File Sharing with PCs over wifi

Hello,
I have just set up a mac mini as a home server, primarily for file sharing. It works fine when the mac is plugged into the router by ethernet, my two PCs can connect to the mac's local IP address and can access the drives, but they cannot access the mac's wifi IP, so I can only use it as a server when it is plugged into the router, which is something of a limitation regarding placement.
It's a brand new mac mini 2.5 GHz, with OSX 10.8.4, with OSX server, and the PCs are both Windows 7.
I can't tell if it is a problem with the mac or the PCs, I've swapped the IPs of the wifi and ethernet interfaces and still the PCs could only access the ethernet.
I hope this is enough to go on.

As a guess...  Are the WiFi and the wired networks configured in different IP subnets (as would be typical when there's more than one network connection on a host) or is the WiFi device configured as an access point (which would disable IP routing on the device, and rendering it effectively transparent to IP traffic)?

  • File sharing with PCs on Airport Extreme

I have two Mac (one Tiger, one Leopard) and one PC connected wirelessly and two PCs and printer connected via ethernet to a new AirPort Extreme which is connected to a DSL modem. All computers connect to the Internet and the printer with no problem. File sharing works between the two Macs but not between the PCs or between the PCs and the Macs. The PCs are on a Windows XP network called "Workgroup", file sharing is turned on and a number of folders are set for sharing. However, the PCs don't recognize each other or the Macs. In fact, the individual PCs don't even recognize themselves as being on a network! When I open Network Places, no folders show up and when I try to open Workgroup, instead of seeing any of the computers, I get an error message: "Workgroup not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator...." With respect to the wireless connections, WEP/WAP are disabled, so encryption should not be a problem.
The PCs and Macs networked OK on an older Linksys router, so I suspect the problem is with the AirPort Extreme setup. I've searched the Forum and tried everything I can think of to no avail. Any help on this will be much appreciated - thanks in advance!

Thanks mredma; you noted your solution is for Norton Personal Firewall which is apparently different from the firewall in Norton 360. Following is the response that I got Symantec Support for Norton 360. I am happy to say that it worked for me!
Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Technical Support.
I understand from your e-mail that you are unable to access network computer after installing Norton 360.
Brian, please note that this issue can occur if Norton 360 firewall is blocking the connection to the other computer. Please disable Norton 360 firewall and see if you are able to access the other computer. To disable firewall, please do the following:
    1. Start Norton 360.
    2. Click on Tasks & Settings.
    3. Click on Change Advanced Settings.
    4. Click on Firewall Protection Settings.
    5. Select Off under Firewall and then click Apply.
    6. Select until I turn it back on from the drop-down menu and click OK.
    7. Click Apply, then click Close.
    8. Exit Norton 360 and try to access the other computer.
If you are able to access the network computer, please reenable firewall and create a General Rule to add the IP address of the other computer in Norton 360. To do so, please follow the steps given below:
    1. Start Norton 360.
    2. Click Task and Settings.
    3. Click Change Advanced Settings.
    4. Click on Firewall Protection Settings.
    5. Click on the tab, Firewall General Rules.
    6. Click on the button, Add. This will open up Add a Rule window.
    7. Check the option Allow, then click on Next button.
    8. Select 'Connections to and from Other Computers', then click on Next.
    9. Select 'Only Computers and Sites listed below', then click on 'Add' button.
    10. Select 'Individually' and type in the IP address of the other computer and click OK.
    11. Click Next.
    12. Select 'All' from the drop down menu, then select 'All types of Communications....'
    13. Click Next.
    14. Click Next, and enter a name, as per your choice, for this rule. Click Next.
    15. Click Finish.
    16. You will be able to see the new Rule. Click on the button 'Move Up' until the new rule reaches on top of the whole list. This is very important. Otherwise, the new rule will not come in effect.
    17. Click Apply, then click Close.
    18. Exit Norton 360.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. It will be a pleasure to help you.
Please note that in step #10 you can use a range of IP addresses rather than listing each one separately. I used the same range I set up in the AirPort Utility for DCHP IP address assignment. I also added 10.0.1.1 as individual permitted address, because I believe that is the AirPort Extreme Base Station adderess. I don't know if that last step is necessary. - Brian

  • Mac OS X File Sharing not working over WiFi

I have 3 computers, all Macs. Two are hooked into my WRT54GP2 via ethernet cables, and one is using WiFi (Airport Extreme). All get an IP number from the router via DCHP (no hard numbers). The router is also hooked up to a Motorola Surfboard cable modem.
The two Macs using ethernet have no problems at all, and can access the internet and share files and printers. The WiFi Mac, however, can access the Internet fine, but cannot mount the other machines as file servers. It doesn't even ping them.
What is going on in the setup of the router that is preventing the ethernet machines from being seen properly by the WiFi Mac? I would greatly appreciate your help.

