File Transfer to iMac Tiger (10.4.11) from XP Computer

The problem is connected to sending a file from my xp computer to my imac os 10.4 (tiger) computer over my home wireless network.
When the file arrives on my imac desktop, it shows up as an icon with a small globe in it (the same as the "network" symbol).  I can open this file and read its contents, but only so long as the xp computer remains connected to the network. When the xp computer is turned off, the icon (and its contents) disappears on the imac.
How do I store the contents of the transferred file in a permanent folder on the imac such that the information does not disappear when the source of the information (the xp computer) is turned off?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks to those who replied to my query.
I found that the easiest thing to do is to is, on the keyboard,  simply hold down the Options key and then drag the small network icon to another place on the desktop. This then creates a folder on the desktop; the folder contains all the files that were transferred from the xp computer. The small network icon (the one that disappears when the xp computer is turned off) can then be ejected from the iMac desktop and the new folder remains in place and does not disappear when the xp computer is turned off.
Now, if only I could figure out how to get the xp computer to recognize that the iMac is on the network so that I can transfer files from the iMac to the xp computer, I would be a happy guy.
Again, thanks for your responses to my origional query.

  • File transfer between IMAC and Motorola RAZR V3c

    I recently replaced my defective Verizon RAZR phone with a new RAZR v3c. Previously, I was able to exchange music, video and pic files readily by dragging and dropping via bluetooth. The new phone pairs up w/ bluetooth but an error message appears stating the device "does not have the necessary services". Is there a way to transfer these files even w/o bluetooth if necessary? I've been reading for hours and haven't found a solution. Please HELP!! Thanks

    Bad news... Verizon disabled that "feature" of your phone. I guess they did it to try to force subscribers to buy more ringtones and use more data transfers. It might depend on the exact firmware version. There's some info on it here:
    http://blog.wired.com/music/2006/07/verizonrazrca.html
    And a (somewhat daunting) wiki tutorial on how to replace the Verizon $oftware with the original phone software from Alltel:

    Oh wait, just found this... apparently you can take it to a Verizon store and have them update the firmware:

  • File transfer between iMac G3 and iMac with iSight

    I recently ordered the new 20" iMac w/iSight to replace my geriatric iMac G3 333Mhz, and I wanted to know how to network the two so I can transfer files to the new machine. The iMac G3 is running OS 9.2.2, and is already networked to a Win98SE PC for DSL purposes (I have a router). I have zero experience with OSX (I'm way old school), so please be gentle.
    While I'm at it, can anyone recommend any sites or books for an OSX newbie, that are good for an old hand Machead? I've been looking at the Apple stuff but it's not enough, and everything else I see is for M$ switchers and talks in Windoze terms which are useless to me...
    TIA

    Connect your new iMac via Ethernet to your current network.
    Then you can use the information in KB 106461, Mac OS X: About File Sharing.

    Importing your music folder will add in the tracks, but your playlists all live in the original .itl file. Not quite sure why any playlists were imported at all, though if you have exported m3u files then they could have been added in when you added the folder. iTunes records absoulte paths in these lists and ignores any file it can't find.
    The stuff in the Temp folder can be thrown away once everything is working. Just safer than deleting in case you wanted/needed to reverse any actions.
    At step 6 you should have had your original library complete with ratings, playlists, date added values etc., so I'm not quite sure where things have gone wrong.
    When you moved everything up one level did that include an iTunes Library.itl file? Another way of asking the same question is when you got to step 6 did you have a completely blank library with the prompts to add music.
    Perhaps the .itl file was corrupt. The .tmp files indicate something may have gone wrong at some point. What are the sizes/dates of the files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder? The most recently dated of these, providing it is at least of a comparable size to its predecessors) may well be a better starting point. You can rename the current itl as iTunes Library (Temp).itl, copy the the older file up to the iTunes folder and rename it as iTunes Library.itl.
    Use iTunes Folder Watch to update the library with tracks that have been added or removed since the backup file was created.

  • I need to import local Thunderbird files whose accounts have expired since I migrated from another computer. Help, how do I recover these emails?

    I have to read emails from 2 or 3 years ago, which were held in Thunderbird, until the machine broke down. I have the data backed up, but I can't get it recognised by new Thunderbird. I can see every message encrypted in the folders. However because the account was closed by someone else, no email migration product or method will work with my local folder messages, because there is no account to authenticate.
    Please provide me with a simple email view that will allow me to passively browse and read these emails, so that I can copy relevant ones to my active email account and forward to the person who needs them.

    There is an add-on to TB which allows import and export of emails in various formats to/from a separate storage medium (external disk, thumb drive, etc.). You should be able to use that to import your backup file(s).

