File type on Yosemite iCloud drive

Hello,
before upgrading to Yosemite, I want to check what file types I can use on iCloud drive. I work a lot with Sketchup and Layout, it would be great if i could keep the files on Drive and then work on them on either my MBP or my iMac. Presumably I would need an internet connection any time I needed to work on them?
Thanks for any advice you can give, regards, Sally

You can store all kinds of documents on iCloud Drive, if you create your own folders there. You are not restricted to the predefined application collection folders. Any document on iCloud Drive will update across all your Macs.
Only packages are problematic, for example don't move iPhoto Libraries to iCloud Drive.
See this link:   iCloud Drive FAQ
Presumably I would need an internet connection any time I needed to work on them?
You can work off-line. iCloud Drive is keeping shadow copies of all documents locally stored on your Macs. You can continue to edit even without an internet connection. The changes will be updated, when you again connect to the internet.

  • Installed iCloud Drive and now can't see files on iCloud. Should I fallback from iCloud Drive to iCloud, or upgrade all my devices to Yosemite & iCloud Drive?

After installing Yosemite & "iCloud Drive" on MacBook Air, I cannot see files previously stored on iCloud.
But I can get to files on iCloud using my Macs still with old operating system (OS X 10.8.5).
I copied all files from both iCloud and iCloud Drive to thumb drives until decide what to do.

You cannot revert back to iCloud after enabling iCloud Drive on your MacBook Air.  If you want to be able to access your documents on all your Macs you'll have to upgrade the others to Yosemite and enable iCloud Drive on them too.

Why can't I see some files from my PC iCloud drive folder on my iPad?

DOWNLOAD SAFARI AND RE-INSTALL to fix maps in IPhoto Places '09  8.1.2
I too lost my IPhoto Places maps on June 2nd.  Initially I used Best Buy's Geek Squad tech support.  The second tech was able to fix the problem.  He said there was a corrupt file in Safari, not IPhoto. However, I didn't know what he did to fix the problem.
A week later, the maps were gone again.  I tried to contact the same Geek Squad tech, but no luck.  I talked to several other techs, but they could not find a solution, even though I told them about Safari.  The last tech directed me to this web page.
It was here I learned about turning the WiFi off and on.  That restored the maps to the pictures, but not the Big map.
Today, at the Apple Store Genuis Bar, I was told they were unaware of this problem.  When I mentioned that Safari was where the problem was, he suggested I download Safari from the Apple Web page and re-install.
So far this is working!    So happy all of the maps after two plus weeks.
I hope this helps others too,
    Peggy

Well I just fixed this, by sheer luck.
I did a restart of my MacBook Pro, and after it restarted iCloud was visible and accessible in Finder.
It seems all that it needs is a system restart.

No iDisk-like functionality exists in iCloud. You'll have to look elsewhere, such as Dropbox or SugarSync.

  • How can I open files in folders on iCloud Drive on my iOS8 device?

Have created folders and moved parts of my documents and pdf files to iCloud Drive on my MAC (Yosemite).
I can see the folders on my iOS device in Manage my iCloud, I can delete the folders and documents but HOW can I open the documents?
On Apples homepage I can see a simliar layout as when I log in to iCloud.com with my folders etc. plus the Apple Pages folders.
But where on my iPad / iPhone do I navigate to find the same?
Tried to login to iCloud.com on Safari on my iPad but it did not show my folders/files on iCloud Drive.

So what is the point of upgrading to iCloud Drive when there is no "Drive" on your iOs 8 device? I also added a new folder through Safari on desktop- as instructed by Apple- and I have no way of accessing it on the iPhone! This seems pretty bogus and a huge waste of time!
And... If Apple was developing an app for the "Drive" why have us upgrade to something you have no way of using?
And... I did try opening files through apps that allow it but I do not see anything.
And... Pages docs do NOT show in the "Drive" on Safari.
    WHY?

