File Size Management

Say I scan an image as pdf, approx. 2.5 mb file size (36"x48" w/ lots of color at 150ppi). I then open in elements 4.0 add some text lines, arrows or other and try to save medium quality, with layers, as pdf and the file size gets very large very quick, like 70mb pretty easily and 1gb isnt unheard of. In addition to eating up our network servers memory, I sometimes get error messages like not enough memory (ram) to save and cant update my work session.
I know if i flatten the image (combine layers) or save without layers it will be smaller or as a jpg (lose layers) it will work. However i am looking for ways to retain the layer adjustment ability when I reopen the file.
Is this a problem with other users? Would an upgrade to CS2 or CS3 be better at managing these issues? ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT, THANKS

> Say I scan an image as pdf, approx. 2.5 mb file size...
Why PDF? I scanned a picture at 150 PPI, which resulted in a 2.5 MB file
size (BMP). When saved as PDF, the size went to 4.0 MB. After adding some
text and one adjustment layer, totaling three layers, I saved as PDF and
PSD. The new file sizes were 9 and 5.2 MB respectively.
Try going with PSD or TIFF format and see if that helps.

  • Database File Size Management

    Hello,
    I have an application that stores large records (capped at 1M each in size, but on average around 0.5 M), and can at any given time have hundreds of thousands of such records. We're using a BTree structure, and BDB has thus far acquitted itself rather well.
    One serious issue we are facing, however, is that the size of the database keeps growing. My expectation was that the database file would grow only on an as-needed basis, but would not grow if records have been deleted. Our application is transactional and replicated. We do have the txnNoSync flag set to true, and checkpoint every 60 seconds (this number is tunable). We have setReverseSplitOff set to true. Could this be the problem? Our page size is set to the maximum possible size, i.e., 65536 bytes.
    Thanks in advance,
    Prashanth

    Hi Prashanth,
    No, it has nothing to do with turning reverse splits off, the page size or anything else.
    It's just that Btree (and Hash) databases are grow-only. Although you free up space by deleting records within a Btree database that space will not be returned to the filesystem, but it's reused where possible. Here is more information on disk space considerations:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/ref/am_misc/diskspace.html
    Also, to add to the information there, you could call DB->compact():
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/api_c/db_compact.html
    or use the db_dump and db_load utilities to do the compaction offline (that is, stopping all writes on the database). Note that if you use your own Btree comparison function you must modify the source code for the utilities so that they'll be aware of the order imposed.
    Let me know if you need more information on this.

  • Huge File Sizes - Illustrator CS

    Lately my file sizes have been absolutely huge - all I was doing earlier was creating a simple poster using a jpeg picture (800kb) and two logos (about 800kb each) and the file size managed to reach 20mb when saved as a PDF! What am I doing wrong here? Is it the pictures I'm using or the illustrator file?
    Any ideas??

    A guy here had this problem with an Illy file that produced a huge pdf and we haven´t solved the problem yet. It was a simple A4 ad with very little text and one normal sized linked eps image in 300 dpi.
    The Illy file saved as a few KB. The linked picture was about 2 MB.
    We tried produced a pdf, both straight from Illy and also by distilling an eps of the ad. The eps was about 3 MB but the resulting pdf (with the image in 300 dpi) was around 9 MB whichever way we tried to do things.
    This struck us all as abnormal and we tried different methods on different machines but no-one can find what went wrong. We just send the 9 MB pdf to press and everything was o.k., but we still don't know why it was so big.
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Log file size in Sun Access Manager

    Does anyone have an idea about the how the Sun Access Manager's log file size will increase in size with respective to the actions performed?
    Can someone give a data regarding this? If someone has a better scenario and the supportive data w.r.t log file size it will be helpful.
    Thanks,

    I would like to take the log files backup daily (for future reference).
    I need to know the following:
    1) What log files need to be backup? Do I need to take all am*.* files (It will be around 3.5 GB in size)?
    2) Ideally, I believe that only few MB of data goes into these am*.* files but, I cannot store every day 3.5 + GB of logs
    3) I observed that these files (am*.* have every days activity added to them), So I would like to enable the Log rotation
    Please let me know how can I proceed.
    Thanks

  • Enterprise manager log file sizes

    Hi,
    I was wondering if there is a way of managing the size of the emdb.nohup file in Enterprise Manager. Looking at the documentation, it looks as though you can control the emoms trace and log file sizes, but I can't find anything about the nohup log.
    Ideally I would like to be able to purge the log file.
    Thanks very much!

