File Vault Won't Decrypt - operation fails in final minutes

I'm trying to turn off file vault. File vault said I didn't have enough room on my hard drive so I followed Apple's instructions to go into safe mode, make a sparse disk image on an ext drive and then drag and drop the encrypted home folder into the disk image. At the last moment I get an error code -50 which says the operation couldn't be completed b/c of an unexpected error. I've retried this on other ext. drives, USB2 and FW just to eliminate some variables. They all failed in a similar manner
Next I cloned the entire HD to the ext. Then I booted from the ext and tried to turn off file vault that way. The clone went fine, and I went through the steps to turn off file vault. File vault started to unencrypt then with about 10 min until finished I get the same -50 error.
Is there anything left to do here? Is there some file that is tripping the process up?

  • File vault won't enable

I inadvertantly turn off file vault in Security & Privacy preferences. I want to turn it back on. I clicked on the Turn On FileVault and got a message to restart. I did that multiple times, an endless loop. What to do?

Thank you Thomas, that hit the nail right on the head and your solution serves wonderfully - even more-so as one can have multiple secured file systems if required, although only the one will server me fine.
Kappy, this is my situation: I have used Macs for eons and upgraded bit by bit from one machine to another over the years. I currently use a MBP 17" for my main work and travel machine, at home I have an iMac 24" with bootcamp and a Mini on the Home Theater. Both the MBP and iMac run Parallels and have the mandatory Office basics on them. The iMac is the version with the Nvidea 9000 something or other card and in Bootcamp, running XP, it can handle pretty much any PC game that can be thrown at it. This is required with youngsters in one's house - and, well, can't say I don't enjoy a romp around some of these virtual worlds meself.
I synchronize these two using Synchronize X Pro.
At work I need to handle documents that need to be secured. However I have all my photos and audio library on both these machines as well as a NAS at home. I have tons of personal and family files. I do not want to simply encrypt my home directory, it would take an age and is counter-productive. But I DO want a location where I can store documents securely. The "sparseimage" file that Disk Utility allows me to create fits the bill perfectly. By NOT storing the password in the keychain, anyone attempting to mount the sparseimage file - even assuming they knew what it was - would be stymied by my cunningly complex and confusing password. And this assumes that they get by my equally complex login password or gain access to my HD using some sneaky side-entry.
So in the horrendous event I lose my MBP, I can feel fairly comfortable that my work files are safe.
    Thanks for your help.

  • File Vault won't stop.  Makes loud noise

When I set up my IMAC G-5 originally, I selected to us File Vault, since I didn't know any better. I haven't opted to have space recaptured for a long time. Last night when asked, I said yes. After an hour of seeing the small circle turning on the light blue screen, the scren went black and a loud noise began, possibly the hard drive turning at full speed without doing anything. That was over 11 hours ago, and now I don't know what to do. I have all id's and passwords, but haven't backed up recently, so I don't want to turn off the machine unless that is the only option. My email address is [email protected] if you respond by email. Thank you

I finally decided to turn off the machine anyway, and nothing was corrupted. I'll now backup the machine, turn off file vault, and recommend to my friends that it is risky to use.

  • CANNOT FREE UP SPACE! File Vault won't turn off!

My computer is full! Even though I've deleted lots of large files, it will not free up space. Legacy file vault is turned on but I cannot turn it off due to lack of space to do so. It is asking me 300GB to turn it off! My HD is 320GB!! crazy system!
    PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ASAP!
    Thanks.
    Alessandro

    hi there,
have you emptied the paper bin in the lower right corner of your screen? Normal deletion moves files there, disk space is not freed until that paper bin has been emptied. To empty it, do a right click on the paper bin and select Empty.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris

  • File Vault Won't Work

    Hello;
I just tried to activate File Vault, and it gave me this message:
"There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on File Vault: Turning on FileVault requires an additional 13.4 GB of free disk space on the volume "Mac HD 1". Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need."
But I have almost 80 GB's of free space on my hard disk. What is going on and how do i fix it?
    Blessings,
    Damon is Tired

    Hi again Damon,
I agree with you—it's absurd. But the truth is that FileVault is unreliable and risky. If something in your home folder becomes corrupted as it is now, removing the troublesome bit is easy. But if something causes the sparse image/bundle that FileVault creates to become corrupt, you can lose everything.
The potential of losing your password is a side issue (but a big one). Users are flawed, but so is FileVault.
Just out of curiosity, I asked a former Apple Genius friend of mine what he thought of FV. (I realize that Geniuses aren't infallible, but y'know...) He said that he wouldn't recommend FV for any reason. But if you don't believe him or me, do some Google searches and see what you come up with.
Ultimately, it's your decision of what to do with your data. I hope you understand that I'm not trying to tell you what to do; I just want to give you (what I feel is) the best advice I can.

  • Cannot add file to Documentum. "Create" operation failed for object id=null

Upgraded ro Frame 11 recently and now I cannot add a new document to Documentum. I get the following error.
I still have Frame 10 installed and can check in the document with it, but Frame 11 does not recognize it as a FrameMaker file.

A version of the CMS interface became available later that resolves this issue. Unfortunately, I don't see a link to it.

  • TS4235 Am I able to disable File Vault 2 at boot ?

I was doing a software upgrade and made an error that has me needing to use boot keys, to fix or perhaps to re-install the OS (10.7). The boot keys are unavailable because File Vault 2 is in operation. Can't locate my recovery key either. Thanks for any information on getting round this if possible ..?.

