File types won't associate with Photoshop CS2

I have installed Photoshop CS2 as a part of the Video Production Suite. I am having difficulty associating my image file types to PS CS2. Windows defaults to its image viewer and will not change in the Folder Options in Windows. How can I do this within Photoshop?
When I installed from the DVDs I was not presented with the File Association Window, as the the Help file indicates.

check edit preferences in bridge. there's some file handling prefs in there. set cs2 to handle the images that you want it to.

Can't Access Supplementary Editing with Photoshop CS2

I was a user of Elements3 for a long time mainly because I liked that the catalog's "edit with" feature worked with Photoshop CS2. I recently got a new PC with Windows 7 so I could not install PSE 3. I downloaded PSE9 trial version to see if all worked well and it was worth the purchase. The problem I am having is that I cannot seem to get my Photoshop (CS2) as a supplementary editing option. I don't know if this is right, but from the little bit of research I did it thinks I am trying to add Elements again because the Elements program exe file starts with "Photoshop" so when it reads the Photoshop.exe file it thinks it is a duplicate. I tried creating a copy and renaming the Photoshop.exe file which almost worked. Elements allowed me to select it as a supplementary editor and afterwards Photoshop was an edit option. I tried to edit a photo with it and while the program opened, it then got an error message and ended up closing before the photo came up for editing.
Can someone give me a fix to use Photoshop as my editor. I really liked how I could edit in PS and keep a neat catalog of edited versions with the Elements versioning capability. If I can't do it I probably won't end up purchasing the PSE9 program.

I have the identical problem trying to use Photoshop as the editor from Photoshop Elements 11.
Please can some-one let us in on the secret of how to get PSE to recognise that a full Photoshop is installed.

Memory Problems with Photoshop CS2 - RAM not being utlized

I am having memory issues with Photoshop CS2. I have a G5 dual 2.5 with 8 GB of RAM. PS CS2 keeps hanging on me when I'm doing fairly routine tasks with a fairly complex low-res .psd file. It includes several nested layers...etc.
I noticed while running activity monitor that Photoshop is utilizing a very small percentage of my system's RAM. Approximately 475 MB of the total 8 GB RAM and 1.07 GB of harddrive space for the scratch disk. This seems odd as there is over 6 GB of free RAM while this is happening.
I've uploaded a screen capture of my activity monitor while Photoshop is hanging. Note that the CPU percentage is above 98%. That's an awful lot of RAM going unused.

Any idea what's going on here? Could it be a corrupt file or font?

Doesn't completely make sense as I've been using this particular machine for almost two years without any problems working in much more complex and much larger high-res .psd files. I doubt that's what the issue is here. I'm starting to think the file became corrupted...
Hard to believe that Adobe/Apple haven't issued a fix for the RAM issue yet.
I also run routine CRON maintenance using Cocktail and have no other issues with any software....

Mac Mini G4 with Photoshop CS2

I have a Mac Mini G4 512 MB of Ram. I want to get Photoshop CS2. Has anyone experienced slow response or issues with Photoshop CS2 on a Mac Mini G4?

I would recommend that you get some more memory on that Mac Mini. 512Gb is a small memory configuration for Photoshop on ANY machine. I run 2Gb on my dual proc G5 and it runs great. I imagine that as long as you don't try to process large files with it, you might be ok.
According to the Adobe site, you will experience slow downs on the Intel Macs due to the need to run emulator along with Photoshop. However, they say it will work. Don't expect to see a universal version of PS any time soon either. They say it will wait for the next major release of PS, 12-18 months out.
Anyway, good luck. I'd be interested in hearing of your results with PS on the Mini.

when the software comes up initially I get a message that says “could not complete your request because of program error”. Hitting OK allows me to continue using the software .
When I try to activate a function using CTLR or ALT keys I get this message “required application failed to load and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application”. This causes the application to abort.
Reloading my CS2 continues to generate the same messages when I depress the CTLR or ALT keys.

Your original copy is obsolete and Adobe is offering a free replacement you are entitled to. Download and use that and that should clear it up for you.

Why cannot I open NEF files from a Nikon D600 with Photoshop CS5?

When I try to open raw NEF files from a Nikon D600 with Photoshop CS5 I get: "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw"
Nikon D600, however, is among the camera models listed as compatible with Camera Raw CS5.
I have never had any problem in Camera Raw CS5 and older versions with raw NEF files from a Nikon D80 camera.
Is there an update for CS5 to make it compatible with Nikon D600 raw NEF files?

