File size doesn't diminish after archiving

I have noticed this more often but I reckoned that the other party would receive a compressed file. Now an mp3 file is sent back because it is too big. After I've archived it!
First I used Tiger's built-in archive feature. The result was that I received the 7.6mb file back.
Then I used 'dropstuff' of Stuffit. The result was, as expected, exactly the same.
How on earth is this possible??
All suggestions for a solution are very much welcome!!
eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

You don't say what sort of audio it is and how long it is and what the current bitrate is.
You probably want to reimport it into something like itunes and in the prefs change the import settings to mp3 and choose the bitrate you think will be smallest but still sound good.
Save the prefs and then select the song in itunes and click on the advanced menu and choose 'convert selection to mp3'.

  • File size doesn't update

    On my Win 2008 SP2 Enterprise x64 system I have a ftp application I'm running.  It is downloading a file.  When I look at the file in Windows Explorer or with the DOS dir command the file size + last modify time aren't current and can be many hours
    old.
    If I then look at the file properties via right click and Properties I see the same.  Close the Properties box, exit the folder, then go back to the folder and the file size/modify time are correct.
    The drive is set to "optimize for quick removal" (cache disabled) and if I'm downloading several files the size discrepancy can be several GB - more than my system RAM.  The folder isn't shared.  Shadow copies is disabled.
    Event logs show no problem and saving to a different disk doesn't resolve it.
    Thoughts?

    Hi Dennies,
    Here is the result I got:
    It is not a bug, but rather just the way that NTFS works.
    The file IS getting updated, but the file Size is just not being updated along with it until some outside event forces a refresh of the file size on disk (F5 or file completion)

  • PDF file size increases several folds after OCR

    Hello,
    I've been using Acrobat Pro 9.  Whenever I receive a scanned PDF from someone, I always try to OCR it.  I thought this would reduce the file size because it's saved as text characters instead of images.  However, the file size actually increases several folds.  For example I just had a scanned PDF with original size of 3M, but after OCR (settings:  searchable image, downsample to 300dpi), the file size is > 19M.  This is a legal document with no pictures or diagrams.  Even ClearScan gives a result of 15M file.  Could you help explain why and how I can change this?  Thank you.
    Hung

    I just did an OCR with Searchable Image (exact); and here are all results
    Original:  3,046 KB
    Searchable Image (300dpi):  19,408 KB
    Searchable Image (Exact) (600dpi):  3,377 KB
    ClearScan (300dpi):  14,813 KB
    So in this example, Searchable Image (exact) only causes about 10% increase in size.  I used Save As "PDF" (not "Reduced Size PDF" or "Optimized PDF"...).  Does this make sense?  Thank you.

  • What is the maximum file size allowed by Yosemite's Archive Utility?

    I've seen radically different answers to this question, ranging from ".zip files have a 4GB size limit" to "no limit other than the OS maximum file size". It's been very difficult to find current info on this.
    I have lots of large folders full of recording projects --- I'm talking up to 45GB or so --- and I've been experimenting with different methods of zipping them in preparation for cloud backup. Several applications have been willing to zip my enormous folders into archives, but then choke when unzipping them, telling me that the files cannot be unzipped or are corrupted. Using the "Compress" shortcut in the finder has so far yielded the best results, keeping all necessary resource forks, etc., and unzipping properly, even when other apps have insisted the files are corrupted. However, I'm afraid to continue with this procedure until I can get a straight answer on this issue: have I just been lucky so far? IS there an actual size limit?
    ...It only seems to work when I both zip and unzip with the Archive Utility. Other archiving apps will either render the included projects unreadable by my recording software when zipping (I suspect because of alteration or stripping of resource forks), or will refuse to read the giant .zip archives generated by Archive Utility.
    I've set up the Archive Utility to produce .zip files, as I feel these are the most likely to be recognized by a variety of cloud storage services.ny
    ...Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

