Files accumulating in a "downloads" folder

Have had QT (non-Pro) installed on a Windows XP computer for some time, during which several QT upgrades have been performed (some in place, others "clean").
Now I find a folder...
"\Documents and Settings\(user)\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime\downloads\"
that contains numerous sub-folders (many empty), and 9 separate download files using up well over 60 MB.
On another PC I today noticed similar files, after an uninstall of QT 7.4.1 (which was being taken off in preparation for installing 7.4.5).
To the best of my knowledge, no media downloads have occurred on either PC. (And none are visible or accessible through the QT Player menus.) QT is used only for playing locally saved files.
It's as if each new version wants to keep its program download (or parts thereof?) saved ad infinitum, even if QT is uninstalled.
Can anyone shed some light on what these files are, why they remain after uninstalls, and if they are required?

No one out there that cares to comment?

  • Downloaded files (dmg)  remain on download folder should I delete

hi, I noticed that whenever I download something from the internet such as yahoo messenger, limewire, clamx, there's this .dmg file in the download folder that always remain. Should I erase it without ruining the files that I downloaded?
Ex. if I delete the .dmg file for the yahoo messenger, will it still work on my mac. I hate junk files

In general, think of a disk image file (.dmg) as just like an installer disk that you would insert into the optical drive to install an application. Once a real installer disk has installed an app, you eject it because it is no longer needed -- its application "payload" now is on your hard drive. You generally should keep the disk handy somewhere in case the installed version develops a problem or is deleted by accident & you have to reinstall it.
It is the same for disk images, except that you can (usually) just download them again from the same source if you need them again. There are exceptions though: sometimes an older version is no longer available after a new one is released & you discover that for one reason or another you need the older version. Some downloads require a registration process you may want to avoid repeating. Occasionally, the source site may disappear from the Internet or experience temporary problems like a server going down.
Because of this, some people save some or all of their downloaded disk image files locally. One approach is to collect a number of them in another folder & then burn that to a CD or DVD when the folder grows large enough, after which the folder or its contents are deleted to reclaim hard drive space.
BTW, it is always a good idea to download & install applications only from trusted sources. With Limewire or other P2P methods, you have no guarantee that what you install has not been tampered with, is uncorrupted, or is even what it claims to be.

  • Can't delete files from the device downloads folder

I played around with my wonderfull passport and tried to install the app "1MobileMarket". Unfortunately the download of "1MobildeMarket_600.apk" stoped and now there is a file called "1MobileMarket_600.apk.temp" in the downloads folder which I can not delete :-/ Does anyone know what to do? I'm really grateful for any suggestions.

    Try rebooting then delete.
On your BlackBerry10 device with a non-removable battery:
Restart: Press and hold the upper edge power button a couple seconds and the tap the lower right RESTART.
    or,
Reboot: On the side edge volume keys, press and hold down both of the Up and Down volume keys for about 20 seconds, ignoring the initial screenshot message... the screen will go black and reboot.

  • HT1338 My itunes keeps telling me i do not have enough access permissions to do anything. I had used all my hard drive space so i deleted some files. i deleted the downloads folder and a few others and this is when this problem occurred. Please help!

I tried changing the permissions and installing a new itunes but nothing is working!

Had the same thing happen to me a few weeks back when I switched computers and migrated.  Here's what worked on my iMac, so maybe it'll work on your iPad, too.  Go to User(your home folder)/Music.  Select/highlight your "Music" folder.  Then do Command-I ("Get Info" from the File menu), click on the padlock icon in the lower right of the new window.  Enter your user password.  Click on your username just above the now-open padlock.  Select "Read & Write" if it's on "Read Only," "Write Only," or "No Access."  Now having your user account with "Read & Write" privileges (it may have been this way already; still do this next step), click on the gear on the bottom-center of that window.  Click on "Apply to all enclosed items."  When the pop-up says "Are you sure?" (or the equivalent), say "yes."  This will grant access privileges to your user account for all the music files inside your music folder--all your iTunes stuff included).  Then you should be good to go.

  • Auto unzip files under downloads folder

    - any downloaded files will go to "downloads folder" on the dock.
    - any "zip" type of files will unzip(decompress) on it's own under "downloads folder" right after the download action is completed.
    my question:
    1. is it safe for the zip file to unzip by itself? will I somehow get virus this way?
(if there are any virus in the zip file).
    2. is there any way to turn this auto unzip feature off?
(note that: it only unzips on it's own under "downloads folder" on the dock right after download is completed.)

    1. This shouldn't be a problem, but you can never be too safe.
    2. If you are downloading your files using Safari, do the following:
Safari > Preferences... > General (Tab) > Open "safe" files after downloading (Uncheck)

  • How do I use one downloads folder for multiple users?

