Filename Extensions When Saving

I recently had a system crash requiring that I start over from scratch. I was on 10.8.2 before the crash, and am on 10.8.2 after restoration.
Prior to the crash, when I saved a document the Save dialog included a check box at the lower left that read "Hid File Extension." Checking this box, of course, hid the filename extension while unchecking it added the extension (naturally).
After restoration, when I save files, that box is no longer there. The filename will only save with our without the extension depending on how the Finder setting for extensions (Finder > Preferences > Advanced) is set.
I want my files to show extensions, but not my applications. The Finder preference is unchecked which leaves old files alone (Get Info > Name & Extension > Hide extension is unchecked in the old files), but new files won't show an extension, and without the check box in the Save dialog, I can't easily add one.
How do I get that check box back?
Thanks!

Are you looking at the expanded Save dialog? Click the triangle button next to the file name entry box.

  • Saving attachments on Snow leopard mail loses file extension when saving over an existing document

Saving attachments on Snow leopard mail loses the file extension when clicking on an existing file to copy the name. Is there something I can switch on in the preferences to fix this?

I work for a publishing company where our clients send their copy to us in Word documents. We might have several versions sent to us before the final version comes in.
It is instances like this where we want to overwrite a document on the server with the most up-to-date version (which is usually named differently to the original file). We really don't want to clutter the folder with lots of different revisions. The quick way to do this is to click on the document we are replacing (this copies the document name). Previous versions of OSX Mail used to keep the file extension but Snow Leopard seems to remove it.
It's annoying as there is no particular logic to this. We just have to manually type ".doc" at the end of the document.
Incidentally, this happens with any attachment file type.

  • Firefox doesn't include PDF extension when saving pdf doc

Problem .. FireFox strips PDF file extension from file name when application option "Portable Document Format (PDF)" is set to "Save File" and when downloading a Fidelity Investment's statement or trade confirmation pdf document.
When I attempt to download and save without previewing a PDF doc on Fidelity Investment website, Firefox does not save the file with the PDF extension. Which results in the file loosing its association with its appropriate viewing app.
However if the firefox \tools\options\applications\"Portable Document Format (PDF)" is changed to either "Always Ask" or "Preview in Firefox" the problem doesn't occur.
Or if the user right clicks the PDF link on the source html page and selects "save link as" the dialog box will ask to save the doc as a PDF and correctly add the PDF extension to the saved file name.
This problem occurs with firefox 28.0 for windows and firefox 28.01 for android.
The problem doesn't appear to occur with chrome or IE. However they don't offer a means to do a single click save.

Yes I noted that method works already..
I was trying to get the "single click save" to function as designed.

  • Hide filename ext when saving?

This might be a simple prefrence setting but I can't seem to make it work. In CS5 and I go to "save for web" like I would when I was on CS4. A lot of times I will click on an exsiting file so that file name will auto fill the new save name and then i'll add to it. But now when I click on a file I get the filename and ext, how can I get just the filename to show in the input box and not add the file ext to the name?

I have this issue as well and it appeared out of nowhere yesterday in Photoshop CS6.
Previously, when I tried to "save as" I got "filename." Starting yesterday I get "filename.jpg."
I have another installation of CS6 and on that one I get simply "filename."
This has nothing to do with file/folder options in Windows Explorer. I don't see extension names anywhere but in the Phootshop 'save as' input field.
There must be a fix for this.
    It is highly annoying.

  • Auto-populate filename field when saving?

I have a form which contains a Save button (using the following JavaScript: app.execMenuItem("SaveAs"))
I have a required field on the form called 'ProjectTitle'. Is there something I can add to the button script which will pick up what the user types in the 'ProjectTitle' field and use that as the filename when they click the 'Save' button?
They wouldn't be required to use the carried over text, but it will save time and prevent possbilty illogical filenames.
    Anyone? Thanks!

