File Tranfer from First Generation (1998!) iMac

Hello all. I hope someone can help me with this conundrum. I'm trying to transfer all the files from the hard drive of the 1998 original first gen imac i had in college to my new powerbook. I really want some of those files before the computer leaves my hands.
I've already tried plugging in an external harddrive, but the computer wouldn't recognize it. I tried to install the software that came with the drive, but it didn't want to do that either.
Is there anyway that I can save these files to another place? Especially now that so much time has elapsed (9 years!) and the technology then as compared to now is so different.
Help?
Thanks,
Jason
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You should be able to run an Ethernet cable between the machines. Your new Mac should have auto-sensing so you can use a regular cable.
You will need to go into
-- Preferences > Sharing > Services and turn on Personal File Sharing.
-- Preferences > Sharing > Internet and turn on Share your local connection. ( This turns on the dhcp client. )
You will need you ip address
Preferences > network
copy down the ip address on built in ethernet. You may need to activate you internet connection for the ip address to appear.
On your iMac.
apple > control panels > tcp/ip
set you get info from dhcp
apple > network browser
click on the finger
and fill in your ip address
fill in your short username & password
double click on the disk name that appears in the network browser. Yes, you are running things from you old imac but you can copy what you want.
Robert
I have done this with the iMac Rev A running Mac OS 8.6.

  • Transfer content from first generation IPad to IPad Air

I am planning to move all of my content from my first generation IPad to the IPad Air. What is the best way to accomplish this given the older operating system on the first generation IPad.

After your updated your new iPad Mini to iOS 8.3 you have to put it back into setup mode to do the the restore from the iOS 8.3 iPad 3 backup.
To do this choose Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings on the Mini.

The +Migration Assistant+ app will help. But there's no easy way to combine accounts (the one already on her Mac and the one on your MacBook.)
Your best bet is probably to use +Migration Assistant+ to transfer the account from your MacBook, per [Using Migration Assistant|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Migrate.html].
Then manually copy what you can from one account to the other. See [Transferring files from one User Account to another|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Transfer.html] for some general guidelines.
Transferring apps is difficult, because you can either transfer all of them or none of them; you can't "pick and choose." If you have 3rd-party apps that she doesn't, your best bet is probably to reinstall them, rather than trying to migrate them.

  • File transfer from eMac to new iMac

I plan on transferring files from my eMac (10.4.11) to the new iMac with mountain Lion. Since the new Mac doesn't have a firewire port, here is my plan:
    1) buy a 400 to 800 firewire adapter cable
    2) buy a 800 firewire to thunderbolt cable
    3) daisychain them and run migration assistant with the eMac in target disk mode
    Will this work?

If your old iMac has Firewire, you can use the migration assistant that comes with the new iMac described in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
If your old iMac has no Firewire, networking the two machines has differing instructions depending on which operating system is installed on the old iMac. What's the newest operating system you have installed on the iMac G3, if this is the case?
Speaking of operating systems, the iMac G5 does not come with Mac OS 9 preinstalled. Nor is it able to boot into Mac OS 9. However, on its installation disks is a program to "restore" Mac OS 9 so that it can be used in Mac OS X's "Classic" environment. The Classic environment allows most Mac OS 9 applications to work, though many drivers that previously worked under Mac OS 9 may not work within the Classic environment for specific peripherals, and graphics drivers for specific games. If you were only using Mac OS 9 previously, you may want to keep around the iMac G3 for those Mac OS 9 applications that don't work in Classic. One of these three articles explains how to load the Mac OS 9 system folder from the iMac G5 disks:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42929

I'm not sure which one is appropriate.

  • HT3775 AVI files copied from PC to new iMac are not playing. Message is The document "Mural.avi" could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.  As far as I know I have the moist recent version of quicktime.  HELP!  Please.

I cannot get the AVI files to play on my iMac.  They were copied over from the PC and I can see them but when trying to open them I get the message "The document “Mural.avi” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available."  As far as I know I have the most recent version og Qucktime.

Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

  • Only migrate select files/apps from TM to new iMac?

I'm getting a new intel iMac in a few days and would prefer to just do a fresh startup with it and be able to pick and choose which files and applications I want to transfer to the new iMac from Time Machine. Is this possible? I've searched, but only found information about doing a complete migration from TM and nothing about only migrating certain things over.

