File size reduction from hard drive to iPod via iTunes?

Is it possible to reduce file size when adding music to iPod via iTunes? For instance, if I have downloaded songs at 320kbps and have a file that takes up, say, 10MB on my hard drive can I reduce this in size when transferring to iTunes/iPod so as to increase available storage space on iPod?
Thanks.

Nope. iTunes only offers this option for the iPod shuffle.

  • Songs from External Hard Drive to iPod without iTunes

So I have only a quarter or so of my songs in my iTunes library, but I have a large enough iPod where all of my songs can easily fit on it. I want to upload new songs and albums to my iPod, but without deleting all the thousands of songs that are on it, but not on my iTunes library, if that makes sense at all.
Is there any possible way to do this? I was fiddling around with my smaller iPod to see if I dragged the folder onto the iPod whether that would work, but so far as I could tell it didn't.
Anyone have any suggestions? or Help? Or at least a definite answer that it just can't be done?

You can't add playable songs to an iPod except through iTunes. Dragging songs from Finder to the iPod simply adds the audio files as it would to an ordinary flash drive, it'll store them but not play them.

  • Lightroom 5.2 - files are missing from hard drive after Import

    I am using Lightroom 5.2, Windows 7.
I imported files into Lightroom from my hard drive and now those folders on my hard drive are empty and the photos are gone from Lightroom as well.
    Help!

Not sure if move or add was selected; what is the default?  I did do a preliminary search of my hard drive but interrupted it because it was taking so long.  I will let it finish searching.  I must have moved them.  They're not in the recycle bin.
There is a catalog for both Lightroom 4 and 5.  I upgraded the Lightroom 4 catalog but that didn't help.

  • Files not deleting from hard drive when I delete them from i-tunes......hel

I just upgraded to Vista and I reloaded my songs to i-tunes. I have many duplicates that I want to get rid of. I deleted and selected move to recycle bin but they are not being removed from my hard drive. Please can somebody let me know why.

iTunes will only remove (or ask) to remove) if the items are located in the iTunes music folder shown in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
If the items are in that location and it is not asking, then click on *Reset all dialog warnings:* in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
and selected move to recycle bin but they are not being removed from my hard drive. Please can somebody let me know why.
Likely it is a permissions issue with the iTunes folder. Mkae sure you have full Read/Write permissions to the iTunes folder and all contents.

  • Why am i unable to get music from hard drive to play through itunes?

my music is stored on my external hard drive. after doing the lastest update of itunes and putting my music on to a new hard drive. (was on a lacie, now is on the maxtor one touch II) i am now unable to access my music. i have set the advanced preferences to the music folder on the external hard drive and have hit consolidate library under the advanced tab in itunes. neither of these seem to work.
i have put the new library files into the music folder on my hard drive as well.
how can i get my music read by itunes?

To move your Music folder, use these instructions:
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder.
If you can restore the old situation, start from there.
The 'iTunes Music folder location' is not the folder where your music is, but the folder where your imported and added music is stored.
The 'iTunes Library' file contains the links to the individual songs.
Moving the songs, without 'telling' iTunes, looses the links.
You must not move the library files. They have to be on your startup disk.
More info about the library files here:
What are the iTunes library files?

  • Files NOT deleted from hard drive

iTunes will not send files to my recycle bin, only from remove them from my library. I have 2 computers with 7.0.2.16 running. One will ask me if I want to move files to my recycle bin, which it will then do. The other won't ask and won't delete them. I am unable to find any preferences item that would prohibit iTunes from deleting files, so what have I done to stop it and how do I change it?
Thanks in advance for your time.

At some point, I guess you accidentally clicked on the box for "Do not ask me again". At some point I'll figure out how to fix it with a script/program, but until then, the only fix is to close iTunes and then rename or delete your preferences file<pre>C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml</pre>
Unfortunately, you will lose all of the rest of your preferences too

  • Song deleted from hard drive but still on itunes?