I recently added my girlfriend a profile in my Imac. We both have seperate Profiles and logins however I would like to find out, if the the Downloads folder can be used by both profiles. I found that each profile has their own Downloads folder, and goes to their own locations.
I would like to find out, if its possible to re-direct my downloaded files as well as her downloaded files into just ONE "Downloads" folder. The default destination of the downloads folder would be /users/girlfriend(name of girlfriend). I want to change it to /users/(me) so that all downloads would just go to one folder.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Download Folder Can't Be Emptied

My wife no longer can get downloaded files out of her download folder. It appears to be too full. When you go to the folder the items are grayed out. At this point I would like to clean everything out of there so that it is usable again. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to address this problem?

    Hey..
Actually my wife uses Firefox primarily, so maybe that would be a better browser >to focus on.
I had a doubt while posting the reply and mentioning about Safari. Let us concentrate on Firefox and clear the downloaded items. Here are the steps.
    1. Open Firefox
    2. Click "Tools" on the top menu bar
    3. Choose 'Downloads'
    4. A window will open and you will see all the downloads in that window.
    5. At the bottom left of the window, you have a button "Clear List"
    6. Click on that and the download window will be emptied.
    Hope that helps............
    Regards

  • Contents of download folder was deleted and overwritten.

i upgraded to ff 34.0.5 yesterday. folder f:\downloads is the default download folder for my previous ff.
what happened next is something deleted all my folders and files in the f:\downloads folder and the worst part is all those folders and files are irrecoverable using undelete softwares (all my files and folders were delibrately overwritten. total more than 30GB of data). my folders and files were there yesterday before i upgraded ff.
what was found in f:\downloads now was deleted firefox components files only.
my folders and files were not only deleted but were overwritten all 30GB too. this is not an accident but a planned delibrate irresponsible action.
    please advise.

Downloading a file would normally bring up an option to open the file with the appropriate program or save it - for some reason now it just downloads straight to the download folder. Why? Problem with Firefox or something else? It's very frustrating - sometimes you want the file opened first so it can be discarded or saved to a different location.

Hey. that's great! Thanks for posting back with the outcome.

  • Single Click to Download File - Auto Rename if Conflicting File Exists in Downloads Folder

I am trying to migrate from Safari. However, one of THE most important features that I simply can't do without, is the one click "Download Linked File" right click contextual menu item. This together with the auto-rename file action if a name conflict exists within the downloads folder, to which you are saving the file.
Is there a way to do this in FF? All I can locate is"Save Link As" and then you have to either click to save or manually rename the file if there is a conflict. This is a real pain - I am happy to allow duplicate filenames for certain files.
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction - needs to be an absolute one click solution from contextual menu via an add on or something.
    Thanks

As I recall, DownThemAll is able to do this. You first have to configure it to rename files when a file with the same name already exists. Then you should be able to use the context menu option labeled “DTA OneClick!” or some such.

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

  • Can I safely move to Trash all downloaded files from Downloads folder, for the purpose of freeing up storage space?

My Downloads folder has reached 30GB. I am not sure why I keep adding files without ever cleaning up what's there. As a matter of fact, what's there can easily be re-downloaded from the web in case of need.
Can I safely trash 100% of the content of my Downloads Folder?

They're your files, so it's up to you whether to delete them or not. I personally don't tend to keep downloads if they are easily re-downloaded. (An exception might be a large download that for some reason may need to be reinstalled.)

  • Firefox does not delete the .part file from my download folder after a successful download

First off, I'm on a MacBook Pro, running 10.6.4 and FF3.6.12
I've recently noticed that on occasion Firefox does not seem to delete the .part file associated with a successful download. The .part file (with a name consisting of a string of random characters followed by a .part extension) is visible in my Download folder stack, although not visible in the actual folder view. I cannot drag this file from the stack to the trash.
The real problem stems from the fact that this seems to create a directory error on my hard drive. Were I to run Disk Utility (which I will have to do... again!), it would return with an error saying something like "incorrect block length", requiring me to boot up from my install disk and repair the drive.
Is this maybe a bug? Is there something I might be doing wrong? Could an extension like AdBlock be messing up my downloads?

It seems that FireFox leaves those partial download files if for any reason they get interrupted. It's possible to resume the download through various uninteresting means, but if you're like me, it gets filled up with files that I intentionally did not complete downloading.
If you're terminal-savvy, you can set up a script that cleans up old .part files. Here's what I've set in my crontab:
    0 * * * * /usr/bin/find ~/Downloads/*.part -atime +1 -exec rm {} \; &> /dev/null
It will delete any files in my downloads folder that are at least 1 day old.
To install this in your crontab, launch terminal and type "crontab -e"
This will bring up a text editor, probably vi. You'll see a bunch of ~'s down the left side. Type "i" to go into "insert" mode. The bottom left will say "-- INSERT --"
Copy and paste (or type) the line of code I have above.
Hit enter just to make sure you have a newline at the end.
Hit "Escape" to exit the insert mode.
Hit Shift-Z Shift-Z (that's Shift-Z twice) to exit the editor.
You should see a status message "crontab: installing new crontab"
If you type "crontab -l" you should see your newly installed crontab.
At the top of the next hour, any .part files that are more than a day old should be deleted, and this should continue forever.
