FILE WONT OPEN IN PHOTOSHOP CS3... Gives error not compatable with this version
i have read through several other threads an nothing suggested seems to work
when i attempt to open a particular psd it tells me file cannot be opened because it is not compatible with this version of photoshop. it was built in cs3 and worked like 5 hrs before i tried to open it to work on it didn't save it when i opened it the last time(as in i just opened it on my pc to show some one n closed it ) i tried opening it in everything suggested it doesn't work. PLEASE help it was hard work ...
How are you saving these files (i.e., where did the file that won't open come from)?
If you're saving a .psd with a NEWER version of Photoshop, then in the newer version you should go into Edit - Preferences - File Handling and change the field Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility to Always if you want to be able to pass the PSD files around to multiple (older) versions of Photoshop.
If you're getting the files from others, you need to ask them to make the above change.

I downloaded it and looked at it. Even Graphic Converter can't recover any pixels or meaningful data, just some general information:
In my experience, if GraphicConverter can't open it, nothing will.

Photoshop CS3 gives me an error "not compatible with his version.." when trying to reopen files
Photoshop CS3 gives me an error-
"Could not complete your request because this file is not compatible with his version of photo shop" when I try and reopen psd's or layered tiffs,
it usually happens to files over 1gb in size,
I can open them up in illustrator but not in photo shop,
this is very annoying, it also happened today in CS2"could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop"
We've just had te same problem with a PSD file, it could not be opened by Photoshop CS nor CS3, and ImageReady showed the layers empty. So we downloaded The GIMP to give it a try. It took a extremely long time for The GIMP to open the 500MB file, but it did, without throwing error messages. Some layer masks were interpreted incorrectly, and the color profile tag was ignored. But at least the project could be saved to a new Photoshop file, which was opened by Photoshop without error messages except for the color profile tag. -
Help needed, encountered this error while opening psd file.
the psd file is created in CS5, tried to open it in CS3 because it said "...the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop", i got the same error message in CS5
tried to open it at Firework CS6 (got the idea from Re: Recovering Crashed PSD file) but it give me error message "Could not open the file. An internal error occured"
is there any way to recover the file?

Cannot open file, Photoshop is not compatible with this version of photoshop. 2 weeks
This has been a problem for almost 2 weeks now. Cant save any work in photoshop, files are unretrievable once closed. I get the same error message. I spent all of last week online with Adobe Tech support, screen sharing conference etc, now iMac isnt working properly. AAARRFGGHH.
Same prob on iMac and new Macbook pro
Last week Adobe via screen share uninstalled and re-installed Photoshop, took a few hours and still nothing. I have lost many hours work here. Cant reach Adobe and I am really pissed off. Cant reach a human via the support emails they aren't working. I have asked to speak to a Programmer or Manager for help with this and I have received none!

I should add that last night I tried to contact Adobe to see what the hold up was. I went and tried to open up the case file (No it had not been withdrawn and was still active), but it would not open. So, I started up a new support file with a whole new case number, I received an email this morning from Adobe saying that I would have to communicate with them through the original case #. Went to respond to this email today and the NEW case file had been withdrawn.
Yes, I have read all the user forums on this stuff for months, NO I am not using any Anti Virus stuff, No I did not upgrade my Macs at the time of the prob appearing! Thanks

Photoshop CS2: "file not compatible with this version of Photoshop" error
So, I've been working with Photoshop for almost 20 years now, and lately I've been getting this error message on occasion (but not on every file) when I go to open a file I worked on just yesterday: "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." I just worked on it yesterday in Photoshop. The file was saved as a PSD, and when I attempt to open it through Painter IX, that program tells me that it's not a Photoshop document. Why can't I open this file anymore, and why is it giving me this error message when I don't have Norton AntiVirus installed, and my 'maximize PSD and PSB file compatibility' is set to 'always'??
Does anyone have an idea on how I can open my file? How can I get around this, and how do I prevent it from happening again?

Photoshop document created in current version of PSCC2014, now will not crop, resize, etc without throwing compatibility error.

You may be able to open the flattened composite or the embedded JPEG preview of your file in Adobe Illustrator, GraphicConverter (Mac only) or some such application, but your layers will be gone.

