File size (desktop PS)

Dear all, I realize that my very small file image size 314k (both seen in desktop and bridge having that file size) were enlarged to 3.52M (Doc: 3.52M / 3.52M) instantly when I open up in PS without doing anything at all. Can any seniors here kindly explain?
(I am doing some testing to learn) And when I saved the image to Max, file size become 700K +. Wanted to know the difference, I tired to open the 700K file in PS again. And again, it show 3.52M.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

OK, Junior, this old geezer here, being as old as the hills, will give it a shot.
This is Photoshop 101, and is explained in the help files.  Also a forum search would have revealed many threads here in which your beginner's question has been answered.  Google is always your friend.
The key word here is Compression.  The size you refer to as "in Photoshop" is the size of your decompressed image in RAM.  Note I wrote image, not "image file".
What you see in the Mac Finder or in Windows Explorer—what you refer to as "in desktop" [sic]—is the size of your compressed image file on disk or in Bridge.
Especially JPEGs will vary greatly due to the brutal compression levels you can use.  Also, every single time that you open and save a JPEG, it gets re-compressed all over again with a corresponding further loss in image quality, over and over again.
The following boilerplate text contains a link that i urged you to read. It's about how to post questions here, and one of the points it stresses is that you are supposed to do your due diligence before posting here.

  • Why are files in Firefox 33 cache directory different size than saved files on desktop

In previous versions of Firefox I used the cache directory to extract videos, flash files and hidden images, that were not saved in folder and a HTML Document file on desktop. For Example the opening image of a YouTube Video can not be extracted and saved from Firefox but is stored in the cache directory.
To find these files without going through them one at a time, I would copy the cache folder on a desktop folder and then use Double Killer to delete the same size files in both the cache and the saved files in the desktop file folder. The files that are left behind in the cache folder are those that did not save to the desktop file and folder. I can then double check to see if I can find the videos, flash or images from the remaining files.
I have updated to Firefox 30.0.3. The problem now is that the files in the cache are different in KB size from the saved files on the desktop folder. The dimensions of a saved image are the same but the size of the file differ. Now I can not use Double Killer to delete files and have to go through the whole cache directory one by one to find files that were not saved.
Why did the Firefox developers changed the cache directory? Do I need to revert to a previous version of Firefox or is there a way that I can change the cache directory of Firefox 33.0.3 and the size that it stores files.
Would also like to know what add-on gives the best quality screenshot with flash.
Thanks for this support. Apart from this cache problem I find Firefox easy to use and the best web browser.

Current Firefox 32+ releases use a new cache service named Cache2 and this cache service works differently.
Files in the cache2 folder are special files that also store the meta data apart from the actual file data that you see on the about:cache page if you click an item.

  • Problem with CS2 edit file size

When I create a new version of a 3-4mb original, make a few simple modifications in CS2 and save back to Aperture the resulting version is almost 70mb. If I export this version from Ap back to my desktop and check file size it is back to near the original size. Yet, when I check the file size stored in my Ap library, it is 70mb. This will fill my hard drive in a hurry! Can someone help explain this ??

I did a little more experimenting by making external edits in PS on a 3.9mb JPG file in both Aperture and Lightroom to see what the resulting file sizes were. In both cases I left the master outside the library so that I could see file additions in both the application library and in the folder containing the originals and revisions. I looked into the file directories to determine real file sizes rather than relying on info from the applications. The increase in library file size was small in both apps. However, there was a significant difference in the revised file size between Aperture & Lightroom in the folders containing the originals. The best I could do in Aperture produced a 24.6mb psd revised file, which showed as a version in the App., in addition to the master. Lightroom gives the option to revise the master or revise a copy of the master when exporting. When revising a copy of the master, the result was a new jpg file approximately the same size as the master - 3.9mb - which appeared as a version. This is what I would like to be able to do in Aperture.
I have been using PS for several years for all my photo enhancements and have developed a pretty comfortable and effective routine. Having used Aperture for a couple of months now, I can see that most minor edits can be done more easily in Aperture, but the same is true of Lightwell. Although I would probably only use PS on less than 25% of my keeper photos, this increased storage requirement seems more trouble than the advantages of Aperture vs Lightroom are worth. Maybe Apple will make a change in the next revision that will effect this situation and make Aperture more desirable for JPG shooters.
    Thanks Again,
    Bob

  • Edit file size disagreement

Editing the library of Aperture is covered by using Textwrangler, but I post this in hopes someone else had the exact same issue and that they can share their info on how they resolved it.
I have a file library that contains referenced files. Looks like a bug in Aperture causes a photo edited in an external editor to have a mis-matched file size. Hmm, this is problematic as I'm spending hours troubleshooting this issue.
It looks like I should just re-import it at this point, but I initially wanted to avoid that issue. Textwrangler seemed to be a good idea, but I can't go modifying it without a roadmap. Where are the attributes of file size(s) stored within Aperture's library?
When I'm in Textwrangler, I take the filename and +f it. It locates it fine within Textwrangler, but what do I do next? It's referring to another file it seems.
Here is a screenshot to show my problem.