  • Reduce File Size?  - At or After Render Queue

    I have an Adobe After Effects final composition that runs at time of 0;01;36;24 at 29.97 fps, with no audio, and it is built for replay on a 27" 1920x1200 monitor. There is no live action video included, only Adobe Illustrator assets are imported and manipulated. I have minimal (1 instance) of using the After Effects 'Effects and Presets' tools. Additionally, I have included cameras and lights, and my final composition is composed of 8 pre-comps.
    When I export (or render queue) the final comp, it comes out being a file size of 17.+ GB. Obviously, this is not conducive to transport, or play back. I can render it off at half resolution (960x600), but it appears blurry when viewed on the 27" monitors. (no doubt because I am mentally comparing it to the full version).
    Is there a way to render the composition off at 3/4 resolution, OR use a codec to reduce the file size without loosing dropping the resolution by half or less?

    David -
    Yeah, I tried that one, but it still had a file size that was far from manageable. But, I did find the setting through the RENDER QUEUE. But thanks anyway.
    For anyone who is looking for this information. Select WINDOW > Render Queue. (This will bring it up as an window where the timeline panel is.)
    Drag your composition into the Render Queue
    Under 'Output Options' (it may be called something else, not sure) Click the 'Format Options' Button. Under the drop down menu, select SORENSON 3 (from my understanding, this is one the best lossy compression codecs available).
    Then go back to the render queue and press the render button, it may take a while, but it reduced my 17GB file down to 216MB with minimal loss.

  • Reduce File Size doesn't work!

    When I click the (new) option 'Reduce File Size' in Keynote '09 the app prompts a estimated new size which is smaller than the current size. When I click on 'Reduce' the app doesn't do anything except for showing an error report which tells me something like: "..the file size was not reduced", for all of the files included. They are just regular .jpg/.png and .psd files. Did anyone else notice this bug..?

    I'd say if it is a very large file with multiple large images, it might not be actually freezing, just taking its sweet time.
    It's why I leave Activity Monitor running when I use iWork applications.
    This way, I know ifd the app is dead or if it's heavily busy.
    Either that or it has nothing to do. It trims and reduces the resolution of bitmap images to 72dpi. There will be a fair bit of work if you have transparency in the document.
    It doesn't do a very good job IMHO and to reduce the file by 90% is a big ask.
    The 'Reduce FileSize' feature isn't linked to the 'export to PDF' feature.
    As explained, before applying "Reduce file size" it's good practice to "Reduce Image File Size".
    This will drop the parts of the pictures which aren't displayed.
    The asked task doesn't imply a reduction of the pictures by 90%.
    As I already wrote several times, it's more efficient to crop images to the really used area *_before inserting them in a Pages document_*.
    A Pages document is huge by nature because the Index.xml file describing its contents is highly verbose.
    If the document was saved with the 'embed Preview.pdf' feature active, the size of this PDF is adding a lot of used space.
    I'd print to pdf and reduce the quality in Acrobat Pro.
    Most of us don't own Acrobat Pro.
    I feel that it would be a bit silly to buy an application whose price is : 450$ as a complement for a 80$ set of applications.
    Before doing that, I would
    (a) crop pictures before inserting them
    (b) try to enhance Pages behaviour for free installing enhanced PDF filters.

  • IPhoto changing file size to 0 kb after only a few edits

    I am uploading approx 5mb sized files directly from my camera into iPhoto. after just a few edits ( rotate, crop, color boost - nothing but presets) the file size is reduced to 0 kb and I cannot access the photo from any other program ( upload to facebook, email, slideshow). I can still see the thumbnail with the edits I made but can only do any thing with it if I revert to original. When it changes back to the original file size as well as the original photo. I am using version 8.1.2

    Then that  suggests the original Library is corrupt.
    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • How to reduce the swf file size of an imported After Effects file

