File sort order

I've imported a number of old scanned family photos into Lightroom 2.7 running on Windows XP.  There is no metadata except the scan date, so I sort by file name.
The naming convention I use is yyyy-mm-dd.Scan.<unique number>.jpg.  If I don't know the precise date then I substitute 'x' for the unknown day, month, or year, so I have a lot of file names that start, for example, with 196x-xx-xx.Scan...  because I know the photo was taken in the 60's, but that's all I know.
The problem?  Lightroom sorts 198x-xx-xx before 1915-xx-xx.  I know it's a Lightroom sorting algorithm because I had the same problem with Windows Explorer and was able to fix it with a registry hack.
Is there any way to turn off this feature in Lightroom?

You're welcome.
Before removing any photos from LR, just be sure to save the metadata to file (Ctrl+S) so you won't loose any work. It sounds like you already have the catalog preference set to automatically write the xmp to your files, but that's not infallible. Better yet, you should explore the renaming tools within LR (hit F2 in the library) and use an outside utility only if necessary. Same goes for moving files & folders around.
You are correct about having a sensible file naming schema, but if you scan enough old stuff, you will eventually hit upon some exceptions, no matter the chosen scheme for file or folder names. To that end, I also include the dates, and comments about dates, in the IPTC Description (caption) of each photo. This field is fully searchable and is another way to keep track of everything. The IPTC Headline field can be useful as well.
Keywords are also metadata, they are stored within each tiff or jpg file with the rest of the metadata. Certainly make heavy use of KWs to identify people and unique, historical events or places. The IPTC County/State/City/Location fields should be used as much as well.
Ultimately, with enough metadata in the keyword & IPTC fields, you will be able to search, sort, manipulate, and present the images anyway you like, from any period of time, including those that are hard to categorize. Hence my comment about filenames being of lesser importance, over time, as you get more and more information into the archive.
Good luck - there is really no right or wrong way, and you will probably change course a couple of times and redo a few things to suit your needs. I've been working the old family history stuff for a number of years now, and it's endless!

  • Need help saving Bridge file sort order

Is there a way to save the sort order in Bridge CS4? The default in mine is "By Date Created", and I would prefer it defaulted to "By Filename". I change it to sort according to filename, but it just reverts back to date created next time I open the window. I'm sure this is a really obvious setting that I am missing, but cannot find it. Any help would be appreciated.

You can save the sort order as part of a workspace, Use the triangle at top
of the Bridge window (left to the search option) and in here choose new
    workspace.
Obvious you first have to set everything you like to appear as you want it
in this new workspace, including the sort order...
For better overview you can drag the vertical line next to the workspace
names to the left to extend them to the left.

Not a problem when using iPhoto on a Mac, which the transfer of photos is primarily based on - not manually managing photo storage as seems to be common with Windoze.
The same should be available with a supported photo management app on a PC.

  • Question about Finder file listing order when sorting by "Name"

I quite often add a suffix to some of my file names when I save them so that I can keep a complete history of changes. For example, I usually add "_000" at the end, and progress to "_001" through "_009". However after "_009" I don't increase the next digit to "_010" but instead, after "_009" comes "_00A" then "_00B" on to "_00Z" and then to "_010". I have been doing this for a while now (several years) and it has worked well for me.
I have noticed in the finder window, when in "List" view a file ending in "_00A" is listed lexicographically before a file ending in "009" instead of the other way around.
I think that this is due to my UNIX Locale being set to LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
    1. Is this a correct assumption?
I would like it to be listed in POSIX order.
    2. Is there a way I can make just specific folders list file names in POSIX order?
I was thinking of changing my Language to POSIX using the terminal command:
    $ export LANG=POSIX
but this may have undesirable effects with the rest of Mac OS X.
    3. Is there a finder preference (plist item) I can change so this just changes the listing order to POSIX? (I have no problem if all Finder windows use this sort order for file names.)
    Thank you in advance.
    Jeff Cameron

I don't know of a GUI way to change it or if you unix trick will work/do anything, but the Mac OS has always sorted that way, if I'm understanding you correctly. It looks at the entirety of the naming and puts 2 immediately after 1 instead of putting 10 there like Windows does (and Alpha comes before numeric).
I don't think the unix underpinnings changed sort order, but I may be remembering wrong. It's been a long time since OS 9. That's why I don't think the LANG switch will work.

