File sizes displayed in Bytes?....

Since upgrading to Lion, when I try getting info on a folder/file, the size used on the disk or filesize is displayed in Bytes (with GB's in parantheses afterwards). This seems unintuitive to me and makes it a little less easily apparent what the filesize is. Is there any way to change this? I have looked around with no luck so far....
Thanks!

hmmm I don't think you are understanding what im saying.
Lets say I have a file that is 10GB. In most situations, I'd say its easier to say its a 10 gigabyte file than say its a 10000000000 byte file. If my friend asked me how big the file was, I would say "oh its 10 gigs" not "its 10000000000 bytes"
That's the point of having different units (bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, etc) it abbreviates it, and makes it a more managable number. Spedometers don't display your speed in inches/hour for a similar reason.
So back to the original question. I'd much rather see GB (or MB or whatever the largest unit is) BEFORE bytes as that is used FAR more often and easier to understand. Im pretty sure almost everyone would agree with that...
yes, I can still see the information I want, its just not as readily apparrent now and I'd rather see it before bytes. Am I the only one who thinks swapping the order of this information was kind of counter intuitive?

  • Any way to change file size display to NOT use GB or MB notation?

    I'd like to see exact byte counts for file sizes from time to time in the windows listing files (without having to Get Info). I've searched for options to change how file sizes are displayed by finder but have come up completely empty. Any chance this choice has not been completely co-opted from me by Apple's omnipotent designers?

    Welcome to Discussions.
    I believe there are 3rd-party applications that do it, such as [WhatSize|http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize] and perhaps also [Path Finder|http://www.cocoatech.com].

    I'm seeing some flakiness in the file sizes shown in the new Desktop Manager. I have a nominal 8GB card, which DM shows as 7.5GB. It shows 778MB Used, 5.6GB Music and 16384PB free (a petabyte is 10^6 gigabytes, so this is 16,385,000 terabytes).

    Finder often takes it time updating the file size. When the ZIP starts, it creates a small file, because it doesn't know how big the result will be. When it finishes, it closes the file with the correct size, but is neglecting the sending of a notification to the Finder, so the old file size is still displayed. When you do something that forces the finder to look at the file again, it corrects the display of the file size.
    (The large size is correct, because MPEG, MP#, JPEG, etc. files are already compressed, so cannot be compressed much more.)

  • Where is file size displayed in PSE?

    I recently took a Photoshop class (not PSE) and saw that the original file size and the current size (which grows with each edit) is always shown in the lower left corner. I like that. Does PSE do this as well? Thus far I have only seen the image resolution info, but not file size (as measured in MB).
    thanks.

    No, the file size (document sizes) shows the size of the file once it is
    saved. This is megabytes and using a psd for saving the file.
    It's just an estimate of the file size.
    The number on the left shows the size with all the layers flattened into one.
    The number on the right shows the size with all the layers intact.
    I guess these numbers are really just for reference, since the actual size once saved
    varies with the format used for saving.
    I think the max file size for elements in pixels is 30,000 x 30,000.
    A normal photo might be 3,000 x 2,000 pixels, so most people would
    hardy ever have a file of 30,000 x 30,000 pixels.

  • External Table - possible bug related to record size and total bytes in fil

    I have an External Table defined with fixed record size, using Oracle 10.2.0.2.0 on HP/UX. At 279 byte records (1 or more fields, doesn't seem to matter), it can read almost 5M bytes in the file (17,421 records to be exact). At 280 byte records, it can not, but blows up with "partial record at end of file" - which is nonsense. It can read up to 3744 records, just below 1,048,320 bytes (1M bytes). 1 record over that, it blows up.
    Now, If I add READSIZE and set it to 1.5M, then it works. I found this extends further, for instance 280 recsize with READSIZE 1.5M will work for a while but blows up on 39M bytes in the file (I didn't bother figuring exactly where it stops working in this case). Increasing READSIZE to 5M works again, for 78M bytes in file. But change the definition to have 560 byte records and it blows up. Decrease the file size to 39M bytes and it still won't work with 560 byte records.
    Anyone have any explanation for this behavior? The docs say READSIZE is the read buffer, but only mentions that it is important to the largest record that can be processed - mine are only 280/560 bytes. My table definition is practically taken right out of the example in the docs for fixed length records (change the fields, sizes, names and it is identical - all clauses the same).
    We are going to be using these external tables a lot, and need them to be reliable, so increasing READSIZE to the largest value I can doesn't make me comfortable, since I can't be sure in production how large an input file may become.
    Should I report this as a bug to Oracle, or am I missing something?
    Thanks,
    Bob

