File sizes different on iPhone compared to iTunes

Hi everyone,
After re-syncing my phone the file sizes compared to what was showing on the colored bar at the bottom of iPhone tab in iTunes is much different than the actual sizes of the files synced onto my phone. Basically I added all of the file sizes of my apps on my phone with a calculator and got 1.05gbs but highlighting the Apps section on the colored bar it shows 3.44gbs(see photo). My music adds up to 3.63gbs but shows 4.73gbs on the colored bar.
Now I can understand adding lyrics, album art & whatnot may change the music file size but I can't see how profiles, scores on games or whatever can add an additional 2.4gbs to my apps. Any idea on what's up with this?

I have found the iTunes "Memory Bar" to be an estimate and also not too sure it is always the same picture-in-time as the iPhone data.  Do you have (forgive the pun) and Apples to Apples comparison of each App you are counting?  I share an Apple ID and iTunes with my granddaughter and as such I don't actually keep all the Apps on my iPhone that show up in iTunes.

  • What is the actual file size for the iphone 4s update - 55.5 mb's or 832 mb's

Can someone tell me the actual file size of the new update for the iphone 4s On my iphone it is telling me it is 55.5 mbs but when I try to download the file thru i tunes it twlls me it is 830 odd mb's.
    Thanks, michael.

I suspect if you update wirelessly you are just downloading a "delta" updater whereas downloading through iTunes you are downloading the entire replacement firmware. Wirelessly updating does not take nearly as long for the download nor does it require completely erasing then restoring the device.

  • Time Capsule or OSX? File size differations....

So i have my music library on my 500GB time capsule.
i also have it backed up to two different 1TB harddrives (they all report the same amount of files and size)
each 1TB states there are 159.23GB space used by the Music folder with 184 Folders
the 500GB time capsule states: 93.68GB of space used with the same amount of folders.
I did an individual file size check of every folder on each drive using the optcmdI and they all reported the same size.
is there anyway to figure out why this stating differing file sizes?
    Time Capsule
    1TB drive

How are the 1 TB drives formatted?
Depending on the format and the size of the smallest allocation unit on the drive, a 1 byte file could take up 2 kbytes, 4 kbytes, or whatever. Therefore the amount of disk space used is going to vary depending on type of format used. If you want to really compare the files you would need to use the size of the file not the amount of disk space used by the file. If you notice when you check the size of an item in the Finder it states "xxxx bytes on disk (yyy bytes)". The "xxxx" is always the same as or bigger than the "yyy".

  • Encoded file sizes different on two Macs

We've just encoded a file to MPEG2 and the encoded file on Mac 1 is 1.58 GB and I've received it on Mac 2 via DropBox and the file is now 1.7 GB.
Can anybody explain why this is?

Does it play the same on both machines?
If so, don't worry about it. File sizes are reported differently based upon
    a. the hard drive sector size. Smaller sector sizes means less wasted space in less than full sectors.
    and/or
    b. how the OS reports MB. - iirc, OS. 10.6 uses 1000 kb to the MB - while 10.5 uses 1024.

  • Why is jpeg file size different in CS 5 and Photoshop CC?

If I open a jpeg file in both CS5 and Photoshop CC, and then "save" the files, the file from CC is much smaller than the file from CS5.
The size and compression ratios are the same, but the file size is different.  (It is about 1/2 the size).

Bridge does not compress any files whatsoever. Bridge is not an image editor, it's nothing but a browser that hands the files to their respective applications. Bridge does not "open" or "save" files, it can't compress them in any shape or form.
What you are seeing is the difference between the opened, uncompressed file in RAM and the space the file occupies on disk once
Photoshop has saved and compressed it.
The Bridge cache has nothing to do with any of this.

  • Software Update File Size Different than Apple Downloads File Size

    Background:
I am running software update and it retrieves the update for "MacBook, MacBook Pro Software update 1.1" File size is listed as 768K. When I go to the Apple Downloads page for this update, the file size is 979K.
Download ID is 16618 and URl is http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macbookmacbookprosoft wareupdate11.html
    Question:
Is this discrepancy normal based on the way that Software Update calculates file size or should I be concerned? There is no hash to confirm integrity of the file.