  • How do you transfer Adobe Acrobat XI Pro Student version from old computer to new computer?

    i just got a new computer and got my Adobe Acrobat XI Pro Student and Teacher Edition installed from my old computer; however on my new computer, it's only showing up as Adobe Reader and not the Acrobat XI Pro version. I've only had it for less than 3 months and it is NOT a trial version. It is fully paid for. Please help. Thanks!

  • I had my computer fixed and know I cannot update on it as it was before I had it fixed. The guy said he saved this file for me but I cannot retrieve it from the computer. What can I do? I have lost all my music, not my photo's but the list I had itunes.

    I had my pc computer reepaired and the guy saved my iphone information on it. However, I cannot fiind it. The operating system is windows 7, there are two folders that should have this information on them but I cannot find it anywhere. I lost my library of music for my iphone after I updated it this new software from apple. Can I get my list or have I truley lost it completely? If anyone has an anwer to this question, please free to explain it to me. I am pretty good about how to find this stuff, but this time I am clueless.

    Your music will be where you put it.
    It has always been very basic to always maintain a abckup copy of your computer.
    If you have failed to do this then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries.

  • USB 3.0 file transfer is intermittent

    Hello!
    I Have a Pavilion dv6 7090el over which I installed Windows 8 64bit (there was 7 as I bought it).
    Since a couple of months I have an external HD: it's an Buffalo HD-LBU3 with usb 3.
    When I plug it to the USB 2 port it works fine, bot if I try transfering files onto it from my notebook connecting it with the external HD through USB 3.0 it goes intermittently. It  copies for a while, then it stops and transfer speed drops to 0 for some time, then it goes on again, it transfers a bit and stops, and so on, like this:
    And at the end of the day copy is slower than with usb 2.
    This happens with all 3 USB 3.0 ports of the laptop. If I plug a USB 2.0 device to them, file transfer works fine (obviously not at usb 3.0 speed, but at least it's not intermittent).
    Bios and all the drivers are up to date (according to HP support assistant).
    In the same conditions, with linux mint 14, file transfer works fine, faster than 60MB/s from the start to the end without "resting".
    Could you help me solving this issue?
    Thank you!
    David

    Hi,
    You may need to update the USB 3.0 driver for your notebook. Use the device manager to see what the manufacturer is and post the PCI\VEN information. Once you do that perhaps we can find an updated Windows 8 driver.  It is interesting that I do not see it available for Windows 7 either. Have you updated your chipset drivers by use of the driver available on the HP web support portal? If the USB 3.0 port is part of the Intel chipset then that may be where the issue is.
    You may also need to consider upgading the firmware for your Buffalo external drive that is found on its support web document.

  • How to set the file transfer mode to binary

    Hi,
    I have a requirement to upload files from local machine to server, and it is working fine.
    But after uploading files junk characters are entered after each line, so want to set the file transfer mode to binary to get rid from this error.
    We have checked that if we ftp the files manually then also getting the same problem when the transfer mode is not selected as binary.
    Please give your valuable advice.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    I want to set the file transfer mode through controller code, presently I am using the below code where no file transfer mode is specified ::
    public void upLoadFile(OAPageContext pageContext,OAWebBean webBean)
      String serverPath = null;
      OAApplicationModuleImpl am = (OAApplicationModuleImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);

          PreparedStatement stmt = conn.prepareStatement(query);
           for (ResultSet resultset = stmt.executeQuery();
                          resultset.next(); )
                 serverPath  = resultset.getString("value");
            stmt.close();
           catch(Exception ex)
             throw new OAException(ex.getMessage(), OAException.ERROR);
       String filePath = serverPath+"/"+pageContext.getParameter("FileType");
       //System.out.println("Default File Path---->"+filePath);
       String fileUrl = null;
       try
        DataObject fileUploadData =  pageContext.getNamedDataObject("MessageFileUpload");
      //FileUploading is my MessageFileUpload Bean Id
        if(fileUploadData!=null)
         String uFileName = (String)fileUploadData.selectValue(null, "UPLOAD_FILE_NAME");
         String contentType = (String) fileUploadData.selectValue(null, "UPLOAD_FILE_MIME_TYPE");
         //System.out.println("User File Name---->"+uFileName);
         FileOutputStream output = null;
         InputStream input = null;
         BlobDomain uploadedByteStream = (BlobDomain)fileUploadData.selectValue(null, uFileName);

  • Transfer iMovie 08 Project from one computer to another

    I created an iMovie 08 project on my macbook pro. The footage came from a digital still camera on video mode as opposed to a video recorder.
    I then attempted to transfer the iMovie project to my iMac which I use to sync with my Apple TV.
    I transferred the file over my airport extreme network, and moved the file into the iMovie projects folder in my movie folder in my home folder.
    It shows up as a project, but does not play. All I see in the window is black screen.
    I even imported the raw footage into the iMac so that there was some data there.
    My question is whether there is a way to transfer an iMovie project in iMovie 08 from one computer to another.
    Thanks.

