File type on external Seagate HDD
I have connected a 2TB Seagate external HDD to my Mac Mini. Running the latest version of Mavericks.
I have made 3 partitions.
1TB for TimeMachine backup.
600GB for Videos and 400GB for photos.
I formatted the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before doing the partitions.
Now when I have looked at the drives in disk utility, Time Machine is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
But the Video and Photos partitions are MS-DOS (FAT32)
I've already spent the last few hours transferring photos and videos over to the relevant partitions from another external hard drive. They were Windows files.
Do I leave them as FAT files? Or do I erase the partitions and make them Mac OS extended and transfer all photos and videos again?
Fat has the advantage of being cross platform, but the amont you can load onto ti is reduced by about 45%. That's not a typo - a 1Tb FAT drive will stop loading and warn you that no more files can be copied at about 550Gb. I have a 16Gb Flash drive that won't let me load more than 10Gb when I format it FAT, but I can jam just short of 16Gb as HFS Journaled, onlt iy can't be read by my PC. So it's a toss up - cross platform use or max storage.

My Macbook 2.1 does not seem to "see" my external seagate HDD.
I ahve connected the power to the HDD, and pulgged the HDD to the Macbook via the usb port. The light is on the HDD, but Macbook is not seeing teh HDD. Any tips?
You may need to format the drive for the MacBook. With the drive plugged in, open Disk Utility. It's in the Utililities folder in your Applications folder. You should see the new drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the external drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click on the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility. Your external drive should now appear on your desktop.

HP Z620 does not boot when external Seagate hard drive is connected
I'm troubleshooting an HP Z620 workstation with 32GB RAM, one 500GB HDD + one 1TB HDD running Win 7 Enterprise 64 bits, this user has 2 external USB 3.0 HDDs, one Buffalo 2TB + one Seagate Desktop Backup Plus 4TB; the problem comes when the external Seagate HDD is connected and the PC is turned one, for some reason the PC does not boots, it shows a message that states "Non-disk or no boot disk error" and sometimes it tries to boot, but then goes thru the "Windows repair option" or "Start Windows normally" routine, none of these results on starting the PC.
The only way this PC starts and works properly is when PC is started with the external Seagate HDD disconnected and then connected once the Win 7 is up and running; the problem described above does not happens with the external Buffalo 2TB HDD and the Seagate HDD have been tested throughly and no errors or problems have been detected on it.
I'll really appreciate your attention to this, as well as your prompt response.

Unable to empty trash due to external USB HDD's locked files and no permission?
Hello.
I was doing a major cleanup with an external Seagate USB HDD due to low free disk spaces. It has two partitions/drives: FAT32 (using it for on other non-Apple machines like Windows 2000 SP4) and HFS [Time Machine only]). I threw about 30,000 items (copied from an old Windows 2000 SP4 machine's HDD with NTFS back a few years ago) from FAT32 partition/drive into the trash can. However, I am having problems emptying it. Most of them were emptied, but some were left behind.
This four years old MacBook Pro's Mac OS X 10.5.8's Trash dialog boxes said "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." and "Emptying the Trash cannot be completed because "<filename>" is locked. To empty everything in the Trash, including locked items, press the Options key while selecting Empty Trash". http://i.imgur.com/XFBfF.gif for the screen shots/captures of the error messages.
I tried holding Option key and emptying trash, but that didn't help/work. I used Finder to look at the files, and they had locked status. So I unlocked them which worked, but I can't delete the empty folders/directories, and these don't have locked.
What's going on and how do I empty the trash? Thank you in advance.BDAqua wrote:

Not that I saw through Terminal's ls -all and Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine. Someone told me to try secured empty trash and it did more, but not fully.
I used the administrator (sudo) account in Mac OS X 10.5.8's Terminal to delete the trash, but it still failed:

I tried deleting this on an old, updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine and it had no problems! Weird. I wonder why Mac OS X 10.5.8 failed to delete it through its Finder and Terminal (sudo rm -rf command). -
Unable to copy very large file to eSATA external HDD
I am trying to copy a VMWare Fusion virtual machine, 57 GB, from my Macbook Pro's laptop hard drive to an external, eSATA hard drive, which is attached through an ExpressPort adapter. VMWare Fusion is not running and the external drive has lots of room. The disk utility finds no problems with either drive. I have excluded both the external disk and the folder on my laptop hard drive that contains my virtual machine from my Time Machihne backups. At about the 42 GB mark, an error message appears:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "Windows1-Snapshot6.vmem" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
After I press OK to remove the dialog, the copy does not continue, and I cannot cancel the copy. I have to force-quit the Finder to make the copy dialog go away before I can attempt the copy again. I've tried rebooting between attempts, still no luck. I have tried a total of 4 times now, exact same result at the exact same place, 42 GB / 57 GB.
Any ideas?Still no breakthrough from Apple. They're telling me to terminate the VMWare processes before attempting the copy, but had they actually read my description of the problem first, they would have known that I already tried this. Hopefully they'll continue to investigate.
From a correspondence with Tim, a support representative at Apple:
Hi Tim,
Thank you for getting back to me, I got your message. Although it is true that at the time I ran the Capture Data program there were some VMWare-related processes running (PID's 105, 106, 107 and 108), this was not the case when the issue occurred earlier. After initially experiencing the problem, this possibility had occurred to me so I took the time to terminate all VMWare processes using the activity monitor before again attempting to copy the files, including the processes mentioned by your engineering department. I documented this in my posting to apple's forum as follows: (quote is from my post of Feb 19, 2008, 1:28pm, to the thread "Unable to copy very large file to eSATA external HDD", relevant section in >bold print<)
Thanks for the suggestions. I have since tried this operation with 3 different drives through two different interface types. Two of the drives are identical - 3.5" 7200 RPM 1TB Western Digital WD10EACS (WD Caviar SE16) in external hard drive enclosures, and the other is a smaller USB2 100GB Western Digital WD1200U0170-001 external drive. I tried the two 1TB drives through eSATA - ExpressPort and also over USB2. I have tried the 100GB drive only over USB2 since that is the only interface on the drive. In all cases the result is the same. All 3 drives are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I know the files work on my laptop's hard drive. They are a VMWare virtual machine that works just fine when I use it every day. >Before attempting the copy, I shut down VMWare and terminated all VMWare processes using the Activity Monitor for good measure.< I have tried the copy operation both through the finder and through the Unix command prompt using the drive's mount point of /Volumes/jfinney-ext-3.
Any more ideas?
Furthermore, to prove that there were no file locks present on the affected files, I moved them to a different location on my laptop's HDD and renamed them, which would not have been possible if there had been interference from vmware-related processes. So, that's not it.
Your suggested workaround, to compress the files before copying them to the external drive, may serve as a temporary workaround but it is not a solution. This VM will grow over time to the point where even the compressed version is larger than the 42GB maximum, and compressing and uncompressing the files will take me a lot of time for files of this size. Could you please continue to pursue this issue and identify the underlying cause?
Thank you,

How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport 2T) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus 2T)? WD drive was improperly ejected (although we did tell it to eject) and now Finder no longer recognizes it. Using MacBook Pro and I just upgraded to Yosemite before this happened. Was told at Apple Store to use Disk Utility to repartition, but it failed. It says to backup files and restore. But how do I backup files? Or would appreciate any other suggestions to repair drive.
You may drag & drop between external hds.
Should you run into trouble.
Take the exernal drive appart. Take out the harddrive. Try reading the data via a usb adapter. Put a household finan on the hd.