File size, and the volume of space it takes up are 2 different things. Space will very from computer to computer. Chances are, the larger the drive the more space it takes up. Reason? The file system (HSF + on macs with Leopard). The file sytem divides the drive into specific number of sections. That number may be 10 M, say. So, even if you have a thumbnail that is 4 kb, it will still require the minimum size of the file system. Make sense? There is a lot of wasted space on very large drives.
Note: Leopard is set up to use a new file system that apple may soon adopt. It will not use the division method HFS + uses, and so will save a lot of space, if adopted.

  • File size different in Bridge CS3 and Photoshop

I'm using PS CS3 and Bridge CS3 on a Macbook Pro. I have about 40 files that are about 50MB when opened in PS. In Bridge, under the thumbnails, the file size is pretty close to that, sometimes the exact amount, sometimes off by a couple/few MBs. I've been told this is due to some compression "on the disk" by Bridge. All the files are PSDs, by the way, and they are all flattened.
What I don't understand is why just a *few* files that are 50MB in PS are showing up MUCH smaller in Bridge; e.g., 36MB. If it's due to compression, why would Bridge compress just a few files so much?
I'm wondering if this has to do with the cached thumbnails, and maybe the thumbnails aren't showing the latest version (with accurate size) of the file. I don't know much about the cache, and I'm afraid to "purge the cache" without knowing anything about it. Also, if it has to do with preferences, I'm don't really know about that, either.

  • IMovie 11 file size differs from the size it becomes in iDVD

I've made a movie in iMovie 11, and the file size in the finder information window says that it is 667MB, but when I sent it to iDVD it was too big for a single dvd.  What are my options?  Really would rather not have to chop things out...

Just to clarify, and to add to zyfert's advice, the Best Performance encoding setting allows a duration up to one hour only, including themes and menus, for a single layer DVD. High Quality and Professional Quality give you up to 2 hours (as mentioned by Lennart). But to maintain optimum quality, it's probably best not to exceed your current project duration of 95 minutes (you may need an extra few minutes for menus).
I appreciate that all this can be inferred from Lennart's and zyfert's excellent advice, but just wanted to expand on it a little.

  • Database backup file size is too small compare to actual database size

    Hi All,
I know that backup file size can be smaller than actual DB size (i.e., MDF size + LDF size). But in my case i am observing huge difference.
My Database size is 16 GB out of which 10 GB consumed by MDF and 6 GB consumed by LDF. But when i took the backup, the backup file size is only 1 GB!!!!!
I am skeptical about whether i am doing anything wrong. Please advice me.

Olaf is right it must be compressed backup:
To check if the backup file is compressed or not
    RESTORE HEADERONLY FROM DISK = 'Path to backup file';
Looks for column labelled "Compressed". 1 = compressed, 0 = not compressed.
If you are skeptical about backup file you can verfiy whether a SQL database backup can be read and restored:
RESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM DISK = 'Path to backup file'
If the backup is valid, the SQL Server Database Engine returns:
The backup set on file 1 is valid

  • Different movie file sizes - different videos??

I downloaded the Flex 4 In a Week videos for offline viewing a few months ago.
Today I noticed that, in conjunction with an overhaul of the Flex In A Week web page, the movie files posted therein have changed in size.  They are several megs smaller than the corresponding videos I downloaded a few months ago.  Have the videos changed, or have they only been compressed more for faster download?
    Thanks

    Hi Gusetva,
All of the content for the videos are the same.  Looks like they just compressed the files.

  • File size different in LR than in "file info"

After cropping an image (36MB) and doing some adjustments and then saving as a standard JPEG - high quality - I go back into LR and the new image shows it's 10.2 MB. When I quit LR and do a "get file info" on the same file it tells me that the image is 1.2 MB's. What gives?

Based only on what is included above, I would guess that the 36MB file was in RAW format which you then converted to a JPEG. Would that be correct? Going from 36MB to 12MB just doing a conversion to JPEG is not all that unusual. If you set up your camera to record both a RAW and a JPEG image for the same photo, you would see this sort of radical size difference because the lossy compression algorithms used in the conversion to JPEG will often just throw out up to 2/3 of your image data. The typical dSLR will record data at 12-bit or 14-bit color and Lightroom internally stores a RAW image at 16-bit color depth. A JPEG uses only an 8-bit color depth so there goes most of your data. Another thing to check is what resolution you used when you did the conversion. By default, the conversion is set up for screen which uses a resolution of 72-ppi. Great for display on the typical monitor but not much else. You will want to use at least 240-ppi for printing and 300-ppi for anything else.
Finally, unless you are intending to either send the photos to a web server or print them, I would not recommend converting them to JPEG. There is a massive loss of image data that is incurred and then, each time you save the image, it is compressed again and even more image data is lost. After the third compression, your JPEG image is pretty much useless as the quality is so bad. I convert my RAW images to DNG (my personal preference) and they are archived that way. When I am ready to print an image or send it to a web site, I export the image as a JPEG and store it separately, outside of my catalog though I will create a new collection for the image(s) or add them to an existing one so I know the status of the image but I always maintain the original in a RAW format.

