Filename.pages can't be opened

I have created a file 6 months ago with Pages 4.3, written in that file, converted it when I have updated Pages to 5.1, written in that file and today I have suddenly got the error "filename.pages can't be opened".
What should I do? How can I open my document?

What version of Pages was the thesis created in?
Do you have more than one version of Pages on your Mac?
Use Spotlight to search for "Pages" to find out.

  • Error: The document "filename.pages" couldn't be opened.

I got a new Mac Mini and put 2009 iWork on it and immediately ran the update. I can't open any documents!! All I get is "The document “filename.pages” couldn’t be opened." What is going on? I have a legitimate iWork disc and DO not want to have to buy anything again!

It is ALL documents I have made in ANY iWork program previously. I have included a couple.
I have also discovered that I cannot create any NEW documents. The template window comes up but is a black screen. If I hit "New Document" from the open window nothing comes up.

  • 'name of file'.pages can't be opened

I recently purchaced a new MacBook Pro (retina), before which I was using a standard MacBook (the white one from late 2009). I had updated all the software as much as I could only a couple of weeks prior to getting my new MacBook on the older one. I had most of my files saved on iCloud so there was no problem getting them when I logged into my account on my new MacBook. However, there was one file which I don't believe was backed up to iCloud (as I can't see it on my new laptop or my iPad). This file had been saved in pages and I had attatched it to an email a few months ago so I downloaded it from the email in which I sent it. The file is in my downloads but I think because the version of pages on which it had been saved isn't the same as the one on my current laptop, I can't open it, instead I get a message with the pages icon and "'name of file'.pages can't be opened". I really need to be able to open this file so any suggestions or help anyone might be able to give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

After using my browser (any of them) for a period of time I get a message saying that a page can't be opened. I have to reboot again. Clearing the cache doesn't help. It's very annoying. It even happened in the middle of a chat with Apple online support. I'd be very grateful for help!

Several things come to mind ... when you say your wife uses the same system with a different login and doesn't have issues, that suggests looking at your login items. Go to System Preferences (on your dock or on your hard drive in Applications), accounts, and on your account look at login items. Anything there that shouldn't be or isn't used? If you don't know, create a new account for yourself with no login items, and see if you still have the issue.
Next, I would run OnyX, which is a free disk maintenance program. You can download it from http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php . Do the tasks on the cleaning and maintenance tabs. Before using any disk maintenance software, you should have a system backup. I periodically run it, and others have found that it can help with performance.
You might look at how you're system is using memory. You should have enough but it's easy to check. Bring up the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in Applications/Utilities), and look at the system memory tab. Note page ins and page outs. If page outs are 10% to 15% more than page ins, you can use more memory for the programs you run. A page out occurs when memory is full and OS X has to write a section of memory to the hard drive. Too much of this can really impact performance. The optimal situation is for page outs to be zero.  Note these  values reset on a system boot.

  • I have the latest Pages  5.2 and get a sign saying "INDEX.pages" can't be opened. I have need of some of the documents. What can i do?

I have the latest Pages  5.2 and get a sign saying "INDEX.pages" can't be opened. I have need of some of the documents. What can i do?

Probably you have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open Pages 5.2 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.2 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened by newer Pages versions anywhere, is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Just installed os x maverick and updated my version of pages now when I try to open a document stored in pages format from old version get message "The Application "pages" can't be opened -1712  What is wrong?

Just updated to new version of pages.  Now can not open stored documents created under al pages.  Get message "the application pages can' be opened -1712"  hat do I do?