    Hi
I know but you can try to use the field-symbols
    DATA: WI_AUFK TYPE CI_AUFK.
    DATA: FIELD(30) TYPE C.
    FIELD-SYMBOLS <FS> TYPE ANY.
    FIELD = '(PROGRAM NAME)STRUCTURE NAME'.
    ASSIGN (FIELD) TO <FS>.
    WI_AUFK-FIELD1 = ....
    WI_AUFK-FIELD2 = ....
    MOVE-CORRESPONDING WI_AUFK TO <FS>.
So you're looking for the name of the program and the structure.
I suppose they can be: SAPLCOIH, CAUFVD, so:
    DATA: WI_AUFK TYPE CI_AUFK.
    DATA: FIELD(30) TYPE C.
    FIELD-SYMBOLS <FS> TYPE ANY.
    FIELD = '(SAPLCOIH)CAUFVD'.
    ASSIGN (FIELD) TO <FS>.
    MOVE-CORRESPONDING <FS> TO WI_AUFK.
    IF WI_AUFK-FIELD1 IS INITIAL
    WI_AUFK-FIELD1 = ....
    ENDIF.
    IF WI_AUFK-FIELD2 IS INITIAL
    WI_AUFK-FIELD2 = ....
    ENDIF.
    MOVE-CORRESPONDING WI_AUFK TO <FS>.

  • Why does new version of Adobe reader for Windows 8 not give signed and saved document the "signed" extension when you save the file after placing a signature...  this worked on an earler version.

I have upgraded my PC to new Windows 8 machine ..  Now when I place a signature on document and save it does not automatically place a "signed" extension on the filename.  Previous version on my machine always did this.
Why is this ,  can I set up my new version to do same...

When you "save as" as opposed to simply "save", there is sometimes a different location for the file to be saved. When you "save as" to the same location as an original, you will bewarned that a file already exists with that name and be asked if you're sure you want ot overwrite the original file. If you didn't see that when "saving as", you probably saved the signed file to a different location.

  • Support for file extensions with more than three characters when saving - I want my FLAC!

Why does the Wave Editor still drop characters from filenames with more than three character extensions when you save a file? But since -opening- a FLAC file with an extension of ".flac" doesn't get chopped to ".fla", why does Audition still chop off the extra character when -saving-?
It gets old quickly when you have to save, close and reopen files in order to get Audition's Multitrack editor to play nice and be able to find files when you reopen the Session.
Given that the FLAC filter is open source, I may just have to modify the code and recompile it to force a save to ".fla"... But of course, ".fla" is a Flash file extension, which I also use, so that is a crude hack for me.

    Hi bro...
use in BYTE mode in place of in TEXT mode. and at the end of each line give some special charactor so as to distinguish between lines. This is effected  by unicode check too
    regards

  • When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF?

When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF? Currently when I have a Framemaker book that I want to save as a PDF, I choose Save Book As and then choose PDF for the file format. A dialog box comes up in which I can choose the Bookmarks tab and choose which tagged content I want to be made into bookmarks in the PDF file. What if I would rather have the filename of a document rather than the chapter title be a bookmark in the PDF? Is that possible? Where would I choose that option? Thanks!

There are two ways that you could do this. You can either use postscript text frames and enter the correct pdfmark entries to show the file name with the corresponding actions (i.e. where to go in the PDF) or you can use hidden text in FM and the "Filename (Short) " variable in a unique paratag to be picked up by FM's bookmark creation.
To go the pdfmark route, see http://www.pdflib.com/fileadmin/pdflib/pdf/pdfmark_primer.pdf for details and also consult the Adobe Pdfmark Reference manual (http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdfmark_reference.pdf).
The hidden text route would use FM's Color Views to specify a colour as Invisible. This will make the content visually disappear from the screen (and any output), but FM will still be able to read the contents of any text that is coloured with the Invisible colour(s).
    1. Pick or create a colour that you want to be invisible. [Magenta is usually a good bet and stands out visually].
    2. Set that colour to be invisible in View 1 and visible in View 6. [you can use the shortcut <esc> v 1 and <esc> v 6 to toggle between the views.]
    3. Create a paratag to use for the filename and set the font colour to use the invisible colour.
    3. In the title of each chapter file, drop an anchored frame that is set to be outside of the text frame [so it won't interfere with any other content].
    4. In that AFrame, insert a text frame and use the invisible paratag defined in step 3.
    5. Insert the Filename (Short) variable in that text frame.
    6. Repeat steps for all files to be included in the bookmarks.
When creating the PDF bookmarks, select only the paratag used for the invisible colour.
Don't forget to toggle the View to be invisible (i.e. <esc> v 1  - this also works at the book level for all files in the book).

