File Sizes re HD Capacity

How can I check on file sizes? The HD on my 80gb Macbook shows only 1006 mb free space. A month ago it had almost 50 GB free and I am trying to figure out where this bloat came from. Is there a way I can review the sizes of files without opening each folder individually?

Use a program such as WhatSize or Disk Inventory X to determine where the space is being used.

  • Syncing iPod with iTunes with greater file size than iPod capacity

    Hi,
My wife has a large iTunes library. It is composed of a large number of mpg files converted from CDs. Many of the songs she doesn't care to have on her iPod, they merely came with the CD.
The iTunes Library has grown so large that there are more songs than there is capacity for her iPod to hold. She likes using the auto sync feature. Is there a way for her to "mark" the songs she wants to sync and have iTunes keep, but ignore the songs she doesn't want on her iPod?
    Thank you,
    TPK
Is there a way for her to use the auto synchronization feature, yet still limit the tunes that are stored on the iPod?

Note that unchecking items will cause them to not be played in iTunes either — the preferred solution is to make a playlist for your iPod and sync only that playlist.

  • File Sizes and Capacity

Ive noticed low available space on my system how i do go through each folder to find ou thowmuch it contains?
like in windowsxp [i know its a diff os..but in comparison] how owuld i see the file sizes through out each folder ?
    thank you

an easier solution is to click that little gear icon at the top of the finder window (make sure you have nothing selected) the click "show view options" then check off "size" and "calculate all sizes" and make sure at the top that "all windows" is selected....that should do the trick

  • CLM - Maximum File Size for Contract Documents

We did a search but did not find an answer for this.  For the CLM system does anybody know SAP's recommendation on the maximum file size that the application can reliably handle for contract documents?  We recently increased the maximum file size from 10MB to 50MB to accommodate a larger than allowed file size.  Now the business has requested the capacity to add files (pdf files) up to 115MB.  Would increasing our file limit to approximately 150MB be within the recommended parameters?

There is no specific recommendation for maximum file sizes as this depends on how your time-out parameters are set, your server resources and network (also tunneling policies).  The fact is the higher the filesize the more risk you run in unreliable uploads.  Compressing files before uploading is a good practise for larger files.
These are the same issues which you would run into if you for example upload to a sharepoint site or even a copy on a shared drive, it all depends on the same parameters.
Tunneling policies could also affect your performance as it will limit the upload speeds according the priority set on certain network activities and if it limits your bandwidth you run in the risk of time-out so as you see there is no straight answer to your question.  I know customers who can without no problem upload 150Mb files and others who already have issues with 50Mb.
Unfortunate, as I do not know your architecture and infrastructure I can only advice to stresstest the conditions of 150 Mb uploades with several user ids and see if you get time-outs or if it degrades the network performance. One of the questions you should ask your business is how frequent are the occurences of 150Mb+ uploads and if it is the appropiate way.  It could be that these are very rare and in that case you could ask them to do this outside the busy hours of the network which will provides you less risk in problems.

  • Help me reduce VHD file size when deleting data in OS.

I use Hyper-V on Server 2008 64bit installation to create a CentOS 5.8 VPS has the capacity 100GB. After a period of use of disk space used up nearly all 100GB. I have deleted a VPS data in this section but I checked VHD file size not reduced.
The way you can help me do this? I thank

Well if it was a Dynamic VHD(x) to begin with, you have just expanded it out to its maximum.  In order to reduce its size, which is different that actually shrinking the partition and VHD(x) structure, here is what you can do.
If this was a Windows box I would have tell you to defrag inside the VM, shut it down and then use the tool from within Hyper-V Manager to Compact the VHD(x) file.
You could try the Compact against the your CentOS VM and see how much it does decrease the VHD(x) drive.
Without a good ext3 file reorg utility out there, you may not get down to the smallest possible size.  You could always backup the VHD(x) file and restore it to another VHD(x) and swap the drives out.  This laying down of the files from backup
would make them contiguous again and reduce your over all size of the VHD(x) file. That seems like a lot of work, but would meet your goal.  I would try the Compact option first with the VM off to see what gets reclaimed.

  • Question about Domain file size...

I have a dot Mac account, and my iDisk capacity is 1 Gb.
As I regularly back-up my Domain file from my G5 iMac to a FW external drive that sits on my desk, I have just noticed that the file size is now just over 1 Gb.
Can someone please explain to me why I still have almost 700Mb left on my iDisk, yet my Domain file size is over 1 Gb?? Obviously, there must be 'internal' files that aren't copied to the iDisk.
    Thanks,
    Rachel.