You cannot disable FV2 unless you have the password. If you have forgotten the password and you stored the recovery key with apple you can get it from them. If you didn't take that option when you set up FV2 you'll never get into that disk. That's what it was built for, and it was built pretty well.

  • Can't turn file vault off

    file vault won't turn off
says it doesn't have enough memory
anyone know how i can turn it off
    w/o deleting files?
    i have 80 GB HD w/ 20 GB available
and 100 GB backup external HD which I backup my HD with using SuperDuper.

    The message is as follows...
There isn't enough space on your hard drive to turn off File Vault
Turning off FileVault requires an additional 4073.8 GB of free disk space to create an unencrypted copy of the home folder. Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.
(I assume it doesn't really mean 4073.8G - from reading another post this seems to be the number it chooses when it can't figure out how much space it needs)

  • File Vault erase?

When you turn on File Vault on and it erases your files to be copied and encrypted, does files you previously erase get copied to the encrpted new files?

No, if you deleted them previously, File Vault won't touch them; they are already gone. But if you are concerned that the file might still have residual data on the drive, then yes, it might be possible for someone to use a data recovery program to read parts of the disk and find files that were erased before File Vault was turned on.

  • "The attempted operation failed. An object could not be found" error when double clicking on an ics file

    Operation System: Windows 8 Pro
    System Type: 64-bit Operating System
Office: MS Office Professional Plus 2013
I am getting "The attempted operation failed. An object could not be found" error when I double click on an .ics file to an appointment to my calender. My outlook.com account's data file is set as default and this error only occurs if
that is the default data file. I thought that maybe my profile is corrupted. So, I opened up a new profile with the below steps and only add my outlook.com account there:
1-) Open up the Control Panel and go to Mail section
    2-) Click "Show Profiles"
3-) Click "Add" and give a name to your profile.
4-) Configure your outlook.com account (with Auto Account setup, not manual steps)
5-) Finally, set that profile to be used always.
Then, I opened up the Outlook 2013 and clicked on the .ics file to add that appointment but got the same error.
Is this a known issue or specific to me?
    Thanks!

yes, I have the same problem.
The workaround of saving the ICS file and then importing it into the current calendar
    works,
    but the ICS calendar
displays in other section, NOT in the section of my old events.
    why  ??

    4. Set up new profile with my email address. email address tested well. Run Outlook. loads as outlook data PST

    5. Set up another new profile with my email address and a named pst.  Run Outlook under that Profile -
comes up with newly named pst and the gmail addrress pst (although I can't figure out where that pst is located. Will not let me use email address as default Profile.  Tried different approaches and still ended up always with the gmail address pst.  Deleted

    H,
Since upgrading Windows server 2008 R2 to Server 2012 Standard edition, we get this repetitious critical error in the event log:
    Event 1001
    Op Code NLS initialization
The NLS operation failed because the registry key Control Panel\International\User Profile cannot be opened. Error code is 2. Error message: The system cannot find the file specified.
We originally found that the regional date settings after changing them in regional settings (DD/MM/YYYY) and they did not inherit properly from the upgrade but they are ok now.
I've looked at HKCU\.Default\Control Panel\International and nothing looks obviously wrong. Country codes, time & date formats are correct.
How do we ascertain the  cause of this error and the specific registry key that might be problematic?

    Hi,
This could be caused by firewall rules or security softwares.
    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/242579-44-hkcu-control-panel-international-opened
And in addition, the fix is worth a try.
Nothing happens when you double-click "Region" in Control Panel

  • The export operation failed to create an image file

I've been experiencing bizarre behavior when attempting to export images to my Usb-connected card reader. After reading some threads on this form, I was convinced that my reader was defective. Same problem on a brand-new reader.
The specific behavior was as follows: I attempted to export roughly 150 custom-named 500 KB image files to the memory card. The last 15 or so failed to transfer and I got the message, "the export operation failed to create an image file for the versions identified below."
Trashing VP list didn't help. What did was changing the custom name. There was nothing particularly unusual about the original custom name and the new one was virtually identical. After changing the name, the export worked without a hitch.
Has anyone experienced similar behavior? Any ideas what's going on?

problem was that the NEW card reader was faulty as well. My luck!

  • Time Machine restore of File Vault encrypted user failed: Login failed due to an error.

    Hello everyone,
I did regular time machine backups of a File Vault (version one) encrypted user folder. Now I needed to restore a few files that have been deleted unintentionally. Since single files can't be restored from a File Vault encrypted backup time machine told me that I must restore a complete backup from a certain time. I did that. Time machine quited to copy at about 25 percent and rebooted. Everything was looking good until I entered my password for the recovered user. Then I got the answer:
"Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred"
    And now?
I tried to restore some other backups, none was working. I copied the relevant .sparsebundle file out of the backup folders and tried to mount it. Didn't work. It says "not recognized". Then changed it's owner to root and tried again, the same answer. I tried to repair it by using hdiutil but it also says "attach failed - not recognized".
Apple, I am asking you: Are my data lost?
    Anyone, please provide help.
(Apple, it's more than a shame what you are providing for the safety of a user's data!)

Try Repairing the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If/when you get this sorted out, strongly consider switching to File Vault 2.  It works much better, especially with Time Machine.
Or, if possible, only encrypting a few sensitive items, per Protecting confidential documents in a secure disk image.