    Hi again,
    I found the emdb.nohup file in my log directory at the location you noted. It is apparently created when I stopped and restarted my dbconsole (emctl start dbconsole) and is updated each time I make a connection to that database (for which you are connecting), and for every time the page refreshes.
    I think the name of the file using a suffix of nohup is probably intentional on Oracle's part to indicate that this is a log file that is 'active', but in reality, it is not a true nohup file as in the sense of using the unix nohup command. (at least that is what I'm thinking)
    Sorry I'm not knowledgeable enough on this to be sure of my theory, but that is what I basically theorize.
    According to man pages on nohup, it states nohup is "a utility immune to hangups".
    "nohup - run a command immune to hangups, with output to a non-tty"
    To answer your question, there is no problem purging or pruning this file.
    I just cleared it out by sending a date to the file which effectively clears it out except for a new entry in the file with the current date/timestamp.
    e.g., $ date > emdb.nohup
    Then, I reconnected to my OEM console for this database and it updated the file with new entries for the new connection. No problem....

  • First time user questions (managing library, file size defaults, cropping,)

    I'm on my first Mac, which I am enjoying and am also using iPhoto '08 for the first time which is a great tool. It has really increased my efficiency in editing a lot of photos at one time. However, the ease of use makes a couple custom things I want to do difficult. I'd appreciate any feedback;
    1) I often want to get at my files for upload or transfer to another machine. When I access Photos with my Finder I can only see "Iphoto Library" (or something like that) which does not show the individual files. Very annoying. I have found that i can browse to one of the menus and select "Open Library" and then I can see all the files.
    How can I make it default to this expanded setting? When I am uploading pictures via a web application, for instance, the file open tool does not usually give me the option to Open the library. By Default, I would like the library to always be expanded so I do not have to run iPhoto or select "open" to view the files.
    Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
    2) Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file? My camera will output 10MB files and after a simple straighten or crop, iPhoto will save them to 1MB files.
    Ignoring the debate on file size, is there a way to control the jpg compression so I can stay as close to what came out of the camera as possible?
    3) I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
    While I know this may be useful for some people, it is time consuming when going through hundreds of photos to constantly have to choose "5x7" from the drop down list. Is there a way to make this the default?
    I'm sure I'll have some more questions, but thus far, I've been real happy with iPhoto.
    4) The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it. I'm open to any tips on that one as well....
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    The format of the iPhoto library is this way because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
    Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
    What's above is what's on offer. Remember, iPhoto is NOT a file organiser, it's a photo organiser. If you want to organise files, then use a file organiser.
    Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file
    You don't. Though losing 9MB off a 10MB files is excessive. Where are you getting these file sizes.
    I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
    Straightening also involves cropping. Best to straighten first, then crop.
    The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it.
    If you use the hack detailed above be very careful, it's easy to corrupt the iPhoto Library, and making changes to the iPhoto Package File via the Finder or another app is the most popular way to go about it.

  • Does publishing as PDF increase file size? Is there a way to manage this?

    I am looking for any ways to reduce file size of presentations. We have to publish as PDF for single file purposes. I know you can change settings in Presenter publishing, but does publishing as PDF have any affect on file size and if so, are there ways to reduce file size?

    My Mac has 4 mail accounts coming into it, but you are correct, one of them is a POP account, (and unfortunately it is the main @ account, and is the one associated with my apple id, since we've had it for years).  I couldn't figure out how to replace this with the Imap version, short of deleting that account entirely.
    Is this what I have to do?
    Thanks for your help!

  • How to manage huge file size documents in SharePoint 2013?

    we have different kinds of files
    .avi, .wmv, mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .wav, .snd, .au,.mdb,
    .db,.bat, .exe, .dll,
    and .jar
    huge in file size.
    appreciated solutions for DMS. like sharepoint and file server or any other solutions.

    You have a hard limit of 2Gb which you cannot get around with Remote Blob Storage or anything else. Beyond that size, you're going to have to store content outside SharePoint with links to the content for your readers, of using Search Indexing on the file
    location.
    If the files are large but not greater than 2Gb they can be stored in SharePoint, but you should be aware of the supported limits for Content Database size, which I recall as 100Gb for a single Content DB, or up to 200Gb for a rarely updated Content DB containing
    a single site collection.

  • LMS 4.2 Syslog File Size and Management

    Hello All
    i have LMS 4.2 in Network with 100 devices, all of my devices have ACL so, there are too many logs in syslog
    after a while the size of the log files in /var/log files (boot.log, messages.log) going to have huge size, something about 20G for each one
    I'm looking for a way to reduce the size, is it possible to use Log Rotation or not??
    Best Regards
    John Mayer

    Ideall Logs are supposed to fill the syslog file sooner or later. Though logrot is amongst a best way to keep the Syslog file size in check.
    You can check the procedure for Logrot here :
    Configuring Log Files Rotation
    Additionally, there are some more Syslog Administrative Tasks which can keep your syslog in control. You can perform the following Administrative tasks:
    •Back up Syslog messages (see Setting the Syslog Backup Policy).
    •Purge Syslog messages (see Setting the Syslog Purge Policy).
    •Perform a Forced Purge (see Performing a Syslog Forced Purge).

