File type preferences?

What the **** happened to the importing preferences for file type?
AIFF, MP3, bit rate, etc? In 8.1.1 those choices appear to be gone from preferences and everywhere else. Apple dumbing down the program or what? Maybe toast time.

Take a deep breath and lose the profanity.
The preferences are all still there. Preferences>General. There's a button about 3/4 of the way down on the right labeled "Import Settings...."
All better now?

  • JDev 10.1.3 EA: Bug in "File Types" preferences

    Hi,
I've found a bug when using 10.1.3 EA, as follows:
    1. Yesterday, under Tools -> Preferences -> File Types I added a new File Type for files with extension ".vm" (Velocity), and I'd associated it with an HTML Source "File Type."
    2. I shut down JDev before going home.
    3. Today, I fire up JDev EA and I decide that I now want .vm files to be associated with a file type of "XML Document." But I can't, because the "File Type" drop down is grayed out, as well as the "Remove" button. I can't even remove the .vm extension to redo it!
So, now I have to either hunt around in the JDev subfolders for the file(s) where this stuff is stored as a work-around, or completely reinstall JDev. Right? User-defined File Type extensions should remain editable, unless I'm missing something here...
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
We've got a bug tracking this, but in the meantime the extension is stored in \jdev\system\oracle.idex.10.1.3.34.12\preferences.xml.
Shutdown JDev and do the following, search for the extension type in preferences.xml, there will be two occurences, delete the Item element encompasing the type and save the file. Start JDev and the file type will be removed.
I had problems getting JDev to recognize newly added types, let us know if you have any further issues.

  • Firefox will not save my "Always do this with this file type" preference.

Alright, bear with me because I am extremely new to Firefox. Anyway, when I download a .torrent file for uTorrent, it asks me the obligatory "What to do with this file type" question. Great. But when I checked to be sure it was opening uTorrent (Yes.) and ticked the "Always do this for this file type" box. Then, I clicked "OK". Awesome.
Then, after that, when I try to download a .torrent file it asks the same question again. Click click. and again. click click. and again......you get the picture. Why wont it remember this preference?

Sites override the "Always do this" preference by serving files with a special HTTP header known as '''Content-disposition: Attachment'''
You can look for this happening by installing the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3829 Live HTTP Headers] extension then accessing it from the '''Tools''' menu just before clicking a .torrent link to monitor the headers sent.

  • Application Mime File Type Preferences

    I'm stumped!
I've gone through the entire user preferences, application support files, and library files and still cannot locate which file is containing the settings for mime type application association with .php files.
I am having an issue with Firefox only downloading .php files instead of displaying them in the firefox browser. The .php files continue to be associated with the dreamweaver extension and icon and continue to to tell firefox to download instead of rendering.
I was so frustrated, I did a clean install onto another hard drive (OS X 10.3.9 drive 2)and was able to get firefox to work on the new system os. Again, I have trashed all the dreamweaver files, trashed all the firefox files and settings and even after doing a reinstall of firefox I continue to get the same issue on the older install 1 os x (10.3.9 drive 1). Drive 1 has all my precious files, years of settings and other data that I want to keep. I just want firefox to render .php pages off my local drive instead of trying to download them.
Can anyone help me find the file I need to trash to make this happen? What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    Frank Beier

File and application associations are set using the Get Info window by selecting the file and pressing COMMAND-I. Settings are controlled in the Open With section. You can also use the freeware preference pane RCDefaultApp (www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com.)

  • ITunes updates hijacking file types?

I would like for my .m4v files to play in quicktime when I open them in Finder. I can get them to do this using the "Open with: .. Change All..." option in the get info window for a .m4v file.
The problem is that every time iTunes updates it takes over the .m4v files. I like that Apple keeps iTunes up to date (8+ updates per year for the past 3 years according to wikipedia). However I wish I didn't have to run around after them reminding Finder over and over that I want .m4v to open in quicktime.
How can I convince iTunes or the iTunes updates to quit playing tug of war with my file type preferences in Finder?

I haven't upgraded in a long time so I don't have first hand experience with what you are observing. When you install a program it tells the Mac what kind of files it can open. Apparently this is overriding what you have done previously to tell the Mac that you don't want iTunes to open certain files, you want Quicktime. I haven't heard of any way of stopping this from happening or altering the records, certainly nothing easier than just changing the "open all" setting on a file again.

  • EA1: Adding file types does not work.

The File Type preferences panel doesn't seem to work.
    1 Go into Preferences
2 Click on File Types in the tree
3 CLick Add, enter an extension and click on OK
You get the stack dump below in the console.
The extension you just entered goes in a 'DeployableTextNode' with a tick in the Open with SQL Developer column.
But the check box in the bottom panel is Unchecked and all the other fields in bottom panel are disabled (Remove button; File Type drop down; Content Type Radio group).
    4 Click on OK
5 Go back into Preferences | File Type.
The first time I did this, the extension I just added was gone.
Going through it again for this post, they are all gone, including the pre-supplied ones.
6 Exit SQL Developer and go back in and they are back.

  • How can I open a cfm file in Dreamweaver CC using a Mac? Added to the Extensions.txt. Getting error adding to preferences-- file types.