  • Print size different in LR compare to CS3

I have a Canon ip5000 which I use in Lightroom and CS3. When I go under Page Setup then Print Size, we doesn't get the same choices. Under LR, I get few choices ( 5 only) like 5x7, 4x6, letter, etc. In CS3, I get a lot more (10 or 12 choices), in particular the custom choice. Does anybody had ever notice that behavior ? Why is it different ?

I reinstalled all Canon software but the drivers are included in Vista. And there is no update. I checked DPP, LR and CS3. All three have different choices for print size. I'm confuse.

  • FILE SIZES DIFFERENT WHEN UPLOADING

I'm almost bald from pulling my hair out!!! I have exported photos to my harddrive as jpegs that are less than 1mb but when I try to upload them for an assignment on the school website they are 25 mb??

How are you uploading the files?   Could it be you’re uploading the original RAW or DNG files which could be 25MB?
Perhaps provide some screen-captures of the properties of the JPG where it says its 1MB and the properties of the uploaded photo that says 25MB, with enough of the surrounding screen context to make sense of the numbers.

  • IPhone 4 iPhoto file size

    Hi,
not sure whether someone also came across this problem, but it bugs me quite a lot after receiving my new iPhone 4 with 16 gigs.
I previously had a 3GS with 16 gigs and it could fit my whole iTunes music (approx. 1.200 files) and my whole iPhoto photos (approx. 7.000) on it, and I still had some 2,4 GB of storage space left.
That´s why I decided to go for the 16 gig iPhone 4, thinking that I still had enough space left for the near future.
Only that now the iPhone 4 won´t sync my iPhoto library, as it says there´s not enough space on the iPhone. As I understand it, iTunes doesn´t reduce the photos as much for the iPhone 4 as it did for the 3GS. On the 3GS the space used for photos was at 4,8 GB, the same library on the iPhone 4 wants to use up something like 13 GB.
Is there a way to reduce the file size for the iPhone 4? I searched for settings both in iTunes and in iPhoto, the only thing I could find is to do with SD videos, but nothing I found with regards to reducing photo file size.
I am quite angry actually, first of all I am stuck to the 16 GB iPhone 4 for 2 years now, as I bought it via a mobile operator, and second of all, while I appreciate the Retina display, I don´t need such a high resolution on a smartphone.
I can´t imagine I am the first person to run into this problem from upgrading from 3GS to 4, how do other people do this?

You're not the first person to run in to this problem. There are several posts about this exact problem that you could have found by searching before posting.
From the threads I have read there is not a way to reduce the file size of the pictures that are transferred. I don't know if reducing the resolution of the picture on your computer (which will result in a smaller file size) and then transferring would help or not.
You didn't mention how long you have had the phone but at least in the USA you can return or exchange the phone within the first 30 days after purchase. This would give you the option of getting a 32 GB iPhone 4 or going back to the phone you previously had.
I hope this post helps resolve your problem.

  • Does VLC change file sizes when adding files?

I have a 64GB iPad that had 32.1GB of free space. I copied over video files that Finder said took up 31.7GB of space. However, after all the files were done copying to the iPad, iTunes said that I had 11.7GB of free space on the iPad. How is this possible? All the videos did copy and all play, so I don't think anything got lost in the file transfer. Does VLC or iTunes downsize the videos somehow? If so, is there a way to not have it do that?

    @Julian Wright:
I don't think you read my post; there's no way that reporting 1000MB vs. 1024MB as 1GB would account for the difference between the video files taking up 31.7GB of space on my Mac but only 20GB of space on the iPad. Unless my math is very wrong, in which case, I would love to learn the correct way to figure this out. And besides, I was talking about OS X and iTunes reporting file sizes, not my iPad. Unless iTunes reports file sizes differently than OS X, which would be very confusing.
