File sharing using APLs How-to?

Hi there,
We are a small business company switched to mac pro-s and got a problem with file sharing on local network.
When someone creates a file anywhere on the network, example: save a *.dwg /*.doc /*.pdf or simply create a new folder it has only permissions like:
read access for staff and for everyone
read and write for the specific user who created so "owns" the file
The problem is we always receive files via email onto the mac mini and want to send files from all over the network ect. We work in teamwork mode in some apps so we do really need read and write permissions all over the network BUT NOT ON THE Macintosh HD-s. In every mac Pro there is a RAID drive called DATA. I need your help how to get all the old and newly created files read and write permissions on all the data disks. We have 8 users globally.
I've read about ignoring permissions on a whole drive-I really don't want to do so.
I've also found Setting up the thing with ACLs But I'm not yet an expert in terminal. Could you give me a step by step "guide" how to set up my user group and the permissions for my data drives.

In my experience, permissions are something you either
• delve into, by reading the man pages of chown, chmod, sticky, chflags and acl as well as articles and books OR
• have someone who already knows his stuff set it up for you according to your needs.
In other words: In my experience, step-by-step guides won't reflect your needs.
What you want is to make use of the principle of "inheritance". Also, try to work out a folder structure that fits the working process of your team. Partitioning the minis HD into a boot and a data volume might be a first step.
To facilitate administration without the Terminal, have a look at the Server Admin Tools: Workgroup Manager is used on Mac OS X Server to administrate users, groups and sharing, but it can also be pointed at "normal" clients to give you a GUI access to folder permissions.

File sharing using accounts: private shares on main TC drive only

Is there a way to use "accounts" file sharing mode and allow users to have private sections of USB drive(s)? When I attach USB drives in "accounts" mode, it creates a "shared" folder on the file system, and all files placed there by any users are read/writable by all other users. The only place a user can keep private files is on the onboard drive. This is not good! Any workaround? Did I miss a trick?

I've TC 1 TB, latest model (Early 2009 in Apple terms I suppose).
Can I have private folders in EXTERNAL USB drive for accounts?
I've created two user accounts via Airport Utility->Disks->Secure Shared Disks: With accounts.
User account 1 sees three kind of Sharepoints via Time Capsule's entry under Shared-category in Finder:
- external USB drive in whole (bad bad)
- entry for main level so internal disk inside TC
- dedicated account directory for this user account (let's say: account1) in TC's internal drive
User account 2 sees:
- external USB drive in whole (bad bad)
- entry for main level so internal disk inside TC
- dedicated account directory for this user account (let's say: account2) in TC's internal drive
If wanted scenario isn't possible in TC, how about Airport Extreme, can disks be controlled there separately?
Summa summarum: I'm trying to have poor man's fileserver in my home network. Target is to have common place for users' files (while maintaining privacy), so external USB drive for this purpose. TC's internal drive dedicated for Time Machine backups only.

Remote File Sharing via SSH-How to Set This Up the Easy Way

So, I have been trying to gain access to my office iMac from my MacbookPro at home via the "interwebs" but keep getting the same issue...can not connect. I have read umpteen forums and threads. All give similar advice or are too technical to follow. I thought we made it work yesterday by installing Macfusion. That works just fine if the Mac is on. It will not wake a sleeping Mac. Here is my settup.
Home (MBP running 10.6)
Network (Timecapsule)
Office (27in iMac running 10.6).
I do have a static IP for the router.
Here is what I want to do. Access my "sleeping" iMac from a different network via Connect Server for File Sharing. I have all the appropriate file sharing buttons checked. I can access TC using the static IP but that's as far as it goes.
Is there a simple "Mac way" of doing this?

Ps. I am happy to invest in a trusted third-party software that will "ping" the network to wake my Mac unlike Macfusion which connects only to a running Mac.

Also check in System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Wake for network access is ticked

TS1307 can't send mail after file sharing using bluetooth

I treid to set up file sharing between my macbook pro and my husband's macbook and this has effected Mail. He can receive email but not send from his laptop but can do so remotely. Some thing has changed on his laptop but I can't find out what. Any help?