    The macrumours link just telss you how to move the events which is relatively straightforward.
    Alot of advice just seems to rest with leave the projects on your internal drive as they don't take up much space.
    However, http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/im08tricks has a description of how to move the projects and then 'fool' imovie into where the projects are stored.
    Not very flexible but it does allow you to 'clear' your macbook yet when you restore the sym-link file to the right place and restart imovie you can reconnect to all your old projects and events without yellow triangles of death appearing.
    By the by apple needs to sort this out as archiving old projects and events together and preserve the editing is a really basic requirment I think.
    PS anyone found out how to merge projects yet? Another basic function that seems to be lacking.

  • What is the easiest way to transfer a large imovie project from one computer to another in a different location.

    What is the easiest way to transfer an faairly large HD imovie project from one computer to another in a different location. Can you export to drop box? Will the other computer need the exact imovie version?

    OK it depends.
    If you have a finished movie, you can SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE and create your final movie. Then, depending on the size of the finished movie, you can transfer via dropbox or similar service. Ninety minutes is a very long movie for iMovie, but it may work for you. I would suggest 720P to keep the size down.
    If you need to transfer the entire iMovie Project so it can be edited in iMovie at the other end, then you need to transfer the project and event assets to an external hard drive and get the hard drive to the other location.
    Directions are here. Follow the directions for 1) Moving or copying Project to external drive. Then 2) Consolidate Media.

  • Cellphone BlueTooth photo file transfer: Does it function with Tiger OS?

    I have a Nokia cell phone 6256i with BlueTooth that CAN transfer photo files from cell to computer.
    I have Tiger OS in the box, still uninstalled. I am using OS 10.3.9 right now and have not installed Tiger because some months ago, people reported that after installing Tiger and therefore because of Tiger, the BlueTooth photo file transfer function to their computer was lost. (This is not an issue of the OBEX function in BlueTooth being incapacitated by the manufacturer but an issue of a functioning OBEX ceasing to function after the installation of Tiger.)
    I have a Nokia cell 6256i with VzW and am able to transfer photo files from camera to my iMac and I do not want to jeopardize that ability.
    So the question is: If you have a BlueTooth cellphone (and especially if you have a Nokia 6256i), and if you are running Tiger, are you able to transfer photo files via BlueTooth to your computer?
    If so, what version of Tiger are you using? It could be that the earlier versions did not support BlueTooth file transfer but that later versions corrected that problem.
    Until I am sure I will keep Tiger in the black box it came in, so I am hoping to hear some good news. Thank you in advance.

    Isn't transferring a photo the same as transferring
    any other type of file, such as an MP3 ringtone, or a
    MIDI file?
    .......... Lorna says ................................................
    I wasn't sure so I specified PHOTO files.
    I've had both a Sony Ericsson K750 and Sony Ericsson
    K800 during the time that Tiger has been out, and
    never had any issues sending photos from the phone to
    the Mac via Bluetooth.
    .......... Lorna HAS A QUESTION................................................
    This is reassuring. But: WHAT VERSION OF TIGER ARE YOU USING? Meaning, I might have to upgrade to the new version.
    If you're worried, why not try your phone on a
    friends computer running Tiger, or install Tiger on a
    separate partition to try out?

    That is a great idea....... and sadly, most of my friends who live near enough me do not have BlueTooth installed on their computers.

  • IMac file transfer

    Hi, I have a strange problem. I own a G3 imac running 8.6.
    Its CD drive is broken - missing the middle spinning piece - and it's modem is as slow as the dinosaurs. I have files on this computer that I would like to transfer to my newer e-mac, but I can't figure out how to do this. I have tried using my ipod shuffle, as well as a USB card reader, but both need software that I can't download becuase of the broken CD drive. Is there an alternative to e-mailing myself these files or - a digital feat that would probably take days - or buying some expensive hardware?

    Regarding Ethernet connection of Mac OS 10.4 Tiger Macs with older Macs:
    • 10.4 will not share its files with another Mac via AppleTalk, only via TCP/IP, but will accept connection from another Mac via AppleTalk.
    • 9.0 to 10.3 will share both directions using either protocol.
    • 8.6 and earlier will share files only via AppleTalk, and cannot connect via TCP/IP.
    • Third-party software is available for under US$100 to extend the sharing into even older Mac OS.
    >"connect to the [10.4] Tiger computer from the computer that is the [pre 9.0] AppleTalk-only AFP server"...and then drop the files you want onto the Mac OS 10.4 Tiger computer.
