File size problem between Acrobat 8 and 9

When I print to a PDF from Acrobat 8 I get a file size that is slightly larger than the original PDF file size.  Example a 1.6 mb file becomes a 1.7mb file.  When I print the same file in Acrobat 9 with the same settings (to my Knowledge) (setting = High Quality Print) I get a file that 36.1mb.
The reason we would print the file in the fist place is that we need to create a PDF that is ether slightly larger or slightly smaller (say 98%) of the original size.  Can anyone help us figure out why our upgraded version 9 would do this?  We also use 7 and between 7 and 8 there are no defenses but 9 makes the file ~21X the original file size.  Please see that attached JPEG for a screen shot of the file sizes.
Thank you, -Dan

Thank you for the quick response.  We are able to get some results through the Optimizer however they are not the same.  Also we would like to keep from adding an extra step into the process.  Especially a step that adds a lot of time to the process as the Optimizer does.  In versions 7 and 8 we did not have run the Optimizer (we also did not have to do this in version 5 back in the day).  Why would 9 have to add this step?  I am really looking for a way to keep the same workflow steps.  -Dan

  • File size deviation between Finder and Quicktime

    Today I encountered a weird phenomenon:
    Some Quicktime .movs show different filesizes in the finder (e.g. 69,3MB) than the same clip has in Quicktime (Command-I says 34,71MB)
    This happens if the clip was opened, truncated and saved (under the same name).
    It still occurs after the computer was restartet.
    Any idea what this may be?

    Hi
    According to the QuickTime help, after you delete parts of a movie, the file size stays the same until you choose File > Save As and select "Save as a self-contained movie". I'm only guessing, but this may be to enable the deletion to be undone, even after the file has been saved.
    I guess the Finder is reporting the raw file size, whereas QuickTime is reporting the size of the edited clip.

  • File sharing problem between XP and MAC when using Airport Extreme

    I recently got a Time Machine to replace my flaky Linksys Wireless N router and since I've done that I can't connect to my PC running Windows XP and was able to before. I have made sure my firewall settings are correct and have gone through many different settings on Time Machine but still no luck.
    I have my PC directly connected via ethernet to the Time Machine and my Mac is wireless. I'm able to ping the IP address of the Mac from my PC but can't ping in the opposite way.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!!

    btw the error is
    "Attempting to copy to the disk "Guy_s iPod" failed. The file name was invalid."
    and then it says
    "The iPod "Guy's iPod II" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to."

  • File size differences between Acrobat 5.0 and Acrobat 8.0

    We have a system where we incorporate .pdf files into word documents. When we use v8.0 the .pdf files suddenly become very much larger (e.g. the word document containing the v5.0 PDFs, around 29 of them, is 1,224kb but is 2,376kb when we use v8.0 PDFs). The .PDF's are created by printing to PDF995 and then using Acrobat to open them, select a section of the page, and copy/paste them into the Word document.
    Has anyone come across this before and, if so, how do we tune v8.0?

  • Font size problems between Motion and FCP

    I created a custom Final Cut Pro title in Motion. I set the font size to 110 pixels. My custom title works great, with one exception. The 110 pixel font in my custom title doesn't match the size of 110 pixel fonts in other titles. I double checked the font specs between the two titles, and they are identical. But, the font in my custom title is much bigger (view screen shot). How do I fix this?

    Hi Jim,
    I found the problem. When I right click a text template in FCP and select "open in Motion", the template dimensions are 1920p X 1080p. My original custom templates were 1280p X 720p. So, I didn't realize I was toggling between different template sizes.
    Thanks for you input though.

