FileLock problem

I'm new to the NIO API, so this may be a silly misuse of it (I did search the forums for an answer here but didn't find one). What's wrong with the following code snippet?

But this is all in a single instance of the JVM i.e. there is only one process. Is there something I'm missing about the use of FileLock objects and the mixing of Input and Output streams?

Hmmm, well, I was trying to write some code that would gain exclusive access to a file such that no other VMs could access the file until I was done with it (each of the VMs would go through the same set of locking code, so they would follow the same protocol - attempt to gain an exclusive lock on the shared file and then perform a set of read/write operations on the file once the lock had been obtained). I thought I could lock the file and then perform an arbitrary set of read/write operations on it within the VM that obtained the lock until the lock was released. Doesn't look like that's possible using this methodology. Is there any other way to accomplish this? I guess what I'm really looking for is some cross-VM synchronization that doesn't rely on creating a temporary file, since that is a bit unreliable.

  • Java.nio, FileChannel, FileLock conundrum...

    Hey all--
    I want to have multiple java machines on multiple clients to access a singe file. I want the first java machine to access it to lock the file so only it can write to the file. Other machines may come in later and read it.
    Here's the trouble. If I simply access the file as, say, a RandomAccessFile in "rw" mode. All the clients may read and write to their hearts desire without throwing and exception.
    So I found that if I obtain a FileChannel from the RandomAccessFile, I can tryLock(0,Long.MAX_VALUE,true) to obtain a Shared Lock.
    Here's the trouble. A client can obtain the lock and prevent others from writing to it successfully while allowing them to read from it...great!. HOWEVER, even though that particular client has the lock, the client can't write to the file either!
    myRandomAccessFile.write() methods NOR myRandomAccessFile.getChannel().write(myByteBuffer);NOR
    FileLock myFileLock =myRandomAccessFile.getChannel().tryLock(0,Long.MAX_VALUE,true);
    FileChannel lockedChannel = myFileLock.channel();
    lockedChannel.write(myByteBuffer);all of these throw a java.io.IOException "The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file"
    I'm only running one process and one virtual machine. I also checked to make sure myFileLock != null and that myFileLock.isValid()==true So does obtaining a filelock also prevent my OWN program from writing to the file?! If so what's the use of a filelock? Because in order to write to the channel upon whose lock I have, I'd have to release the lock which would allow any other clients the ability to write to it concurrently.

    I know they say it's platform dependent. But what's weird is that I know native Windows and native Mac apps (the two systems this program will run on) both allow the type of lock I describe. Yet, at least on Java on Windows, this locking system doesn't work.
    "FileLock protects against other locks."
    So this would be great too! It would at least let me sense when another jvm from a different machine was accessing my file and I, as the programmer, could say if someone else has a lock, my app won't do any writing.
    The problem is that the only locks I appear to be able to get are 1) exclusive lock that boots everyone from coming within a Gigabyte of the file... or
    2) a shared lock that let's no one write including the locker of the file.
    Even if it doesn't let me have a "everybody read, only I write" lock, I wish it let me have a lock that just said, "someone's currently accessing the file besides you"...then I could fill in, "so don't do any writing."
    Which brings me to what you said that's kind of exciting "Also be aware that you can lock bytes beyond the end of the file:"
    So if I lock a RandomAccessFile only at the byte Long.MAX_VALUE-1, other's would be able to see that lock, even though that aspect of the file on others file systems didn't even exist? Because if so, you've answered my question. That would let me write and read the rest of the file but still have other apps detect whether there was a lock on the file or not.
    I suppose I could also just lock the first byte of the file and ask the same question. I'm going to play around with that and see if it works.

  • FileLock not working properly in Solaris

    I tried to obtain the lock of a file using
    fileLock = fileChannel.tryLock();
    In Window,
    First called fileChannel.tryLock() on a file and obtained the lock successfully
    Again i tried to obtain the lock of the same file using fileChannel.tryLock() & it returns null (means that lock is already obtained). No problem in windows.
    But In Solaris,
    First called fileChannel.tryLock() on a file and obtained the lock successfully
    Again i tried to obtain the lock of the same file using fileChannel.tryLock() & it again returns the lock successfully which is not the expected behavior. Why is it so?

