File transfer via flash drive locks MacBook
Switched from a PC laptop recently to a MacBook. After the usual growing pains, still have a problem occasionally in transferring large files (folders of IT documentation and some are 300-500MB) via my Cruzer 1GB flash drive. Some transfer fine, while others lock up the machine before the transfer is complete. After recovering, can transfer the file again and it may work OK. Any ideas would be appreciated.

My friend, I believe you're right on. I may be speaking too soon but I tried my Verbatim flash drive and transferred three rather large files with no problems whatsoever. Hopefully the problem is solved. I was glad to see someone else was having the same problem. I was about to dump this MacBook. The transferring of files is important to my work and I haven't got time to fool with the problem. Thanks again.

I have been periodically copying files to a flash drive to put in my car's hard drive. This was working fine until I downloaded and installed Itunes 11. When I copy the files,
the songs show in the flash window as "protected" and then do not transfer to my car's harddrive. Is there a new procedure for this? Even songs that I copy to Itunes via a cd also show as protected.Without a hardware lock I dont think there is a way to lock the drive cross-platform. You can lock all the files on the drive, which will prevent them from being modified, but that's only a superficial lock, as the "lock" checkbox can be edited in both windows and OS X.

How can I transfer my edited RAW files to a flash drive?
I have 30 RAW files (NEF) from a holiday party that I have edited, and would like to give to a friend for further editing. We both work on Macs. I selected the 30 photos in Bridge, went to "Copy to" and selected the flash drive. The raw files along with their xmp files show up. But unfortunately when I bring up the files on the flash drive using the "View as Cover Flow" option in Preview, they show up in the original RAW form - as if I'd just downloaded them off my camera again - without edits.
Many people have mentioned exporting and DNG conversion. With regard to the first: when I select photos, right click, and go to "export to" my only option is "hard drive". Once I select that, nothing appears to happen. No new folders or files seem to appear in my hard drive. With regard to the second: I am nervous about losing information via the DNG conversion. I want to make sure my friend has all the information pertaining to each photo in the event that she needs to do a more significant round of second edits.
How can I achieve this transfer? Also, should the fact that my friend plans on using Lightroom for edits bear any significance on my decisions? Thank you...The Save as DNG is not in Bridge, It is only available in Camera Raw.
Open your file in ACR, at the lower left click the SAVE IMAGE button. From there you can select several different formats.
Select DNG and adjust the options. You can also embed the original raw file inside the DNG (but gives larger file size)
It's not clear if you are opening the files directly from the flash drive or saving them first to the hard drive.
I would recommend always saving files to the hard drive, eject the flash drive, and then open from there rather than directly from flash drive
We've all had flash drives that go bad or act wonky.
Not trying to work on the files while they still reside on the flash drive is just one less problem to worry about.

I'm sorry about the caps. I realized that I was typing with my caps lock on, and was too lazy to rewrite this. The thing is that when I try to copy pictures, videos, and music onto my macbook via flash drive, it says it's copying but then when it's finished, the library goes blank. There's no error message with it; my folder goes completely blank.

How can I access files from a flash drive that were previously saved using a Windows computer? When I attempt to open the file on MacBook Pro, it is asking to "convert file to"; none of the options I choose work. I also have Microsoft Office (with Word) installed on the Mac as well.
Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

I converted aif files to mp3 files in iTunes so I could put them on a flash drive. Now when I transfer an album to the flash drive I get both the aif files and the mp3 files on the flash drive. How do I get the iTunes to only copy the smaller file?
My suggestion to use the smart playlist was more along the lines of making one list with rules to show everything in your library as long as it was kind "mpeg" (= mp3).
Smart playlists cannot be edited manually, only by changing the rules. You can use them as the basis for another smart playlist though.
There is added overhead to using smart playlists, so don't go overboard. -
How do I transfer files from a flash drive to my new iMac? I get a folder with "no name" that I can live with but I can't find a way to transfer the flass drive files to to iMac hard drive.

Updated to latest operating system OS X Mavericks on MacBook Pro and now won't let me drag files onto a flash drive.
The Flash Disk must be NTSF formatted. Writing to NTFS requires 3rd party drivers (Tuxera, Paragon). Reading from NTFS however does not require these. So install NTFS drivers, or format the drive in FAT32 from Disk Utility.

