File used by OSX
When I clip on an Mpeg movie I get a message that the file cannot play because it is being used by the OS X operating system. What does that mean and how do I get rid of it so the movie will play.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Select the text on the line below by dragging across it. Don't include the blank space at the end of the line. Only the text should be highlighted.
xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V, then press the space bar.
Now switch to the Finder and and select the item(s) in question. Drag into the Terminal window. More text will be added to what you entered.
Click in the Terminal window to activate it, then press return.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear. Test.

I have a Fuji X-Pro1 camera. I use Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 I have Photoshop CS5. How do I open its RAW files?
Since photoshop cs5 can't use past the camera raw 6.7 plugin and that camera requires at least the camera raw 7.1 plugin, you could use the 8.7.1 dng converter
to convert the files to dng copies, which then photoshop cs5 should be able to open.

If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)? And would it ask me if I want to initialize (thus erasing it) or eject the hard drive like the OSX 9 did?
I was trying to follow this thread because I was curious about the OS 9 installation - until I realized you have another thread going about the very same subject, albeit with a different subject line.
FWIW: it is best not to double post - things get far too confusing after a while.

Have cleared space, checked Window - Doctor and server has green light. Mail Activity shows 47 emails waiting to download, iPad and iPhone download them all OK - no extra big files stopping the download either. In the past, quitting mail has worked, but not today... Any suggestions?

Drag and drop not working when uploading file using safari
why i cannot drag and drop any file when using safari , and what happens the file auotmatically open while i need to upload it only , extra for that , i cannot write any remark or fill a space while using website related to my work.
my work is to upload drawing files using dwf file to a website so the other parties can review and give me review , and then i reply to the remark at the same place and make meeting through the same site.

latelly i installed win7 only to use it for that website , and iam now changing from mac to win whenever i want to work , this not acceptable to me because it is waste of time beside i like the mac and it working with other application but not for safari.why ?
I'm sorry, but every OS is different. You cannot expect all features of one to be in another. Or alternatively, for similar features, be done it the exact same way.
It looks to me after a quick google search that winexplorer is basically the moral equivalent of the mac's finder to present the file system in different ways. The OSX Finder also has alternative views of the file system, i.e., icons, list, columns. Experiment with the list and column views and see if one of them are more to your liking.
As for winexplorer on the mac. I don't know if this simulates it or not but there is a program called Macintosh Explorer so check that out as well.
And finally, in the end, as I said in my earlier post, no matter what, nothing on the mac is going to change what I believe you think you can do and drop a file on a browser window and expect it to upload. -