I am not 100% clear on the whole situation, but this is my thought. Your Airport wifi is dishing out DHCP on a secondary network from your other device. You PB is getting on that network and not the linksys unit. Thus the reason they can not see each other. I think you would have to set you Airport up as a bridge and not a gateway for it to pass date through and not create a second network.

  • Vista file sharing with OS 10.3.4

Are there known issues with Windows Vista OS connecting and file sharing with Mac OS 10.3.4? We can connect Windows XP with Mac OS 10.3.4, but two Vista machines cannot. Any ideas?

Maybe a lack of support for something the Vista OS uses.
Mac OS 10.3.9 was always mountable and writable from XP. I would set up a folder on a large disk on my MDD (10.3.9) for my wife to connect to with her work laptop running XP, to use as a backup area. Printing was also extremely easy from XP to a USB printer attached to 10.3.9.

  • Macs and file sharing with Panasonic Lumix TS5

I'm trying to set up this camera to send my photos wirelessly to my IMAC but have hit a brick wall.  The instructions with the camera state wifi sharing is supported with OS X 10.4 to 10.8, and I am running 10.75.  The instructions are simple: find the file and enable sharing.  I've completed all the steps, and my camera finds my Imac fine, but then cannot find the shared folder.
I researched this and found that for a different Panasonic camera, despite what panasonic says, file sharing did not work for mac only environments. (http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3360154). I have contacted panasonic, and am beginning to believe the this is true for my camera as well.  I explained my problem and she first recommended to sign up for a lumix account.  Then it went from here:
Kerry-Ann W.: In the setup it states where a lumix club account is required to send images to lumix club cloud
Dave: Ok, do I understand correctly that I needed a lumix club account to transfer images wirelessly to my IMAC?
Kerry-Ann W.: No I am not saying that. There is some sharing settings that needs to be set on your computer. We recommend that you contact apple so they can assist you in adjusting those settings.
Dave: Ok, I've signed up for a lumix club account. Will that help me transfer my images to the mac?
Kerry-Ann W.: We recommend that you contact apple so they can assist you in adjusting the sharing settings on your IMAC.
Dave: Kerry-Ann, please help me. I've done exactly what the Lumix manual tells me to do with my mac and it's not working. You are supposed to help when the manual doesn't suffice. Isn't there any tips you can give me to try and make this work?
Kerry-Ann W.: That is correct and based on checks done if it is not seeing your folders that means there needs to be some settings done on your computer for it to see the folders and if that is not done then you will not be able to see the folders.
Dave: Ok, so will you help me get those settings done on my computer?
Kerry-Ann W.: We recommend that you contact apple so they can assist you in adjusting those settings.
I have no idea what settings she is referring to, and she offered no guidance at all.  Has anyone had any success file sharing with panasonic cameras?  Or has anyone else concluded this is hopeless?
    Thank you,
    Dave

I have run through 2 of these cameras (1st one died-Epic Panasonic Fail) and I'm stoked I found the easy fix. No thanks to PaniCsonic.
Connect your camera via USB to your MacBook. Don't worry that it won't show.
Go to System Preferences under the 'Apple' icon (top left corner for any newbies)
Select the 'Sharing' tab/folder (should be yellow diamond with a person walking to YOUR left direction)
    Select 'Internet Sharing'
A sub menu 'To computers using' will open up to the right with 3 boxes/options:
    1) Firewire
    2) Ethernet
    3) Bluetooth PAN
Select Bluetooth PAN box so it check marks as selected.
    Click the 'Internet Sharing' box.
Select 'Start' when the prompt asks if you are sure you want to turn on Internet sharing.
The 'Internet Sharing' box will then select.
Your camera will then prompt you to select a USB mode. Select 'PC'.
Wait through the access mode and VOILA, your photos will be uploaded straight to iPhoto as they should do in the first place.
I like the camera for it's simplistic functionality. I had a slick Olympus underwater that had the same features, but was more time in navigating through them all. I don't like PaniCsonic for their poor foresight in making this camera an austosetup feature for Mac users. My iPhone didn't like it much either.
Nonethless, there's the fix. For/from me.

can we get apple to make a fix to download that would enable the bluetooth file sharing with any deivce? i would like to to stay with Apple iphone but if they dont improve the lack of features.. i will move on and I know im not the only person to think like this.