  • Display file size

  • File sizes in iTunes are still in Mebibytes not Megabytes

    The file sizes displayed in the "Size" column, and in the "Status Bar" at the bottom if more than one track is selected, are still showing Mebibytes, whereas the Finder displays file sizes in Megabytes ever since Snow Leopard was introduced in August, 2009.
    If you insist on display Mebibytes then you should use the correct abbreviation of "MiB" (not MB) after the size figure to save confusion.  Or you could follow Donald Knuth's proposal and use the MMB suffix.
    It would be more consistent to mimic the changes to Finder and correct this.   Otherwise users might get confused when the Finder tells them they have enough space on a Memory Stick or external disk drive to copy some selected track(s) but when they try to do so then the copy doesn't fit.  For instance, Finder says the destination has 21.0 MB available, iTunes says the selected track is 20.1 MB, and the copy fails because it is really 20.1 MiB which is actually 21.077 MB.
    The best way is to just alter iTunes to display true Megabytes (1,000,000 bytes).  If it was a good idea for Finder then it's a good idea for iTunes, even if it is 5 years late.

    Pete,
    As I am sure you know, it is quite common in all kinds of computing to refer to Mebibytes as Megabytes.  You are correct that this is not quite correct, but the difference is small and people are used to it.  The Finder point is interesting, but around 85% of iTunes installations run on Windows.
    However, you can make your suggestion known directly to Apple via the iTunes Feedback page:

  • Show file size coming from UCM

    I need to show the size of a file that comes from Oracle UCM and the file size should be shown in Kilobytes, the file size is in bytes so I've divided in 1024 for the number in kilobytes
    I have the following source code and the continuous result being shown in bytes.
    Please if you can give me your comments.
    thank you very much
    <c:set var="nodeArchivo" value="#{cmfn:getNodeById(cptutils.repository[node.propertyMap['BCCH_PUBLICACION_RD:ARCHIVO'].value.stringValue])}"/>
    <c:set var="fileKB" value="#{nodeArchivo.propertyMap['VaultFileSize'].value}" />

      <af:outputText id="archDown" styleClass="pesoArchivo" value="#{fileKBTransf}"/>

    Hi.
    You are mixing '$' and '#' expressions that are evaluated in different phases of the lifecycle.
    #{fileKBTransf} is evaluates before of the ${fileKB/1024}
    Take care when mixing JSTL and ADF and $ and # expressions .
    Anyway try to do it directly:
    <af:outputText id="archDown" styleClass="pesoArchivo" value="#{cmfn:getNodeById(cptutils.repository[node.propertyMap['BCCH_PUBLICACION_RD:ARCHIVO'].value.stringValue]) div 1024}"/>
    or
    <af:outputText id="archDown" styleClass="pesoArchivo" value="#{cmfn:getNodeById(cptutils.repository[node.propertyMap['BCCH_PUBLICACION_RD:ARCHIVO'].value.stringValue]) / 1024}"/>

    If you want to report this to Apple, send bug reports and enhancement requests via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • File size vs. storage size

    I'm confused about the size of my jpg. file. when i go to "image size" and open it, it shows up as 9.1 MB. When i go to "get info" it shows up as 2.8 MB . WHICH is it???? The jpg. is flattened, so this is not referring to a layered file. very confusing! thanks for any insight you can provide
    patti

    Patti:
    When opened in Photoshop (PS), file size is shown as the uncompressed file size of the PS image, including layers, layer masks, extra channels, etc. The "get info" file size is the size of the file as stored on disk, using JPG compression, ZIP compression for channels and masks, or even LZW compression for TIF files.
    These two sizes will always be different. In general, you should care more about the "get info" size, as that will fill up you hard drive. But the file size displayed in PS will affect PS's performance, so it is relative as well.

    Hi All,
    I have a similar time out problem, it ll be great if some one provide a solution.
    The problem I'm facing is becasue of the time out setting in the proxy server which is 1.5 mins. The app server is sending Response properly but after some 2 mins or so because the processing is a bit complicated (3 API calls done intermittently for different validations).
    I cant request for change in proxy server time out setting. So I have to handle this with in my application.
    It will be greatful if anyone helps us out of this.

    How to get the file size (in bytes) for all files in a directory?
    The following code does not work. isFile() does NOT recognize files as files but only as directories. Why?
    Furthermore the size is not retrieved correctly.
    How do I have to code it otherwise? Is there a way of not converting f-to-string-to-File again but iterate over all file objects instead?