Wow, that's quite a discrepancy. 1gb Domain vs. 300mb site? Well suffice it to say that the Domain file contains all the information that is needed to generate your site. But it makes me curious too why you have such a large discrepancy. Do you have a lot of video on your site?
My site is only about 50-60mb and my Domain is roughly the same size. When I first started using iWeb, I used to poke around inside the Domain file quite a bit more than I do now. You can open up your Domain file by Control-clicking it and selecting "Show Package Contents." At one point early on when I was blithely dragging and dropping stuff into iWeb and publishing just for experimentation, I noticed that even after I deleted images or EVEN WHOLE PAGES, that sometimes the Domain file would still contain images and quicktime movies left over from the deleted pages. I didn't know what was going on and actually tried to delete the "old" items from the Domain file, but I ended up with a non-functional Domain file...lots of error messages saying it was missing this and that. So I started over completely with a new Domain file. I also noticed at the time that my Domain file was several megabytes larger than my site.
Since then, I have been very careful only to drag items to iWeb that will actually be used. The Domain-to-site size ratio has stayed pretty much 1:1. So I chalked up my earlier experience as a fluke. I don't know. Maybe there is an inconsistency somewhere. In fact, do a search here on "Domain file optimizing" or "Domain file bloat" and you may be able to find my questions about the issue. I never did get any responses, though.

  • Project file size

Is there an easy way to determine what your project file size is before you burn to video. I have 1 hour 15 mins of video which should write Ok to a 4.7Gb dvd but adding the audio seems to take the whole project over the dvd file size limit. is this correct? and how do I find out what the total file size is on completionY
    Thanks for any help.

In iMovie, select your project then click on Share > Export Movie.
At the end of each row of the varying sizes there is an i - information button.
Place your cursor over this to see the file size.
In iDVD, once you have loaded your project, click on Project > Project Info.
Here you will see the duration and file size and how it fits onto the disc in 'Capacity'.
I would advise you (in this window) to bump the Encoding up to 'Professional Quality'.
    Best,

  • "File size is too large"

When I imported the only 4 files in a particular folder (scans of photos) into the Organiser, the message "File size is too large" came up for two of them instead of preview images, although do appear to have been added to the Catalog as their MB size, pixel dimensions and creation date show in the Properies General tab.
I take it this must relate to pixel count and not the file size per se as the two tifs (13.2 and 13.3 MB but 1792 x 2508 and 2518 x 1798 pixels) are fine, while the two JPGs (12.9 and 30.8 MB and 9616 x 6480 and 7048 x 10376) are the ones without preview images?
I wasn't aware of this as a problem, so can anybody tell me please, have I just set too low a limit somewhere or is there a real restriction?
And is this new to PSE6 or something that's been around for a while?
    Thanks, Peter

    I have a 212mb psd file (a panorama).   I have Elements 6.0 and 4 meg RAM, Vista.
I went through the regedit process as outlined in Adobe Technote kb402760 and upped it to 1,000,000,000.  I would think that would have given enough headroom for my file size.  But it didn't.  I still have the generic "file size too large" on my thumbnails.
I did note that the tech note had a different location for the Software/Adobe/Elements 6.0/Organizer (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ ) from the location in my file structure.  In fact, this string was listed in at least three places OTHER THAN the one indicated in the Technote.  How likely is it that adding "MaxImageSize" to the Elements 6.0 register locations other than specifically indicated is the reason why the file size capacity was not increased.  Why doesn't Elements show up in the location indicated by the Tech Note?
NOTE FOR ADOBE:  Why isn't this a more easily accessible option in the user interface?  If I have a large file that slows things down a bit on my thumbnails, that could be my choice.  This artificial constraint built into the regedits that no one goes to is too much like parental controls for 5 year olds.

  • Request Advice for creating DVDs from 7.5 gig file sizes

    Hi,
    [using dvdstudio 3]
I’m looking for advice for home DVD project i'm working on. I want to create a DVD from video that has been captured to my computer using iMovieHD, and have completed my wanted edits for two clips. They are about an hour-plus each. When exporting the two clips separately (Sharing, in iMovie terms), the file sizes are about 7.5 Gig each at full quality, and I understand I’m going to have to cut some corners in the process to get both on one DVD and I’m even willing to have two DVDs, but still need to know the best way to decrease the file size for each one. The audio should remain as 16 bit 44.1 Khz, Stereo.
I’m wondering what the best method to achieve an optimum quality DVD is. Again, I realize I’ll have to compress the video at the loss of quality (i.e., “cut corners”) to make the DVDs.
In my previous experiences, I’ve retained the larger file size all the way up through the authoring process in DVD Studio letting it build a 7.5 gig dvd format (VIDEO_TS). Then, I used DVDx2One to compress it down to 4.5. The end result was pretty good and I never had any troubles per say. However, this project is important to me and I want to make the best quality I can. What would you do differently?
Here are my software tools that I use interchangeably for previous projects; copying, authoring, editing, etc:
-> iMovieHD 4x – used to capture the video.
-> DVD Studio 3 - to author and build my dvd session
-> ffmpegx - as a video conversion and compression tool
    -> DVDX2one to recompress DVD formatted (VIDEO_TS).
Thanks very much for your tips!
    JeffTronics