There is not "fix" to be provided, Apple made a decision to not include the file sharing profile.

  • File sharing with multiple users on one Mac

I have two Macs, both of which ca seen each other across the network. My question regards file sharing with multiple users on the same computer. When file sharing, are the files from all users available across the network, or just those of the user presently logged in? The issue is that I am trying to access files from a user who isn't currently logged in, but another user on that computer is. I need to get into that person's documents, but I don't see a way to navigate to their documents folder.

Right, I got that. But the computer is in constant use by User A, while I need access to User B's files. I could need access at anytime, and it would be a pain to make User A log off and log in as User B everytime. I was just wondering if there is anyway to access User B's files in this situation, without logging User B in.

  • File sharing with PC

    Hi,
I'm new to the Mac experience and I'm trying to set-up file sharing with my MacBook and PC and I can't figure it out. I've tried entering the PC's IP address through the Finder - Connect to Server, but I can't get it working.
I would appreciate any suggestions you have to offer! Thanks.

  • File sharing with accounts

I currently have my TC configured for file sharing with a disk password. Lately, however, I find that I have a need to be able to restrict read/write access to certain folders and files based on the user. But, when I select File Sharing "With Accounts" from the drop down I get a warning message stating "Setting up user accounts will make any files already on AirPort disks inaccessible." Seems like a pretty vague warning considering the possible outcome!
Does this mean I will lose access to all existing files already on the TC disk permanently, or just until I configure the accounts with access?
    Thanks for any insight.
    - Don

Is the file sharing the same between the TC and the AirPort Extreme 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet) with a USB2 connected disk?
My experience is that the network share of the shared disk is different, but no files get lost. One can move between the security mechanisms without losing data. YMMV.
Here are my findings in detail: I was using the shared disk "With a Disk Password". When connecting from a Mac, a single share called like the partition of the disk would automatically mount. On that disk I put some folders "Music" and "Videos" directly in the root of the mounted share. The same volume also had a backup copy of my Mac mini, that I did when it was still locally connected (USB2 directly to the mini) rather than via Disk sharing. From that time there is still a "Users" folders there. One important folder is called "Shared". All folders and their files are accessible.
    "Volumename" (share)
    - Music
    - Photos
    - Videos
    - Shared
    - Users
When I changed from "With a disk password" to "With accounts", I also get the warning about "...will make any files already on AirPort disks inaccessible".
After the change, I have no access to "Music", "Photos" or "Videos" anymore.
However, there is still the share called "Volumename", but now it points to the sub folder "Shared" !!!!
When connecting from either Windows or Mac I see two shares. One called "Volumename" and the other matching the user name. I think the user share actually points to /users/username.
When switching back to "With a disk password", all is like it was before - no files are lost, the "Music", "Photos" and "Videos" folders stay there, and so does all their content.
I will now try to move them into the "Shared" folder, so that the share content after switching to Secure Shared Disk "With Accounts" will look the same as the content looked until now.

  • Help using file sharing with different users accounts on same Macbook

Hi, I just wanted a little help using the file sharing option. My wife and I had different users accounts on the same MacBook, but when I am trying to share my baby's picture from my documents folder for my wife to have the same picture, I can't find the way to do that; I am not been able to find my pictures on my wife's account. Is there any way that I could share a folder from my account and my wife to have the same files at the same time on her account?
I mean, something like the smart play list on the itunes?
    Thank you

You can't do that directly unless you change permissions on your whole Documents folder which is not a good idea. Your wife can see your Documents folder from her account by going to Users/yourusername/Documents. However, this folder has no read privileges for others except yourself by default so she won't be able to open it.
rather than changing permissions on your Documents folder, you can place the pictures you want to share in Public folder in your home directory or in Users/Shared folder.

  • FCE file sharing with FCP...?

I am considering purchasing FCE (and a macbook pro), but need to know a few things from users who have experience with it. First, is FCE totally compatible in terms of file sharing with FCP? I'm a beginer and need to learn editing. I just completed production on a film. My editor, who is also my filmmaking partner has FCP with all the bells and whistles. I live in California, he lives in Georgia. I'm hoping to supplement the editing process as we begin putting the film together from opposite sides of the country. Will I be able to do so with FCE, or will there be a problem opening certain filters and plugins from FCP?
Also I was wondering, if I do purchase FCE will I get an upgrade price break when and if I move up to FCP?
Any help and advice would be mucho appreciated. Thanks

