File Transfers in Chat Rooms?

We're running OS X Server 10.8.3. Is there any known way to have the ability to transfer files inside of a Chat Room? I find it mind-numbing that this isn't possible. We cannot use the chat room feature at all without this. Does anyone know of a way to get it to work or are we stuck now having to look for a third party chat room product?
thanks,
Ben

I'm not sure either of you understood my question. I'll try to make it more clear, in case anyone else has any ideas or feedback that could help:
We are using Mac OS X Server, 10.8.3. We are using the "Messages Server" service. When using a "persistent chat room" -- one of the supposed features of OS X Server. From http://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/#communication ...
"Messages Server brings the collaborative power of instant messaging to your organization. Now workgroups can transfer files securely, share group messages, conduct audio conferences, even broadcast a presentation, movie, or photo slideshow to other Messages users running OS X."
And from the OS X Server product overview PDF, pg. 18...
Group Collaboration Made Easy
Messages Server works with OS X to automatically populate users’ buddy lists with
members of the groups to which they belong, so it’s easy for them to start communicating. And thanks to store-and-forward functionality, Messages Server allows users
to send messages to buddies who are online, combining the advantages of instant
messaging and email.
Messages users can request Messages Server to create and host a persistent chat
room. Perfect for virtual-team scenarios, project-specific discussions, and real-time,
blow-by-blow updates, the chat room allows individuals to join at any time, leave
when they need to—even log out and shut down—and still come back to review
all communications from the time the chat room opened.
Here's the problem I'm perplexed by:
File transfers work just fine when doing 1-to-1 chats. However, in a "Chat Room", they do not work at all.
I realize that this may be "just how it is" but I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of a way to make it possible. Seems like a ridiculous limitation, and one that makes the entire (otherwise useful) feature of "persistent chat rooms" all but moot for us.
thanks,
Ben

• IChat File Transfer/Video Chat won't work... :(

Hi Everyone,
I am trying to get ichat to allow file transfers/video chatting on my Mac, I have a feeling that the setup through the routers that we have are not allowing it to function as it is constantly giving me errors. My set up is a Cable Modem hooked into a Netgear WGR614 v6 and then an ethernet wire running from that router to a Linksys WRT54G v8. I have the WRT54G set up with the following settings:
IP: 192.168.1.136
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1
Static DNS 1 and 2: Are my IP's DNS servers
Static DNS 3 is blank
Local IP address is .199 with a subnet of 255.255.255.128
I have DHCP enabled starting at .200 with 30 users
My computer is also set up statically at port .233.
The Netgear WGR614 v6 is set up with the following settings:
Get IP/DNS dynamically from ISP
DHCP Range from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.51. Router is on a subnet of 255.255.255.0 the linksys is set up statically to the Netgear
SO, this brings me to my issue, I am trying to get ichat file transfer/video to work, I have followed the instructions for setting up portforwarding from portforward.com for ichat on both the netgear and the linksys. On the linksys, i set the IP address to forward to as my computers (.233)
On the netgear, i set the ip address to forward to as 192.168.1.136 (the static IP of the linksys).
Anyway, I am hoping someone can point out what I am doing wrong as I am still getting this error: An AIM error has occurred. Unable to talk directly to your buddy. I am also getting this error: An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout.
My OS X firewall is off.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE!!

Hi,
I am not sure I have understood your Networking here.
You say the Netgear is getting an IP (Via DHCP) from the ISP.
You go onto say it is at 192.168.1.1
It issues IP addresses from 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.51 and the Linksys has an IP outside this range at 192.168.1.136
Your computer is at 192.168.1.233
As both devices are using the 192.168.1.xxx group and doing DHCP (even with restricted groups) how does the computer know which one to connect to ?
You should be able to change the group that each device is using for it's own network (I would suggest the Netgear)
You should also turn Off DHCP (to the LAN) in the Netgear so it's own network (subnet) only goes as far as the Linksys.
Similarly in the Linksys make sure DHCP is Off or change the Mac to use Manually (Static) with DHCP.
Both devices can do UPnP found in the Administration tab in the Linksys and the WAN page of the Netgear.
Turn Off/disable all Port Forwarding in both devices.
It may also pay to copy across the Linksys and Computer the DNS server IPs from the Netgear.

