File size in finder ' get info' does not refresh

I'm moving files about and need to check how large the folders are (in preparation for burning a dvd). 'Get info' is not refreshing the file size (and it's not just enormous folders). I have installed 'Refresh Finder' but it doesn't make any difference. The only way I can see the true file size is by restarting (a pain). What else can I try?

Yes, Finder can be a bit slow to update. It shouldn't be necessary to restart, though; using the force quit dialogue to relaunch Finder should suffice.
Press cmd-opt-esc (⌘⌥ esc) to bring up the dialogue, select Finder and click relaunch.

  • File, get info, does not allow me to add grouping

This function used to work - File, get info.  I could then change Artist, Album, Grouping, Genre, etc.  Now for some reason, I can get the window to pop up, but everything is grayed out.  I can see the info but cannot edit it.  The only thing in black for editing is the start and stop time for the song.  I don't want to edit this.  I need to add a grouping title.  This function used to work before the last program upgrades.  Does anyone know why this might not be working?  Is there a magic box somewhere that needs to be clicked on?  Please help.

  • Get Info does not allow me to manually add album artwork

    Hello,
I am trying to manually upload album artwork on iTunes with my Windows PC (Windows 8.1 64 bit).  I followed all of the steps for doing this as outlined here in the Help section.  I did a Google search, found the album artwork in JPEG format on the internet, and then saved it to a folder on my hard drive. I then went back into iTunes, right clicked on the album that is missing its artwork, and clicked the "Get info" button.  When the next screen opens I select the "Artwork" tab, and then I select the "Add Artwork button."  This opens up a browser for my file directory, and then I went to the folder where I  saved the album artwork and double clicked on the particular JPEG I wanted to add for the CD.  The JPEG was immediately loaded onto the screen, and everything looked good to go. However, when I hit the "OK" button to select this uploaded album artwork which is loaded on the screen, for whatever reason iTunes does not save it, and the album artwork icon for the CD remains blank. Let me know where I am going wrong, or if this is a bug that needs to be addressed.
Also, I have a program called Music Collectorz that I am using to catalog all of my CDs as I burn my collection to iTunes.  For those CDs in which the Collectorz program cannot automatically find or identify the appropriate album artwork on its own, I can open up the Collectorz program's own version of "Get Info" and select "Find Cover Art."  By doing this, the Collectorz program automatically does a search on the internet--without me having to leave the Collectorz program--and retrieves several "hits" it located for the missing artworkwhich it displays on another window within the program. I then simply double click with the mouse on the photo of the artwork file I want to upload to associate with the particular CD, and it is automatically uploaded and associated with the CD. Also, the Collectorz program will only allow you to upload artwork that is saved in file formats and sizes that are supported by the program like JPEG files.
It seems to me that Apple should have an easy way like this to manually add album artwork in iTunes. I should not have to do a separate Google search outside of the iTunes program, then save a JPEG to my hard-drive in another folder, and then go back into iTunes to add (or try to add) it to a CD's profile.  This is a waste of time, and involves several unnecessary steps.  This process should all be incorporated through the iTunes program as a one-stop shop method.  I should never have to leave the iTunes program to add any artwork ever.
I look forward to your response on this.
    Thanks,

I assume that there are legal restrictions on the way in which iTunes can get artwork automatically from any source apart from the iTunes Store (which is what the right-click > Get Album Artwork function uses).  For example, even though the Gracenote service that iTunes uses to match CDs and retrieve metadata (artist, album, track titles, etc.) also has artwork functions, iTunes does not make use of these.
For manual addition of artwork, there are three cases where the image you select may not be correctly embedded in your media files:
your media are in a format that doesn't accommodate embedded artwork - typically WAV files.  To embed artwork you'll need to convert to another format - Apple Lossless or AIFF if you want to preserve lossless quality, AAC or MP3 otherwise.
your media files are read only - to fix this, use Windows Explorer to find the folder that contains your files, right-click and select Properties.  On the General tab there's a check box labeled "Read-only" - if this is checked, or is grey (sometimes blue), click the box so that the flag is unchecked and the box is white.  Click OK, and then OK again when the "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" option selected.  Now try adding the artwork again.
Windows permissions issues are preventing iTunes from updating your media files (there's some anecdotal evidence of a change in this behavior in iTunes 12).  See turingtest2's notes on Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for advice on fixing this, then try adding the artwork again.

  • FINDER: "Get Info" - Window not opening / not working

    Hi All,
I am kinda lost. Since upgrading to 10.6.4, I no longer can open "Get Info" neither through the context menu not through key [cmd+I].
This is in Finder only. On Application Level (iTunes e.g.) it works. I have
checked permissions, they're good. I also have tried another user account,
same issue here. So it's system wide. Is there a known issue with this? I
cannot find it. It is not listed anywhere.
In the Console I can find the following:
    ===========================================================================
12/10/2010 14:15:15 Finder[293] unable to find nib named: InfoWindowMoreInfoView in bundle path: (null)
12/10/2010 14:15:15 Finder[293] HIToolbox: ignoring exception '-[NSViewController loadView] could not load the "InfoWindowMoreInfoView" nib.' that raised inside Carbon event dispatch

    Any Ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Since the issue is systemwide, then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • OS 10.6.8 running iTunes 10.4.1 Get Info does not have option to set 32-bit. What now?

