File Type Compatiblity

I need some help. I've downloaded a couple of short "movie" type clips taken with a Canon camera and wish to email them to (largely) Windows users. The current files are each 100 + MB (.avi) files. Too big to email. I've used the supplied Canon software to download them onto my Mac as I am not aware of any other way to do this. Using the Canon software, I resized the files to 100 - 200 KB files and saved them in a Quicktime (.mov) format. Mac plays them fine but not Windows. Window launches the Win Media Player but advises the file type (codec) is not compatible. What do I need to do with the current files to make them play on Windows and, if different, what do I do next time I want to make short video clips.
Thanks is advance for any advice or suggestions.

Doh, are they technologically illiterate? >_< IIRC, apple.com, quicktime, download, run the exe...
Anyways, I felt bad for giving such a lame answer, so I racked my brain and searched google and eventually found it.

Simple to to use; just drag and drop and choose the file type output you want. Off the top of my head I'd suggest avi/xvid, but I'm not too sure.
Hope this solves your problem!

  • Non-compatible artwork file types?

So I get a lot of my own artwork for itunes elsewhere on the web and assign it to songs manually. Does anyone know if there are certain file types that are not usable, or a size limit on artwork files? I have several pretty big cover files, but sometimes I'll try to use even a smaller one and it will just be white. Thanks for the help if you know anything about this.

Don't know for sure but I know .jpg works in general. There may be a size limit. I believe the files from iTunes are 600x600, not sure. bmp may work as well as png, proprietary files from Paint Shop Pro or other editors probably don't work.

  • Using Photoshop Elements to edit raw.  Doesn't recognize file type

I recently downloaded photoshop elements to use as my editor within Iphoto. I've set it up as the default editor in preferences, and made the appropriate change in the advanced settings within Iphoto so that it exports edits in RAW. When I attempt to edit by double clicking, Photoshop Elements gives me a msg that it can't open file because it does not recognize the file type. Does anyone know why this would be? I am using a Nikon D60. I haven't downloaded the Nikon software onto the computer (not sure if that has anything to do with it). Does photoshop elements need anything additional? Any help appreciated.
    Thx
    Richie

    Richie:
As Terence mentioned we can help with using PSE within iPHoto but why PSE doesn't recognize the D60 files is an Adobe issue. I believe there are Adobe plugins available to handle RAW files. Check the Adobe site for those. For using PSE to edit jpgs within iPhoto this may be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • LiveType .ipr won't import into FCP - File type not recognized

This is usually two things: In compatible versions of FCP or a missing element that allows the .ipr files to be imported. I have forgotten what the enabler is but it's obviously working on your G5 or you wouldn't be asking the question. If you create a LT file on your G4, can you import it into FCP on the G$?
(You can search the forum for similar problems, it comes up about twice a month.)
That leaves the problem of incompatible copies of FCP. You have not provided that information. FCP is not backwards compatible.

  • Allow filter file type at import!

It should be possible to exclude/include file types, especially video/image in the import wizard (or through some preference).

Lossless is really good, however the files are large and will drain your battery quicker. I settled on AAC at 192kbps as an acceptable Quality to Battery life compromise. MP3 will be more compatible if you wish to use the tracks on non Apple hardware or software.
Here's an article that compares formats: http://www.recordstorereview.com/misc/aacmp3part2.shtml

I am trying to download mp3 files or music files and they are coming up as adobe files when the window pops up and it has no option to change the file type and i have clicked the other options and they dont change anything either (e.g. open, save etc) If you then go ahead and try to download it has finished withina few seconds and you have no music file at the end of it.

.EXE files are not very easy to open on Macs with Mac OS X 10.4.3 or earlier. They typically require an emulation program to run Windows.
    See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
Newer Macs are more capable of running Windows, and can do so natively. You can attempt to find a 10.3.9 compatible alternative compatible application as well. Audio and video files don't play very well on emulation, but work fine in Windows native compatible Macs.

    Hi JR39,
The error message outlined in your post indicates that your email message includes a file that is not compatible with any of the applications included in your phone. You may look for a compatible third party application that will allow you to read/access the files in question.
Please note that Verizon Wireless does not recommend/support any 3rd party applications and if you encounter any issues with a 3rd party application you will need to contact the application's developer for assistance.

Are these downloads from the iTunes Store? If so, it sounds like you are trying to sync the HD version of the video.  You should try to download the Standard Definition copy instead and sync that to your device as HD content is not compatible with the Nano.  See here for more information:
iTunes: May be unable to transfer videos to iPhone, iPad, or iPod
To prevent HD versions from being downloaded in the future head to the iTunes Store, click the Purchased link, and then select Movies/TV Shows and remove the tick mark next to Download HD when available.  You should be able to download the SD version now from under this same page.

  • FW MX, Mac OSX: "unknown file type" error

    Hi everyone,
I'm having troubles opening a file created in FW MX.
When I first tried saving it, I got a message that the "file
    could not
be found". I figured that was due to the enclosing folders
    containing
accented characters and I saved it to the HD's root instead.
That seemed to work fine, however when trying to open the
    file, it now
tells me "Could not complete your request. Unknown file
    type."
    Any ideas?

Hello Issebek1 and welcome to the Palm forums.
The Voice Memo application on the Treo 755p is not compatible with the Voice Memo conduit that is available for Palm Dektop on the Mac and the PC.  If you need to sync voice memos, you may need to purchase a third-party application for voice memos that can sync them back to your Mac.  I would check with MotionApps' mVoice.
As for the duplicate calendar records, the log indicates that you are making changes to the record on the Mac and on the Palm without first performing a HotSync after changing the appointment on either side.  I would clean up the records on the Mac, and then set the Calendar conduit to Desktop overwrites Handheld and then perform a sync.  Then switch the Calendar contact back to Synchronize.

    /private/var/folders/zz/ZZy5x7B9EI8VU0rHf5s-Lk+TI/-Tmp-/iPhoto/P1020462.jpg.
There was also an upgrade from Apple I believe earlier this week?? - thanks.

Have you run Disk Utility to repair disk permissions on your HD? You might also try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist. It will be recreated when you launch iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard.