Save with Maximize Compatibility in CS6.
Choose Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling (Mac OS).
From the Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility menu, choose any of the following:

Then re-save your file so it can open in CS2 -

Computer crashed yesterday and now I am getting "File is not compatible with this version of Photoshop" error and unable to opening in PS CS5 or Fireworks CS5. Any ideas? Also tried the PS repair download and would rather not pay $30 to find out it can't do it. Seems like a common error but in all of the forums I haven't found a solid answer. There are 3 possible reasons for that error: file corruption on disk, more than 8000 layers in the file, or a layer somehow went over 30,000 pixels in a PSD file (which would be legal in PSB, but not in PSD). -

Used to get this on occasional files using CS2, have now started getting it on CS3 files. The only way to get round it is to redo the work!
Am using Photoshop CS3, V.10 on a G5, OSX 10.4.11. Which is connected to a PC network.Ran into the same message on files created by one of our designers. His computer needed a "cleansing" to stop corrupting files. Files were actually being corrupted locally, so it wasn't only a server issue...at least in our case. One thing that we did that "sort of" worked...we transferred the file to a PC and ran a shareware utility that repairs PSDs (Advanced PSD Repair Software). It said it repaired the file successfully, BUT it separated the files into a couple of hundred individual documents. Each layer and layer mask was a separate file. I didn't see any setting to recover as a composed file so I guess this is just how it works. If your file is not heavily layered and complex, I guess this might work for you, but, like I told the designer, I ain't goin' in there and reconstructing your layers. =) I know this doesn't help if you don't have access to a PC with Photoshop loaded in it, but thought this might help some poor soul along the way. I can't open the psd file I did yesterday! It says that the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop. I worked in a CS6 version but also tried opening in a CC but nothing happens. Help

Photoshop never crashed or anything.
I was working in my school's mac but running windows, and the file was being saved in the school's network not on the computer. I thought it had been saved and I also copy and pasted the file in my hard drive to guarantee a copy but none of the are opening.
The file size was appox. 1giga

I created an image in Photoshop and saved it as the PSD file. Now when I try and open it it says it is not compatible with my version. How could this be when I created it in this version?
That depends on why it won't open. Most of the time it means the file is corrupted and unlikely to be recovered. If you saved it right after adding or copying a LOT of layers - then it might just be the layer limit and we can attempt to recover it.

In my experience, if GraphicConverter can't open it, nothing will.

CS6 file "not compatible with this version of Photoshop"
We are using Adobe Creative Suit 6. Yesterday i've created a file, and today i cannot open it with any software. (Bridge shows the thumbnail but the file is corrupted.) I get the "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop" error. The file contains multiple layers, without any masks. Originally it was a NEF file (Nikon raw). I used vanishing point, because its an interior photo. (it doesnt relevant for the problem) I have an earlier version, where the vanishing points are defined, but the textures are missing. Main question is, how this can be??? I worked on that version for more than 2 hours. The file size is small, it's only 133.579.959 bytes (133 Mb). The image is 4288 x 2848 px, 240 DPI, RGB 8-Bit, Fogra39 ICC profile. The computer is up to date, nor the hw or the softwares are corrupted. The file saved locally, so it's not a network problem. I saved the document, and left the machine for about 15 minutes, then i went back, so the save had to be complete. (on SSD it took about a couple of secs) The biggest problem is, i have to work with a large amount of photos in Photoshop. But after this i have some bad feelings about this job. We have to create these PSD files both for ourselves and for our client for further use. (It's a huge furniture factory) The hardware has 16 gigs of RAM with an Intel i5 operating system Windows 8.1. Any ideas? (ps.: i didnt' find PSErrorlog.txt file) Oh i almost forgot. After installing CS6 my Adobe Acrobat Pro stopped working in about 2 weeks... So. The job is waiting, but we cannot wait for a long time, we gonna loose our biggest client because of a sw error?
You write this is not compatible with this version. Did you install all updates and did you update the camera raw too?

I'm a beginner in PS. I was edit TIFF file in PS. Size of file is 21x89.1(22.6 MB). Then suddenly power - cuted. But after 5 min turn on PC and PS can't open my TIFF file.
Error is (could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop)
What should I do, how I open this TIFF file? I realy need to open this file?
Please help me...
Regards, Suvd.SOut of curiosity, were you actually saving the file at the moment the power cut off, or had you just saved it?
If not, I don't understand the reason the file should have become corrupted. If it was successfully saved on disk from the prior save operation, just shutting off the power on Photoshop would lose your current edits, but the file should still be intact.