  • Managing File Size

    I am currently trialing the Captivate product. I created a
    demonstration of @ 50 slides. 8-10 mins in duration. To my horror,
    the file size is over 100 MB's (and growing). Can you give me some
    suggestions as to what steps I can take to drastically reduce the
    size of this project?
    I recorded the screen size at 1280 X 768. I realize that's
    high quality, but is that enough to account for the collossal size
    of the file? I also have recordings on the majority of the slides,
    most between 15-30 seconds in length. No other media included in
    the project. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to our community, aveach
    Is this the file size of the .CP (project) file? Or is it the
    file size of your output?
    Note that often there is a vast difference between the two.
    (in case you were worried about distribution sizes)

    Looks like a red herring.

  • PDF File Size - any way to compress further?

    We have are using the Crystal for .NET export method to export a report to a .pdf file, and are having an issue with the pdf file size on a report that contains images.  The images are stored in a SQL2005 database as blob or varbinary(max).  The report executes a stored procedure that selects data (including images) to produce a quotation.  There are input parms to decide which images to print (for example A, B or both A&B). Both types of images can appear at the line level on the quotation. Type A images print in the main report, Type B images are in a subreport.  Both the main report & subreport execute a stored procedure to select an image type.
    Our issue, when both Type A and B image is selected to print on a 293 line quote.  The PDF file size is 44.23MB
    When Type A only is selected, the PDF file size is 2.64MB
    When Type B only is selected, the PFD file size is 43.95MB.
    There are more Type B images that would print at the line level than Type A, but is there any way to compress this down further as it is too large to email.

    You mention that you are using Crystal for .NET, but not what version; CR for .NET 2003, 2005, 2008. 2010?
    Applying the latest fixes for the correct version of CR would be the first thing to do.
    Next, I'd have a close look at image B as it appears to be the one adding the most "bulk". How is this image different from image A?
    General tips re. images:
    Save the files a BMPs.
    When .jpg image is inserted into Crystal Reports it is converted into bitmap format and as the result of the conversion the report may loose some quality, scale and other issues may arise... E.g.; Crystal Reports is not so good a graphics management tool
    When an image is saved as a .bmp, then there is no conversion required and thus the quality of the image should be preserved.
    Best practice: save the image with high resolution and required size as a .bmp format then insert this image into Crystal Reports.
    Resize the image to the smallest possible size and downgrade the DPI to 72. This will ensure your image is as small as possible and Crystal Reports will have to put in the least amount of work to display it.
    Have a look ar KB [1241630 - Exporting a Crystal report (XI) to PDF generates a big PDF file|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_bi/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes%7B6163636573733d36393736354636443646363436353344333933393338323636393736354637333631373036453646373436353733354636453735364436323635373233443330333033303331333233343331333633333330%7D.do]. This KB, may apply to your version of CR, or not. In any case, you will have to use the KB as a guide and determine what the appropriate registry entry would be for your version of CR.
    One more thing. Many people like to use jpg files as they are smaller than bmp files. However, as far as Crystal Reports is concerned, this is inconsequential. The report file will be the same size if a file is inserted as a jpg or a bmp. This is due to the jpg conversion to bmp Crystal Reports does internally.

  • How can I auto export a PDF File using the "Smallest File Size" preset and set the Exported File Name based on information from an Imported PDF?