  • Non-alphanumeric chars replaced with underscore when saving long filenames

    Hi,
I have a java application that streams a byte array (content type: 'application/pdf') to an Internet Explorer window. The PDF displays fine, in an embedded version of Adobe Reader 8. However, if I click on the Adobe 'Save' button then the filename gets changed as follows:
    PDF URL: http://localhost:8080/mcs/ctrl/flowOpenJobPDFWindow/AP1070.pdf?veryLongQueryString...
    PDF filename: http___localhost_8080_mcs_ctrl_flowOpenJobPDFWindow_AP1070.pdf
Anything that isn't alphanumeric is converted into an underscore character. I would expect, and need, the file to be named something like 'AP1070.pdf'.
I think this has something to do with the fact that I am streaming content to IE because if I point an IE window to an identical file that actually exists on the server then the filename when saving does look like 'AP1070.pdf', regardless of the length of the URL or querystring. Does adobe reader expect something in the header to stop this happening?
I can provide java code if this would be useful, or any other information required. If you think this is more likely to be a java issue then I thank you for your time and will raise on a java forum.
    Environment:
Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
    Adobe Reader 8.
    Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11
    Many thanks,

You can give feedback to Apple at their Feedback Page.

  • How avoid the hyphen in filename when saving ?

How avoid the hyphen that illustrator puts between 2 words in the filename when saving your existing file.
E.g.: open file "Donald Duck.ai", edit it and save it again. Illustrator puts a hyphen between : "Donald-Duck.ai".
Is it possible to avoid this ?

I tried a lot of settings. Set all on "none" in Settings > Output Settings, and saved that settings.
When saving for Web the second time the same .ai, the hyphen remains away.
But saving another .ai, settings are gone and the "Custom" settings are selected again.
I searched the map "Output Settings", to delete "Custom" so "Default" would be selected, but "Custom" is not in that map.
Otherwise I could copy my saved settings into the "Custom" file.
I found this about my issue : http://okapi.sourceforge.net/Release/Filters/Help/illustrator.htm
    See "Issues with Illustrator" :
The JPEG preview files have modified filenames. If you choose to generate the ancillary JPEG preview file when extracting, you will notice that filenames with spaces are modified to have dashes instead. For example, the JPEG of the file "My Example.ai" will be "My-Example.ai.jpeg" instead of "My Example.ai.jpg". This is because Illustrator forces filenames without spaces.

  • Errors when saving to SMB mounts (a thorough examination)