I take a .NEF file and a .JPG file with every click. When I transfer the files using a flash drive to another computer I never get all of the files to transfer. I get some of the .NEF and some of the .JPGs but not all. How come?
If you're exporting a project then you'll only get the images in that project. Also if any of the masters are referenced then you won't get those masters unless you check Consolidate masters into exported library
It might be best if you started from the beginning and explained what it is your are trying to do and how you're going about doing it. Also a description of you're hardware/software setup would be helpful. -
I have digitized several old vinyls as WAV files and have them in my MacBook Pro in an iTunes playlist. I have arranged the list under the column headings of "Grouping", "Name", "Time", "Artist", "Album" and "Genre". When I copy the files to a flash drive by drag-and-drop, none of the headings except "Name" show up. How to preserve all of the column headings when copying the file to an external device? I have the same issue when trying to sync from iTunes 11 on my MacBook to my iPhone 4 iOS6.1. I blindly did the iOS upgrade to 6.1 (more fool me) and since then have not been able to use my phone as an iPod.
I have tried restoreing it, I ve tried restoring it to a new phone but it hasn't worked for me.
The sync starts and the capacity bar in iTunes shows capacity including and music or films etc that are to be included in the sync and then iTunes stops the sync and nothing has been transfered. As with your experience the music is shown in iTunes under Music, under Devices as greyed out with the syncing icon (dotted circle) to the left of it.
When I try to include photos in the sync, I also get an error msg stating the connection to the iPhone has been lost. I am trying to do the sync vis USB, so I dont why I get this error.
I can of course download any music I've bought from Apple from my iCloud to my phone but I want to be able to put any music I want on to it like I could before on iOS5. -

I recently upgraded my software to 10.6.3 on my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. When I transfer movie files specifically to my USB flash drive and external hard drives, they now cause my imac to freeze. If the file size is larger than 500K I experience this problem.
What is the issue?They are formated as MS-DOS Fat

I put the flash drive into my laptop, selected " add file to library", selected the songs I wanted from the flash drive, and it looked like they were added as the names show under " recently added". Then I removed the flash drive from my laptop But when I select one of the songs and try to play it a message saying "the song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Dragging the files to "Automatically Add..." is pretty easy once you know where to look. Just make sure iTunes is running when you do it; otherwise the files will just sit there until the next time you open iTunes.
(Interestingly, the way you originally tried to do would have worked fine except for one little detail: you have to first go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and check the box for "Copy files..." If that is not done, iTunes will reference the files on the flash drive, which of course are not accessible once the drive is removed, as you saw.)

Sequencing images in iphoto slideshow for photo frame playback via flash drive
I have created a slide show in iphoto and saved it to a flash drive. I want the show to play in a particular sequence. On the computer that works. When playing the show via the flash drive on my Pandigital Photo Frame, however, the images randomize. The images have numbered filenames, and the shuffle function on the photo frame is turned off. What do I need to do differently?
When I connected the frame to the computer, no photo files showed, not even when I added the flash drive to the frame.
The sequence of the files on the flash drive is numerical, just what I am after. Something seems to be happening within the frame. In addition, while I have placed no files into the frame's internal memory, and none show up, when I play the slideshow, files that I once had in the slideshow file but later deleted, still appear!? -
I have a Mac Book Pro with 10.6.8 and want to back up my files using a flash drive. It says I did it but when I tried to check on my other Mac - an I Mac with 10.5.8, thedata does not seem to be there. I cant see photos, etc.. It shows the backup as a file and shows various system info. but there are no photos or other files shown.

MikeA PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data. Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier. I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4. If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place. I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

How do I copy a file from a flash drive to my iMac
I am trying to import my contacts from my old PC to my new iMac. I had all my files transfered by an Apple store tech. My contacts went to my Address Book. Which is fine, but I now want to import them into Office for iMac 2011 Outlook. So I exported them out of Outlook 2007 for Windows into a file on a flash drive. I am now trying to import them from the flash drive into Outlook on my iMac. I can't figure out how to find the flash drive on the iMac to import the file. HELP!!!
By default, all drives are hidden from the desktop. Pretty dumb in my opinion, but that's the default.
From the desktop, choose Finder > Preferences. Turn on the check boxes for all drive types you want to always appear on the desktop.