  • File path problems between mac and PC

    hi
    I'm having some issues with file paths, done a lot of searching online, here and on creative cow and no answers to be found (same question asked a few times though).
    I'm working on projects on a MAC and then collecting files (project only) to a watch folder on a PC for rendering.
    Most of the really big files (.R3D) are located locally on the PC but a few files are on a server.
    I can work on them fine on my Mac but when the project comes across to the PC it can find the files located on one of its drives (the same drive as the project source folder) but loses the filepath to the server and to the other internal drive as well.
    I have to open the project on the PC and repoint to the missing footage and then save which is a real pain in the #@$% and kind of defeats the purpose of the distributed rendering.
    how can I set absolute paths for the PCs from my MAC ????
    cheers../daniel

    Hey, sorry Mylenium, but this statement is not true. I was almost convinced to give up after reading this, but I managed to make a working conversion tool shortly after.
    This is the method in After Effects, I am pretty sure that it can work in the rest of the adobe suite as well.
    All you need to do to get the paths to update to windows format is to:
    1. Select "Save as xml" and save an .aepx.
    2. Open the .aepx in text edit.
    3. Perform a find for "/Volumes" and replace with "//<MountPointOnThePC>" (for example I have the drive as a network drive on the pc so I swap the <MountPointOnThePC> to the name of my mac as that is the path on the pc machine)
    4. Perform another find for "MacPOSIX" and replace with "Win"
    5. Save your file and you will be able to open in on a pc with all the files online.
    Disclaimer, I built this to work on my set up using a mac server and a pc render farm for after effects. Please back up your projects before opening them and editing them.
    Hope this helps anyone else trying to do the same.

  • Scan file size problems

    Before I discuss the problem with Preview and Image Capture I want to mention that I used to create my PDFs using "create PDF from scanner" in Adobe Acrobat and now it no longer detects my scanner (now that the HP drivers are included in OSX ... actually it used to, so I suppose that an update caused this problem). If anyone has a solution to fix this it would be great!
    The problem that I have with scanning using Preview and/or Image Capture is that the PDFs which are created are way too large in file size. Simple, black and white scans at 150dpi which would weigh about 30 - 40k when created in Acrobat Pro weigh over 300k when created in Preview and/or Image Capture. I tried using the Save-as "Reduce File Size" feature and the quality reduction was unacceptable.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Simple, black and white scans at 150dpi which would weigh about 30 - 40k when created in Acrobat Pro weigh over 300k when created in Preview and/or Image Capture.
    Not enough information. How big are these images on average? 8" x 10"? 5" x 7"? Letter size (8 1/2" x 11")?
    As a comparison, if I create a 3" x 5" grayscale image at 150 dpi, it comes out to 330 Kbytes as an uncompressed TIFF.
    Also, you're not actually creating a PDF from a scan. You're just embedding a raster image within a PDF file. Since your PDF workflow has been disrupted, you could save quite a bit of space by doing one of two things.
    1) Scan your images as a level 12 JPEG, which is the highest quality level. Experiment with the level setting to reduce the final image size. But if quality comes before size, I wouldn't use less than 10 as a quality level.
    2) If you don't want any loss of quality at all, then use TIFF with LZW compression. LZW is lossless.
    If you require your scans to be in PDF format, then what you were likely doing in Acrobat Pro was using the Images setting at JPEG with Maximum or High quality. Which, if you're using one of the presets, choices in that range would be Press Quality, or High Quality Print. That's the only way you're going to keep the size down without destroying the image.