When I start my iTunes I get a message, ""To run Ituns in 32-bit mode, select the iTunes application in the Finder, choose the "Get Info' command in the File menu, and check the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the iTunes Info window.""
There is no "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the iTunes Info window?!!!

I solved it myself by downloading a fresh copy of iTunes from Apple.com and it all worked! No problem with 32-bit on this copy. Yeah!

  • How can I display file size in Finder

    Hi folks,
I am trying to figure out where 40GB of data is hiding. I would like to see file sizes in the Finder window associated with my folders in Mountain Lion 10.8.2..  I'm having, what seems to me, a strange problem. When I 'Get Info' on my Hard Drive, the disc space left is only 40GB out of 120GB (ie used being 80GB). My confusion is that when I painstakingly go through the files, I can only account for 48 GB with 'Get Info' on each folder. This is a rather combersome process and I am hoping there is a work around for viewing the file sizes within Finder and not having to open 'Get Info' on each and every folder like I have been.
    I have a MacAir 13 inch 2011
    Thanks!

Thanks for your time and suggestions, dominic23.
I looked through both links and sadly, none of these suggestions have worked. I have tried many on my own since posting trying to figure out why the volume is being doubled on my hard drive. I've deleted log files, and done a sweep with Onyx to no avail. Strangely, the option of seeing the volumes under 'About this Mac' and 'System' does not have a listing for storage. Weird. I am the only user/administrator on this computer and I don't have shared files.
    I'm just stumped.

  • Repair Permissions - "Info does not esist"

Just curious - Whenever I run Repair Permissions, the first line of the resulting log says "parent directory ./Users/Shared/SC Info does not exist". What is this telling me? The computer seems to be running just fine, and no other problem areas show up on the log. Thanks for the help.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi, R.G.
Well, this could lead to long and tedious UNIX tutorial. The bottom line is that you need not be concerned about this message when you run Repair Permissions from Terminal.
The info you posted is a directory listing. It basically says that the Users > Shared > SC Info folder (directory in UNIX parlance) contains a file called SC Info.sdb. The data from the ls command you issued provides details about the ownership, permissions, size, etc of that folder (line ending in "."), its enclosing folder (line ending in ".." — the Shared folder), and the file(s) contained in the SC Info folder (line ending in "SC Info.sidb").
The data in the first four columns is explained in Figure 2 of "Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X", though one also needs to read the earlier part of that document to understand what columns 1, 3, and 4 are about.
The rest of the columns are explained in the section entitled "The Long Format" of man (UNIX manual) page for the ls (list directory contents) command.
If you open the Macintosh HD > Users > Shared folder in Finder, you won't see SC Info folder because the "Invisible" file system attribute for that folder has been enabled in order to hide it.
If I execute the same ls command I provided to you earlier (ls -al /Users/Shared/SC\ Info/), I see:<pre>total 0
    drwxrwxrwx 3 drsmoke wheel 102 May 26 2004 .
    drwxrwxrwt 31 root wheel 1054 Mar 17 05:56 ..
-rw-rw-rw- 1 drsmoke wheel 0 May 26 2004 SC Info.sidb</pre>The zero (0) highlighted in red in my output indicates the file SC Info.sidb is zero bytes in size. This is because no content (songs, etc.) has been purchased from the iTMS on this computer. That file on your Mac has a non-zero size since you've purchased songs or other content from iTMS.
None of the Apple Developer documents address the specific purpose of the SC Info.sidb. In investigating this file, and comparing it with the same file on some other Macs, it was found that this file's size is non-zero if one has purchased content from iTMS and a little more digging led to the understanding that this contains descriptor keys, perhaps related to authorizing a Mac to play purchased music.
If you really want to get into the UNIX command line, check out the UNIX-related books I recommend in my "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ. Terminal is powerful and is especially useful in exploring the underpinnings of Mac OS X, accessing facilities that have yet to be exposed in the GUI (Graphical User Interface), as well as troubleshooting. One should study on it a bit since, if used incorrectly, certain Terminal commands can erase your hard drive or otherwise render one's system unusable.
I hope the info above explains this better.
    Good luck!

Best bet would be to go into Preferences > Audio Hardware, verify your input and output devices are correct, and probably switch your Master Clock to the opposite setting.  If that fails, we can continue troubleshooting.
I have the same problem as the author writes. But these actions do not help

Unfortunately I believe that requires purchasing the new version, and I do

  • Finder window does not refresh under yosemite

I have a weird effect on my rMBP with the latest Yosemite:
Very often (not always) when I save a file from an application an open Finder window to the save location does not refresh. The new file is not shown! I can go in with Terminal and everything is fine, the file is there. I can edit its contents (eg. with vi or pico) and I can rename the file. However the Finder still does not show it. Not even closing and re-opening the folder help. The only way I found is to create a new folder and immediately delete it. That forces the Finder to update the window. It looks as if the Finder does not get *some* update events.
I do have XtraFinder installed, but deinstalled it and even after a reboot nothing changed, Finder still does not refresh its display. I cannot tell exactly when this started, but incidentally I run an update some days ago and installed Server 4.0.3 and upates to the latest Pages/Keynote/Numbers (however I do not use those, I am still and will stay with iWork'09).
I use Server on a MBP with dynamic address because I needed virtual domains for local testing, nothing really "serverish". It just provides a nice GUI for easy setting-up of virtual domains.
Any ideas? What can I do?
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
