File size extremely high for .avi after render PE 9

I'm very new to PE and have tried to learn quick to redact info (faces etc) in .avi files for a government agency. I was able to open the file (in the trial version) and make the track matte by dragging the original file to the timeline then dragging it again to the video 2 timeline for the top layer, Question 1) is this the same as copy and paste or am I doubling the size already? Anyway, I was able to get the matte and everything done. Now, to Render and save... I choose computer/avi again (I need to keep it the same) and it took 1 hr 45 min to render it, that seemed long to me but maybe not... but mainly the file size was then 100,883 kb! Starting with a 29.7 kb file. This is what my question is about....could this be right? I can't use it if this is what I get. So, here are the particulars as I got G-spot and looked it up, as per serveral suggestions I saw here. I'm trying to understand the CODEC info but I fear I have a ways to go before I can figure out what I did wrong. (This is my test computer, the future work would be done on a newer, better computer).  The videos I would be working with come from various sources and will vary in length but will probably all be a kind of avi.
Intel Pentium processor 1600 mhz
221 mhz, 2.00 gb ram
Microsoft windows xp sp3
video:
length: 0:27.261
frms:  817
Kbps: 28770
pic:  720x480
codec: dvsd dvc/dy
I appreciate any help you can give

Thanks for you response and the information was very helpful. I was able to choose and output that gave me a good file size and I do want DV-AVI (I don't remember what I chose but it worked) but, I don't see an option for DV-AVI - is that a general DV output selection, because there seem to be numerous (AVCHD, NTSC, DV STANDARD) acronyms (I have tried to understand what each is) which do I want?

Re: File size extremely high for .avi after render PE 9 created by Bill Hunt in Premiere Elements - View the full discussion
For the use of Track Matte Keying, with say a Gaussian Blur, or maybe Moasic Effect, if you have not altered the In & Out Points, then just dragging the Asset to both Video 1 and Video 2 will work fine. If you HAVE adjusted the In & Out Points, you can just click-drag from the Source Monitor, where you set those In & Out Points, and all is good. The Copy/Paste is just another way to do it.
As you are doing an "overlay," the output File Size will not be affected in any way. You are also limiting the Blur, or Effect on Video 2 to just the area "exposed" by the Track Matte, so the pixel count will not be altered.
As Steve points out, the output CODEC in the AVI will determine the output File Size. File Size is basically determined by the Timeline's Duration and by the Bit-Rate of the output file. With DV-AVI, that Bit-Rate is pretty well set, and your Timeline determines the Duration. At ~ 13GB/hour, a DV-AVI will be pretty large, but that is the nature of the beast. Also, and as Steve points out, if you are going to do additional editing, and will be Importing that file into a New Project, DV-AVI is about as good, as it gets.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Iphoto showing wrong file size and length for movie after upgrade

in iphoto, an AVI from my camera is shown as being 1:04 long and 76 MB. but playing the file shows it is 9 seconds long, and Finder shows the file as being 10 MB.
a bit more about this file: I shot the video with my still camera and imported it. on the camera, I then edited it down from 1:04 to 0:09, and reimported it. both files were in my iphoto library before upgrading to iphoto '08; iphoto saw they had different lengths and did not consider them duplicates.
now, I see only one file with the time of 1:04 (the original length) and it plays the edited version. while I would prefer to have both versions, as I did before, I would more like to know why iphoto is showing the wrong information for a file the was fine in the previous version of iphoto.

  • Extremely high memory usage after upgrading to Firefox 12

After I upgraded to Firefox 12, I began frequently experiencing Firefox memory usage ballooning extremely high (2-3GB after a few minutes of light browsing). Sometimes it will drop back down to a more reasonable level (a few hundred MB), sometimes it hangs (presumably while trying to garbage collect everything), and sometimes it crashes. Usually the crashing thread cannot be determined, but when it can be, it is in the garbage collection code ( [https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/list?signature=js%3A%3Agc%3A%3AMarkChildren%28JSTracer*%2C+js%3A%3Atypes%3A%3ATypeObject*%29] ).
I was able to capture an about:memory report when Firefox had gotten to about 1.5 GB and have attached an image.
A couple of things I've tried. I have lots of tabs open (though the Don't load tabs until selected option is enabled), so I copied my profile, kept all my extensions enabled, but closed all my tabs. I then left a page open to http://news.google.com/ and it ran fine for several days, whereas my original profile crashes multiple times a day.
I also tried disabling most of my extensions, leaving the following extensions that I refuse to browse without:
    Adblock Plus
    BetterPrivacy
    NoScript
    PasswordMaker
    Perspectives
    Priv3
However, the problem still happened in that case.
Don't know if any of this helps or not. I'm looking forward to trying Firefox 13 when it comes out.