I recently deleted a folder full of duplicate songs that were intended to be backups so I could save space. Now, itunes still lists those files but it puts little exclamation points next to the song to tell me the original file can't be found.
    Here is the exact message:
"The song 'x' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
No! I don't want it found! But how do I remove the ghost file from itunes so I don't have all those duplicates??

If you want to get rid of tracks with exclamation marks, you can do it by a crafty use of playlists:
Using a playlist to collect dead tracks.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks

In the photos tab in itunes, selecting Aperture to sync photos, the number of photos (in parentheses) for the various "albums" that are shown, is WRONG. Wrong by thousands (total). Also, None of my albums are shown by name, only various categories (last week, last month, 2007, landscapes, etc. etc.)

  • RE: File Size Reduction by Hiding Layers

I've come across the trick of hiding layers to reduce file size, however am wondering exactly what is happening.
    Here's my situation.
    20.6mb PSD
Hiding the layers reduces the file to 13.1mb
I've been told that the file reduction is because preview images are no longer being generated.
Could preview images really be accounting for nearly 40% of the file size?
To test this I saved this file as a JPG at 100% quality (not for web) and yielded a 1.34mb file.
This leaves me with roughly 6.6mb of file reduction unaccounted for.
Is something else being siltently compressed/compatibility settings not included/other info being excluded from the file when layers are hidden?
    NOTE:
I need to make sure my files have maximum compatibility for opening them in Lightroom and other programs that open PSDs like Painter - so compatibility settings are important.
I need to make sure that everything will still be setup properly for print and no compression is ocurring.
Could some please tell me what exactly is excluded from a file to lower the file size 40% when hiding layers?
    Thanks!

Similar, yes... but that still doesn't answer my question
    2400x1600px image
    only a background layer
    RGB 8bits/channel 72dpi
    19.2mb
    ...hide layer = 9.91mb
.. white layer on top = 10.1mb (similar results as you said)
    DIFFERENCE: 9.29mb
So, back to the question. Is it REALLY just the thumbnail/preview image taking up 50% of the file size in this case? Seriously? I would think that Adobe would be a bit more efficient with saving preview images. So...back to my earlier test to try and get a comparison of what a full size/full quality preview image would weigh, I've saved this image as:
high res JPG (not for web) = 1.55mb
    compressed (layered) PNG = 3.64mb
    compressed (layered) TIFF = 3.99mb
I also tried saving different combinations of layered/compressed versions of the PNG and TIFF files (although I think JPGs would be a more accurate representation of preview image file size). Uncompressed PNGs and TIFFs were far too large for the 9.29mb difference.
These don't even come within a couple of mb of the file size reduction from hiding the layers....
    So, my question:
If hiding a layer is reducing the file size by supposedely rendering less pixel data to the preview images, then
    - why don't any of these "mock" preview image situations come close to accounting for the size in reduction?
Even a layered lossless compressed TIFF still leaves an unexplained 5mb+  (9.29mb total file size reduction - 3.99mb TIFF)
I'm curious and need this for a specific (yet reocurring) situation at the workplace.
It really seems like there's something else that is happening when you save a file with layers hidden.
Is there any other possible scenarios (generating mutliple thumbnail sizes/sets, metadata based on pixel data, other information based on pixel data, silent compression, settings changing, etc) that could possibly explain this?

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

  • I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason.  At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups.  At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose.

  • How can i restore my backup from hard drive, it says files modified by OSX

    Hello
Before i update my mac i backup all my files to the external hard drive after i update it to OSX (10.9)i can not restore them, due to new update i had to change my hard drive thats how i lost all my files
please guid me how can i restore my files
    regards

Not familiar with the Mac file structure either but you can transfer the entire content of your Firefox profile replacing entire content of a firefox profile you created on new HD. For me copying over a few files was out of the question all of the files are updated and I wasn't about to reinstall 150+ extensions and set up configurations for everything and to do that for that 20 profiles and .ini file. Except for 3 most didn't have a lot of extensions but it would be rather impossible.
I copied everything from the Mozilla folder down in the user libraries so all my profiles were set, it did something similar for application libraries.