I recently did just the same thing, but I simply migrated everything so I do not know if it's possible to pick and choose, however, it may well be.
On the other hand, you can always just migrate everything and then uninstall or delete what you don't need after the new Mac is up and running.
One caveat: Be sure to deauthorize iTunes on your old Mac before the switchover, and deactivate Adobe apps if you have them, then reauthorize and/reactivate from the new Mac.
I made sure all my apps and system were completely updated before migrating. Worked seamlessly.

  • Need help transferring Music Files & Playlist from Mac Book to iMAC

I am having difficulty transferring my music files and playlists from my Macbook to my iMAC. All of the music goes over well but the playlists, comments and ratings do not. Any assistance in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Copy the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder from your MacBook to your iMac.
The link posted by WoggleDog deals only with moving the iTunes music folder on one computer to a different location to use on that same computer.

Data and apps are stored separately.
For many apps, the data is in relatively-simple "flat" files, like most word-processing files, PDFs, etc.  Even those sometimes change internal formats from one version of OSX to the next, so a new version of the app may not work with older versions of the files.
Others are in folder structures, like Mail.  And sometimes those change, too, with similar results.
Now, I only need to figure out why Time Machine backups always seem to need more space than the total space needed for all of my files. Maybe then I could get Time Machine to work.
Time Machine doesn't keep just a single copy of the current contents of your Mac.  It keeps backups of files you've changed or deleted, too, so you can "go back in time" and see exactly what your Mac looked like at various times.  If a file is deleted or changed in error, or has somehow gotten corrupted, you have an excellent chance to recover one of those previous versions.
That, of course, takes more space.  It varies depending on how you use your Mac, and how long you want TM to be able to keep backups, but a "rule of thumb" is that TM needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up.
You might want to review Time Machine vs. Clones and Archives.

  • File sharing from 10.5.6 (iMac G4) to Windows computers

I recently upgraded to OS 10.5.6. Before that I was on 10.3.9 and I was able to see and access all computers on my cross-platform LAN (2 PCs and 2 Macs). My router shows that all computers are connected and has assigned IP addresses for each and I see and can access both PCs from my Mac BUT I cannot see either Mac from any Windows computer. File sharing is turned on in System Preferences.

I am going through the same thing. I got a support person who actually helped me with this. The issue is that the underlying way in which the Macs find each other has changed. The network code truly is incompatible. But you can cope, so long as you know the IP address within your LAN.
Go to the Finder and open the "Go" menu up there in the top menu bar. Select Connect to Server and type in the IP address of the machine you need to connect to.
In the Finder preferences, make sure that Computer is one of things that shows up in the left hand panel. Click it. On Computer, you'll find Network and clicking on that should now show the machine you just entered.
Notice that if the IP addresses happen to get shuffled around by the router, you'll have to set up the connection again.
At least, "it worked for me". I got access to my 10.3.9 machine from the 10.5.6 machine and can see all the files. (Can't yet figure out how to do remote printing to a non-network printer attached to the 10.3.9 machine though. It would probably be easier to walk upstairs...)
I tested this with Macs, not Windows. But I bet the same issue holds.
    Best of luck.

  • First Gen G5 iMac: Shuts Down In Just Seconds

My first generation G5 iMac shuts down within about 30 seconds to several minutes upon boot up. I had it off for about 3 or 4 days days while away, prior to this it worked fine. I purchased it in November of 2004.
    OS 10.4.8
I have it connected to an APC UPS, there was a lengthy power failure while I was away, but the iMac was off; it is connected to the UPS via USB cable, i've disconnected all unnecessary connections, opened up the iMac and blew dust out of it, but it still shuts down shortly after boot up.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    1.8 GHZ 20 G5 iMac (Rev A) 1GB RAM/250GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks all, and to Barry & MGW:
It looks as if my iMac is within the serial no. range of a recall for power supplies. My wife is taking the iMac to an Apple store today, she called Apple earlier this morning and got an appointment, also we have the AppleCare plan and are still covered. I will post again after the Apple Store visit with an update.
I use SuperDuper! It's a great program, unfortunately my last back-up is several weeks old (shame on me) and now the iMac won't stay on long enough to make a fresh backup.
Hopefully, a new power supply will fix things up and the HD will be untouched.

  • First Gen Intel iMac

I have a first generation intel iMac and the screen has vertical lines all over it and it is near impossible to see anything. I love this machine and it am not ready to totally replace it just yet. I purchased a cheap 20" monitor and connected it via the mini dvi to vga adapter and all works great.
Now on to the question. Is it possible to turn the display off on the actual iMac? I have the displays mirrored. The iMac display is just too distracting and I would like to turn it off and have the external monitor as the only one on. Is this possible?

Is it possible to turn the display off on the actual iMac?
    No