    Greetings all,
    I am trying to create a script to automate a PDF export process for my company for inDesign. I’m fairly new to inDesign itself and have no previous experience with javascript, although I did take C++ in high school and have found it helpful in putting this code together.
    We have an inDesign template file and then use the Multi-page PDF importer script to import PDF files. We then have to export two version of each file that we import, then delete the imported file and all of the pages to reset the template. This has to be done for nearly 1000 pdf files each month and is quite tedious. I’m working on automating the process as much as possible. I’ve managed to piece together code that will cleanup the file much quicker and am now trying to automate the PDF exports themselves.
    The files are sent to us as “TRUGLY#####_Client” and need to be exported as “POP#####_Client_Date-Range_North/South.pdf”
    For example, TRUGLY12345_Client needs to be exported as POP12345_Client_Mar01-Mar31_North and POP12345_Client_Mar01-Mar31_South.
    There are two templates built into the template file for the north and south file that are toggled easily via layer visibility switches. I need to get a code that can ideally read the #s from the imported Trugly file as well as the Client and input those into variables to use when exporting. The date range is found in the same place in the top right of each pdf file. I am not sure if this can be read somehow or if it will have to be input manually. I can put North or South into the file name based on which template layer is visible.
    I am not sure how to go about doing this. I did find the following code for exporting to PDF with preset but it requires me to select a preset and then type the full file name. How can I set it to automatically use the “Smallest File Size” preset without prompting me to choose and then automatically input some or preferably all of the file name automatically? (If the entire filename is possible then I don’t even want a prompt to appear so it will be fully automated!)
    PDF Export Code (Originally from here: Simple PDF Export with Preset selection | IndiSnip [InDesign® Snippets]):
    var myPresets = app.pdfExportPresets.everyItem().name;
    myPresets.unshift("- Select Preset -");
    var myWin = new Window('dialog', 'PDF Export Presets');
    myWin.orientation = 'row';
    with(myWin){
        myWin.sText = add('statictext', undefined, 'Select PDF Export preset:');
        myWin.myPDFExport = add('dropdownlist',undefined,undefined,{items:myPresets});
        myWin.myPDFExport.selection = 0;
        myWin.btnOK = add('button', undefined, 'OK');
    myWin.center();
    var myWindow = myWin.show();
    if(myWindow == true && myWin.myPDFExport.selection.index != 0){
        var myPreset = app.pdfExportPresets.item(String(myWin.myPDFExport.selection));
        myFile = File(File.saveDialog("Save file with preset: " + myPreset.name,"PDF files: *.pdf"));
        if(myFile != null){
            app.activeDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, myFile, false, myPreset);
        }else{
            alert("No File selected");
    }else{
        alert("No PDF Preset selected");
    So far my code does the following:
    1) Runs the Multi-Page PDF Import Script
    2) Runs PDF Export Script Above
    3) Toggles the Template
    4) Runs #2 Again
    5) Deletes the imported PDF and all pages and toggles template again.
    It’s close and much better than the original process which was almost 100% manual but I’d like to remove the Preset prompt from the PDF script and have it automatically select the “Smallest File Size” preset. and then if there’s a way to have it auto-fill in the file name so no user input is required at all other than selecting each file to import. (If there’s a way to setup a batch action for the multi-import script that would be even better!)
    Thanks in advance and if there’s anything else I can provide that would help please let me know! Even a nudge in the right direction will be a big help!

    If you hold down the option key, it will typically show the location. Or you can often hit option-return on the file and it will reveal the file in the Finder, instead of opening it.
    Final option is to open it, and just option-click the filename in the toolbar of Preview and it should show you the location.
    It's probably an attachment to an email you've received. If you have Mail set to cache emails and their attachments it'll be stashed in a subdirectory of ~/Library/Mail. Which is fine.

  • Need to export Movie to Quicktime Movie w/ similar file size and quality.

    Let me preface in that I am not in the video editing profession. Many times I have exported my work to the professionals. I'm sure knowing what you're doing is half of the battle. Here is my dilemma. First, I'm using Quicktime pro just to add a text track to the movie. I  then save the file as what Quicktime pro calls Movie .mov. This looks good and has the quality of the original .mov and the small data size. However, no other player than quicktime will recognize the text track. I then tried exporting from Movie to quicktime movie format (still .mov, can anyone explain the difference of the two .mov types???), but I find that the image quality is poor. Yet, in the quicktime format other players (except windows media player) recognize the text track. By poor quality I mean that I think what I have is the blocking effect. I assume that this is due to the bitrate being to low. Again, I would like to keep the file size low and managable for data storage and downloading purposes. I was hoping that in the end all video players would be able to have no issues.
    My current file sized are all less than 1MB and are of good quality.
    Just adding a small test track the Movie .mov is still less than 1MB
    The size of the image is 512x512
    I should also say that I'm a PC user with a quicktime pro windows version. I'm sure that doesn't help me one bit!! However, I believe my issues are more with the fact that I'm not experienced in compressing files and knowing exactly the right settings.
    Here is what I've tried thus far. Movie to quicktime movie
    H264 codec
    Current for fps (Which is in the original is 8fps)
    Key frames automatic
    frame reordering checked
    I've tried Automatic data rate and setting the bit rate, even at 2000kbps (the quality is low). My original movie with the highest kbps is only 1151kbps and has no artifacts
    encoding Best quality multi-pass
    custom size 512x512
    deinterlace checked

    am i correct that this 'my photo stream' process is not removing any image data?
    Yes,  as long as you have iPhoto's iCloud preference pane configures as follows:
    You're be getting the full image file, pixel dimensions, etc. which is essentially a bit by bit copy of the photo on the Phone.
    When you add tags and other metadata and export the file out of iPhoto as a jpeg with the checkboxes selected to include that metadata there will be some image compression.  However, if one chooses High or even Medium JPEG Quality one will be hard pressed to detect any image degradation unless printing very, large prints or otherwise displaying the image at a very, large size.
    I ran a test on a 1.4 MB photo from my iPhone  and compared the original to two exports, one at High and the other at Medium JPEG Quality and got these results:
