File transfer between internal drives extremely slow

Since the upgrade to the latest Lion OSX 10.8.5 on my Mac Pro, file transfer between internal drives is extremely slow. I used Disk Ulitly to repair the drives but no use. What could be the cause? Thanks

Yes I have been transfering the same type of data in the same manner as before, this happened only recently. For example if I transfered lets say a 100MB single file from main HDD to 2nd internal HDD it would have taken around 10 seconds nwo it takes a minute or so. Also my iTunes library is located in the 2nd Drive and since this issue when I play music it keeps cutting off and coming back, I am sure this is due to the slow transfer speed of the drive. I can't figure out why it has gotten so slow, is it the drive or the OSX?

  • File transfer between macbook and other macs

I need to do a file transfer between my macbook and a macbook pro and my macbook and an ibook. What ways can you recommend? FTP is slow for me because it's a campus network, and bluetooth takes a while too (in the ranges of 1 to 2 hours). I believe it can be done through firewire and/or USB right?
If I were to use USb, is there any special software needed? Or will each mac detect each other as a hard drive or?
What about firewire? I understand it needs to have a hub or a server? Is that true? Can file transfers be done just via a firewire alone?
    Thanks!

If you want to access your friend's files, he should enable File Sharing on his machine and you should choose Finder > Go > Connect to Server... His machine should show up in the Connect to Server dialog box. This should work with ethernet; AFAIK USB will not work.
    From Mac Help:
"You can use an Ethernet cable to connect two Macintosh computers and share files or play network games.
    1. Connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of one computer to the Ethernet port on the other.
    2. Open Sharing preferences on both computers and turn on Personal File Sharing. Note the Computer Name for the computers.
    3. On one of the computers, choose Go > Connect To Server and then click Browse.
    4. Double-click the other computer in the window and enter your password, if necessary.
If you manually configured the TCP/IP settings for the built-in Ethernet configuration on the computer you are connecting to, you may need to enter that computer's TCP/IP address in the Connect To Server dialog.
To see or set the TCP/IP address, open Network preferences and choose your Ethernet port configuration from the Show pop-up menu (named Built-in Ethernet unless you gave it another name)."

  • [SOLVED]Simple file transfer between different os'es

    Hi
I'm searching for some kind of simple file transfer between different computers/os (mainly arch and windows) on local net, without I have to set up any samba/ftp server etc. It would be perfect if i could select a file I want to transfer and then be able to receive it on a different computer.
So far I've tried giver but I most of the times they can't find each other.
Any know how I could archive something like the a bow?
    Thanks

Try using simple file sharing through http server 'oneliner's.
    - Note your host IP (which I refer to by "ip.of.your.server"),
    - Go under your directory where you want to share files and fire a command line :
    Using python : python2 -m SimpleHTTPServer 8000
And you can access your files on the network using http://ip.of.your.server:8000/
    Using php : php -S localhost:8080 -t webrootpath/
Files under webrootpath/ will be accessible from http://ip.of.your.server:8888/
    Using mongoose : mongoose -r . -p 8888
Files will be accessible from http://ip.of.your.server:8888/
You may restrict access, ie.:  -l -0.0.0.0/0,+10.60.100.105
    And have access/error logging (à la apache) too : -a access_log.txt -e error_log.txt
NB.: You may install python or php under windows but mongoose is the easiest thing when it comes to windows -> linux.

  • The file transfer failed internal error

    Hi,
I've just transferred 10 MP3's to a Nokia 5800 and then when it came to the 11th file I got the message " The File Transfer Failed : Internal Error".
I originally thought that the Nokia had no more space so I deleted lots of files but the error still happens.
What's the problem here? Anyone any ideas?

The only files you can transfer are address book cards. I'm not positive that it will work for your phone but you could try. Download the program Bitpim. You will be able to transfer photos, ringtones, and other cool things from phone to computer and computer to phone. Let me know if you can get it to work.

  • Can no longer copy files between internal drives or from burned DVD's

This just started today as far as I can tell. We have 4 dual 2.7GHz G5's running 10.4.4. Two of them seem to work as normal. The other two won't let me drag/copy files from one of the internal drives to the desktop or the other internal.
We have two internal drives, the one with OSX on it that works fine as in I can copy/drag files to the other internal drive (labeled "AV") or to the desktop. The AV drive won't let me copy/drag any files to the desktop or the other internal, I get the circle with a line through it. Also when I burn a DVD I can't copy/drag the files anywhere on any drive. If I put a previously burned disk (burned prior to today) in I can copy it fine to any drive.
I have verified/repaired all disks, repaired permissions, and checked read&write permissions.
    Any help?

OK, I figured it out (I'll admit to being a Mac n00b). I was using DVD+R's. So the act of trying to copy files from a DVD+R (even though it was burned in the same G5) changes something in the drives so nothing on them will copy.
Ejecting the DVD+R and restarting without the disk in it got it back to normal. The problem was reproduced when I tried the DVD+R again (just to confirm the issue and solution). Again a restart fixed it.
Moral of the story, don't use DVD+R in Macs even though they can burn to them.
Anyway, if anything hope this post can help other n00bies.

  • IMac hard drive extremely slow (but not on BootCamp)

My iMac 20" from late 2006 has suddenly become extremely slow, meaning it read/writes from/to the harddisk at a very slow rate, down to 1 MBps according to Disk Speed Bench X. It's impossible to use the computer now and I haven't done anything special lately to make this happen, except downloading a lot of files lately that took a lot of space (down to 3 GB left on my 250 GB drive), until I deleted them again.
Interestingly, my BootCamp partition with XP Professional is working perfectly.
What is the solution? A new drive? I'm trying to restore it from Time Machine now, but it's taking forever... Oh, and I have used Onyx and repaired all rights, and Disk Tools reports that everything is in perfect order.

Ack - sorry. Doing two things at once and I missed that. Still, having gotten down to 2GB and now at 20GB, you may well have developed some fragmentation issues. First, run Disk Utility and make sure there's nothing that needs to be repaired. This might explain the slow down. If it passes, or if you successfully repair the drive, and the disk is still slow, consider defragging the drive. Ordinarily the Mac OS doesn't need it but when your drive becomes very full the Mac's built in defragging methodology doesn't work so well.

  • Firewire File Transfer Problem/  Dual Drive G4 to iMac

Bought a new iMac. My old G4 (OSX10.3.9) has two internal HDs (30Gb & 40GB <my startup>) but only 30Gb drive shows up in target mode. Can't mount 40 Gb drive on iMac desktop to do file transfer when G4 is in "Target" mode? Called Apple "help" and was told to connect FW cables with a "Powered FW hub". No luck! Only 30GB shows up (Disk 0) and 40Gb (Disk 1) doesn't mount! Any suggestions?

    Mike and Karn
Thank you both for your helpful and knowledgeable suggestions. Earlier this afternoon, I took my G4 to a local Mac store where the tech fixed the "problem" in 5 minutes for NO CHARGE. He just moved jumpers making the hard drive I wanted to use as a "target" now readable and the other as the slave. I have busily been transferring stuff to my new iMac.
Too bad the "Applecare" telephone "tech" which I waited well over an hour to speak with a few days ago did not the simple and correct answer but instead told me to by a "powered firewire hub"!!
    Thanks, Louie

  • File transfer between mac and windows 7

Is it possible to transfer files between my Mac and a windows 7 machine via bluetooth?
    MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.4
    Thanks

It will be slow, but there's no reason it shouldn't work as long as the Bluetooth hardware on both computers has the File Transfer Profile (all Macs do), and *Bluetooth Sharing* is checked in the Sharing system preferences pane on the Mac.
If the computers are close enough to send files via Bluetooth, you'd be much better off just networking them together. You can then "mount" the PC hard disk on the Mac like any other disk and move files around easily. It will be hundreds of times faster too.

  • Unusual File Transfer between SCCM Server & DCs

    Hello There,
Today i got an alert from my network team about huge data transfer between SCCM Server & DCs on the sites.
I wonder what does SCCM has to transfer / DC need to fetch from SCCM Server?
Right now i have blocked the DC IPs on the SCCM Server - Windows Firewall which stopped the flow but i am keen to find out what is going on.
    Any suggestions?

Assuming you verified there is no client installed on the DC, about the only other thing ConfigMgr itself would send data for is if a share on the DC were designated either as a package source location for driver packages or Software Updates, or if it
was set as the destination for the Backup Site Server maintenance task.  Beyond that, it may be something other than ConfigMgr responsible for the file transfer.