Hi Jeff - is the iMovie file in QT format?
If so, you need to compress it to MPEG2 - you don't need to suffer too much of a quality loss by doing so - how long (in minutes) is the video?
You should also encode the audio to AC3 - this will save loads of space as AC3 is about a tenth the size of a .aiff.
ffmpeg will create the MPEG for you, but so will DVDSP (as indeed will Quicktime). In your applications folder you should find 'A.Pack' which will handle the audio conversion as well.
The exact encoding parameters you use will depend on the nature of the footage that you have got - it's more than just squeezing it to fit - you need to account for fades, pans, zooms and fast action as well. Some parts can have a lower bitrate applied than others, and this is where a tool such as Compressor comes in handy. DVDSP will encode the footage as you work, or when you build if you want it to - this is also a reasonable option if you have nothing else available, or if you are new to the whole thing.
The best workflow is to go from iMovie to a compression tool to create your MPEG2 file. Take the associated .aiff file and encode to to Dolby Digital (AC3). Import both the MPEG2 and the AC3 file into DVDSP and you should be able to get the entire project to less than 4.37GB (the maximum capacity of a DVD-R).

  • File Size too lar

Forgive me if this question is elementary--I have an 8GB Zen Micro. I have about 600 songs on it and it's almost at half full capacity (I have no photos or anything else on there). Each song has been saved at about 3MB. am I supposed to be saving these at a smaller size? And if so, how do I convert the songs I have to that smaller size? I have an older Mp3 player with which I was able to save songs smaller, but can't figure out how to do it with the Zen software. Any advice? Or are my songs supposed to be this large? At this rate I'll send up with about 2000 songs I had hoped to get between 3000-4000 as implied...

That's already rather a small file size.
If you read the information usually listed under the asterisks (*), it says what format.
Could you please state what bitrate you are currently using, and I assume you're talking about MP3.
For the ~4000 tracks you have to make the files at a slightly low bitrate, in WMA (not MP3). I guess it states 3000-4000 @ WMA 64 kbps
You can use the Creative Media Converter (I think you get it with all Creative players)
Otherwise have a look around on the web for MP3 bitrate changers, or MP3 to WMA converters.
I wouldn't recommend going any lower than WMA 64kbits though, I personally have mine at MP3 92kbps (a majority), never lower than MP3 28kbps though.
Good luck and keep in mind, once you lowered bitrate, you can't go back up (without reading from CD or downloading again)!

  • Ridiculously Large File Sizes

I have an older 4th gen iPod and have not connected to iTunes in a while. Today it appears that my Disk space is completely full despite having 18.5 GB total space and only 1800 or so songs on the iPod now. I go into iTunes and view the file size column and almost every file is labeled 1,438,276.04 GB in size! I'm guessing most of these songs were originally encoded at 128 to 160 kbps so should be in the neighborhood of 3-6 MB per song. What is going on? FYI - I have up to date versions of iTunes and firmware.

I am having the same problem after moving my iTunes Music Folder to a network drive. I can not sync anything to my iPhone now because iTunes incorrectly interprets file sizes and every file exceeds the iPhone's capacity. For example, a MP3 that iTunes shows as having a size of 171,108,700 GB is actually 40.7 MB. I am using a Addonics NASU2 adapter that employs Samba, if that makes any difference. I did not have this problem when my iTunes Music Folder was on a hard drive connected via USB.

  • CREATIVE SUITE 5 WEB PREMIUM FILE SIZE SHOWING UP 936 GB

The file size of creative suite 5 web premium showing up 936GB in installed programes(windows 7). The actual size is below 4 GB. The capacity of my computer hard disk is just 250 GB only.  Iam not able to uninstall the software. Nothing happening when I click on "uninstall".  When I keep clicking on uninstall a pop up message says that "please wait while the current program is uninstalled or being changed" but this is just a pop up message. I waited over 3 hours but the unintallation is not processing at all.  Attempted to uninstall several times but same result. Tried to install the creative suite using the CD thinking that i get a notification that the software is already installed. But the installation CD is just initializing and stops after that. .
The Option " Save for Web devices" grayed out after I accidently removed the plug-in from PS CS5. I wanted to re-install the photoshop CS5, but the installation CD  stops working after the initialization.  Could someone guide me how to get rid of this issue?
    Thanks
    Uthan

Thanks for the reply. but how do I manually weed out the install entries in my registry? could you please guide me with the steps? This http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html is not working I am afraid. I understand that I need to uninstall the creative suite before I run CS cleaner. But as I explained in my first question, the uninstallation is not working at all. Even I could uninstall the software, I am afraid that I may get into trouble if installatin is not working. All I want is that my photoshop error " save for web devices " which was grayed out should work as normal. This error happened after I moved the plug-ins.
    Thanks

  • Downloaded artwork file sizes - can be HUGE!