  • Edit File Size?

Is it possible to edit or modify the (file) size of a photo using iPhoto? Thanks.
    Background Notes:
I've uploaded a couple of photos to my .Mac site, but when I view them on my website, the photo takes up the whole page rather than just a small part of it.
I hand-code the pages I upload to my .Mac site using.
I know I can do this using Adobe Photoshop but that's an added expense I really can't afford right now.

I need to export a photo at around 1meg file size, and dont seem to be able to do it in the presets can anyone help please ,I shoot on a canon 5d

I believe Frank is referring to the end use (e.g., for print or on-screen use).
Until he returns, I can tell you that I ran a quick test using an image from the Aperture 3 training book library which was as follows:
Camera = Canon EOS 5D Mark II
    Master resolution = 5616 x 3744 (21 MP)
I was able to export to a JPEG with end file size of 1 MB as follows:
Export Presets drop-down > select 'Edit' option
Selected preset name 'JPEG - 50% of Original Size' > change percentage value to 40% > change DPI value to '300' > click OK to set as current default > Export version to desktop.
The exported JPEG has a resolution of 2246 x 1498 and appears on screen to have the same image quality of the original in Aperture.
Note - I did not change the default Image Quality slider in the Export Preset dialog (which left it at 10).
Basically, you will need to play around with the settings until you find the appropriate values to arrive at an image version you want.

  • Excel output file size is large - How to make it small in size?

    Hi,
An Excel file out put is too large when I get it from application. If I copy and paste the same content in an excel sheet , the size is too small.
    How can I fix this?
Excel output size from application - 12.4 MB - 4500 records
copy paste file size - 827 KB
    Oracle EBS 11.5.10.2
BI Publisher Desktop Version - 10.1.3.4.2
    Thanks in advance.

BIP generates an XHTML output with mime-type xls and thus Excel is invoked when it is downloaded. XHTML is text and therefore it is lenghty. When you copy and paste it in Excel you save it in binary format and compress.
My suggestion is create an excel template instead of rtf. Not sure if this is possible for EBS (open a ticket with Oracle Support to confirm you can use excel templates in EBS the version you have).
    Reference:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/xmlpublisher/entry/real_excel_templates_i
In this way your output will be a truly binary file with size much more smaller.

  • How do I move an audiobook file from desktop to iTunes

I have just joined the local library and I am attempting to borrow my first audiobook. I have downloaded an app called BorrowBox as instructed and downloaded the audiobook which has appeared on my desktop. I was hoping to get this on to my ipod  to listen on the go. The file that appeared on my desktop is - Trojan Dog 1-28  - type of file - iTunes music player (.zip) - opens with iTunes - size 280MB. I right click on file on desktop and select "open with iTunes" but no sign of audiobook in iTunes library. I have tried twice to contact help and support at Bolinda Digital who provide the BorrowBox app but received no reply and the library staff can't help. Would be grateful if anyone can help.

    Hi
You should change media type from music to audiobook. You will not be able to do this with match turned on.
    Options -
turn off match and make change or
delete books and rerip, changing media type before import or
delete from library and cloud, keep file, readd book and change media kind before match scans your library.

  • How can I find the file size of an image within an iPhoto event or album?

In order to see the file size of any particular photo, I've been dragging a copy onto my desktop and using "get info." Is there a better way?
    I'm using 10.7.4 and iPhoto 11 v 9.3.2

    1. That's only getting the file size of the Preview.
    2. Click on a photo to select it. Then click on the info button. You can get the dimensions and the file size in the top of the pane
Note that the final size of any image will depend on the export settings you choose.

  • Export QuickTime file with new audio and maintain the file size and quality as the original.