• Messages cannot accept file transfers

Communicating just fine between two computers on Messages, but one of the computers gets an error message when we try to attach a small picture of any kind. It says that the intended recipient cannot accept file transfers, yet the other user can send them to that user just fine. Both computers in the same room on the same wifi network (doing that to test, not to avoid talking to each other in the same room!)
The computer that is getting the error message can't send to other users either. Same error message, so it's not just one recipient that "cannot accept file transfers", which makes me feel that it's an issue with the sending computer.

Hi,
In the Window Menu use the File Transfer option to display the File Transfer Window.
Does this give any further Info ?
What sort of Account is this chat taking place on ?
AIM, Bonjour, iMessages or Jabber.
Not all Jabber servers allow File Transfers.
AIM Transfers need port 5190 on the UDP protocol to be Open. (preferably your router should be using UPnP to allow two computers to use the same ports)
If iMessages open the Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities
Does this list URLFileTransferAgent ? (It should not - and the File transfer window probably says "waiting")
Does it list IMFileTransferAgent ?
This is used by AIM and Jabber transfers.
If either are present highlight them and then use the Quit Option top left and confirm Force Quit.
From the way you post the details I am thinking it is more likely to be an AIM transfer you are talking about.
If this is the case then try a PRAM reset.
Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

• After updating my ipad2 to ios6 my favorite chat room is not working. They can see me but I can't see them.

Before I updated everything worked fine. This is thru safari on the full version of a website. Now after I enter my chat room and everyone can see me and what I type but I can't see them. I was on the phone with apple. 1st call, they had me empty cookies and cache, that didn't work. I did a hard reset? held the off button and the round button. that didn't work, but I was able to see one persons "hi" post. 2nd call they had me do a reset, thru the general in settings(I was also transferred to a supervisor which makes me think that I am the only one with this problem). I was able to see 5 people say hi, but still unable to see them after the intial.
I use to see the little pinwheel at the top left hand side next to ipad and the signal strength pinwheel all the time but now I don't see it doing that. While in the chat.
Any ideas. The supervisor sorta suggested tap-a-talk. But I didn't want to spend the money if I dont have to and Im not sure it would fix this..
I did notify the website the chat room is thru so they know also, but no answers yet.

Hi
Have you set the Quicktime settings, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed set what you get from your ISP go no higher then 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
Restart iChat.

• How do I get an empty chat room to go away?

I know there are similar questions on the board, but nothing I've tried has worked so far. When I log on, an empty chat room pops open. Before upgrading to 10.6, I used to get a prompt every couple months about this chat room, but it was so inconsistent, I never tried to get rid of it. Now its happening every time I log on. Suggestions?

Hi,
Welcome to the  Discussions
In iChat Menu > Preferences > Messages do you have Save Transcripts turned On ?
If so, do you also have the "In new Chat Window, Show..." option ticked ?
Delete any Saved Transcript for this Blank room
The Messages pane will tell you where they are stored at the Save Transcripts spot.
You may have to delete com.apple.ichat.plist because in iChat 4 you could use an option to "Remember Open chats Across (iChat) Launch but this option is not there in iChat 5.
This file has to be gone to manually in your Home Folder/Library/Preferences
Unfortunately it will lose all the settings you have made in the iChat Preferences regarding Font choice,Colour, Bubble colour, Incoming Bubble and Font colour and Alert Messages, Save Transcripts and the Menu bar icon plus any Saved Status Messages you have made.

• File transfering using Sockets

can anybody help me to find the simple sample code for file transfering. i m new to java and having problem in client server assignment. sending message (chatting) is done, but i still need file transfering part. only one file at one time is good enough.
thanks.
moe

Since you're asking for help with your homework, I won't give you any code but I will point you in the right direction. Sockets can be used to stream data and files also use sockets. If you put the two together, you'll be able to stream your files between JREs.