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

Print and file sharing used to work...

First off, Windows XP, Linksys wireless wrt54g version 2, One desktop connected to the router wired, one laptop, wireless Linksys wireless card. Firmware is updated to most current version, wep encripted.
I used to be able to share files between the 2 computers and print from my laptop wirelessly if the desktop computer was on. I've always shared had the internet connection working, and it still does work just fine, but the file sharing and print sharing no longer do. It allows me to see the other computer connected to the router, but will not let me connect to the other computer. I get an error message, I'll post a pic of that. Nothing has changed, it just stopped working. I also have turned off both of the MS firewalls in attempt to get this to work, and that didn't help.
Both computers are virus and spyware free, AVG antivirus, adaware-se and spybot search and destroy, along with spywareblaster are always run and updated,

Just a quick follow up.
I ran into the same problem and for two nights straight it drove me nuts. After reading this post about the firewall I decided to do some investigating.
All firewall software applications have a option to add a range of secure I.P. address. You must enter the range that the router gives you. 192.168.1.100-200 etc. My old router used a 192.168.2.1 and this messed me up.
After entering the new info, file print sharing was good to go.

Concerns with File Sharing using SMB

I'm trying to get the windows on my home network to be able to view certain shared folders on my iMac
When I enable SMB file sharing the windows PC gets to see most of my iMac and not just the shared folders with the appropriate read/write controls
What am I doing wrong?

HT201301 File Sharing Using iTunes

When I open Itunes and click on File, then devices, my only options are "sync ipad", "transfer purchases from ipad", "backup", and "restore from backup". I don't see any other place to click on devices or any place to select ipad. What am I missing?

It will depend upon the app that you are wanting to copy them to. I have the GoodReader app which supports a number of document types (e.g. word, PDF, text, rich text - read-only, it can't edit documents) and I can zip a directory on my Mac, add that .zip file via file sharing, and then unzip it into its folder structure within the app - I haven't done large directories, but it seems to work to at least one sub-folder level

Whats happened to file sharing apps? how do i add save files in office HD, keynote, VLC etc.....seems to have disapered in itune 11...apple why do you do this?

Believe it or not File Sharing is there but in a slightly different location. But I was definitely confused and had trouble finding it when I looked because of the way iTunes has windows within windows.
Start iTunes 11 and connect your iPad.
Select your iPad. I choose to "View Sidebar" so my iTunes looks more familiar. So I select my iPad in the Sidebar.
I the main window I select Apps. And scroll down.
There are multiple sub windows within the main window. The first sub wind is Apps. If you scroll in the Apps window that's all you will see, your apps.
Move your cursor outside of the App window and the main window will scroll. Below the Apps sub window is another subwidow called File Sharing. That's where you'll find the familiar file sharing area.

Few questions about file sharing using airport

I'm thinking about getting an AirPort Extreme, but I have a few questions:
1- I (must) use Ubuntu Linux at work and I would like to be able to acess my home files hosted at AirPort remotly. Is this possible?
2- Can I access my files on my iPhone using 3G connection (eg: download or stream mp3 files, photos, ...)?

When i click on a file in my macbook air under the share option Skype is not getting listed. I have even tried going to more but still Skype is not listed there also.

File sharing using Terminal

I would like to share a drive on one iMac from another iMac. (need a second backup to Time Machine, that only backs up to one drive). I have a home built script on Linux that does a great backup, but now I need to access, via a shell script, another iMac's drive. Finder does it with no problem, but I don't know how.... I want to use iChat video and file sharing with Windows users

Nowadays, iChat is compatible with AOL/AIM, Google Talk, Jabber, Mac.com and MobileMe instant messaging services. I know that Yahoo Messenger support will be available soon in Mac OS X Lion.
I tried using AOL/AIM and Google Talk natively in iChat in order to talk with Windows users which were using Google Talk application or web chatting (Me from: Google Talk - My friends from: Google Talk, and Me from: AOL/AIM - My friends from: Google Talk), but videoconference and file sharing were not available.
I also tried Windows Live Messenger in iChat via Jabber intermediate, but it is not efficient and doesn't work for videoconference and file sharing.
So, which IM service combination I should use to chat with Windows users in order to be able to use videoconference and file sharing using such a great app like iChat?

