File transfer using wireless network

Hi all
Is it possible to add my 5800 to my home network as a device so I can share files etc. The phone connects automatically for internet access but that's not what I want to do.
Hope this makes sense.

Hi arkwright617 - yes what you say does make sense, and unfortunately I can't give you a clear yes or no answer as you'd have to try a couple of things to see whether it will work.
Just a bit of background so you know where I'm coming from - Some Nokia phones (like the N95) support a technology called UPnP which allows the filesharing you mention to take place relatively easily and painlessly - unfortunately the 5800 doesn't support this technology.
I've had a look at the technical specification of your phone, and it mentions that you have WiFi, but 3G only and I'm not sure exactly what that means - but if it means for example that you can surf the internet (from your phone) connecting via your wireless router rather than your mobile network provider then this is good and we can progress - otherwise it'll definitely be a no go (although you can still transfer files via cable if required you won't be able to do it wirelessly)
If you can surf the internet from your phone, then you will have to run a piece of software on your PC called a Web server - what you can then do is point your web browser on your phone to your PC and you can then download any files you require to your phone.
There are a couple of VERY VERY VERY important provisos you need to be aware of before doing this :
1) Although you will be able to download files from your PC, if you misconfigure your web server then everyone else on the internet could potentially do so too - be very very very careful before going down this road.
2) Even just installing web server software onto your PC could open it up to attacks from the internet - so be very very very careful.

Edward

  • IChatAV and file transfer over wireless network

    Hi there...
    I'd like to let you in on my predicament. Firstly, a bit of background.
    I decided to buy my folks an old iMac from eBay in Australia - and pay for their broadband connection - so that I could video chat to them from the UK, and they could see my 5 year old son for the first time in 4 years. Cute, eh?
    Well, everything was working fine until I decided to go wireless in my home about 3 months ago. I have a static IP address, and purchased a nice new Airport Express to integrate into the system. I allocated my G5 iMac it's own network address (10.0.1.2), and the base station the master address (10.0.1.1). From there, the base station communicates to the router via the static IP... Sound ok?
    Anyway - NOW (or, for as long as I can recall), I CANNOT for the life of me send files over the connection. Video chat and audio chat are fine (although OCCASIONALLY it takes a few goes to be able to see THEM on my computer - I think their bandwidth isn't THAT stable at 512Kbps down and 128Kbps up) - however, the correct ports have been unblocked on the OSX firewall AND the Airport Express base station.
    And just so that you know it's not the folks' fault - I can't send documents/images over the network to friends I KNOW are competent (or, at least more competent than my parents!). There's always an error message at the receiver's end, and the file I'm attempting to send just times out.
    Has anyone any suggestions as to how I might be able to resolve this problem before I expire from old age?!?
    Your thoughts are REALLY appreciated!

    Hi Ralph
    I can see where that might be the case, but file transfer worked flawlessly BEFORE I went wireless using the same modem. The only way to unblock ports on my router is to turn NAT off - it creates a DMZ, so it permits unhindered 2-way traffic...
    It's a pretty confusing piece of kit. Maybe I should just get a Netgear anyway!
    I have a laptop on the wireless network as well, and file transfer works a treat between it and the iMac. All I can think of is that because I'm now working on a LAN, there's a blockage to get out to the "Real World" - even though it's easy for video to pass through.
    I'll check my unblocked ports again, just to be sure. I'm unfamilar with the term "Jabber" - is that what Apple decided to call one of the elements of iChat? Excuse my ignorance...!

  • I woke up at 3am to find my MacBook Pro in the middle of a file transfer using AirDrop.

