File System is corrupt or read only? What is going on?!

Hey guys, I'm a huuuge linux noobie.  I decided that I was going to try my hand at arch as a Thanksgiving Project.  I installed arch and everything went great!  I go GNOME installed, my drivers were working (internet was real slow, dont know why, if you have any ideas on that, let me know.  Its not my DNS servers either).  I have learned SO much about linux and the way that it works, but I'm having a huge problem right now.  When I rebooted, I got a disk check on /dev/sd3 and it fails at 90% every time.  It is telling me something about my superblock and that I can fix it with e2sck -b 8193  but that doesn't work, it says that there is no file located at the hard drive that i direct it to.  Ive tried playing with my fstab, but i don't really know what to do in it.  If you guys can help me, i would so appreciate it.
PS: I have arch installed on a 500gb SATA hd formatted in ext2.  I don't really know too much about linux please remember, however, I am willing to learn.  If you post something up, please explain it well.  Thank you!

XD thanks for the advice, I'm going to try that now.  And I'm acutally on a regular hard drive.  I just picked Ext2 because the last time i installed ubuntu thats the format it made it.  Ill try and get the exact error message and post it back up if that doesnt work.
EDIT:  The e2fsck didn't work, nor did the fsck.  But, here's the full error.
Checking Filesystem: [FAIL] (Always at 90%)
/DEV/SdA3
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 fileys (ndot a swap ufs or sthingele), Then the superblock is corrupt, and you might want to try running e2fsck with an alternative superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <Device>
Then underneath that, wrapped in a box made out of asterisks it says:
*FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED*
Please repair manually and reboot. NOt that the root filesystem is currently mounted read-only. To remount it read-write type: mount -n -o remount,rw /
When you exit the maintenance shell the system will reboot automatically.
I really don't want to go thorugh the ENTIRE process again... but if I have to, I guess I will.  Installation just took forever

  • Every file has staff and everyone "read only" privileges

Just upgraded to SL with a clean install. Copied over all my documents. Now it seems like every single file has staff and everyone read only privileges (in addition to me having read & write).
How can this be? Under System Preferences, Sharing, I have absolutely nothing checked.
Anyone know anything about this? Thanks.

these are standard permissions in both leopard and snow leopard. any new files you create in your home directory will have those permissions.

this has nothing to do with sharing.

I agree that VLC is also a good choice but MPlayerX is more user friendly.

    Hi
Error -49 opWrErr  File already open with write permission
Trash the preference files while application is NOT Running.
Easiest way to find out if this is the problem is by:
    • Create a new User-Account
    • Log out of Your old one and into this
    • Re-try iMovie
If it now works OK - then 99.9% the problem is iMovie pref. file that needs to be trashed.
    from Karsten Schlüter
Some users notice on exporting larger projects from within iMovie that this operation is aborted with an 'error -49'
This issue occurs only on MacOs machines using 10.7x
try switching-off the Local Mobile Backup
    in Terminal copy/paste
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
    Re-launch Mac

    Jim;
All images are visible on my camera.  I am using fairly new 32GB CF and SDHC cards.  I will see if my card reader makes a difference.  I was going over photos I took in 2012 that I have reviewed before and some of them now aren't readable now.
         Thanks for the suggestions.

  • My shared files are all set as read only. How do I sort this out?

I am trying to set up our iMac and MacBook so that they share files.
In System Preferences/Sharing I have set the File sharing to ON, I have selected which folders are to be shared and I have set it so that everyone can read and write the files.
In the iMac files when you check various properties NONE are set as read only, however, when the files are access from the MacBook they are all READ ONLY.
What am I doing wrong and how do I sort this out so that I can access files from either computer and amend and save them without having to change file names?
    Please help!!
    Karl

I have had similar problems and have given up trying to use the "everyone" user setting.  Instead, to give shared access to a folder I add specific users and then set their access level.  To add users to a folders sharing profile click on the [+] button at the bottom of the Users column.

  • All of my files in OSX Lion are read only, why?

I've just upgraded to a new Mac Mini which has OSX Lion, Version 10.7.3. I don't use the admin login for security reasons, I'm using a separate user login. When I want to modify a document (delete a document/folder or move a document into a folder) I have to type in the admin login every time. I've looked in the Get Info window of some, and the Sharing and Permissions all say Read Only.
Why are all my files Read Only? Is there a way to make everything in my login Read and Write without manually changing them all individually?

