Filemaker database transformed to an alias on an XServe Raid

Over the weekend, I lost a Filemaker database from our XServe Raid file storage. In its place, I find a 5MB alias by the same name. The size of the alias suggested that something was strange about it, and sure enough, I can see much of the data using cat or pico; but when I double click the file, it searches for the database as if it WAS an alias.
Filemaker won't open it of even select it.
Is there a way to convert it back to the original file or recover the data? (I have a backup so this is for future reference.)
Any ideas as to how the file would have become corrupt - someone copies a real alias of the file back to the Raid drive, replacing the file with an alias?
Thanks

I found the answer in Filemaker itself. When you save a file it gives you a hint at the bottom of the dialog box for several different platforms!

  • Oracle BI connection to Filemaker Database

    Hi all,
    At work we have OBI 10.1.3.3 up and running without any problem. It connect to an Oracle DB (10gR2).
    I was wondering if any of you might know if it would be possible to connect Oracle BI to a Filemaker database instead of an Oracle DB (because we are running many things on Filemaker over here).
    I tried it several times, using ODBC, but never really got it right. A search via Google also did not give me any useful answers.
    If any of you guys (or girls) would know if it is even possible to connect OBI to a Filemaker DB and if so how it is done, I would be very happy.
    Thanks and greetings

    Thank you very much. It still took me a while because the exact way to do it differs a lot depending on which Filemaker version/ODBC version, but I now have a working ODBC connection to Filemaker.
    Another little question:
    Does anyone have any experience in importing Filemaker tables into OBI Administration? I can connect to the database, Administration sees the tables when I do File-->Import-->From Database, but when I import a table, no columns are recognized (while in Filemaker, the table has 10 columns). I only get the table name without any columns (or data) into it. Any ideas on how this may come?
    Kind regards

  • Extensibility API Hook for Database Transformation

    I'm extending my entities in designer and would like to know if designer 6i provides any features that would allow me to programmatically hook into the database transformation wizard so that I may enhance the generation of my tables.

    Hello again Jonathan,
    Option 1 is the longest workaround: I wouldn't follow
    that one myself! :-)
    Option 2 is the popular choice. Many users amend such
    attributes using specifc scripts against the Designer
    Repository API after performing the transformation or
    generation.
    Unfortunately, we do not support the third option. The
    TAPI etc generate code out of Designer, so it's easier
    to hook into that using your custom scripts outside of
    Designer, then reverse engineer your changes back in
    (for example).
    The Database Design Transformer is an internal utility,
    which generates just database design meta data from the
    entity/relationship definitions.
    We tend to restrict access to such internal utilities,
    e.g. from a position of Support etc. Unfortunately, we
    therefore currently do not plan to change this.
    I have asked a colleague of mine to look at yours and
    another similar one and hopefully offer more help. You
    can find the Repository API guide here on the Designer
    Documentation pages, which should also help to define
    the relevant parts of the API you need for your script.
    FYI, the other post referred to above is:
    Database Design Transformer
    Hope this helps.

  • Which form would work best with a Filemaker database? PDF or HTML? and can we use a submit button to do this?

    We are looking at developing work forms for a project that will use a submit button to send the data from the form to a Filemaker database. My question is can this be done with a PDF or do we need to convert it to a HTML form?

    The architecture is not submit form - database, not exactly. It's submit form - web app - database. The crucial thing is the web app, perhaps one of CGI/PHP/ASP/others... FileMaker Pro seems a slightly unusual choice for a web back end, but there is a FileMaker Pro Server product. (Regular FileMaker is out of the question).
    So, you can have a web app which takes HTML format submits and updates a database. What about PDF?
    * PDF can submit the same format as HTML, so the same backend can work
    * PDF can submit other formats, FDF or XFDF. The web script could handle these.
    Frankly, if HTML is an option I'd go with HTML. There are many important compatibility issues with PDF forms, since so many browsers now do not use Adobe technology, and have their own. In these alternatives, form support goes from nonexistent to flaky, via badly broken.

  • Port Mapping and Having Others See My Filemaker Database!

    Hi Group. I am very frustrated and new to this so any help would be appreciated.
    I have Airport Extreme (the one that came out about 2 years ago), and was told by Filemaker Staff to do port mapping on this router, using 16008 to 16018 in the public port mapping which I did. No luck. Nothing is viewable remotely.
    Then turned on Personal Web Sharing. No luck.
    Then an Apple guy suggested in port mapping, instead of putting 16008-16018 as"public ports", I should put this number as private ports and put the recommende Filemaker 590 as the public port in the port mapping section.
    Still no luck. I can see the Filemaker database just fine when I add localhost:590/fmi/iwp, but each time when I had a friend try to use the router IP address 67.161.74.142:590/fmi/iwp, still there is nothing of it that people can see (not found message).
    I have Comcast service as my IP and don't know what else to try? Help!!!
    Thank you all.
    Cheerios
    mac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Cheerios,
    I'm having the same difficulty (and the same discussion with the tech people at FM). I've tried to map the ports (16008-16018) on my airport extreme (sounds like a similar model to the one you have), but when I do a port scan the ports are not listed.
    Did you ever figure this out?