    If you are callinf FileLock from within the same JVM, yes it will succeed. The API docs themselves say that it is use for use between processes, not within the JVM, as it is the OS that determines it's behaviour, and on many OSes it is perfectly legal and valid for the same process to request a lock on a file that it already holds.

  • Problem with a concurrent file access

    Hi,
    Here is my problems: I have a java program that reads a file in memory, do a few changes and re-write it. It looks like that:
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(tabFilePath);
    BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(fis));
    //Put it in memory and do the stuff...
    reader.close();
    FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(tabFilePath, false);
    BufferedWriter writer = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(fos));
    // Write it back
    writer.close();But, the program is launched a lot of time in the same time, so sometime it crashed with a NullPointerException during the reading part because, (I presume) another process write the file in the same time.
    What should I do?

  • FileLock Doesn't Work Across Network

    I have found a case in which FileLock doesn't work. I'm trying to use FileLock to prevent two instances of the same process to run simultaneously on different machines (or the same machine) on the network. I actually saw two processes, one on each of two Linux machines obtain a lock on the same file at the same time.
    Can I be sure that FileLock is calling fcntl and not flock (which wouldn't work over the network)?
    Is there any way to fix this or get around it??

    Have each machine check some central point (or all
    other nodes) for the existence of a server. Of course
    there could be some synchronization problems, so you
    might check several times. Even if the remote
    interface is successfully exported, have it check one
    final time to ensure. To be paranoid, you could have
    it check often.We have a strong requirement not to have a central server, which has made coding this a headache. It would be pretty unacceptable to query every machine on our network (most of which probably aren't running any related process at any one time and are probably running other jobs) any time someone wants to start one of these processes on any machine. (There could be hundreds of these processes running at once with different parameters; it's just that no two with the same parameters are allowed to run at once. Each of these will act as a separate RMI server so other processes can communicate with the running process for other purposes besides just determining whether it is running.) A registry can only contain objects on one machine, right? Or can I somehow bind everything on the same host even though that's not where the objects are?? I am already writing the name of the successful host for one parameter set to a file and barring other processes with the same parameters from executing if looking up the process on that host succeeds. This works in most cases, but there is a race condition if two processes start around the same time and both read the file before either has written its host name there. That's why I'm trying to use a file lock on a different file so the read-bind-write sequence happens while the file is locked.

  • A problem with threads

    I am trying to implement some kind of a server listening for requests. The listener part of the app, is a daemon thread that listens for connections and instantiates a handling daemon thread once it gets some. However, my problem is that i must be able to kill the listening thread at the user's will (say via a sto button). I have done this via the Sun's proposed way, by testing a boolean flag in the loop, which is set to false when i wish to kill the thread. The problem with this thing is the following...
    Once the thread starts excecuting, it will test the flag, find it true and enter the loop. At some point it will LOCK on the server socket waiting for connection. Unless some client actually connects, it will keep on listening indefinatelly whithought ever bothering to check for the flag again (no matter how many times you set the damn thing to false).
    My question is this: Is there any real, non-theoretical, applied way to stop thread in java safely?

  • A problem with Threads and MMapi

    You can also try to provide a greater Priority to your player thread so that it gains the CPU time when ever it needs it and don't harm the playback.
    However a loop in a Thread and that to an infinite loop is one kind of very bad programming, 'cuz the loop eats up most of your CPU time which in turn adds up more delays of the execution of other tasks (just as in your case it is the playback). By witting codes bit efficiently and planning out the architectural execution flow of the app before start writing the code helps solve these kind of issues.

  • J2ME problem with threads

    Hi all,
    I would like to ask you for a help. I need to write a small program at my university. I started to write a midlet which function would be to countdown time for sports activities. I woul like to start a new thread - the one that counts down - and at the same time make the main thread sleep. After the "countdown" thread finishes, the main thread wakes up and waits for user input. The problem is that when the "countdown" thread finishes his work, I've got Uncaught exception java/lang/NullPointerException. error and the midlet halts.

    Your Licznik class has a member m of type monitor, which has not been instantiated (in other words is null) hence, when calling m.put() you get NullPointerException. Please also mind, that using Thread.sleep(1000) is not an accurate way of measuring time.
    If I may, please use recommended for Java class naming conventions - some of your names use lower case, while other don't which is confusing to the reader.