    Hi!
    I am trying to make a web banner for an internet marketing company, so it has very specific requirements. We had it made in After Effects, and I was able to export it as a FLV file and import to Flash just fine along with the SWF. Now, I need to make the SWF file significantly smaller.
    Right now it is 2.5 MB and we can only submit a 40K size SWF. Is it even possible to reduce the size so much and still keep the animation's intregrity?
    I am more familiar with Flash than After Effects, but can play around with settings, etc if someone can tell me what to try.
    Thank you for your help!

    the easiest way to load and play your flv is to use an flvplayback component.  you just drag it from the component panel to the stage and, in the properties panel, assign its properties (eg, skin and source).
    but that will probably put you just over your 40kb limit and will require the skin.swf to be placed on the server with your banner ad.
    to decrease your swf size to negligible, use actionscript to play your flv.  this is the barebones code needed.  just replace your_video_url.flv:
    var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
    nc.connect(null);
    ns:NetStream = new NetStreamnc);
    ns.play("your_video_url.flv");
    var video:Video = new Video();
    video.attachNetStream(ns);
    addChild(video);

  • Changing file associations doesn't work after CS4 install

    I am running into an issue on any machine I install CS4 on in which I would like (for the time being) to keep CS2 or CS3 on whereby the Open with in get info always defaults to the particular CS4 app, no matter if I set it to CS2/CS3 and hit change all. You can do an individual file and set the .indd file to open in ID CS2, but if you try to force a change all to default any .indd file to open with ID CS2, it reverts automatically back to ID CS4.
    I have tried this on various workstations with differing OS's, Tiger, Leopard, and all yield the same result. It is like no matter what you do all the CS4 apps have precedence for whatever reason and cannot be universally overridden. Any ideas or others that have run into this?
    I have use Onyx to clean up the Launchservice databases and to clean up associations, have thrown out some plists, etc. and nothing is working.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Brian

    Thanks, Bob. I will take a look at, but it might not be exactly what I was hoping for as I was hoping to avoid the user from having to drag files onto something just to open them up.
    Any ideas why CS4 overrides the ability to globally set the Open with to CS2 or CS3 but you still can on just one document?
    Odd behavior.

    Jpgs should never be edited, except as a last resort. And it defeats the purpose of working with raw files if you export a jpg, and then edit it.
    Agreed. Unfortunately there are many cameras that only output JPEG format files. The camera file (or any other original JPEG file) is your "raw" unedited file inside LR. If you need to send the file to someone else for further editing who doesn't have LR then Exporting with 100% Quality setting might make sense. I say "might" because it's still possible to get very good results using lower Quality setting JPEGs if you only re-save the file one (1) time after further editing. I agree that 16 bit, ProPhoto RGB, TIFF Export files are best for "critical" work and when using 'Edit in Photoshop' from LR.
    I suggest taking a look at the JPEG compression image tests on Jeffrey Friedl's Blog. It's a wealth of information! LR's Quality settings range from 0% to 100% or 100 Quality levels. In reality there are only 13 Quality levels, which are the same as in PS.

    Why not simply Import the JPEG file into LR and do all your editing non-destructively? There's no need to convert the JPEG file to TIFF unless you need to use LR 'Edit in PS.' Lightroom uses a16 bit/color, ProPhoto RGB, Linear Gamma workspace for all images even when editing sRGB JPEG files.

  • File size vs pixel count - slowing down my library?

    Hello all,
    I've been scanning 35mm slides at a high resolution (so that I can enlarge, crop, etc) then loading into my Aperture library. The files are between 5-7 Mb each but are approx 8000x5500 pixels which I calculate to be 44 megapixels. I currently have about 750 of these files (plus a few thousand pics from my xsi) in my library and they seem to be really bogging down my 2006 macbook, especially if I try to round-trip to photoshop or print a light table to PDF. It just comes to a screeching halt. I know that for 99% of the pics this resolution is overkill, so I'm planning on exporting them all to fit them to a 5x7 print at 400dpi. I'll then remove the originals from my library and re-import the smaller files.
    If I export the jpegs at a quality of 12, the file size doesn't change too much, even though the pixel count is now only 5.6 megapixels. So my questions are:
    1. Are these large files really bogging down my machine, or is there something else going on?
    2. Will reducing the pixel count have any effect on performance, even if the file size doesn't change much?
    3. Will reducing the file size (ie, change the jpeg quality to 10) have any effect on performance?
    BTW, all files are referenced masters, my library is on one usb drive, and the masters are on another usb drive. This is the best I've come up with, given the limited space on my internal drive. Could this be slowing me down?
    Thanks a lot,
    John