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Can we write files and leave them as read-only

    Hey Adobe AIR Community,
Another Adobe AIR question for you: Can we write files to the file system and leave them as read-only in  Adobe AIR?
In the future, we would overwrite these files (or delete them and  write a new one).
    Thanks,

Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The
work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do
    Press Win+"R" and input regedit
    Navigate to:

  • Illustrator files automatically changing permissions to read only

My Adobe illustrator file are changing to read only by themselves. This becomes annoying because i'll have to unlock the file, change my own permissions, and then try to re-save the file. Otherwise... I'm stuck with the "Error -54" code every time i open up a file and try to save it.

  • Error in saving a theme file as it is a read-only file

I work in a large, networked company with lots of workstation security.  I am not a local admin, and the software was installed for me by an admin.  I am trying to change a default in the recording setup, but I get this error everytime I try to change it.  Our tech support has gone through and made sure that the attributes in the whole Captivate directory are not read-only.  I still get the error message.  Ideas?  Thanks!

If you have an issue using the Captivate software that you think is an issue with the software itself you should post in the Captivate forum.

I recommend doublechecking the access status of the file(s) involved.

  • Error when opening XLSX file with Excel 2003 SP3, file does open but in read only mode with temporary name

I am using Excel 2003 SP3 and have the Office 2007 compatibility pack installed.  When I open Office 2007 formatted Excel files (XSLX) directly in Windows Explorer, I receive the following error if I do not have Excel already opened:
"Windows cannot find '<path to file>'.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.  To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
Even though I receive the error, the file does open; however, it opens in Read Only mode with a name such as "Xl0000024.xls".  The number seems to increment up each time it happens.
Now here is the strange part.  If I have Excel already open and try to open the file in Windows Explorer, the file opens fine in Modify mode with no error and with the correct file name.
I Googled the error I was getting and found KB211494.  It says I should uncheck the box in Options on the General tab that says "Ignore other applications", but this box is already unchecked in my case.  Any other ideas?  This is
really frustrating as a small percentage of our company has upgraded to Office 2007 with the rest still on Office 2003.

This may be a file association problem.  To solve that:
    In Windows 7:
    1. Right-click the file,
    2. Select "Open With"
    select [Your Program Here]
    3. Check always use this program.
    In Windows XP:
    1. Locate the file as you have described above
    2. Right click the file
    3. Select Open with from the pop-up menu
    4. Click Choose default program…
    5. Select Excel in the Recommended Programs box
    6. Check Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
    7. Click on OK.
    1.  Make Excel not available from Office 2007 listed under Programs and Features in Control Panel.
    2. Take a registry backup using the steps given here
    3. In the registry editor window expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and navigate to .xls right and delete it.
    4. Exit Registry Editor
    5. Undo Step 1 to make Excel available.
    6.  Restart the computer and verify it the issue is fixed.

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • UME as LDAP read only, what is the password

    Hi,
If the portal or java instance is setup as UME = LDAP read only + database pointing to AD and the user is then assgined roles/groups in the Java UME with access to allow logon.
    1. What is the password of the users to use?
    2. I know the AD password is definitly not synchronised as it is one way encrypted. Does the user needs to be set a new password in portal to login with?
    3. Will this password be stored on the Java UME only?
    4. what happens if the users AD password changes, will it affect the password stored in the Java UME?
    Thank you.
    John

    Hello John,
since we use that setting, too, lets see, what I can tell you. ^^
    1. What is the password of the users to use?
    > The password of their AD-account.
    2. I know the AD password is definitly not synchronised as it is one way encrypted. Does the user needs to be set a new password in portal to login with?
    > No, they can derectly use their AD-account (username and password).
    3. Will this password be stored on the Java UME only?
    > I'm not sure, but I'd say "no". I don't think it is stored in the UME (since the LDAP is connected and the information about the account and password status come from there).
    4. what happens if the users AD password changes, will it affect the password stored in the Java UME?
    > If the user changes his/her AD-password, that he/she can logon to the portal with that new password immediately. So I don't think, there is any connection to the portal UME database.
    Regards,
    Steffi.