Apple released Pages 5.0 to run on Maverics only. They completely rewrote the program for Maverics and 64 bit compatibility. They failed to explain that this version is missing much of the previous version's capability and that it cannot read older Pages files. When they install it they leave the older Pages 4.3 in place because it is the only way to read the older Pages files and upgrade them to a level that can be read by Pages 5!
If you still have Pages 4.3 on your computer it will tell you what to do. If you do not then go into your backups and retrieve it.
Because of the deficiences of Pages 5 I have removed it from my Mac and gone back to working with Pages 4.3. I have also removed Pages 2 from my iPad and found Pages 1.7 in the Time Machinew backups and brought it forward and droped it onto the iTunes icon to restore it and then synced the iPad to get the Pages 1.7 running again - it is compatible with Pages 4.3 on the Mac so all is back to normal for me.
Apple say that they will fix many of the deficiences in Pages 5 in the next six months. I suggest you wait until then and keep an eye on these communities beforte considering the "upgrade".
Incedentaly Pages 5.0 writes files that cannot be read by anything else including Pages 4.3 - better hope no one sends you one! It does not save RTF either - what where they thinking!

  • Certain pages can only be opened in Internet Explorer, how to get around it

The pages that I'm trying to open, says it can't be opened as I'm not using using IE. There must be a way around it?
I have also tried Firefox and added a plugin, "IE view" but it doesn't work.
    Ideas please??

    Hi
many, but not all pages can be convinced that you're running IE via the 'User Agent' feature under the Develop menu. If you don;t see Safari's Develop menu, (between Bookmarks & Window) - enable it from Safari-Preferences-Advanced-Show Develop menu in menu bar.
Bypassing the 'can't be opened as I'm not using using IE' message doesn't guarantee that the page will work properly though, since some do use IE specific code.

  • Certificate erros and pages can't be opened

My macbook keeps giving certificate errors. I can't open certain websites anymore (like Facebook). Help?

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are several possible causes for it.
Back up all data, then take each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time
Select the Time Zone tab in the preference pane that opens and check that the time zone matches your location. Then select the Date & Time tab. Check that the data and time shown (including the year) are correct, and correct them if not.
    Check the box marked
              Set date and time automatically
if it's not already checked, and select one of the Apple time servers from the menu next to it.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemCACertificates.keychain
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open. The dialog should show "You can only read" in the Sharing & Permissions section.
    Repeat with this line:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
If instead of the Info dialog, you get a message that either file can't be found, reinstall OS X.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it by pressing command-V. Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 3
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select
              File ▹ Add Keychain
from the menu bar and add the following items:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu at the top, select
When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings. Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings.Never again change any of those settings.
    Step 4
Select My Certificates from the Category list. From the list of certificates shown, delete any that are marked with a red X as expired or invalid.
Export all remaining certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
              Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ Certificates
There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to  CRL.
    Step 6
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    /var/db/crls
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "crls" should open. Move all the files in that folder to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Step 7
Restart the computer, empty the Trash, and test.

  • The application "Pages" can't be opened

I click on the Pages application and it will not open.

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch Pages. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

Those who live by the GUI, die by the GUI.
When the GUI does not respond, you have no clue what to do next.
    Too bad to be you.

    Matthew
I do not know if you have come across warnings against using Pages 5 for any valuable work.
I have posted them almost incessantly, but you are only one of a series of users with unopenable files.
There are obvious warning signs against the new file format. It is incredibly complex and undocumented, proprietary and constantly shifting. Pages 5 damages older files and has a very restricted feature set that is not constant.
The only thing that opens Pages 5.1 files (and then not always) is Pages 5.1 running on very restricted hardware and very restricted software/OS.
It is handled across multiple conversions if it passes through iCloud and iOS devices, perhaps even iWork for iCloud beta. Despite what Apple says these are not the same.
If something goes wrong in the compressed bundle, that is the Pages 5 file format, then there is no known way of parsing the contents. All you can do is right click on the file to open the package and open Document.iwa which will reveal the occassional snippet of text amidst a lot of hexadecimal code.
Pages 5 is beta in all but name.
DO NOT USE PAGES 5 FOR VITAL WORK.
In fact avoid it at all costs.

  • Pages app can't be opened 1712

I've updated to new 'Pages' application, and now I can't open my documents.  Keep getting message: 'The application 'Pages' can't be opened' 1712.
    What's going on?  Thanks

    What Pages on what hardware?
If the problem is with older Pages '08 files they can't be opened with Pages 5.
Some Pages '09 files have problems with Pages 5 because it removed so many features.