CR2 files won't open in Photoshop CS2

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT and my Photoshop CS2 software won't open these images. CR2 is listed in the Raw file format but selecting Raw doesn't open them. I have downloaded the latest Raw update. I am using windows. Can anyone help me??? Many thanks, Patricia

If you have CS2 the latest version should be ACR 3.7.
ACR 4.x is only for CS3. If you download the 3.7 ACR and install it correctly ( be sure to follow the instructions precisely!) you should be OK.

"open file" Not working with Photoshop CS2

I have a script that I wrote a while ago to take a series of individual bitmaps and compile them into a strip for access inanothe application. Script used to work well....
I tried to use the script today but ran into a brick wall when trying to open files from within the script.
below is an example of a script that will not work at all,

I normally pass the function a variable for the filenames...but the above script should work fine.. but flatly refuses to !
Below is the Error returned.

Perhaps your script used to work under pre-OSX10.5 (AppleScript 1.x) but now fails under OSX10.5 (AppleScript 2.x)?
If so, the most likely cause is the drastic change in internal text handling between them. In AS2.x, internal text is Unicode only, which might prevent PSCS2 from resolving 'file path_string' descriptor (when path_string is assumed to be plain 'string', not Unicode text).
Try the following code instead -
tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS2"
open ("AV:logo:rot0001.png" as alias)
end tell
Or -
set a to "AV:logo:rot0001.png" as alias
tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS2"
open a
end tell

PSCS5 won't associate with .jpg files

Last night and this morning I installed PSCS5 on both my laptop and desktop after removing PSCS4. I tried to open a .jpg attachment to an email on my desktop and received a message that it couldn't find an application. I have tried right-clicking on a .jpg, selecting Open With.. I get various suggestions (Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer, etc.), but not Photoshop CS5. When I go to Choose Program, Photoshop CS5 is not listed under "Other Programs." When I browse to program files\Adobe\Photshop CS5 and choose photoshop.exe, and press Open, the choice does not stick (i.e. This has no effect). I have the same results on both computers. I tested the Beta, but don't remember this problem, but it may not have appeared since I had CS4 on the machine. Has anyone else experienced this and is there an answer to it?

Check the optional plug-ins on the install disc. Failing that, download an alternate image viewer/ conversion program and convert the file.

Using Elements Organizer with Photoshop CS2

I have grown comfortable with Photoshop Elements integrated organizer and have upgraded to Photoshop CS2 and instead of using the CS2 file manager would like to continue to use the Elements organizer. The problem Im having is when I edit a photo in CS2 and save it, I have to go find the edited file in Elements organizer and add it manually to the organizer, where if I edit in Photoshop elements, the file is automatically added in the organizer for me. Is there something I can do to make this more automatic when I edit in CS2?

I have all the current updates for both products, but other than that, I've
done nothing special.
For regular file types (jpg, psd, etc.) the handshake goes without a hitch.
Raw files act a little quirky. Raw files do get passed from Organizer to
CS2 and they open in camera raw. But, I've found that if you don't press
the "open" button in camera raw, CS2 will give you an error message that
says it couldn't receive the document from "Photoshop Album". Click ok on
that message and you get another that says it could not complete the update
from the Photoshop Album command because of a program error.
If, I press "open" in the camera raw dialog to edit in CS2, all is fine. If
I make changes and save, Organizer pops up a message saying I've returned to
Organizer and gives me an option to add to a version set or keep it
separate. It adds to the version set fine. But, since I only selected save
in CS2, it remains open there. If I make further edits to the open file and
save, I have to manually update the organizer thumbnail. On the other hand,
if I just click close and respond yes to the "save changes" message , I get
two popups -- one labled "edited file from Photoshop" and "new edited file".
If I click "ok" on both, I get two entries in the version set. (I've done
that with a regular file and I only get one popup.)
So, there you have it. Ordinary files work as expected. But, raw is quirky.
Raw files work fine if you continue to open in CS2 from camera raw and only
save once.

Using PSA 3 SE with Photoshop CS2 or PSE2

I have PSE2 and the full monty Photoshop CS2. As I want to create slideshows with my own background musice, transitions, etc I downloaded PSA 3SE hoping that this was the software I needed. However, in its Read Me First file it says that in order to use the full functionality for slide shows (music, transitions, etc) I need to upgrade to PSE2. But I already have that, and CS", installed but I cannot seem to integrate them with PSA 3 SE.
Any tips on what I need to do would be much appreciated. Adobe won't give me any email help/advice and I refuse to pay them $39 for a call that may not even help me!

It says upgrade to PSE 3, which includes Organizer, which is the highest functionality version of the PSA technology.
Having said that, none of these programs do a great job of slideshows.
My suggestion is go buy a "real" slideshow program. There are lots available. I like the product at http://www.wnsoft.com ProShow Gold is well thought of.