Several of the users I support have reported the following issue when trying to save files to the network from Photoshop. I have found several threads about this on both the Adobe forums and the Mac forums. However, in most of the threads the information provided is incomplete or does not control for enough variables. And the result is that Adobe seems to blame Apple, and Apple seems to blame Adobe. So blame aside, here is information that I hope helps Adobe solve the issue at hand.
When saving to a mounted SMB point, users report one of two errors:
Could not save <filename> because of a program error
Could not save <filename> because write access was not granted
I can replicate the issue on:
Lion 10.7.X with Photoshop CS 5
Lion 10.7.X with Photoshop CS 5.1
Snow Leopard 10.6.X with Photoshop CS 5
Snow Leopard 10.6.X with Photoshop CS 5.1
    Details:
We have only seen this error in Photoshop.  << Adobe has seen the same problems in several other applications >>
I have not tested out whether the issue applies to any other products in the CS suite.
At first I thought the issue might have to do with permissions, but it does not. I have reapplied permissions and the issue persists. And it affects all users, including Domain Admins, such as me, who have no R/W restrictions at any level.
The issue only occurs when Finder is in a view that shows a thumbnail/preview of the image.
Switching Finder to list mode resolves the error in all scenarios
So far I can replicate this with any file on any mount on any of our servers
It only occurs on mounted network points (ie - if I move the files locally, no errors are encountered)
For the following tests, presume the following:
    Source folder: smb://example/source/folder
    Target folder: smb://example/source/folder
    Target sub-folder: smb://example/source/folder/sub
Here are the steps I tested:
    Opened the file problem_file.psd.
A warning pops up prompting me to resolve a font vector issue, I chose "Update"
Note: that this error does not pop up for every file, just the original file I worked with, but this warning has nothing to do with the errors being received
Moved a layer so that there would be a change to save
    Clicked save
Received the error: "Could not save <filename> because of a program error"  << probably related to the known MacOS bug on SMB, or a known Finder/thumbnailing bug >>
The original file, problem_file.psd, is *DELETED* (very problematic)  << Known MacOS bug in SMB service, Apple is working on it >>
Then I tested with multiple variations of the following to conrol for things such as layers or font issues:
To eliminate the source file being the issue, I used a .png file that I had created locally with the OS-X screen shot keyboard command. This eliminated layers and fonts as issues.
In step 2 I chose to not update the font vector issue
In step 4 I tried saving as different file types (.jpg, .png, .gif)
Prior to step 6 I flattend the image to eliminate fonts and layers. This eliminated layers and fonts as issues.
Prior to step 6 I flattened the image, duplicate the image, closed the original (without saving), and attempted to save the new duplicate. This eliminated layers and fonts as issues.
Each variation still resulted in "Could not save <filename> because of a program error" and resulted in the deletion of the source file.
Next I controlled for saving image previews:
Photoshop -> Preferences -> File Handling
Under File Saving Options -> Image Previews, I set it to "Never Save" previews
Now when I repeated the tests from aobve, I receved the error "Could not save <filename> because write access was not granted".
Next I controlled for .DS_store files:
Disabled .DS_Store file creation on remotely mounted points.
Deleted the .DS_Store file for the source folder
Verified that .ds_store files were not being created on remotely mounted points
Ran the tests above, and the issue persisted: "Could not save <filename> because write access was not granted"
Now I decided to test sub-folders:
    Created a target sub-folder.
Repeated the test above, and its variations, but saving the problem_file.psd to the target sub-folder.
Still received one of the two errors, depending on the variation, but the source file is no longer deleted. This make sense because saving in another directory is really a "save as", and one would not expect safe saving (talked about more later) to affect source files in this scenario.
    Sort of a Solution:
    Open the file from Finder
Depending on the Finder view, Finder shows a thumnail of the image
Go back to Finder and select a different file
    Make changes to the file
    Save the file
    No error is received
This is when I discovered that the error only occurs when Finder is in a view that shows a thumbnail/preview of the image. Further testing of Finder show that in Cover Flow the error only occurs for the selected image. For example:
    Cover flow shows thumbnails/previews of files: A, B, C, D, E
    Open A
In Cover Flow select file B
The thumnails of of files A, B, C, D, E are still visible
Make a change to the open file
    Save the change
    No error is received
This shows that Finder is treating the thumbnails/previews of unselected files different than selected files.
    An Interesting Twist:
If from the last scenario with Cover Flow...
    Open file A
Go back to Finder and select a different file
Then make a change and attempt to save to the target sub-folder
Receive the error "Could not save <filename>" because of a program error.
    Discussion:
Photoshop does something called safe saving.
Photoshop saves the current document to a temporary file with a unique name
Photoshop deletes the original file << this is incorrect >>
Photoshop moves the temporary file to a file with the name of the original file that was deleted in step 2  << incorrect: the temp file replaces the original with an OS call to a function that is supposed to be an atomic operation >>
However, you can see that "safe saving" is misnamed, because while the original is deleted, Photoshop does not appear to be correctly ensuring that permissions exist to allow the temporary file to be ranemd or that the temporary file was renamed without error. Photoshop is either:
Not checking for the error  << yes, it is >>
Checking for the permissions and not catching the error  << incorrect >>
Checking for the permissions and giving an error to generic to discern the exact problem from. << also incorrect >>
Somewhere there is a conflict (perhaps a race condition) between:
    Photoshop creating the temporary file
The server applying permission to the newly created temporary file
OS-X reporting the file has been created
    Photoshop deleting the original file
    Photoshop saving the new file
Finder updating the thumbnail of the file
As I've shown here, the problem doesn't seem to reside fully with Apple or fully with Adobe. Hopefully this post provides enough information for some clever engineer to create a fix.
My information about safe saving is from an Adobe mod on a previous thread regarding this issue << and copied incorrectly, plus added bad assumptions>>. He detailed the process and also explained that Photoshop uses OS APIs to create and delete the files during safe saving. If his details are accurate, it seems that a temporary fix would at least change the safe saving process to the following:
Photoshop saves the current document to a temporary file with a unique name
Photoshop moves the original file to a temporary backup file (original-file-name.original-extension.bak)
Photoshop moves the temporary file to a file with the name of the original file moved in step 3
Photoshop checks to make sure that the temporary file has been succesfully renamed
If the temporary file has successfully been renamed, it deletes the backup file from step 2 OR if the temporary file has failed to be renamed, the backup is returned to its original file name
The appropriate error message, if any, is displayed

