything up. I just had a LaCie 250GB drive die on me with similar problems (i/o errors, very slow access) and returned it under the warranty.

  • Network User appearing twice in connection tab under file sharing

I have one of my network users that appears twice under the connected Users tab in the File Sharing service (Lion Server).
It only appears to be happening with one of the users.  When they log in they get shown twice with the same IP address although they can have different idle time.
I can not seem to work out what is going on.
    Any thoughts/suggestions would be welcome.

After a little bit of mucking around I have discovered the duplicate user appears when I mount a network volume (which is also a share) during login using a "mount drive" script.  I can disconnect the duplicate user which unmounts the network volume.
Same thing happens when I connect to the server machine through the SHARED listing in Finder as it is set up to use my network account to connect.  ONce again I can disconnect which simply umounts the shared access.

  • Kobo APP download Docs, PDF's Kobo said to convert the PDF using Adobe Digital Editions, then I'd be able to upload to the Kobe APP via iTunes. Where is File Sharing under the Apps tab located?

I've uploaded my PDF to Adobe Digital Editions, but can't find where on iTunes to select file sharing under the Apps Tab... as specified in the instructions in the Kobo APP for the iPhone... and a rep from Kobo told me it was possible.

For future questions, this forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with an issue if you ask in the general iTunes forums.

  • How to delete the Calander Server account under the options tab in file sharing in your system preferences?

When I go under System Preferences-Sharing-File Sharing-Options there is an account listed called "Calender Server" that is checked. When I try to uncheck it, it asks for a password to turn it off and I don't know the password. How do I either turn this off or get rid of it?

Better still, try Apple - Support - Discussions - Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard.

  • Connecting to shared machines (either via Share Screen or file sharing)

I have a MobileMe account and four computers in separate locations which I regularly need to connect between. Some are on static IP's and others are on dynamic IP's. So all of them have file sharing enabled as well as screen sharing enabled. They're also all registered in my MobileMe account. Anytime I'm in a Finder window, in the sidebar, I see Shared > (computer name) and see all the computers there. If I click on it, I'm offered two buttons, one to "Connect As" if I want to file share, and "Share Screen" if I want to VNC.
I would say 60-70% of the time I click on either of those buttons, it doesn't work. It takes about a minute to try and connect, then says, "Connection failed to (computer name). Please make sure screensharing is enabled...blah blah blah..." (it is)
However, 40-60% of the time if I click the same button again, it DOES work!
    Sometimes it takes several tries.
It's really frustrating that I can't reliably connect to the other computers in the MobileMe list.
Does anyone else see this and are there any suggestions? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Trying to connect to a computer that has a static IP vs. dynamic fails with about the same regularity. So I don't think that's it.
I also get about the same failure rate when trying to use Connect As to fileshare. So I don't think it's a VNC/screenshare-specific problem.
I've tried using DynDNS as an alternate way to reliably locate another of my computers. It fails with approx. the same failure rate, and sometimes works upon re-attempt.
    HELP!

Goto your System Preferences->Sharing, Then select the Internet tab.
From the drop down menu select 'Share your connection from: Kyrocera card.'
And in the 'To computers using' box tick built in ethernet and connect a network cable to your powerbook and the other end to your network.
Or if you have an airport card installed share the connection using your airport. Then other wireless devices can connect to your powerbook.