Removing obsolete file type associations from "Open With" menu

Ever since I removed VMWare Fusion 3.x from my system, I've been unable to remove the Bootcamp file type associations that it created. For example, if I right-click on a PDF and choose Open With, this is a partial list of what I see:
Adobe Acrobat Pro (default)
Adobe Distiller (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
Adobe Fireworks CS4
Adobe Fireworks CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
Adobe Illustrator CS4
Adobe Illustrator (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
...and on and on and on. 17 additional entries for Fusion for PDS's alone. This junk is driving me crazy.
I've tried rebuilding the Launch Services database with MacPilot and Onyx (the recommended fix that I've found on the web), but the entries still are there even after restarting Finder and rebooting my iMac. I'm at a loss to figure out how to get rid of these.
Can anyone help me?

They are stored in the LaunchServices database. You can give this a try, but no guarantees. If you no longer use VM Fusion then I suggest following the information below on uninstalling software.
Rebuild LaunchServices Database
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;
Press RETURN.
Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:

CleanApp

Uninstaller
Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

LV 8.2 won't associate with VIs and uses 7.1 RTE?!?!

I'm in the process of creating a new exe of our project. A strange thing keeps happening and I don't know what's wrong. I had LV 7.1 installed on the machine, as well as LV 8.2 to transition to the new version. I created an .lvproj and built a new .exe of our application. Lo and behold, it flashes the LV 7.1 flash screen and then asks me to select the VI I want to run, when i select the main VI of the application, it simply gives me an Error 9 message and says that that vi is compiled in version 8.2 of LV and won't open. I tried right-clicking on a vi and trying to force it to associate with 8.2, that didn't work. I uninstalled 7.1 and the 7.1 RTE entirely and when I try to run my LV 8.2 built exe it STILL manages to use the 7.1 run time from somewhere.
After that I tried to re-associate them with 8.2 yet again to no avail. When i run my exe it just tries to open them in the non-existing 7.1 RTE and re-associates them all with 7.1. Please help, i think this is a bug.

Thanks for the reply. I do understand how bizzare this must seem to you, I had the same reaction. I know perfectly well the behavior of LV built exe, been using it for 5 years. The problem here is the bizzare behavior of the .exe (any in fact, i've built several test vis and exes) on 3 different machines.
I'll try to explain what's happening:
1) I create a new project
2) I add my Test.vi to the project
3) I set my Test.vi as the startup vi (Test.vi simply calls my main vi via the vi reference).
4) I build the exe and execute it
5) Upon execution, an LV 7.1 splash screen pops up for a brief second and I get an Open VI file dialog box asking me to select a VI I want to open, all the VI files inside that window take on the appearance of LV7.1 icons, instead of 8.2. If I try to select a VI from that window, I get LabView load error 9: VI version (8.2) is newer than LabView version (7.1).
I'm used to that error after you recompile a 7.1 vi to 8.2, but I don't even have LV7.1 installed. It seems like the exe is trying to use LV7.1 RTE to run itself instead of 8.2. I though I have 8.2 RTE automatically installed by LV Dev, but I guess not since it doesn't show in Add/Remove Programs menu, but it DOES show up in MAX under software, go figure. I wish I could get someone in NI to look into this. I've never had a problem like this, it is happening on 3 PCs here and is taking up a lot of work time. I have source code I can send as well as a short video of what's happening on my machine.

Many problems with Photoshop CS2

Hi,
I noticed many failure on CS2 softwares, i didnt upgrade to CS3 and iam wondering if it it worth the investment looking how much messy CS2s is to my projects so far. I thought they brought in CS2 to solves the many glitches in CS, but...
1 - Illustrator CS2 doesnt not export to gif. I am working on an e-commerce project having to customize hundreds of gif pictures. I am more fluent with Illustrator than Photoshop plus the many vector tools makes it more useful for this kind of project.
- This forces me to try some complicated workflow where i do the design first in illustrtor then export to .psd so i can simply save out as gifs. This is where i found many other problems:
2- When i open these psd that took so many hours to design, i found out photoshop interprets everything poorly. It messed up all the dimensions and sizes.
3- I set document sizes in Illustrator to small sizes even if i imported in a large picture that i use as background (moving and rotating that background allows me to create many variations of my background keeping the same tone), but the exported psd didnt respect the doc settings and instead of cropping brings in the entire file resolution.
4- I dunno if any of you guys have tried to do anything like selecting many layers and rescale them in photoshop? Or simply select a text layer and resize it in photoshop? really painy. Such a breeze in other applications like flash or illustrtor appear so heavy in photoshop, i ended up losing all the harmony of my works, if not my sanity.
Please if someones have ever gone thru all these nightmares before can you explain me how you found way around it would be very nice and helpful.