• Why does it say "doesn't accept file transfers"?

when I try to send a file over ichat I keep getting the message that "ichat doesn't accept file transfers" What am I doing wrong?

HI,
It can depend on which Jabber server you are using and what has been enabled on that particular Server.
That's one possible.
Another is that the Applications at the other end is not set up to accept File Transfers, such as someone logged in to AIM Express in a web browser will have limited abilities.
Finally, AIM file transfers are on a different port and or internet protocol and this port (and or the Protocol) may not be allowed though your Mac settings in.
Lets start with the last.
AIM Logins in version up to and including version 5 are on port 5190 by default using the TCP Protocol.
We (The regular posters) have been suggesting using port 443 for this for a long time. Now iChat 6 and Messages in Mountain Lion actually use port 443.
File Transfers on on Port 5190 but use the UDP Protocol.
It always uses this and this cannot be changed.
In the Mac Firewall in some versions of the OS UDP traffic can be blocked.
Check the Advanced Button settings.
Of course the port has to be opened in the modem (if it routes) or your router.
In some cases such as the Port Forwarding method you can have models that specify Protocol as well as ports. Opneing it for 5190 and TCP can block it being opened for 5190 and UDP.
If you are using UPnP (Or Apple's Port Mapping Protocol) you should not have problems.
With the second option above you can pull down the Video Menu and open Connection Doctor.
This will tell you your Capabilities.
In a Buddy List highlight a Buddy.
Use the CMD and i keys together (Get Info)
The Capabilities tab in here will tell you whether the Buddy has the abilities to File Transfer.
The first option I suggested can only really be checked using a Third Party Jabber app such as Psi
Basically after you set up an Account in Psi you can access an option called Service Discovery that iChat (and Messages in Mountain Lion) does not do.
This will tell you if the server is set up for File Transfers or Group chats plus things called Transports.
With some servers you will need to (sub) register for the Services you also want to be active.
Using this method to view Google's GoogleTalk server tells you nothing about the Services they have active.
As you may have worked out you may need to check out the server's ability if you are using a Jabber servers even if the symptom looks more like reason two.

• Ichat won't accept or send file transfers/freezes

I am running OS X 10.7.5 on my computer here at work, the same as everyone else here. We all use ichat, and we often use file transfers. For the past year or so, if I try to accept a file transfer, ichat freezes. Recently (within the past 2 weeks), even sending images (which used to be fine) causes ichat to freeze, and the image isn't sent. Occasionally it works, but usually not. Larger files never send.
When I go to Window>File Transfers, loading this windows also causes iChat to freeze, and I have to restart. If I restart after doing this, ichat refuses to load, immediately freezing (because it is trying to load that file transfer window), and I end up having to delete the com.apple.iChat.plist file from my preferences in order to get ichat to open at all.
I have googled this issue a lot but have never found a solution. Please help!

Hi,
You List Lion (OS X 10.7.x) so that mean iChat 6.
Which service are you using ?
Bonjour, AIM or Jabber to do this ?
The AIM account, if you have one, will login to the server on port 443.
However to send Pics-in-Chats or Files then it changes to using port 5190.
It would be unusual for one computer on the LAN network to be blocked for this port.
It is possible to block it on a Mac.
In the Finder use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and type /etc as the name of the folder.
This will open the etc folder (which is in Hard Drive Name/Private and is normally hidden)
Navigate to the Hosts files and Open With TextEdit.
It should read like this if unaltered
It would normally be used to block Servers (IP addresses) rather than specific Ports
If it is the Bonjour account try deleting the com.apple.iChat.Subnet.plist (it is in the same folder as the com.apple.ichat.plist one is).