         I woke up at 3am to find my MacBook Pro in the middle of a file transfer using AirDrop. I had not accepted any file transfers via AirDrop as I was asleep so I am a bit confused by all the posts that say that the only way it will work is by the end user accepting a request to transfer files. I am on a home network which has both a soft and hard firewall. I checked my firewall logs and have no signs of intrusion or intrusion attempts. I checked my network map to see see if someone had brute forced my router and was using it but the only assets listed were mine. My router is set up to not be accessable from wireless computers, and is filtered to only allow use by a assets in the MAC Address list. I am an IT by trade but this is my first mac so I am not completely savy in the ways of the ways of macdom. I have found several posts with suggestions on how to turn off and came up with the following terminal command "defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser DisableAirDrop -boolean YES". My question is this, how is it possible that my AirDrop was activated and in the middle of a file tranfer if I did not initiate it? I do have a MacMini on my network but its WiFi is turned off so the transfer was not with it. I have read on different posts that you cannot AirDrop if the computer is not on the same network but there were no foreign assets on my network. So my question is this
    1. If AirDrop can not be used with another computer if it is not on the same network, how was it being used?
    2. How can AirDrop be used to xfer files if I did not accept or initate it?
         It seems to be a pretty big security hole to me. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Ethan

    It could just be a bad disc - I use Verbatim and have only had one fail in a ten-year time period. Try getting a batch of Verbatims and see if you have any problems. I didn't even know that there were Kodak branded discs...

  • HT204144 File transfer using Airdrop from iphone to Macbook Pro

    File transfer using airdrop form Macbook Pro to iphone is working...but from iphone to Macbook Pro is not working, Why?

    Hi Brok25;
    Thanks for the question.  The resource below explains the specs and settings that are needed for AirDrop.  Check the settings and look to see if your MacBook Pro is listed.
    Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203106
    Sending files to and from an older Mac
    If a Mac you're using with AirDrop was manufactured before 2012, you can send and receive files with other Mac computers.
    On the sending Mac, click "Don't see who you're looking for" in the AirDrop window.
    Select the option to "Search for an Older Mac."
    On the receiving Mac, open a new Finder window and click AirDrop in the sidebar.
    Tips for sending files
    Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on your Mac and your iOS device. Although you don't have to connect to a specific network, Wi-Fi needs to be on to send and receive files using AirDrop.
    Move your devices closer together. AirDrop is designed to work within a range of approximately 30 feet (9 meters). If you need to send a file to someone farther away, consider using File Sharing, iCloud, or email instead.
    If you're using a firewall on your Mac, you won't be able to receive AirDrop files if you have enabled "Block all incoming connections" in the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences.
    Make sure your devices meet system requirements for AirDrop.
    System Requirements
    To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
    In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
    your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
    your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
    your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
    Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.
    To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need the Mac models listed below with Wi-Fi turned on and OS X Lion or later installed.
    MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
    MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
    MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*
    iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
    Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
    Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)
    *The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.
    For help identifying your Mac, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu. You can refer to the Apple Support website to find out if your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch includes a lightning connector.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

    Have a 802.11n time capsule, the range of the wireless network has shrunk down to nothing over last few days. Used to be able to use wireless network anywhere in house, but now can only use in my office. Will not connect to iphones, ipad, itouch, or notebook. Worked fine last week, but over weekend just started having issues.

    It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has appeared recently that is preventing your Time Capsule (TC) from providing a clean RF signal.
    I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible. Look for other Wi-Fis that may be operating nearby. Note those with the strongest signals and which channels they are operating on ... then change the channel used by the TC to be at least 3-5 channels away.

  • File transfer using tcp that  implements in swing

    Can anybody send me the file transfer using tcp that implements in swing codes

    I'm assuming that you're inputing a plain ASCII text SQL file. It's easier to use Readers if you're dealing with plain text, the Output and Input Streams are for Byte input and output. So:
    BufferedReader myReader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("myFile.sql"));
    BufferedWriter myWriter = new BufferedWriter(new InputStreamWriter(mySocket.getInputStream()));
    String inString;
    while((inString = myReader.readLine()) != null)
    myServerWriter.write(inString);
    myServerWriter.writeLine();
    myServerWriter.flush();
    Then, in the server you can use the same method that I'm using for the Buffered Reader to read in the file, and use a BufferedWriter wraped around a FileWriter to output the text to that file. Bravo.