  • .icloud-drive file in root of iCloud drive folder

I have noticed a rather strange file in the root of my iCloud drive folder on iCloud.com
it is called .icloud-drive with the file extension of do-not-delete.   ".icloud.drive.do-not-delete"
    Does anyone else have this???

    Hello rhearob,
Apple did not mention or publish anything so far which indicates that it is possible to share iCloud Drive folders or to access iCloud Drive from multiple Apple IDs. As KiltedTim wrote, it could be that Apple is going to add additional functionalities to iCloud Drive once Yosemite is released, but as of today, nothing has been announced.

  • Change all icons of a file type in Yosemite?

    Hello,
I just upgraded from a early 2011 MBP running Mavericks to a new Retina MBP running Yosemite. I did not use Migration Assistant as I wanted a fresh start and instead have copied over all of my data from a clone manually. I use Parallels 10 to run a Windows 7 VM to run some software, including MS Office, etc. Since my upgrade, all of my Office file icons (.docx, .xlsx, etc.) are the generic white/gray page with the turned down upper-right corner. I set the default program for all to be the correct application within my VM, but now would like to change the file icons for all files of a type to something more meaningful. Somehow, I had that on my previous MBP, but can't remember how that happened... Without having to individually change each icon for 10,000+ files, is there an easy way to batch change all Excel file types (.xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .csv, etc.) to a single icon?
    Thanks in advance.

Same thing happening to me.  I've fixed disk permissions, for what that's worth.  Still have generic icons for office docs.  It's always something....

  • HT201104 My Numbers file not updating in iCloud drive on Imac

both iPads working beautifully, but I cannot get the latest version on my iMac in iCloud d

    Hello james beresford-wylie,
So the updated Numbers file is being updated on iCloud as both iPads are seeing it, but the Mac is not getting the new version in iCloud Drive.
My first thoughts are does the update show on icloud.com (on the Mac) and is the file showing in the Finder but pending the download.
    From
Get help using iCloud Drive - Apple Support
If you still don't see the latest changes or you see an "in-progress change" icon or the iCloud Drive icon in the notification area (system tray), try to save a new document to the iCloud Drive folder. Then check the iCloud Drive folder to see if the changes appear.
    Take care,
    Nubz

  • Dragging File on Mac into iCloud drive

Does anyone know what happens if I drag a  big file I use often on my desktop and laptop computers into icloud drive? Does this remove the file from my computer and place it in the cloud or is the copy still on my computer. My concern is twofold: if the icloud ever crashed would I lose the files and I have security concerns. Also---I'm guessing files in icloud drive do backup when time machine does its backup routine--right?

I have the newest versions on iMac and iPad, and everything is set to save to iCloud, but neither the Mac nor the iPad version save Garageband songs to iCloud. Furthermore, the way the Garageband folder shows up in iCloud, as something different from all other iCloud folders, is a little weird. It is a separate folder from all the other items (Numbers, Pages, etc. each have their own folder within one master folder, but Garageband is not in there. It is by itself, like an orphan folder. And it is empty.) Any ideas?

  • Keynote file (OSX 10.9.5) does not show up in iCloud drive

I have created a keynote presentation, using OS X 10.9.5, saving it in iCloud. The next day I wanted to continue to work on the presentation. But it does not show in iCloud Drive, whereas Keynote states, that the file is stored in iCloud Drive. That´s very annoying. What can I do?

Does iCloud maintain file versions for non-Apple file types?

  • How do I consolidate all this at this point: Icloud Drive, Itunes Match, Local iTunes Library, Local iPhoto, Local Aperture, Photo stream, Familly sharing, sharing on iOS, music sharing on iOS, music sharing on mac etc.