    No not automatically.
You can p-lace them into an album and then choose Album Order from the dropdown menu and they will remain fixed.

  • IPhone photo album file name sort order

I have a folder with photos in it on my Mac.  When I sync the folder to my iPhone and view the photos on the phone, the photos are not displaying in file name sort order.  The file names of the photos are numbers (001, 002, 003 etc.).  It seems the photos are being displayed in date created order and not in the file name order.  The album with photos on my Mac is arranged / sorted by the name when syncing.
Is there a way to have the photos in the iPhone album displayed in file name sort order?
    Thanks,
    David

Focus Point (not free, no ads) will allow you to rename the files, add descriptions, and sort in a variety of ways. But it won't let you do anything in the main screen except browse your photo albums or camera roll, select one, and then you can do a search within that album or camera roll--and then if and only if the photo has a filename or description can you search for it. Bottom line: be sure to give your photos a proper file name and add a description.

  • Sort order in Java application (oc4j container) -- ear file deployment

I have a Java application deploy in Oracle OC4J container (EAR file).
In my Java application (jsp), I have a SQL statement who return data but the
sort order is wrong. The letters "é" and all characters with accents
appears at the end of the result.
I tried many things to change the sort order (NLS parameters in database

When I use SQL*plus on database server, that's working.
The sort order is wrong when I use the java application.
Somebody can tell me what and where is the NLS parameters to change ?
    Thanks
    Robin

    Robin,
I'm only guessing, but it could either be related to the java locale or the CHARSET attribute of the HTML header -- and nothing to do with the NLS parameters.
Maybe you should try the Globalization Support forum?

  • Sort order of files when opening a document within a program

When opening Explorer, files are correctly sorted in alphabetical order.
When opening a document (say within Word), if I search a folder then the files/folders are in a strange sort order - something like last used or modified. I don't know how this happened. I want them sorted alphabetically like in Explorer.
What do I need to do? I'm fed up of having to sort every folder each time I open it within a program.

    end tell
write texte to (theRapport as alias) starting at 1
navigate to the folder whose list seems curious.
You will get a file named "the characters.txt" on the desktop.

  • Pcmanfm sort order of files

Hello all, I have a question. Is there a way to change the default sort order of pcmanfm? Whenever I start it up, files will be shown sorted by type. I would like it to sort files by name instead.

I was also wondering about this annoyance and found this thread searching for a solution.
Experimenting now, it seems you actually don't have to edit the pcmanfm.conf manually. If you set the sort order you want, then go to Edit / Preferences / Close, then pcmanfm will save your current sort_type and sort_by as well even though they're not in the Preferences GUI interface. So that's an easy way to do it.

  • Sort order of alphanumeric file names in Finder

    File Name Sorting
I often using dates for file names - for letters and for photos in particular, with a format something like yymmdd, e.g., today's date, December 27, would be 071227. Occasionally I may use 20071227. If I have the year and month but do not have a specific date, the file name might look like 0712xx. The sort sequence of files in the various Finder views does not seem to be what I would expect, based on standard computer alphanumeric sorting rules. Here is what I am finding - three files beginning with file names 0708xx, 070212 and 070521 will appear in the Finder list as follows:
    0708xx
    070212
    070521
whereas I would expect the proper sort order to be:
    070212
    070521
    0708xx
If I change "xx" to "00" then the sort order is strictly numerical, i.e.,
    070212
    070521
    070800
No one can explain why the files sort per the first list above, if I use the "xx" convention for the date. Is there a Leopard bug, or is the sort order based on an algorithm I am unfamiliar with.

Tom's comprehensive article provides the answer but is perhaps a bit much for those looking for a simple, easy to remember rule. The brief one at File System Overview: Sorting Rules may be useful in this respect:
"Digit sub-strings are sorted by numeric value rather than as characters."
IOW, much like a human would naturally do, the Finder considers numeric expressions as potentially multi-character entities.
Except ... just like humans, it seems not to know what to do with leading zeros. Try this:
Create a new folder & add to it 4 sub-folders named as follows (all "0" characters are zeros):
    2
    2aa
    02
    02aa
Note that in list view, Leopard sorts them by name as follows:
    02
    2
    02aa
    2aa
But, try selecting them in order by hitting the tab key repeatedly, which should move you down the list one item after the other ... but doesn't.