  • Airdrop using wireless network instead of direct connection

    Hello,
    Last night my fiancee and I were moving her backed up music folder from my computer onto her new macbook air '11. My computer is an '11 13" pro. When we were both connected to her wireless network and initiated the airdrop file transfer, it was using the wifi network to send the data which caused the older wrt54g router to max out on bandwidth so the transfer was going really slow (1 MB/s).
    Then when I realized the transfer (27 GB) was going to take longer than I was going to be there, I decided to try and get the airdrop to work directly. I eventually had to delete her network from my list of favorites in network settings, turn off wi-fi, and turn it back on. Then once my pro was NOT connected to any networks, I initiated the transfer to her computer, and it was going closer to 10 MB/s. Thus, it was using the true direct connection airdrop is SUPPOSED to use.
    Now, nowhere does any of the Apple documentation say "...and then you must disconnect from the wireless network common to the computers..." so I am left wondering if this is some bug or why I had to jump through these hoops in order to get the full transfer potential.
    Has anyone else experienced this? And/or does this method work for anyone else?
    Thanks,
    William

    There are only a few devices that have multiple uses. I use a DLink DWL G703AP on my daughter's iMac for wireless connectivity. If you look it up on the DLink site you can see its capabilities. I am sure there are other devices with similar capabilities.

  • Data loss in the secure file transfer using java

    Hi,
    My java Appllication uses the sftp(secure file transfer protocol) for file transferring. when the load is high like 150 GB , data loss occuring for some files especially last chunk of data is missing.
    Core file transfer code
    while (true)
    int read = bis.read(buffer); //Reading bytes into the byte array (buffer) from network stream (bis).
    if (read==-1) {
    break; //Break the loop, if there are no more bytes available in the InputStream.
    bos.write(buffer,0,read); //Writing the same number of bytes what we read into buffer byte array into OutputStream
    complete.update(buffer,0,read); //Giving the same number of bytes what we read above to the checksum calculation.
    bytesSoFar += read; //Incrementing the bytes that we have read from the source.
    //if the bytes transferred are equal to the source file size
    If (bytesSoFar == fileInfo.getFileSize().intValue())
    // Calculate the file checksum.
    // Update DbAuditLog with checksum and no. of bytes read
    else
    // Update DbAuditLog with no. of bytes read
    bos.flush();
    Please help , why the data loss is happening when the big size files transfer
    Note:
    1.150 gb not a single file multiple files.
    2.SFTP no java specific API, So connection is happening through java .io.sockect connection

    so, if you are not getting any exceptions, yet the data is incorrect, it sounds like you are having actual network issues. i'd start looking at things like the actual network cards in the computer as well other equipment involved in the transfer. since you are not getting exceptions, the network stack obviously thinks nothing was lost over the wire, so either the actual hardware has issues, or the network stack, or the issue is on the sending end. the last possibility is that the client is somehow munging the data it is sending. do you control the client code? if so, i'd start checking the client side code for bugs (and/or post it here).
    also, i'm assuming that all of the variables included in your original code are thread local (you aren't sharing any of those buffers/streams/etc between multiple threads).

  • Hi, I am using macbook pro 2009 model.In that, there is wifi hardware is not installed. I am not able to use wireless networks. Anybody can help me out.

    Hello,
    I am using Macbook pro 2009 model. In that, when I tried to connect wireless network and wifi. I am not able to do. I have done R & D regarding this issue. Some them advice to do some below steps.
    Restart your Mac.
    upon start-up, hold down the Opt key until you see your drives.
    click on the recovery drive (note: this will not affect or delete any files you currently have).
    login if needed.
    in the top right hand corner you will see the Wi-Fi icon (hopefully). Click the icon and then click "turn wifi Off" and then again click "turn wifi ON"
    restart your Mac again and start it up normally.
    recover from your near-heart attack.
    I've followed your 1 to 4 steps & then after clicking on the wifi icon, I found Wi-Fi: No hardware installed just beneath the icon. That means no Wifi hardware is installed in this machine. Do you have any suggestion about installing it? I mean how can I get that hardware? Is it available on internet? Thanks a lot again.

    Apparently you have tried everything except - take the monitor in question to the Apple Store along with your computer.  If it works there, the mystery continues.