• Dreamweaver CS4 and SWF Chat Room Question

I am installing a chat room and using a black HTML page to put it on as I want to have a certain background.and its a SWF file. I tried the play button but
nothing happens. I followed the directions from this site called: "Insert and Preview SWF Files."
I do have Adobe Flash 10 installed. The gray placeholder is there and I do have the two dependent files as well. Do I have to upload this to my server before I can test it and see if all is working properly. I can send the original zipped file to you if you want to see what i have. I was also playing around with it at first before I got the article ("Insert and Preview SWF Files.") and when i copied all the code from a number of different files it was all showing up but still did not work. The directions for the software give you a link to my files to put in and thats it and say to upload to my server.
Please let me know and if you need the software Let me know an email to send it to you. I dont see an "attach file" button in here.

Hi there,
better post your question in the regular Dreamweaver General Discussions forum. The current forum deals with questions which are related to the Dreamweaver extension ADDT, which generates server-side code and has been discontinued over a year ago, that is, the number of fellow forum participants is much larger in the regular Dreamweaver forums.

• Firefox crashes when I attempt t enter a SPCN chat room

Firefox immediately crashes when I attempt to enter a SPCN Chat Room. This forces me to use MS Internet Explorer which i hate to do.
I am told there there is a plug in that solves this problem, but cannot find it.

You can uninstall (remove) the Java Console extensions and disable the Java Quick Starter extension, you do not need them to run Java applets.
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Multiple_Java_Console_extensions
See also http://www.java.com/en/download/help/quickstarter.xml - What is Java Quick Starter (JQS)? What is the benefit of running JQS? - 6.0

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile]]
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"

• IChat File Transfers fail on 10.7.x Server

I started this Post over in the iChat FORUM, and it was suggested I post here too: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3840760
I have an OS X Server 10.6 setup with iChat and it works perfectly.
This Mac is connected directly to the WWW, no firewall.
I have an OS X Server 10.7 setup with iChat and it works perfectly EXCEPT for File Transfers
This Mac is connected directly to the WWW, with a Netgear FVS336Gv2.
I have opened all the correct ports for TCP & UDP and mapped them to my OSX Server 10.7 at 192.168.2.100
I am totally stumped now, why should JUST file transfers do not work?
This iChat OSX Server 10.7 is setup for people on the same server, using the same domain.
File Transfer in iChat WORKS on the internal network OK :-)
File Transfer in iChat DOESN'T WORK on external network :-(
Here is a screenshot of my routers portforwarding...
http://www.jrpmedia.co.uk/shared/Remote%20Desktop%20Picture.jpg

If you are having intermittent or sporadic file transfer problems.. or experiencing only one way file transfers on a local lan:
Pick One:
5222 TCP Client authenticates and sends txt messages to the Server on this port.(Apparently TLS if avaialble)
5223 TCP Client authenticates and sends txt messages to the Server on this port.(Legacy Forced SSL)
Enable these:
16402 UDP ClientA communicates with ClientB directly on this port for video chat. (Apparently SIP)
7777 TCP - Screwy file transfer proxy port.
From what I can tell about file transfers:
File transfer proxy.
ClientA tells Server to tell ClientB that there is a file waiting to be picked up at ClientA on a "randomly" assigned ClientA port.
ClientB fails to directly connnect to ClientB on this "randomly" chosen port.
ClientA fails then reverts to proxy mode. KEY STEP
ClientA sends the file to the Server on this 7777 tcp port.
Server proxies the file to the ClientB.
Warning: Having too many directly connectable ports between ClientA and ClientB can cause confusing communcation failures for file transfers between iChat/Messages clients. If one of the clients is able to establish partial communication, it will not properly fail then revert to proxy mode.
We don't want to open a crap load of ports for file transfer and therefore prefer to have it transfer files via the server proxy port
Communication flow required to get this to go:
from clientA to server 5222-5223 (pick one), 7777 for auth and file transfer
from clientB to server 5222-5223 (pick one), 7777 for auth and file transfer
from client to client 16402 for video
The above solved our screwy partially working file transfers... hopefully this helps someone.