    It's probably not a very fast drive in the first place...
    I know that 5MB isn't very big, but for some reason it takes a lot longer to open these scanned files in photoshop (from aperture) than the 5MB files from my camera. Any idea why this is?
    Have a look at the file size of one of those externally edited files for a clue - it won't be 5MB. When Aperture sends a file out for editing, it creates either a PSD or an uncompressed TIFF after applying any image adjustments that you've applied in Aperture, and sends that out. Depending on the settings in Aperture's preferences this will be in either 8-bit or 16-bit.
    As a 16-bit uncompressed TIFF, a 44 megapixel image weighs in at a touch over 150MB...

    We have a client who is not using biztalk but transmitting files to us via AS2. The AS2 file transmission occurs seamlessly when the file size is below 5MB, but Biztalk AS2 decoder fails to decrypt when file size exceeds 5MB. After searching the forums,

    First, make sure CU5 wasn't unintentionally applied by Windows Update to your test config.
    Second, either way, a valid strategy would be to apply CU5 as a normal patch, meaning DEV->TEST->UAT->PROD (or whatever your promotion path is).  That way, you'll test for any breaking changes anyway and if the AS/2 issues isn't fixed, well,
    you really no worse off.

  • How to reduce jpg file size, not pixel dimensions?

    I am preparing images for the web and I really have 2 questions: one about gifs, and one about jpgs.
    My standard procedure is to reduce the image to the desired pixel dimensions at 600 dpi
    That gives me a crisp small image. then I either use it as is if the file size is low enough (I try for under 600 kb) or convert it to a gif with the save for web and devices tool.
    So here are my 2 questions (I will count this solved with either answer)
    1) When I convert to a gif I have the 4 boxes: one with original size, the other 3 with options but often the options are too low res for me How do I change my 3 options to start at a higher gif res?
    2) If I try to reduce the file size of the jpg in the image size box I set the resolution lower ( 400, 300), which lowers the pixel dimensions and the filesize, but I don't want to cahnge the pixel dimensions. And  If I reset the pixel dimensions back to the size I want them, even though it is a lower resolution the file size doesn't change. How to reduce jpg file size using only the resolution, not pixel dimensions?  PS I have tried messing with checking and unchecking the 3 little boxes( scale styles, constrain proportions, and resample) but nothing has worked.

    Gif is not a great filetype, especially if you want a crisp image. What are your pixel dimensions?
    For web, it makes no difference what the dpi is, only the final pixel dimensions so once you have that as you want, use 'Save for Web and Devices' and you can lower the quality - 100% being max and 0% being lowest. I wouldn't save anything below 55%. For a 600kb image, your dimensions must be rather big.

  • Preview file size explodes for JSTOR PDFs

    I've discovered that when I use PREVIEW to open and then save PDFs downloaded from JSTOR (www.jstor.org), the file size explodes: from 500K to 8 MEGs, for example. This happens only with PREVIEW (though also with PDFPEN), but not with AdobeReader, and it only seems to happen with JSTOR PDFs. Has anyone else noticed this behaviour?

    I think I may have figured it out. There is a preference option for "PDF" called "Respect Screen DPI for Scale". If I turn that off, the file size doesn't explode. That may be a new option, or just an option that got switched on in my transition to Leopard.
    However... now that it's stopped happening, I can't make it start by switching that preference back on, so that makes me doubt whether it really is the culprit. So long as my file sizes aren't exploding I'm happy, but I would like to understand why it happens.