    Just so you know....
Artwork files downloaded from the Apple site can be HUGE. For example, artwork for "Travis - The Invisible Band" is a JPEG of 1.35 megabytes despite being only a 600x600 pixel image. It's hard to discover just how big these files are - most people won't relaise! They are hidden in Music:iTunes:Artwork in a cryptically named set of folders. I got Disk Inventory X to help find the bigger ones, then used it's reveal in Finder option to view them by dragging onto Graphic Converter's icon.
Having lots of artwork of this size really chews into your hard disk. The average size seems to be around 400k. 4,000 mp3's might mean 1,000 images or about half a gig of disk space. These files will be attached to your mp3 files reducing available space on your iPod by about 10% for 128M mp3's.
The same 1.3M image file can be reduced to 160k in Graphic Converter at the same pixel size without meaningful visual degradation, and to only 40k at 300x300 pixels. An iPod that might lose up to 10% of its capacity with large artwork files would see almost no loss of capacity with more compact artwork.
I've figured out an applescript that will reduce the image file size to whatever I want (using Graphic Converter). It puts a smaller version as a jpg on the desktop. Unfortunately applescript can't insert jpg files into iTunes, it's only permitted to add them after conversion to PICT files. Who knows why! PICT files are much larger than jpg files, so I can't make the script nearly as useful as it should be - annoying indeed. If it was not for this, a script that automatically went through iTunes and shrunk large artwork would definitely be feasible.
Even more surprising, I found that if you drag a jpg image direct from Safari into iTunes, it does not go in as a jpg! Apple change it to a high-quality PNG in transit, and the file size goes up by a factor of 5 to 6 if the original jpg was well-compressed to start with. The only way to ensure that the original (compact) jpg file gets into iTunes is to drag it from Safari to the desktop, and then manually drag that jpg into iTunes.
Apple should perhaps have paid a little more attention to file size issues with artwork. Before providing such huge artwork files for download they might have provided options for size (300x300 vs 600x600) and quality (medium vs high). Also they should leave dragged jpg's alone.
This has spoiled my iTunes 7 experience somewhat. Otherwise it's great.
    Chris.

while Coverflow may be a delightful treat for the eyes,
i've contested since day-one that the artwork bloats
the song files to an unacceptable size... for me, anyway.
many months ago, i decided to endure the task of
deleting the song art from ALL my song files, and to
my absolute surprise, i got back hundreds of MBs
of space on my hard drive.
so now, obviously, whenever i purchase any new music,
the first thing i do after up/downloading is delete
the song art. it's all pretty, but i didn't buy an iPod to
    look at the song art.
    my two cents! cheers!

  • HUGE file sizes when editing with Photoshop CS5

Reluctantly I've set Photoshop CS5 up to process photographs for things like barrel distortion that my 18-200 Nikon seems especially prone to.
I open any given photograph with apple-shift-O, make my changes and save. However, the copy that's then put back into Aperture 3 the file size comes out as anything between 30mb and 70mb per photograph - far too big.
I've tried both TIFF 16-bit) and PNG (16-bit) options in Aperture which makes no difference. I've had a look through Photoshop CS5 options but can't see anything which looks correct.
    Thanks

    mjw_london wrote:
I can only assume that it's like this because Aperture 3 only basically allows 2 options, to open in an external editor with either TIFF or PSD - both of which are undesirable because of their huge filesizes. Is there a way of making it open in an external editor with JPEG?
Like jade said, it is not ridiculous. Ideally you would be shooting RAW not (lossy) JPEG to start, but even if you do shoot lossy JPEG you should convert to a lossless format like TIFF or PSD for the entire process of any editing. Large file sizes are a good thing not a bad thing because larger sizes represent more image data. And, hard drive capacity is cheap.
Note that JPEG is a lossy compression algorithm, so when you open a JPEG in Aperture, Photoshop, whatever, the file is decompressed and becomes larger. You can again compress the file (such as back to JPEG) when done editing but be aware that each new compression by a lossy algorithm like JPEG loses image data and may also add undesirable visible artifacts.