hello, thanks for reporting back with detailed information.
from a brief look at your extensions i don't recognize any known (to me at least) memory leaking ones. in the last weeks there were also reports about the java plugin causing high memory consumption in combination with firefox 12 - in case you have it installed in firefox > addons > plugins try disabling it for a few days & test how firefox is behaving with many tabs.
& although probably not related to the memory problems you could update your graphics driver to get better results with hardware acceleration in firefox - this is the latest driver by intel for your model & os:

  • PGC has an error--data rate of this file is too high for DVD

Getting one of those seemingly elusive PGC errors, though mine seems to be different from many of the ones listed here. Mine is telling me that the data rate of my file is too high for DVD. Only problem is, the file it's telling me has a datarate that is too high, is a slideshow which Encore has built using imported jpg files. I got the message, tried going into the slideshow and deleting the photo at the particular spot in the timeline where it said it had the problem, now getting the same message again with a different timecode spot in the same slideshow. The pictures are fairly big, but I assumed that Encore would automatically resize them to fit an NTSC DVD timeline. Do I need to open all the pictures in Photoshop and scale them down to 720x480 before I begin with the slideshows?

With those efforts, regarding the RAM, it would *seem* that physical memory was not the problem.
I'd look to how Windows is managing both the RAM addresses and also its Virtual Memory. To the former, I've seen programs/Processes that lock certain memory addresses upon launch (may be in startup), and do not report this to Windows accurately. Along those lines, you might want to use Task Manager to see what Processes are running from startup on your machine. I'll bet that you've got some that are not necessary, even if IT is doing a good job with the system setup. One can use MSCONFIG to do a trial of the system, without some of these.
I also use a little program, EndItAll2 for eliminating all non-necessary programs and Processes, when doing editing. It's freeware, has a tiny footprint and usually does a perfect job of surveying your running programs and Processes, to shut them down. You can also modify its list, incase it wants to shut down something that IS necessary. I always Exit from my AV, spyware, popup-blocker, etc., as these progams will lie to EndItAll2 and say that they ARE necessary, as part of their job. Just close 'em out in the Tasktray, then run EndItAll2. Obviously, you'll need to do this with the approval of IT, but NLE machines need all available resources.
Now, to the Virtual Memory. It is possible that Windows is not doing a good job of managing a dynamic Page File. Usually, it does, but many find there is greater stability with a fixed size at about 1.5 to 2.5x the physical RAM. I use the upper end with great results. A static Page File also makes defragmenting the HDD a bit easier too. I also have my Page File split over two physical HDD's. Some find locating to, say D:\ works best. For whatever reason, my XP-Pro SP3 demanded that I have it on C:\, or split between C:\ and D:\. Same OS on my 3 HDD laptop was cool having it on D:\ only. Go figure.
    These are just some thoughts.
Glad that you got part of it solved and good luck with the next part. Since this seems to affect both PrPro and En, sounds system related.

PS some IT techs love to add all sorts of monitors to the computers, especially if networkded. These are not usually bad, but are usually out of the mainstream, in that most users will never have most of these. You might want to ask about any monitors. Also, are you the only person with an NLE computer under the IT department? In major business offices, this often happens. Most IT folk do not have much, if any, experience with graphics, or NLE workstations. They spend their days servicing database, word processing and spreadsheet boxes.

  • How to get the file size (in bytes) for all files in a directory?

How to get the file size (in bytes) for all files in a directory?
The following code does not work. isFile() does NOT recognize files as files but only as directories. Why?
Furthermore the size is not retrieved correctly.
How do I have to code it otherwise? Is there a way of not converting f-to-string-to-File again but iterate over all file objects instead?
    Thank you

Anybody know what's up with the menu.xml.files not being available for DW after installing on a new comp?