    You got several details wrong.
And it sounds like you are describing 2 known MacOS bugs:
    1) The OS fails when creating or swapping files on SMB servers, and this happens more often on files that have a resource fork.
    2) The Finder/QuickLook/Thumbnailing holds a file busy when it should not, causing program errors or file is busy errors.
We did as much as we could to work around these issues in Photoshop CS6 - after spending a lot of time debugging the OS issues and working with Apple.
Apple is still working on proper fixes within the OS.

  • How to hide filename extensions Bridge Web Gallery

    HI,
I am creating several web galleries using Bridge and I would like to display an individual title under each image to be seen when viewed in a browser.
I am aware that you can switch the display of individual image filenames on and off in some gallery templates, but these still show the .jpg (or whatever) file extension. This kind of ruins the effect if you want to have an image title such as "the view from the top of the hill".
I have tried adding IPTC titles, headlines and descriptions but cannot find a way to display them instead of the image filename.
Of course, I could just do away with the .jpg (or whatever) file extension on each image but that seems a bit radical (even though Bridge still displays the images happily...)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Pete

    Hey
I dont know if this is still an issue seen as its kinda old but it yet to be answered
create your gallery as normal, when saved go into the resources folder that is created along with your gallery and open up a file called group.xml in dreamweaver. For each image you should get the following code.
        <item>
            <title>5 rue Rossetti, Nice</title>
            <description />
            <metadata></metadata>
            <photographer></photographer>
            <copyright></copyright>
            <imageId image='' dbtype='' dbname='' />
            <mediaType category='image' format='jpeg' />
            <renditions>
                <rendition src='images/large/5%20rue%20Rossetti,%20Nice.jpg' height='1024' width='842' size='large' />
                <rendition src='images/medium/5%20rue%20Rossetti,%20Nice.jpg' height='768' width='631' size='medium' />
                <rendition src='images/thumb/5%20rue%20Rossetti,%20Nice.jpg' height='48' width='39' size='thumb' />
            </renditions>
        </item>
put the title that you want to be displayed in between the <title> and </title> tags
    hope this helped =]