Time Machine backup disk size - total capacity of disk or just files used?
Hi folks,
After upgrading to Leopard, I'm trying to set up my Time Machine. My main HD is 175 Gig and all the OS and other files take up 37 Gig of that. The drive I want to use for Time Machine (a spare internal hard drive) is a 75 Gig drive with 74 Gig of space available. Time machine says this drive is too small to use.
According to the Time Machine documentation, Time Machine takes the _total size of the files_ to be backed up and multiplies that by 1.2. So in my case, since the total files on my 175 Gig drive take up 37 Gig, then I would need only 42 Gig for my Time Machine back up. So, in theory, my 75 Gig spare drive should work just fine.
The problem is that Time Machine is taking the total size of the entire HD and using that to calculate the size of the back up drive, which would be 210 Gig. Does anyone know why this problem is occurring? It seems like Time Machine is not calculating the needed back up disk size properly and is incorrectly including the unused disk space on my main HD.Not sure exactly, but your drive really is too small. Yes, 37 gb plus workspace would do for your initial Full Backup, but subsequent incrementals could fill it up pretty fast. That would depend, of course, on how you use your Mac -- how often you add or update files of what sizes.
If you change your habits and, say, download a multi-gb video, then work on editing it for a few hours, you could eat up the remaining space very, very quickly.
Just to be sure, how are you determining space used? Via right-click (or control-click) and Get Info on your HD icon?
Also, do you have any other HDs connected? If so, exclude it/them, as TM will include them by default.
Three possible workarounds:
First, get a bigger drive. HDs have gotten ridiculously cheap -- 500 gb (or even some 1 tb) for not much over $100.
Second, use CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or a similar product instead of TM. CCC is donationware, SuperDuper about $30, I think. Either can make a full bootable "clone", and CCC has an option to either archive previous versions of changed files or delete them. CCC can be set to run automatically hourly, daily, etc. (I suspect SD can, too, but I don't know it's details). An advantage is, of course, if your HD fails you can boot and run from the "clone" until you get it replaced, then reverse the process and clone the external to the internal.
Note that these will take considerably longer, as unlike TM, they don't use the OSX internals to figure out what's been added or changed, but must look at every file and folder. In my case, even smaller than yours, TM's hourly backup rarely runs over 30 seconds; CCC's at least 15 minutes (so I have it run automatically at 3 am). And, if you don't keep previous versions, of course, you lose the ability to recover something that you deleted or changed in error, or got corrupted before the last backup.
Third (and NOT recommended), continue with TM but limit it to your home folder. This means if you lose your HD, you can't restore your whole system from the last TM backup. You'd have to reload from your Leopard disk, the apply all OS updates, and reload any 3rd party settings, then restore from TM. As a friend of mine used to say, "un-good"! -

I think it is your path problem. (Are you able to save this file in UI there?)
Check:
mFile = new File("/var/New.indd");
mFile.isValid;
You can't go forward until above == true;
You could check how your system records a path using this in ESTK:
mFile = File.saveDialog();
select any file and check ESTK console.
Script is creating a new File object with path you can see (not saving anything), so do it same way.
If you will pass above with true save a doc using:
mDoc.save(mFile);

i have an old pc running on windows xp to which i downloaded elements 10. i recently bought a nikon d3300 and am shooting RAW. is there a way to open the RAW files using elements 10?
The 8.4 dng converter won't work on windows xp, but will on windows 7.
The newest version of the dng converter that works on windows xp is 8.3

There have been some reported problems with Apple's servers.
Try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
I assume you are trying to update via wifi. You can also connect the iPad to your computer and update using iTunes.

Cannot open eps files on maverick oSX with CS6
I cannot open eps files on maverick oSX with CS6. AI and FW just hang and need to force quit to continue.
I have tried using FW but no success. I can open old files but no new ones (existing on my computer) since upgrading to Maverick on a Macbook air.
The files will open in Photoshop (as raster) and are able to be placed in ID.
No Plugins in AI or FW.
Latest Java update.If you can't open them, but place them, then the files might have been created with a newer version (like CC) or they might just be (partly) corrupt.
You can try and create a new Illustrator file and place the EPS in it (embedded). -

PHB files are proprietary album files used by some of our programs, namely PhotoBase. Albums do not store your images. They serve as links to files stored on your computer or removable drive. If you delete the original file, the thumbnail in the album basically becomes a dead link. Hello out there...
Right now I'm trying to add subtitles to some movies that I have downloaded. Unfortunately, all of the subtitle files are .smi and for some reason the disk mounting image fails after downloading and the files are worthless. I can't get them to open in Quicktime, Real Player, or the DIVX player.
Could anyone please lead me in the right direction here? Is there someting I should know about downloading and opening .smi files in Mac OSX? Is it different than for Windows perhaps...Hi soxcoverfeet,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
The .smi extension is an indicator for a Self-Mounting-Image from OS 9. As a first step try to open it with disk utility. For that just drag the smi-file over the disk utility icon.
If it did not work, try this: click the .smi-file and type Apple-i to get the information window. There you should see a checkbox that allows you to define it as Classic-file. Check it so that the file will be opened in Classic and there it should expand correctly. In case you deleted Classic you will have to reinstall it.