• Denied Access to Chat Room...

I can chat with individuals, but about a week ago, I could not join AIM Chat rooms. The error message reported an AIM socket error.
Following instructions I found here, I dragged my com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist file into the trash.
When I restarted Messages and tried the chat room, I received a different error message.
Error> NoError
I returned to read up on this issue, and was directed toward my firewall settings. After verifying them, I tried once more. Still no joy.
Are there any other ideas?

Hi,
We have to look to iChat for some of this.
Previously iChat logged in on port 5190 to a server called login.oscar.aol.com (or slogin...... if you used SSL)
When iChat does Direct IMs (where you send pic or files in a Chat) it changes to a peer-to-peer connection still on port 5190 but on the UDP protocol (The login is using the TCP protocol).
It does the same (changing protocol) when doing Group chats (Chatrooms)
Since iChat 6 and the later Messages version the login was changed to port 443 with Messages also changing to the api.oscar.aol.com server.
However in Group chats and Direct IMs it still uses port 5190 and the UDP Protocol.
If you Firewall is On then you need to unlock it and check the Option button.
The Allow Signed Software option should be ticked.
IMAgent and iChat or Messages (depending on your app) should be in the list.
Stealth should not be used (it messes up Video and Audio only and Screen Sharing connections over AIM and Jabber)
Your router should also be allowing at least this two port 443 and 5190 and the two related Protocols (TCP for 443 and UDP for 5190) if stated.
Having a router doing UPnP should take care of this.
In The Preferences of the app > Accounts > Server Settings tab you also have the option in AIM login to use SSL to login.
Whilst in Messages the server name does not change you are logging into the server differently.
There maybe issues that turning Off SSL may get around (In iChat the Login Server name changes as it uses a different server)

• Setting up Chat Room with Jabber

I am trying to create a chat room for multiple users all using a Jabber (gmail) account within ichat. Is there a special naming protocol to creating a chat room or do you need to create an address somewhere before joining this chat room?
I have no problem doing it with my .me account but for work everyone is on gmail so we ideally be able to use the Jabber accounts for group chats.
I did mange to "create" one called [email protected] (our domain) but when I tried to join I get the grey spinning wheel and don't get any further.
Clearly I'm missing something so any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Sarah

Hi,
GoogleTalk is supposed to allow group chats.
These tend to be called "Conferences" on most Jabber servers.
Most Jabber servers have a section of additional itme your can "register" for and Login to.
However to do this takes a third party app like Psi.
This can then do "Service Discovery" on the server in question and show what features you can sign up for.
These can include "Transports" that allow you to add Buddies from different services and Conference calls.
Having said that if you do Service Discovery on GoogleTalk you find nothing
Many apps also presume the server name is the last part of your user ID and for Google with it's @gmail.com and @googlemail.com this does not work properly in some of these apps.
This page has Instructions for how to set up a Transport to MSN using Psi and you can see the Service Discovery panel.
Essentially a room has to be given a Name and this is coupled with the Jabber server name it is on so that it looks something like this:-
[email protected]
The room "ralph" is on the conference server at the jabber.org.uk server.
Substituting [email protected] does not seem to work as a room name.
It may pay to start from a Web Browser login and see if a room name becomes apparent that way.
Edit
The last two "links" I have tried to remove the Links but they keep get added back

Problems with File Transfers Over Firewire 800.
Over the past month, I have had problems when transfering files from my harddrive, over Firewire 800 to a portable drive. I usually transfer very large files (20gb or more) to the portable drives for moving files around. When I drag a file over to copy onto a drive, the transfer starts normally. If I drag more files to copy over, the computer screen goes darker and a large icon comes up that looks like a power button icon. It tells me to restart, so I have to do a hard shut down on my G5. Weird. I also get the dark screen of death sometimes when I am transfering those large files and open another application to do some work while it's copying. It's killing me. I am having to sit here and wait for the transfer to finish before I can do anything.
Any thoughts...

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? Sounds like it could be a RAM problem.