  • Uppercase Filenaming Extensions help

I've just recently migrated from PS7/OS9  to  PS CS4, and Mac OS X (10.5.8)
I'm trying to "save for web"... and due to existing conventions here, would like all the .JPG files to come out UPPERCASE.
Save For Web and Devices --> Optimize Menu -->Edit Output Settings -->Saving Files
It appears that I should be able to set the .JPG filename extension to upper or lowercase. However, I only get lower case, regardless.
I could never get it to work in PS7 either. Am I misunderstanding what it is for or doing something wrong?
Is there a way I can get it to output the extensions in UPPERCASE?  Or do I just need to turn that off altogether and manually type it in the way I want it when I save?  (Faster than renaming them all in the Finder, unless I use an auto-renamer...  at this point I just NEED to get some stuff done and the endless automating/tweaking the workflow needs to take a back seat for a bit).
Thanks in advance for any pointers! (Even if the answer is no, I'd rather know it and move along)

I don't understand what you mean by "Adobe software will not run on a Case Sensitive system"  ?
The case is for my own visual references regarding my website... which isn't case sensitive, but I sure am
As to Bridge... well, I had to go look to see what it was for. At present I'm simply trying to replicate the apps and functions on OSX that I had in OS9 and still slogging through the details of getting a grip on a new workflow. (Which is proving to be rather slow at this stage).
It's definitely been a very huge leap at this point.
Getting along with most everything else in PS so far hasn't been an issue though, but this one niggling detail has persisted for a decade

  • When saving .tif or .eps files, it usually erases the last 2, 3 or 4 letters, why? ("as copy" issue)

    hi again
this is a question i wanted to ask the last couple of years:
it doesnt depend on CS5 or CS4, i guess nearly all newer versions
of photoshop erase some letters at the end of a filename, when saving as tif or eps, and the file was a photoshop .psd layer file before.
i am working with many masks, so when i finish a psd layer file and want to save it as tiff (without layers and path) for sending out to client,
i press "apple+alt+S" and the "save as" window checks "copy" as default, of course, i want to preserve the original filename without "..copy"
so i uncheck "save as copy", and then there are some letters missing, i have to manually replace the letters by the original ones.
thats very awkward and time consumptive, is there a better workaround, you could suggest?
is this my fault, maybe wrong workflow? what could i change, in order to avoid photoshop erasing letters in filenames, when saving?
what could i do, that "save as copy" wont appear anymore? i am always saving in another folder than the layer file folder,
but i can only select the folder after photoshop has checked "save as copy" by itself very quick, as it thinks i want to save the tiff file
into the .psd layer file folder...
i am usually manually editing the filename in the finder later,
as it has been very important for myself to stay with the original filename
as clients use the images in indesign, so it can auto-update, if the filename is the same as before.
    thanks for any help!

    thanks for your answer!
i am dealing with this problem within 1 or 2 years now, i guess.
photoshop always shortens my original filename, when i press "save as"
i am experiencing this problem on 3 macs, on different locations
(in my homeoffice and at another office i work freelance) (very different macs and photoshop versions (from CS3 to CS5)
    like:
original filename "vitra_woodenchair_hires_cmyk_original.psd" will be shortened to "vitra_woodenc copy.TIF"
i have to edit the files after that manually in the finder, as i send it back to clients, and they need their original filenames.
i also wonder why photoshop cs5 always wants to save a copy -
i never needed a copy of a file in my life, so why "save as copy" please?
i guess my problem is depending more or less only on the "save as copy" thing,
as it looks like, that the letters "copy" are erasing the end of my filename.
is there anything i can do, that photoshop wont suggest me a "save as copy" ever again?
    can i switch it off?
your suggestion of scripts is nice, i doubt, i am able to install a script at different macs, i never ve been dealing with
scripts before, it seems to be too complicate or it just sounds complicate to me, as i dont have specific
file save destinations, i save at different places on different mac servers in the mentioned offices. also i save
different kind of file types, sometimes psd, tiff, eps, jpg, png and all others...
i try deleting .plist now and report back
    thanks meanwhile...