  • Log and Transfer ejecting internal drive

I am using Log and Transfer to import AVCHD data to FCP sessions. The AVCHD files are stored in folders in an internal data drive on my MacPro.
I shoot to an SDHC card, after each shoot the entire contents is copied to the internal data drive of the MacPro. Each session is placed in a separate folder.
When I Log and Transfer, and then 'eject volume' from the Log and Transfer window, the Internal Drive ejects from the MacPro. I must go into Disc Utility to Remount the drive.
Any thoughts as to why this has started to happen since upgrading to 10.6??

    Thanks for the quick response!
No, because the program seems to be stuck on loading the same content over and over. Even after I've ejected the drive and remounted it.
Where is the info stored for Log and Transfer? Is there a way to purge the cache?
FCP seems to view this one drive (the one that has about 800gb of AVCHD) as an SD card. When I bring content in from another internal drive that has AVCHD on it, there is no issue.
Unfortunately, 98% of our AVCHD content is on the drive in question, so I need to find a way to resolve it.
Are there any known issues with AVCHD and Snow Leopard?
    Thanks

  • File Transfer Between Mac Mini and Beige G3 OS 9?

I'd like to transfer files between a PPC Mac Mini with 10.4.x (Bluetooth and Airport) and a Beige G3 still running OS 9 which has USB and FW ports added.
I ccould use a USB stick and be happy, but on the Mini that makes my USB modem hang up. I'd rather not burn data CDs each time. My G3 will not run 10.x due to a video card or RAM from OWC.
So can any of the wireless USB sticks be made to work with OS 9? More obviously, is there a solution using any sort of wire or cable - I may be able to put them near one another at some point?
    Thank you.

You should be able to use Firewire to transfer between them I believe.

  • System drive full want to move files to another internal drive

my sysytem drive is almost full it is only 52gb I have another internal drive that to 100gb and I want to move everything to that drive. I kow that I can do this by making a disk image of the system disk. however I need a bootable cd, which I donot have. can i use another mechine to boot with and make the disk image that way? if so how?
    thanks

MDD G4s have room for four drives on two IDE buses (plus two optical bays). No reason to go through the disk image intermediate step that I can see though. Just use Disk Utility -> Restore to move or clone everything over. Or you can do same with CCC, or SuperDuper. Lots of ways.
No need for bootable CD (and CD is rather small) and while BootCD worked with Panther, no version is out for Tiger.
You can just boot from your Tiger DVD and use Disk Utility from there.
When copying between drives, it is a lot faster to copy from/to different IDE buses. If your OEM boot drive is in the ATA/100 cage on the right (in front of cpus) then copy to the ATA/66 bus on the left. You might want to zero the drive or test your 100GB (odd number, that, I have seen 80 and 120, but 100GB?).
If you don't have OS X CD/DVD, then I would suggest buying a retail 10.4.6 DVD now.

  • How to move a file from one internal drive to another

I have a Mac Pro with 10.6. My main drive is a 240 GB SSD. I would like to move files from it to another internal drive to free up space on the SSD. The only way I can figure out to do it is to copy a file to the other internal drive and then move it from the SSD to the trash and empty the trash. Is there a better way? TIA.

That's the way I would do it.

  • USB 3.0 external drive extremely slow on Macbook Air 2014

Dear Apple Support Team & Folks in Apple Community,
Seriously, I have a problem with my new Macbook Air 2014 which has equipped with USB 3.0 port. I read through the forum and hardly find a solution for this.
Recently, I plugged in my USB 3.0 external drive and expect that it would reach the same file transfer speed as that on my PC. Instead of 625 MB/s (5 Gbit/s), it was hardly reaching 60 MB/s (480 Mbit/s) to my surprise! Sounds like Macbook Air doesn't recognize USB 3.0 device properly. I have tried Western Digital and Seagate devices but failed to get reasonable transfer speed on my Macbook Air.
I tried it again with my USB 2.0 external drive on Macbook Air and only got the transfer speed around 15 - 20 MB/s which is disappointing.
Any patches or Firmware updates would be appreciate!
I have OS X 10.9.3 already with EFI and SMC update patched by App Store.

I would be interested to know which consumer grade non-raid external harddisk that could reach 6xx mb/sec.
The speed you mentioned should be normal, since most of these are 5400rpm drives (asumming it is 2.5 inch).

    Hey all,
I have a Powerbook G4 running Panther and a Macbook Pro running Leopard, both behind DSL routers. I need to connect to the PB G4 to retrieve some files from it. Does anyone have a solution? I need to be able to select the file which I need to retrieve. So something like a remote desktop connection, ftp or vnc would be best. Oh, they are in different countries too