I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?
No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

can you buy any type of external HDD and it'll work with any mac or do you have to buy specific ones that cost like €999?
You can buy any disk with FireWire, Thunderbolt or USB. If you've got a 2010 or early MacBook Pro, buy a FireWire disk, or if you've a newer computer, a Thunderbolt disk. They'll be faster than the USB, but you can buy an USB hard disk

External Editor - New File Type
Is there a way that you can set an external editor and specify a specific file type that is not listed in the 'File Type' section of preferences.
I am working on a project for a client where I have been coerced into developing PL/SQL code. I'd like to house the code in XCode so that I can take advantage of the SCM integration and the new Snapshot feature in 3.0 as well as keep the files tied together in a project.
I have SubEthaEdit setup to manage .sql documents within finder. So I can choose 'Open with Finder' from the context menu in the Groups & Files pane and the document will open in SubEthaEdit. However, I'd like to associate those files directly with that editor in XCode so it will open the files with that editor by default. Ideally I'd like to have a text.script.sql file type that I can use for this purpose.
Any thoughts or feedback would be greatly appreciated.Rob,
I am not sure if this will help you, but you can look at the textmate editor (http://macromates.com/) in case it can do some of the things you want

I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?
Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":<br />
An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
You may need to add quotes ("") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension.

Launching external viewer per file type
From my Java program I need to launch external viewers per file type. Is there any easy way to do this?
My program may generate various output files (eg. html, txt, pdf ...etc). Once a file is generated, I want to launch corresponding registered viewer on users desktop so user can view the output(eg. for "HTML" registered web browser OR for TXT launch Notepad OR for PDF launch Acrobat etc).
I suspect that this functionality may become OS-dependent but maybe somebody knows a "pure java" way of doing this?
Even if I could do it for Windows only that'd be get me by for the moment. If somebody knows a Window's specific solution even that would help.
TIA.Actually after some more searching I stumbled upon this at javaworld.
On Windows one can execute url.dll that interpretes the given file (or URL) argument and launches appropriate viewer.
For example to launch HTML viewer you execute the following command using runtime..
rundll32 url.dll,FileProtocolHandler http://www.javaworld.comTo launch notepad you use the following command.
rundll32 url.dll,FileProtocolHandler C:\myfile.txtThought it might be useful for anybody else reading this thread... -
how can I change the desktop icon for an external hard drive. Using LaCies and Dimple hard drives.
One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way. -
Using FAT files system with External HDD in SL
is it safe to store files in an external hard drive formatted as FAT? or should i format as HFS+? Is there any possibility that OS X will damage its data?
It depends on the type of file. While loose files generally can be safely stored there, FAT32 drives can't be used to store a bootable copy of Mac OS X, applications, or content such as an iPhoto library.

Thx in advanceYes I have the same problem with a WD My Passport Essential on a 2011 iMac running Mavericks. Opening Unlock Drive I find it says 'The drive is already unlocked' but will not allow me to see the contents of the drive. Only the Smartware 'CD' image shows up in Finder. Unaccountably the same WD drive unlocks fine on a 2009 MacBook (also running 10.9) How can I 'set a breakpoint' as advised below in Terminal result...? I am worried I will accidentally lose the data on the 750Gb drive in the process of fixing the error.
Thank you for advice!

External Firewire HDD causing finder crash
I just bought an external Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB HDD. The thing is very finicky about how you plug it in and start it up, do the wrong sequence and it won't ever show up on the desktop.
When I have it plugged in via FW800 The thing causes my finder to become non responsive. When I try to relaunch it, it never comes back online. The only way out of it is a hard shutdown. The drive will work, but only for a brief time and then it will hang causing a never ending spinning beachball fail. I've been reading up on a lot of similar issues ever since upgrading to 10.5.7. I've downloaded Seagate's diagnostic utility, but its only feature is a "test" which never gets going while I'm hooked up via firewire.
As we speak I've swapped the firewire800 for the USB2 connection and all seems to be going well. What's the deal? Is this firmware hang affecting only firewire? Should I stick with the USB until this gets resolved? Is Firewire THAT much faster than USB that I'll be stuck in the file transfer dark ages until this gets fixed?no no no, usb is plenty fast enough for most poeple, i would not even worry about it, if you can get it working good on usb, go with it. I hate seagates, but thats me, the only reason you will need really fast firewire is for if you do a lot of movie/music editing or changing, and even then the only REALLY long backup will be the first one only, the rest will probably be rlatively quite short.