Usually that error can be cleared up by renaming the personal config folder. Turn on your OS's hidden files and then go to...
    C: > Users > your username > AppData > Roaming > Dreamweaver (version) > your language > configuration
Rename the configuration folder configuration-old and start DW up. That should create an entirely new configuration folder and correct the menu.xml file.

the file was a 180Mb  H.264 file on import
when i export the file its coming out at 33GB in size.... im not sure why this is

what options should i choose for this?    AE does not seem to tell me how big the end file will be and it takes 1 hour and half to process this 2 minute interview so it will take me an awfull long time to get to the bottom of this if i try by myself
    thanks

It doesn't "increase" the file size. You're making a brand new file.
What you put into After Effects has nothing to do with the resulting file. You can have an AE composition with no footage whatsoever and the resulting file will be much larger than 0!
After Effects works internally with completely uncompressed pixel data, so no matter what you toss into it, it produces whatever you tell it to produce. As Mylenium points out, you made an uncompressed final file.
Your original video file is VERY compressed. So, of COURSE uncompressed video is going to look massive by comparison.
Read Mylenium's link to understand a bit more and go here to learn AE: Getting started with After Effects There are lots of "gotchas" like this that'll bit your butt if you skip this basic training stuff.

  • How to limit file size in LR for photomerge in PS5

Is there a simple way to limit the file size of the photos selected in LR3 for a photomerge in PS5?
I have found that without limiting the size, the panoramas generated are very large - 1GB or greater.
I've found an work around by opening the photos in Bridge and then in Camera Raw where I can reduce the file size before using PS5 for photomerge.  After I've done this, it's a bit of a hassle to get the panorama back into LR3.  The benefit of this approach is that it speeds up the processing significantly and helps downstream with any subsequent processing since the files are just large and not ginormus.
If this isn't possible, this seems like a good idea for LR4.
    Thanks, Chris

A tip of mine that Martin Eveing includes in his Lr2 and Lr3 books is as follows:
    1. In Lr, selct the images you wnat to included in pano
    2. From Edit in Ps menu choose "Open as Layers". The images will all open as layers in CS5
    3. In CS5 choose Image Size from Edit menu and downsize images
    4. In CS5 choose Select all Layers (Cmd+Option+A or Ctrl+Alt+A)
    5. In CS5 Edit menu choose Auto Align.
The rest of the process should be self explantory

  • Acceptable File Size and Resolution for Still Photos in Keyframe Motion

    Hello Hello
I know that FCE HD (as other Video Editors), will automatically fit a still photo's size to it's default capability of 720 x 480 Correct?
Well, in regard to making the best possible ZOOMS, and Pans from Still Photos, is it neccessary to re-size all your photos (from an external editor like photoshop), to a specfic size?
According to an older book for FCE, it sez that actually photos re-sized to 720x534 with a resolution of 72 are best. *The proper proportion for NTSC.
And I noticed that when I inserted larger JPG still sizes (like about a meg), on the FCE timline, and when applying Panning, or Zooms, some of the rendered images with motion didn't pan or zoom smoothly.
Is that because those file sizes were TOO large?
Well I have soooo many stills that need to be imported into this particular project that it would be a lot easier for me to just generally reduce these stills (by percentage).
And is the magic resolution amount supposed to be 72?
Because if that's the case I can re-size all my photos to 72, and try to keep the file sizes down to say 300 KB's or so.
    Sound like a plan?

    Thank you guys
"basically, you should try to make your images large enough so they never have to be scaled beyond 100% in the motion tab in fcp."
Actually as I mentioned some of these file sizes are very large. About 800-900 KB's - and what as a result, what I've noticed is that I actually had to DECREASE the viewing area in both the Browser Window, and the Canvas Winbow just to be able to see the whole image.
Ok - so the 72 DPI is not as important as the dimensions of the photo. But as I said I have soooooo many of these that it would take me forever to manually re-size them all not to mention the fact that re-sizing some of them (odd shapes),would throw the images out of balance.
So again I ask - if there is NO motion applied to the photo, file sizes of about 200 to 350 KB's appear just beautifully ....
    BUT
If I need to PAN or ZOOM, is it ok to laod a 1 MEG sized JPG onto the timeline and start working with Keyframe?????
In fact in some cases I'm actually using these larger file JPS's (1 meg or more), so that they TOTALLLY fit the canvas window (cropping them by enlargment)
*With some clipping of the original image of course ...
    Why do I do this?
So that you don't see the usual border with horizontal images, or vertical images - know what I mean?
    Thanx