  • How to use Filemaker database as datasource of ODI 11.1.1.5 for migration

    Hi Everyone,
    I am very new to ODI... and i have been assigned a work to migrate data from filemaker(10) database to Oracle 11g database by using ODI 11.1.1.5 tool.
    Is their any way to add Filemaker(10) as datasource in ODI..IF their is any possibility pls respond with step by step procedure..
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards
    Sandeep

    Hello,
    Your filemaker install should have come with a jdbc driver (.jar file). You'll need to check your filemaker pro documentation to confirm. Once you have the file, place it in the ODI/oracledi/agent/drivers folder where your agent lives (also place it on your client if you want to use the local agent for testing). You can then create a custom Technology in the Topology tab in ODI.
    There are many options in the Technology definition which you will need to figure out based on what filemaker pro can handle and how it processes queries. Once the technology is created, add a Data Server and Physical Schema as you would any other technology. Then, build the model, datastores, interfaces, etc. just like any other tech.
    Hope this gets you started.
    Thank you,
    Michael R.

  • Database link with the alias and full description in the connect string

    Hi,
    i have created database link with alias in tnsentry and full description
    and suppose i have removed the tnsnames.ora file what will be the impact on the database link that is whether database link will work or not i am sure db link created with alias won't work and how about db link created with full description and which one you prefer
    Thanks

    # Parameter file initora for Database prd
    ### Global database name is db_name.db_domain
    global_names = TRUE
    db_name = prd
    db_domain = world
    # TNSNAMES.ORA for prd ###############################
    prd.world = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP) (Host = 100.10.100.1) (Port = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = prd) (GLOBAL_NAME = prd.world)
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)))
    Our database link points from the local database test to the remote database prd. Therefore we need the global database name for prd. Ask the remote database administrator for these information or connect to prd and execute the following query on prd:
    SQL> select GLOBAL_NAME from GLOBAL_NAME;
    GLOBAL_NAME
    prd.WORLD
    CREATE DATABASE LINK prd
    CONNECT TO system IDENTIFIED BY system_passwd
    USING 'prd';--- alias
    so the connection description will be ---select ename from [email protected]

  • Upload picture from database, transform picture in FLash

    Hi, all.
    I just want to do a test: I made an swf file that is to be
    embedded in an html web page. Inside swf I want a picture to be
    upload from database ( for customized purpose ), say ASP, or XML.
    And new picture will replace that old one inside swf. Further more,
    e.g. I upload just a picture that is a piece of tile. When it
    appears in swf, it should be tiled 5 by 5 and transformed for
    perspective. Is that possible with AS? if yes, could anyone offer
    help? And how to write interface code -- ASP or xml communicates
    with FLASH, to upload picture from database? Thanks.
    -percy

    probably but i'm not sure what you're trying to do. you can
    certainly tile the uploaded and then loaded image into a 5x5 grid.
    this is easy.
    and you can distort that grid in various ways including ways
    that make it appear the 5x5 flat sheet is rotating in three
    dimensions. this is not so easy but can be done using someone
    else's code.

  • Filemaker database into illustrator via XML possible?

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm new here and also new to XML, i have been trying to look into ways of getting a filemaker information automatically into illustrator through XML. I've searched all over the net for any information on this, but found nothing. I was wondering if you guys knew anything about it or maybe where to start/look.
    The problem is filemaker saves the xml file in way that illustrator doesn't understand and i don't know how to convert the file for illustrator to accept it.
    Thanks.

    We moved the repository to Oracle RAC recently. The syntax to switch to the new databasecluster was something like this:
    lh setRepo -tOracle -ujdbc:oracle:thin:@//dbcluster1.domain:1521/service_idm.oradb.domain -Uwaveset -Pwachtwoord
    For the 'lh setRepo' command the old database had to be up, and we had to use the old ojdb5.jar. After that we switched to ojdb6.jar.
    One of our resources is a database table with HR data in the same database. The following Database Access Parameters work for us:
    Database Type:      Oracle
    JDBC Driver:      oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
    JDBC URL Template:      jdbc:oracle:thin:@//%h:%p/%d
    Host :     dbcluster1.domain
    Database: service_idm.oradb.domain
    Port: 1521

  • FileMaker database connection via Internet

    I want to be able to connect to a FileMaker Pro database that I can keep on a Mac connected to an AirPort Express. The AirPort is connected via Ethernet cable to a Hughes HN7000S satellite modem (my only Internet connection). Can another Mac using another Hughes satellite modem connect to the server Mac? The idea is to exchange data from that single database so the files on both computers can stay synchronized.