  • Creating/Using Wireless Network

    I need a step by step tutorial on linking my intel iMac (10.4.6) with my older iMac (10.3.9) with a wireless network. I am using an Airport Extreme to connect each computer to the internet — with no problem. And I have followed instructions on connecting them together (by creating a network) for file sharing. Nuttin happens — no public folders show. What should I see? How do I share files?

    Hi enahs,
    Welcome to Discussions
    I have a question for you:
    Do you have the firewall running on either of the macs? ]If you do, make sure to turn on "Personal File Sharing". You can do this by opening System Preferences, clicking the "Sharing" tab, and clicking "Firewall". You will see "Personal File Sharing" as one of the selections in the list. If that is turned off, it will prevent your mac from sharing any kind of files. If you click on "Advanced" make sure that "Stealth Mode" is not enabled. This is just a precaution to make sure that the computers will actually see each other. Then click on the "Services" tab and make sure that "Personal File Sharing" is turned on here too. Then see if your iMac recognizes the other iMac through Bonjour. To test this, open Safari, click on the "Bookmarks" bar, and select "Show all bookmarks". Then click on "Bonjour" on the left column, and your should see the other iMac there.

  • File transfer using internet tool kit

    HI
    i just need to do simple file transfer between 02 pcs connected over a network ....... i am using the internet toolkit .... i have seen the shipped example FTP browser.vi but i am not quite sure how to work with it .
    consider that i have only to pc's one with ip add 192.168.0.1 and other with 192.167.0.2.... and i want to transfer a file form one to another or vice-versa.....
    Also i came across that to use ftp vi's i should have guideftp(ftp server) installed on my pc (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3534). what the purpose of using this server??
    and how can i achieve the simple task of sending a file from one pc to the other using labview?

    thanks
    The FTP VIs in the internet toolkit implement a FTP client. The FTP protocol is a client/server protocol. In order to use the FTP VIs there needs to be a FTP server for it to connect to. That is the purpose that the guideftp tool you mention is providing.

  • Can I do this: Use wireless network as WAN and create my own LAN.

    I travel quite a bit and many hotels now do not have wired in-room networks.
    So I'm looking for a way to use the wireless network as a wide area network and create a local network in-room behind a router/firewall, preferably with a private SSID..
    I've been reading for quite some time and am confused about whether this is even possible.
    It sounds as if I could use an airport express to join the wireless network then use the Ethernet to connect to another airport or time capsule? It sounds like joining a network on any other airport device (Time Capsule or Airport Extreme) disables all the network functions on hose devices...? I'd like to do this with a time capsule but I'm not really fond of passing my backup all over the hotel network...
    Incidentally, this is about security and not dodging charges, I almost never stay in hotels that charge for Internet. Kind of hard to believe I'm the only one that wants to do this... and if it isn't obvious I don't have any airport devices presently.

    Interim update:
    I picked up an airport express and joined it to the hotel network. I then connected the router that I carry around to the airport express and was able to connect to the internet using my SSID on the router.
    After playing with the airport utility I see that configuring any of the airport devices to replace the current router should be no issue.
    I'll maybe pick up a Time Capsule next week and finish the job.

  • Problem on loading DAT file when using 3G network modem

    Hello,
    I'm having some strange problem when I'm trying to load my game on the part where DAT file with Map Object is read, using 3G Network Modem. This issue started when I migrated my applet from one host to another. Everything loads well, until the user authentication. On user authenticatiom I'm recieving map name which I should load and show the user on it. I'm recieving the message where map name is mentioned, but after, when the process of loading map begins(when I need to read DAT file which is only 15KB) application blocks(browser and JVM also block).
    I thought it could be because of slow network communication, but it's not the reason, since I have tested(using Bandwidth limiter software) with 5 KBs/Second and it loads well and application is running well.
    Any clue why this can happen? If code is needed I'll post some pieces related to the process of map creation.

    You have to upload it with FileReference.upload() to a PHP
    (or other server-side) script which saves it to a folder on the
    server. When the DataEvent.UPLOAD_COMPLETE_DATA event has been
    dispatched you can then use the FileReference.name to load from the
    file on the server just like any other image.