  • Problem with threads within applet

    Hello,
    I got an applet, inside this applet I have a singleton, inside this singleton I have a thread.
    this thread is running in endless loop.
    he is doing something and go to sleep on and on.
    the problem is,
    when I refresh my IE6 browser I see more than 1 thread.
    for debug matter, I did the following things:
    inside the thread, sysout every time he goes to sleep.
    sysout in the singleton constructor.
    sysout in the singleton destructor.
    the output goes like this:
    when refresh the page, the singleton constructor loading but not every refresh, sometimes I see the constructor output and sometimes I dont.
    The thread inside the singleton is giving me the same output, sometime I see more than one thread at a time and sometimes I dont.
    The destructor never works (no output there).
    I don't understand what is going on.
    someone can please shed some light?

  • Problem with Threads and a static variable

    I have a problem with the code below. I am yet to make sure that I understand the problem. Correct me if I am wrong please.
    Code functionality:
    A timer calls SetState every second. It sets the state and sets boolean variable "changed" to true. Then notifies a main process thread to check if the state changed to send a message.
    The problem as far I understand is:
    Assume the timer Thread calls SetState twice before the main process Thread runs. As a result, "changed" is set to true twice. However, since the main process is blocked twice during the two calls to SetState, when it runs it would have the two SetState timer threads blocked on its synchronized body. It will pass the first one, send the message and set "changed" to false since it was true. Now, it will pass the second thread, but here is the problem, "changed" is already set to false. As a result, it won't send the message even though it is supposed to.
    Would you please let me know if my understanding is correct? If so, what would you propose to resolve the problem? Should I call wait some other or should I notify in a different way?

    Thanks DrClap for your reply. Everything you said is right. It is not easy to make them alternate since SetState() could be called from different places where the state could be anything else but a status message. Like a GREETING message for example. It is a handshaking message but not a status message.
    Again as you said, There is a reason I can't call sendMessage() inside setState().
    The only way I was able to do it is by having a counter of the number of notifies that have been called. Every time notify() is called a counter is incremented. Now instead of just checking if "changed" flag is true, I also check if notify counter is greater than zero. If both true, I send the message. If "changed" flag is false, I check again if the notify counter is greater than zero, I send the message. This way it works, but it is kind of a patch than a good design fix. I am yet to find a good solution.

  • Problem with threads running javaw

    Hi,
    Having a problem with multi thread programming using client server sockets. The program works find when starting the the application in a console using java muti.java , but when using javaw multi.java the program doesnt die and have to kill it in the task manager. The program doesnt display any of my gui error messages either when the server disconnect the client. all works find in a console. any advice on this as I havent been able to understand why this is happening? any comment would be appreciated.

    does not work.
    When using javaw, make sure you redirect the standard
    error and standard output streams to file.

  • Problem with Threads and "plase wait..."-Window

    Hi everyone,
    I have a problem that I'm not able to solve in any way... I have a time-consuming task (a file decryption) which I execute in a separate thread; I've used the SwingWorker class, like suggested by sun-tutorial, and it works right. The problem is that I have to wait that the decryption have finished before continuing with program-execution. Therefore I would like to display a "please wait"-window while the task runs. I've tryed all the possible ways I know but the problem is always the same: the waitWindow is displayed empty, the bounds are painted but the contents no; it's only painted when the decrypt-task has finished. Please help me, I have no more resources....

    Maybe you can try setting the priority of the long-running thread to be lower? so that the UI will be more responsive...

    First, Thread.sleep is a static method, so you don't need to create a Thread object to use it.
    I think the problem is due to the fact you don't preverify your midlet.
    More over, you don't need to double post your question.

    I have a thread that chooses paths for a Travelling salesman problem, it then calls a TSPdraw class and passes it the path, which the class then draws. the problem is when i have two threads it creates two windows but only draws a path in one of them. any ideas where i`m going wrong

    Are you using swing components? Swing isn't threadsafe. If you have multiple threads that want to update your UI you need to use the SwingUtilities.invokeLater(...)or invokeAndWait(...).