    Do I need Remote Desktop to accomplish this?
    No. ARD is for remote control, observe and management of netwoked Macs. It does not do file synchronization.

  • How can I teach Spotlight to search FileMaker databases?

    Any trick? Workaround? Hack? ...?

    Afraid you are out of luck until Filemaker does a couple of things that would make a Spotlight search possible--they first have to change the program itself in the way mail was changed, so that the databases aren't simply gigantic files, then write an mdimporter to search whatever thingies they come up with.

  • Just updated my MacBook Pro to 10.6.8 and now my Filemaker 11 databases (.fp7) do not view properly on my desktop.  Is this a java issue?

    Hi,
    Wondering if anyone knows what's going on with my Filemaker Database that will not view properly on my desktop after upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6.8 on
    my MacBook Pro.   Is this a Java issue?  The data is all there but all I see is blank boxes when I open or click on a specific area in the database.
    My Java version is SE 6 1.6.0.37-bo6-434.

    Let me understand:
    - you have purchased named canon, which is conencted to your PC running windows xp
    - downloaded driver for win xp, and canon works fine
    - canon is connected to that PC via USB
    - that Canon is also activated as network printer, by allowing print sharing in windows; how did you set that option?
    - now, you are in Mac OS x 10.6.8, downloaded Canon driver for Mac OS X, installed it, detected printer on the network, printer was installed; was it detected as attached to that PC running win XP? or not?
    or you set canon by being connected to your mac directly via USB?
    Now, there are some questions you should answer as some details are missing, and your initial text is not clear. Can you print if Canon is connected directly to your mac? did you try that? if not, do it before answering.

  • XNET Change Database Keep Alias

    I have a need to allow users to change a database file used in an XNet database at run-time.  My intention was to start by deleting a database with a constant name something like "XNet Database".  If this alias doesn't exist then the Remove Alias will return an error which I just clear because I don't care.  Next I use the Add Alias and set the database name to "XNet Database" using the new file the user provides.
    Then if the user chagnes the database file to a new one, my software performs a Remove on "XNet Database" and then an Add using the new file.  The problem is after doing the remove and then add, all references to the "XNet Database" will be for the first file, not the second one the user choose.  If I close the software and re-open then it will use the new alias.  So is there a way to force a close of a database in the software, so that I can use the same database name, but assign a new database file?
    I also tried generating random database names.  Something like "XNet Database %d" where %d can be a random number.  In my code I still remove all aliases, then add an alias using the new file the user selected.  The problem with this is after doing this 7 times I get the following error:
    Error -1074384592
    NI-XNET:  (Hex 0xBFF63130) Too many open files. NI-XNET allows up to 7 database files to be opened simultaneously. Solution: Open fewer files.
    So this confirms my suspicions that the database is still in memory, even after performing the remove alias.  How can I force a close of a database, so that I can allow my users to use a new database file?
    EDIT: okay so I missed the Close Database Polymorphic.  Doing a Close All before the remove seems to fix it.  If I don't close all and just try to close that one database it doesn't work.  In my situation I think I can live with just closing all.

    Hi,
    On the original instance, do:
    $ sql
    SQL> connect as sysdba
    SQL> spool filenames.txt;
    SQL> select * from dba_data_files;
    SQL> select * from v$logfile;
    The list of datafiles and logfiles for all the tablespaces should be in 'filenames.txt'.
    $ sql
    SQLDBA> connect internal;
    SQLDBA> startup mount [DBNAME];
    SQLDBA> ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE '<old path>/filename' to '<new path>/filename';
    In order to change the Control File, Take Current SPFILE Backup, Shutdown the DB Modify the Parameter Files (your Control Files). Start the DB, and perform the Above. !!
    Coming to your Second Question, If you are using the DBCA, you have the Option to Select the Appropriate Paths, while in the process of DB Creation, at that time you can specify.
    Else
    If you are creating DB manually, then can specify the path while you creating your DB.

  • Can I run a filemaker pro database in iCloud

    can I run a filemaker database in icloud

    Though its true you can host a Filemaker Pro database on iCloud, I did something which might be interesting or valuable to you.
    I made a database with all file containers stored outside the database.  The result is a lightweight database that links all images/pdf/etc to a path in the same context as the database is stored.
    I used then Dropbox and I can access the database from multiple machines, though not edit/add information at the same time.  Its even posible to open the database on your iOS device and see changes, etc, with the last stored database on Dropbox.
    I know this wont work for anybody, but it did for my girlfriend who stores data at work, and later review it at home.