  • Huge file size with Save for Web but preview is ok

    Hi,
I have googled but not found anything about this but I have the same problem on my computer and also on a colleagues computer so it seems it should not be totally unknown.
    This is what i do
1 Open a eps file, one color logo, 72dpi, size it to 110x21
    2 save for web
3 select png-24 format. preview says file size ~1.3 kB
4 save -> actual file size on disk is 4 kB (ie 3 times bigger file size than it should be)
5 Preview and then right click in browser + save image as gives correct file size (on my colleagues computer this does not work, he always gets the wrong size)
I have also tried with gif and various settings, image sizes etc and the result is the same.
I'm using Windows Vista 32-bit and Photoshop CS4.
    Is this a known problem?
    Thanks

Thanks for your reply but i don't think that's it. When I check properties on the file in Windows it tells both "Size" and "Size on disk", where the latter is actual size on disk (depending on cluster size) but the size I am talking about is the first one.
Also just to be clear, when I say Preview, I mean clicking the Preview button that opens the file in a browser window. Not the preview within the Save for Web and Devices dialog. So I think this file is correctly created and *should* be the same as if I click Save (but it obviously isn't)
This sounds very much like a bug to me, anyone else who have seen this or can recreate?
    Thanks

  • What file size is used for "optimized" upload/download?

When I upload my photo files from Aperture (and previously from iPhoto) I routinely use the upload setting named "dowloading of optimized" files.  I know that this downsizes the files for faster upload/download, but still gives a file size acceptable for great onscreen presentation and for a resulting small print of someone downloads.  Can anyone tell what downsizing Aperture/iPhoto does in this case?  For example, 50% jpeg, email sized jpeg, etc.  Since Apple will kill the MobileMe galleries in June I have to switch to another photo presentation host.  For upload to such a host Aperture/iPhoto gives choices like 100% jpeg, 50% jpeg, etc.  What I want to do is end up with something similar to what I now get with the "optimized" setting.  Thank you.

You will note that I referenced both programs (iPhoto & Aperture) in my original message above, and I have posted in both forums.  Since both programs offer the same (at least on the surface) option of "optimized" to MobileMe galleries, one might assume that both use the same or a similar system.  Lengthly testing of my own is the "best" solution only if I can not find anyone who is knowledgeable about what these programs do in the upload.  It has been my sincere joy over many many years that I often find people on these forums who possess knowledge much greater than I.  As to the programs changing the algorithum at any time, I doubt that since this MobileMe function will disappear in June.  Seems like a strange time to make changes.

  • 4 GB file size bug and No Audio on render output with Lossless Ut codec and Lagarith ?

    System :
    Win7 x64
    NTFS Raid 0 Drive
    SpeedGrade 2014.0.1
    ******BUG******
Cannot render correctly using Ut lossless codec or Lagarith. Probably due to 4 GB size limit bug.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
A single PAL 25 fps ProRes 1920x1080 clip, 4 minutes long which contains 200 cut/scene changes.
    Split using scene changes detect.
    Choose "split clip"
Applied looks (most of the time, i just use default cinematic 2 with a little bit adjustment)
    Render using lossless codec above.
    Results:
Rendering using small duration (10 seconds) on both Ut and Lagarith, there are no sound produced, although the video render correctly.
Render the whole clip (4 minutes)
On Ut :  The result render is messed up, the clip were overlap, or sometimes it's just resulting a garbage video (blank screen with no sound)
On Lagarith :  Unplayable video (crash to playback/open either in media player or in Adobe Media Encoder)
    Expected results:
The video render result from lagarith and Ut "stuck" on 4 GB file size.
The problem was not occurred if using different codec (Animation lossless), even can produced 18 GB of clip which can playback fine and with audio.
    Note :
I also have report the bug (?) in feature/bug report Adobe web page.
The current workaround is render using Animation (but i don't like it, the size were too big, i cannot export my long project using this codec)

I think that means you get separate video and sound files (but, I don't do BluRay, so could be wrong)

  • FCE File size getting bigger for export to YT

    Hello
I have a 472.6 MB mov file that I am editing into 15 min clips for YT. Been trying to export one for awhile now using FCE and the size of the 15 min clip is 3.4 GB. Have tried doing it in iMovie and it's 176 MB and looks awful.
Been following the instructions for export settings/Quick Time Conversion, there is something that I'm missing, what is it?
    Thanks for your help,

    Thanks for the info.
I followed the directions and the file size is now 463 MB for a 15 min clip. So it's getting smaller.
    Dimensions: 720 x 480