I am trying to open Cold Fusion files using Dreamweaver CC. We've never had a problem with the versions before the Cloud. My co-worker can open using a PC, but I'm using a Mac. I can connect to the server and see the files, but when I open, it opens the file in text editor. I have tried adding the extensions to the Extensions.txt file (they weren't there previously), editing the MMDocumentTypes.xml file (the file type WAS in that file), adding to the Preferences-->File Types/Editors (I can add the extension, but when I try to choose Dreamweaver CC as the editor, I get an error "You cannot use Adobe Dreamweaver CC as an external editor. Please choose a different application."). When I right-click the file, I do not see an "Open With" option, only "Open".  Does anyone know of another trick that could make Dreamweaver CC more than an HTML editor for Mac?  I cannot us CF Builder - no approval for loading the extra files server-side to use that IDE.

  • Setting file type in preferences

I seem to be unable to have PSE 9 set the file type. When I change the preference it alwasy goes back to never. What am I doing wrong.
    Bob

I take it you have a mac and you mean that the file extension preference keeps setting itself to Never?
This is a known bug, caused by merely opening the Saving Files preferences in PSE 9. There are two workarounds:
    1. Just type in the extension manually, or
2.Quit the PSE editor, then relaunch it while holding down command+shift+option. Keep holding the keys till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do. Then never open the Saving Files preference window again.

  • Setting software preference for file types

    Hi all
Can someone please tell me how you set a preference for different file types? For example, I want all .avi files to play using VLC player and not Quicktime. However, my computer automatically wants to use Quicktime. How do I change this? I have looked in Preferences and couldn't see an option.
    Thanks
    Steven

Select an .avi file via the Finder and use Get Info for the file.
At Open With, select the VCL player and below "use this application to open all documents like this", select Change All.

  • Cannot disable 'File Types' associations in QT Preferences

When I open QuickTime Preferences, then choose File Types from the Browser tab, it is impossible to UNCHECK any of the already-associated file types. QuickTime seems perfectly happy to let me check any of the types that are not already checked and re-assign their association to QuickTime, but not the other way around. The ones that are checked will not change when I click on them.
What is the workaround for this? Thanks.

could try deleting the file QuickTime qtp
Another will be created when the QT control panel is
    re-opened

If you have QT pro write down the Registration info

    remain
There's no indication that anything's corrupt. Everything displays fine when I open QT normally; it was only when I opened it as Administrator that the file associations would not show up in the window.
This whole problem appears to entirely by design, nothing to do with an error or corruption. QT appears, with this latest version, at least in Vista, to not allow the user to change the file associations that are already assigned to QuickTime. I just wanted to know if anyone knows a workaround for it. If somebody using Vista could try to reproduce the problem, then we could know for sure.
    Thanks.

  • Setting Bridge's file type associations in Preferences

    Hello,
I am using Bridge with Windows 7 and I'm trying to change the file type association for a jpg from Photoshop to Office 2015. When I click on Browse, I find myself looking in Program Files/ Program Files (x86) but nothing seems to be a form of Office 2015 that will work. I see a folder for Office 2015 and inside is an .exe file, but that doesn't do it.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

You are looking for an application, and ALL applications in a Windows environment have an .exe extension.  There's no other kind.

  • I want to edit the application associated with pdf files, but the pdf file type is not available on the Applications tab under edit preferences. How do I add file types?

I am running Firefox 5.0 (Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0) under Kubuntu 11.04.

Thanks jscher2000, I tried your suggestion, but no joy (as expected). None of the extensions were .bin, and in fact, I can't find a single listing for handling the .bin extension in the entire (unfiltered) list.
That's why I'm so confused. Where is Firefox getting the name "VLC.bin (default)" from in the first place?
cor-el, I checked out the link that you posted.
I don't have an entry for "browser.download.pluginOverrideTypes" and the entry "plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types" was empty (default setting).
My bad, but I forgot to mention in my first post that I had also tried renaming the mimetypes.rdf file in my "Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxx.default\" to .old to no avail.
Firefox created a new, almost empty file, but it didn't change the behavior for .bin files. I removed the new file and put the old file back in place after determining that clearing the file did not help, since I am otherwise happy with my current file-type options.
However, since the option to "Always perform this action" is grayed-out, I am looking into the possibility that the website is sending a misconfigured MIME type or is assigning "Content-Disposition: attachment" to the download. What's odd, though, is that I've never had problems getting binary files from the site in the past, and the problem started when the VLC player was installed.
I'll post back after I check into the server header data.

  • Where are fIle type / MIME preferences?

I have run into a bit of a problem. I can't force Safari to download a certain type of file instead of trying to view it as text.
There is a Flash-site that links to a nice file I want to download. The file is "rare" and possible misunderstood by the server. It is displayed in Safari as text, even though it clearly is a compiled file. Since it is a Flash-site, I can't use my usual quick fix of alt-clicking (opt-clicking in pure mac-speak) on the link.
I have not been forced to add a file-type handler for years and can't find it. It was there in Netscape 4
If anyone wants all the details this is the site I am trying to download from:

    Hi Martin,
Have you tried just letting the file load and then selecting 'Save As...' from the File menu?
Instead of saving it with the default .txt extension just remove that to have it end with .mxp.
Of course I don't have anything to actually test if the file works or not though... but I'm sure you'll let us know