I am trying to grasp all the possibilities for consolidating my stuff and my family's stuff from multiple devices and multiple accounts from multiple sources  but I cant.
I have been reading many instructions and FAQ regarding iCloud Drive, iCloud Sharing, iTunes Match, Familly Sharing, file size limitations on iCloud Drive, app sharing on iOS, Backup vs Sync vs cloud sharing,  storing iWork documents on iCloud drive, storing iTunes library on iCloud Drive, storing iPhoto library on iCloud Drive, storing Aperture library on the iCloud, the Photos app on iOS with iCloud and many others.... but I feel like I need a systems admin course from apple to manage all of it.
This is what I and my family currently have:
Hardware: Multiple iPhones, Multiple Macs, Apple TV (with hard drive), Multiple iPads.
Operating systems: Everything is upgraded to the latest iOS and Yosemite.
    Libraries:
    1)  Multiple iTunes Libraries locally stored on Macs and IPhones with lossless CD music and iTunes purchased music. What I want to do:
    a) Have a main family shared iTunes library across ALL devices that contains our Lossless music and purchased music. so that it can be played across ALL   devices. With the ability to have private music for each individual (Not shared).
    b) Purchase new music and add it to the family share or purchase music and make it private (Not shared).
    2)  Multiple iPhoto Libraries macs (With photo stream from iPhones) and ONE Aperture Library on my mac. What I want to do:
    a) Have a main family shared photo library that every one can deposit to and view.
    b) Store individual iPhoto libraries on iCloud Drive(s)? So that everyone can have their own library and edit it across THEIR devices.
    c) Store and use my Aperture Library on iCloud Drive?
    Other documents:
iWork files, PDFs etc. What I want to do:
    a) Have a main family shared area (on iCloud Drive i suppose) where we can share documents.
    b) Sync private documents across ALL individuals devices (Available locally and on iCloud).
    c) Store private documents (One instance)  on iCloud drive and make them available on ALL individuals devices.
    d) Backup of local documents?
    Apps:
    iOS apps:
    a) Share purchased apps?
    b) Not share private apps.
    Storage:
What do I purchase to accomplish the above:
    a) iCloud storage for everyone?
    b) iTunes Match for everyone?
    c) All of the above?
    Conclusion:
It would be great for Apple to explain all this with all the options in one concise document instead of hunting down individual documents and sections all over the place.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hey there!
You and I are data soulmates. I have been having this trouble for a while and have yet to get my head around it. Our problem is that we've cycled through multiple macs and the "home" or "host" for all the stuff that's now been moved or moving to the Cloud is very scattered. It drives me crazy... almost to the point where I'm thinking about starting a brand-new iCloud account and beginning from scratch.
If you have any experiences or recommendations you could share about your strategy, I would love to hear it.

  • ICloud drive disk still full AFTER upgrading to 1TB storage space

    Hello,
I just bought the $19.99/month 1TB iCloud storage plan so that I can back up all 800GB of my iMac data to my iCloud Drive. However, when I drag and drop my files over to my iCloud Drive in Finder, it says disk full. Am I doing something wrong? There should definitely be more than enough room. I have also checked to make sure my storage plan was indeed upgraded correctly in iCloud management and there is definitely a full 1TB of available space.
I have even tried backing up my files to my iCloud Drive using Time Machine. My understanding was that with the Yosemite 10.10.2 update, iCloud Drive should now show in Time Machine's preferences as a back up drive option. But after upgrading to 10.10.2, I still do not see it in there as an option.
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance.
    Kit

So is there no way of not creating the shadow copy on my local machine also?
No, iCloud Drive is meant for the working copies of your documents - to store them on a central location in iCloud and update them on all your devices. The shadow copies are there, to guarantee, that you can access the documents, when you are offline.  See:  iCloud Drive FAQ
Sounds like using Time Machine to backup a single copy to my iCloud Drive would achieve this right? But as I said in my original post, I'm not seeing iCloud Drive as a back up target disk option in preferences.
Time Machine can backup your iCloud Drive, but it cannot backup to iCloud drive. Perhaps you misunderstood, what the latest Yosemite update meant for Time Machine:  (see this link:
About the OS X Yosemite v10.10.2 Update - Apple Support)
Adds the ability to browse iCloud Drive in Time Machine
This means, that you can now restore your iCloud Documents from Time Machine more easily, because you can browse them, but Time Machine cannot store backups on iCloud Drive.