A lapsed Trial or lapsed Paid for MobileMe account will not work in any fashion, as a Screen Name in iChat/AIM apps or as a Email. (Of course it is no longer an Valid Apple ID either).
Given that Google is a Jabber server iChat will Video (or Audio Only) Chat Jabber to Jabber.
With a Valid AIM name (AIM, MobileMe or @mac.com) then it is supposed to work to AIM on a PC
This tends to vary from person to person as to success.
From AIM version 6.5 AIM introduced a Send as Typing feature called "Real Time"
It does not work to iChat and in fact also has to be turned Off in the Buddy List at the AIM end for Video or Audio chats to work.
The AIM app also has to be allowed through the Windows Firewall as an Exception, preferably with UPnP enabled as well and UPnP enabled in their Router.
Trillian is a paid for App for PCs that provide an alternative.
Recently theri site offered 3 windows versions
The Pro version of verion 3.2 (known to work), a version 4 and a version 5 in beta. The version 3.2 used to have a free Text chat version and only the Pro version was needed to Video.
Until the site was reorganised the 3.2 version was "On Sale" at a reduced price.
It seems version 5 is now out of beta
They are still separating out a Pro version.
It is a multi-service client
There is also a Mac version although I have not tried it.

How about using a MobileMe expired account screen name for using iChat with Windows-Google Talk users? Should I expect the same incompatibilities?
I have already addressed part of this. The fact the name will not work full stop.
However one way of reading this is that you are thing of linking AIM and Jabber (Google) Buddies in one Buddy List
Directly in iChat this cannot be done - unless you are the one with the Jabber Account and an AIM Transport set up.
You would be subject to the same Text Chat only restrictions.
It is a bit like the fact your phone line can be used for Fax, Telephone and DSL broadband. (in fact mine does TV as well)
You granny would not be able to talk to your Fax machine if that happened to answer the call.
Her Fax machine might be able to communicate with your computer if you had an active Fax app on there, and a dail-up modem active to answer.

File Sharing on a mixed Tiger-Leopard network

I have a LAN with two machines, a PPC with 10.4.11 and a new Laptop with 10.5.1. If I turn on file sharing on the Tiger machine, I can see and access it from Leopard. But if I turn on file sharing on the Laptop, I can find the laptop as a server when I browse from the Tiger machine, but cannot connect to it. So essentially I have one way file sharing.
The network is a new Apple Airport Extreme and the problem exists whether I have the laptop connected wirelessly or through a hard ethernet port, so I don't think it is the LAN.
A tech support call to Apple resulted in a transfer from the first technician to a product support unit ("... this may be an emerging Leopard issue") and a 2 hour hold before the call was dropped. Worst customer support I have had from Apple-- and I have been a customer since a Mac Plus and system 3.2...
Anyone successfully mount a shared volume on a Leopard machine using another running Tiger?

Finally figured this out. It has to do with the changes in how Leopard implements a Firewall. The firewall settings in Leopard have been moved from the "Sharing" panel to "Security".
The solution for me was to go to the Leopard machine System Prefs and turn on file sharing. (Note that "Screen Sharing" only works between two Leopard systems) Add whatever folders you want shared; the default is to share only the "Public" folder. I also changed the users to "read & write"; the default is "read only" after highlighting the folders I wanted write privileges on. You have to do this folder by folder. If you want file sharing using anything but the Apple File Protocol (AFP), you have to set it under "options".
Now go to the "Security" Panel and click "Firewall". The Leopard Firewall set to "Allow only essential services" blocks file sharing. Set it to "Set access for specific services and applications". You should see "File Sharing (AFP)" in the window.
The Leopard system can now be found by browsing servers from other machines on the network.