  • 45 min long session of log file sync waits between 5000 and 20000 ms

    45 min long log file sync waits between 5000 and 20000 ms
    Encountering a rather unusual performance issue. Once every 4 hours I am seeing a 45 minute long log file sync wait event being reported using Spotlight on Oracle. For the first 30 minutes the event wait is for approx 5000 ms, followed by an increase to around 20000 ms for the next 15 min before rapidly dropping off and normal operation continues for the next 3 hours and 15 minutes before the cycle repeats itself. The issue appears to maintain it's schedule independently of restarting the database. Statspack reports do not show an increase in commits or executions or any new sql running during the time the issue is occuring. We have two production environments both running identicle applications with similar usage and we do not see the issue on the other system. I am leaning towards this being a hardware issue, but the 4 hour interval regardless of load on the database has me baffled. If it were a disk or controller cache issue one would expect to see the interval change with database load.
    I cycle my redo logs and archive them just fine with log file switches every 15-20 minutes. Even during this unusally long and high session of log file sync waits I can see that the redo log files are still switching and are being archived.
    The redo logs are on a RAID 10, we have 4 redo logs at 1 GB each.
    I've run statspack reports on hourly intervals around this event:
    Top 5 Wait Events
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wait % Total
    Event Waits Time (cs) Wt Time
    log file sync 756,729 2,538,034 88.47
    db file sequential read 208,851 153,276 5.34
    log file parallel write 636,648 129,981 4.53
    enqueue 810 21,423 .75
    log file sequential read 65,540 14,480 .50
    And here is a sample while not encountering the issue:
    Top 5 Wait Events
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wait % Total
    Event Waits Time (cs) Wt Time
    log file sync 953,037 195,513 53.43
    log file parallel write 875,783 83,119 22.72
    db file sequential read 221,815 63,944 17.48
    log file sequential read 98,310 18,848 5.15
    db file scattered read 67,584 2,427 .66
    Yes I know I am already tight on I/O for my redo even during normal operations yet, my redo and archiving works just fine for 3 hours and 15 minutes (11 to 15 log file switches). These normal switches result in a log file sync wait of about 5000 ms for about 45 seconds while the 1GB redo log is being written and then archived.
    I welcome any and all feedback.

    Lee,
    log_buffer = 1048576 we use a standard of 1 MB for our buffer cache, we've not altered the setting. It is my understanding that Oracle typically recommends that you not exceed 1MB for the log_buffer, stating that a larger buffer normally does not increase performance.
    I would agree that tuning the log_buffer parameter may be a place to consider; however, this issue last for ~45 minutes once every 4 hours regardless of database load. So for 3 hours and 15 minutes during both peak usage and low usage the buffer cache, redo log and archival processes run just fine.

    how to reduce a PDF file size under Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. The size is now 23MB; I need it to be less than 4MB. thanks

    I've found in Pdf's many time when you go to Optimize a PDF and look at the font list there are often up to a 1/2dozen copies of a given font, say Helvetica, then that many Helvetica Bold, or Arial or Ariel Italic
    What I do ie remove from list all but one copy of each different font. often dramatically reduces the size. also something lese is Flattening images will in some cases reduce a file size. I have run into a case where it actually made a PDF Larger.

  • How can I fix a problem between Firefox and my printer? When I try to print a window appears Save as ,then another saying Firefox not responding and printing does not work

    I used to be able to print correctly using Firefox as my browser,but something changed in the last month or so,possibly after a Firefox update. I`m not really sure how it happened but there seems to be a problem between Firefox and my printer. So I have been using Internet Explorer as my default so I can print. I would prefer to use Firefox again since that is where my bookmarks are. Is there a way to get the connection between Firefox and my printer back?

    '''Save as''' = sounds like you don't have your printer selected, or you have ''Print to file'' selected

    Start with troubleshooting for 3rd party plug ins section, then the rest of the article if needed:
    Start iTunes in Safe Mode
    Open iTunes in Safe Mode to isolate any interference from plug-ins or scripts not manufactured by Apple.
    Hold down Shift–Control while opening iTunes. You should see a dialog that says "iTunes is running in safe mode" before iTunes finishes starting up.
    Click Continue.
    See if the issue you're experiencing persists in Safe Mode.
    If you have the same issue while iTunes is in Safe Mode, proceed to the "Create a new user account" section. If you don't experience the same issue, follow these steps to remove third-party plug-ins.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

    Facebook apparently has their site coded poorly for tablets with touch screens. Try using the Facebook app. It is not perfect either but it is better than view in a browser lately.

  • Problems between PE4 and 10

    I have a drawing that was resized to a certain length using PE4. I have now upgraded to PE10 and when I print the drawing , it prints 3-4 times  larger than what it should be. When I view the drawing, the ruler at the top of the screen shows it being the correct length and when I checked the deminsion in the resize box, it also has the correct length. Have I done something wrong or should I delete the drawing and start over from scratch?

    Could you be a little more specific please? Sorry, I am not a tech guy just a poor laymen.