    Hi
    Exactly as Tom writes.
But there are some tools in FCP that are that great that they could justify for
    taking the full step.
Colorcorrecting - three ways (not to mention the extra program Color™)
MultiCamera editing - This to be able to edit as real life all Cameras at once
and You even don't need to be anything like precise - only adjust a second or two
    afterwards.
A two Camera one hour documentation used to take about 10 to edit in FCE FOR ME
and I've done same in FCP in about 1 hour 20 minutes.
    It was mind blowing.
But there is a price-tag I know it hurts and an upgrade program would benefit
the Apple brand (as they usually does)

  • Networking ~ File Sharing With Windows Vista

Alright, I've browsed enough of the web and I've tried a lot to try and resolve this issue, but none of it has worked at all for me. Here's my scenario about as specific as it gets:
I have a home private network consisting of two Windows Vista PCs, a HP Photosmart Printer, a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.1, and an iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.4. The network is routed through a Medialink MWN-WAPR300N router connected to a Time Warner Cable modem which goes to the Internet. My primary PC, the MacBook Pro, and the iPhone 5 all connect wirelessly; the other PC and printer connects via Ethernet. All devices connect to the Internet flawlessly, and they are all assigned a static LAN IP address through the router because I portforward to one of my PCs, and the router requires it. The network was originally configured using one of the PCs as a Private network under the default workgroup, "WORKGROUP". Everything else router-specific is automatic.
Here's the problem: My MacBook and my primary PC do not communicate over the network at all. Both the MacBook and my primary PC can file share with the other PC connected via Ethernet, and they can both print just fine. After using LAN Scan v1.02 by Nutec Apps, LLC on my iPhone however, neither my primary PC nor the MacBook Pro shows up on the list of LAN devices. But that's not all, the MacBook Pro always recognizes the other PC via Ethernet in Finder, and the MacBook Pro can be found in both PC's Network list. However, when I try to connect to it via my primary PC, it says that "[My MacBook] is not a valid host name." What?
To futher satisfy my curious mind, I set up a small Peer-to-Peer network between my primary PC and the MacBook Pro via Ethernet. Both devices instantly recognized each other and connected without any issues. I was able to transfer files at approximately 100mb/s and I was stoked. I then disconnected and tried to transfer over the network again, and there was nothing there. I have even done ping tests over the network to the MacBook Pro's LAN IP address, and it came back with no response.
I've restarted both computers numerous times, played around with file sharing settings, set appropriate sharing permissions, disabled firewalls, enabled sharing for Windows on the MacBook Pro, enabled file sharing on the Windows PC, you name it. I'm sure there is a small fix that I may have overlooked, but I cannot figure out what the problem is for the life of me. Because the operation worked via Ethernet, and it's working wireless-to-Ethernet, but not wireless-to-wireless, I have a feeling that the problem is related to one or both of the wireless configurations.
Thanks in advance for any help provided, if there is anything I missed I will be happy to proivde more details per request. This issues has been bugging me for weeks now and it's time I seeked professional help

The section in question is where it says bridge100 because the IP address listed under that section reads 192.168.2.1, as previously suggested. However another IP address is listed above it as 192.168.1.104, which is exactly what it should be as I have it assigned via DHCP in the router. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, because this is driving me crazy.
PS: I apologize for the confusion. I made a typo in my previous post about my MacBook's LAN IP address. It should be 192.168.1.104, not 103. I can confirm that it is listed as *.104 in my router and it shows *.104 on the above ifconfig. Please ignore the *.103, thanks

  • File Sharing With Windows

Right this is annoying the **** out of me. I've enabled everything I should on my Mac to get it sharing with windows. I'm convinced I've broke my OSX, but there's clearly something I've missed which is stopping this from working that maybes someone else can see! So here we go
    Gone to system preferences, sharing
    -> Ticked file sharing
-> Ticked share files over SMB
    -> Ticked my user
-> Added what I want to share and gave permission to everyone as read/write for public folder.
-> Gone to network preferences and setup the WINS server to the same group as my windows PC
Just got the standard apple firewall running on my mac. I've tried disabling this and letting anything through.
The problem im having is my windows laptop cant see my mac quite often. Sometimes it can, and when it can see my mac it only displays shared printers rather than any of my shared folders. The problem here is that I dont have any printers on my mac, and printer sharing is not enabled.
Any idea why this isnt working? I've disabled windows firewall/any other firewall on my windows laptop. My windows laptop can happily access the FTP and HTTP on my Mac. Just has issues file sharing.
I actually had this working a while ago for a day, then it's never worked since. I cant for the **** of it figure out why. I've gone through loads of tutorials to see if i've missed things. Some things have even told me to change a registry file in windows, which I've done to no success.
    Cheers in advance!