I shot some footage for a client yesterday and ran into an issue. To make a long story short I have QuickTime mov files shot with my Panasonic GH4 that have a buzzing sound in the audio track. I have clean audio from a recorder that can be sync'd. Is there a way for me to do this for the client and deliver them as the same QuickTime file but with the clean audio and keep the file size close to the original and not have quality loss in the image?
If so I will probably put all of the spanned clips together from each interview and sync the audio before delivery. I am just not sure which codec will give the client the same quality footage compared to the originals and not have a massive difference in the overall file size. They did request that they be Quicktime MOV files though so that is a must.
I don't see this as an option in the codecs in the export settings in PP, but is there a way to export as ProRes or another MAC native codec that will save them from having to convert it on their end? I am on a PC with Adobe CS5.5 so I am not too familiar with MACs, but from what I understand they would need to convert the files if I sent them straight out of the camera.
I found some related search results for this but they pertained to "Best quality" for export. I am not sure how the varying options work but I don't want to create files that are considerably larger, just not less quality.
If anyone has experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Cole

Here's the workflow: I imported the video footage into iMovie '08 and did my edits. Then I exported it (share) to my desktop with compression set @ 740 X 480. Then I used QuickTime Pro to fix the audio track. The file plays perfectly with both audio tracks working. It's a QuickTime file (.mov).
I hope this jars any replies as to why the file when uploaded to my iWeb gallery drops the second audio track.
    Hmm,

  • How do I find out the file size of my photos, and change them to the size

This will sound inane, but I cannot figure out where to find the file size of my photos in iPhoto. I need a jpeg of a certain file size and image size for my blog background, but can't figure out how to even start.

If the limited quality options do not get you the file size you need export the full size image files to a folder on your Desktop and use Resize! to batch resize the image dimensions and file size (jpeg compression level) to what you need.
With Resize! you can fine tune the pixel dimensions and file size.

  • Fix file size of local time machine backup

    Hi all,
I'm having an issue where after copying over Backups.backupdb from my 1.5 GB external drive to another iMac, it shows that folder as now being 6.27 TB. The local disk on the iMac is 1 TB.
The resson I copied over Backups.backupdb to the iMac is that suddenly one day when connecting the external drive to my MacBook, (This external drive was used with the MacBook as a Time Machine backup) I was promted with a warning that there was a problem with the external drive and that I should copy the files over to another location and reformat the external drive. After copying over the files on the external drive to the iMac I then reformatted it.
So, the issue is that Finder reads that the Backups.backupdb is 6.27 TB and I can't copy it back over to the newly reformatted external drive.
If anyone has any insight, I would really apreciate it if someone could tell me if it's possible to:
modify Backups.backupdb and it's contents sitting on the iMac to show it's actual file size, correct the permissions and extended attributes?
copy over Backups.backupdb to the external dirve in some other way (I tried via Terminal but with no luck)?
    Thanks in advanced!
    Paul

    I had the same problem!
Time machine folder was using around 230GB on a 1Tb disk space.
Had to format the disk because Time Machine was stucked at "preparing backup" or something similar after 6 months without using it.
But after transferring it's main folder to my desktop, it is now showing 1.6Tb size!
I can't move it back to the 1TB disk after format and I as need to do a clean reinstall to my Macbook Pro HDit seems I will have to trash my Time Machine saved folder an loose all it's contents if I can not find a solution.
    Is there any fix?
Or I just have to let go this folder?
Even folders inside it, like documents or desktops from previous backups are huge in size!

  • First time user questions (managing library, file size defaults, cropping,)

    I'm on my first Mac, which I am enjoying and am also using iPhoto '08 for the first time which is a great tool. It has really increased my efficiency in editing a lot of photos at one time. However, the ease of use makes a couple custom things I want to do difficult. I'd appreciate any feedback;
    1) I often want to get at my files for upload or transfer to another machine. When I access Photos with my Finder I can only see "Iphoto Library" (or something like that) which does not show the individual files. Very annoying. I have found that i can browse to one of the menus and select "Open Library" and then I can see all the files.
How can I make it default to this expanded setting? When I am uploading pictures via a web application, for instance, the file open tool does not usually give me the option to Open the library. By Default, I would like the library to always be expanded so I do not have to run iPhoto or select "open" to view the files.
Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
    2) Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file? My camera will output 10MB files and after a simple straighten or crop, iPhoto will save them to 1MB files.
Ignoring the debate on file size, is there a way to control the jpg compression so I can stay as close to what came out of the camera as possible?
    3) I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
While I know this may be useful for some people, it is time consuming when going through hundreds of photos to constantly have to choose "5x7" from the drop down list. Is there a way to make this the default?
I'm sure I'll have some more questions, but thus far, I've been real happy with iPhoto.
    4) The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it. I'm open to any tips on that one as well....
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
The format of the iPhoto library is this way because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
What's above is what's on offer. Remember, iPhoto is NOT a file organiser, it's a photo organiser. If you want to organise files, then use a file organiser.
Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file
You don't. Though losing 9MB off a 10MB files is excessive. Where are you getting these file sizes.
I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
Straightening also involves cropping. Best to straighten first, then crop.
The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it.
If you use the hack detailed above be very careful, it's easy to corrupt the iPhoto Library, and making changes to the iPhoto Package File via the Finder or another app is the most popular way to go about it.

    TD
