Files are deleted, not really

I listen to files especially podcasts, when I am done I delete the file. ITunes asks do I want to delete to the recycle bin I say yes and the file is gone from Itunes.
Yet I ck the folder in Itunes directory and the file is still there.
It dosent happen all the time and not to all the folders but a few folders may have up to 20 shows that I know I deleted from Itunes.
I go in and delete them to save space but this is annoying and a time waster.
Does anyone know why this happens and how to correct it?
thanks

so the exact story is this...
been having trouble keeping my itunes talking to my external drive where I want to keep all my media. What happens is that all tell it to look there, but once the computers restarted, it automatically then goes back to looking at the internal HD. so then I have to tell it to look at the external drive. This is an issue becasue every time this happens, it goes back through and updates, library, consolodates, etc...
so I got rid of what I had on the external drive and then followed the instructions EXACTLY that where on
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive
and ever since then everything that's post 3/18/2009 is still showing up in itunes, but itunes can't find the file to play.
Recycle bin is empty. But I've heard there's a way to undelete stuff (some kind of recovery). You also mentioned that there's a way to get the info back that's on the ipod... Well, alot of it IS on my ipod right now. How can I transfer info from ipod back onto the computer? just a simple sync?

You want to transfer purchases from the iPod to your iTunes account.
Connect the device to iTunes but do not sync.
    Select File > Transfer Purchases.
This will copy the content purchased via iTunes on the iPod to your iTunes account.

  • If data files are deleted?

If data files are deleted, can they be recovered from the control file?

It depends on what is in the datafiles in the tablespaces, if they actually contain data, if they are the only datafiles for the tablespace, etc.
Let's assume that they are the only datafiles for the tablespace and segments have allocated and used space in them.
If the segments are index segments, you can recreate the indexes from the data that currently exists in the table.
If the segments are table segments, you will need to recreate the data either by hand or extracting it from another source.
If no segment has allocated space in the datafile, you should be able to offline the datafile. If this works, it is a good idea to migrate the segments to a new tablespace and then drop the tablespace (unless it is SYSTEM) as Oracle does not like offline datafiles and it will become a maintenance hassle.
If you do not have a backup, do you have a recent export?
Once you have addressed the immediate issues of reconstructing the data, you need to address the issues of backups (you should at least backup the database periodically even if you don't run in archivelog mode) and security (no one should be dropping live data files).

  • All Files preference is not really all files?

Time machine must not really back up all files as it says in the preferences, as a significant difference exists in my set-up between file number counts on the drives (both individually and collectively) and what is reported by Time Machine as the contents of the Backup.backupdb file set. Whether or not this is partially accounted for by hidden files (and why would not they be backed-up, too?) is not clear. For example, my System drive reports "using" =105.7 GB, drive B=214.8GB, and drive C=148.9GB, total = 469.4GB. But the Time Machine backup says it is accounting for only 368.4 GB of content of those 3 drives. That about 101 GB left out in the cold, so to speak. All volumes are formatted the same way (Extended and Journaled), and when you add up the file item counts, there is a similar disparity of many hundreds of thousands of files. Even if I count the hidden files, it still is quite a huge difference. An Admin user account has a quite small amount in it, so if other accounts are being ignored, that cannot account for the disparity. What does Time Machine NOT back-up? Why not? Should I be using other software that captures "everything" more completely for serious back-ups?

For reasons I cannot explain, I cannot launch any widgets or even get into the Dashboard, even by direct launch attempts.
That's an indication of something else wrong. I'd suggest doing both +Repair Permissions+ and +Verify Disk+ on your internal HD via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Don't be alarmed by the mostly-spurious messages the +Repair Permissions+ will send, but +Verify Disk+ reports errors, you'll have to boot from your Leopard Install disc to fix them. Post back if you need to do this but need help.
So I'm stuck there. Will I have to re-instal the system to get Dashboard running?
That's a separate issue. Let's resolve this one first, if we can, and if the repairs above don't fix it.
(Obviously, I'd want a full back-up before installing a new System, right? So I'm wary of relying on the TM backup less those 101 GB). I checked, no "exclusions" on list. I suppose some of this could be a result of compression or incomplete blocks being more efficiently packed, but really, that much? Also, the file number counts are way off.
TM does not compress data. As posted earlier, your backups should be nearly the size of what's used on your internal HD, but there are automatic exclusions of things you don't need that almost certainly explain the difference. Where are you getting the "file number counts"? The unique structure of TM backups and the way various apps count files aren't always the same.
Please advise on getting the widget to operate. THANKS!
As long as it's now been, the widget most likely won't show your first backup anyway. In fact, they may be gone from your logs entirely, as OSX rotates them out after several days.
So, let's try to look at your logs directly. Use the Console app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
When it starts, click +Show Log List+ in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your /var/log folder, click it's expansion triangle, then find the system.log.0.bz2 etc. files. These are your previous system logs. Select the last one (probably number 7) and click to open it.
It opens at the end (bottom). Look for the date and time of your first backup. If the backup was before the dates in file 7, it's logs are gone. If was earlier than what's in the number 7 file, work back through the files until you find the right time period.
Type backupd in the Filter box in the toolbar. This will select only messages from TM backups, but all run together instead of separately for each run as the widget does. Each run will have a different +Process ID+ (the number enclosed in square brackets after the backupd process name).
Navigate to the +Starting standard backup+ message for the backup, then see what follows. There should be various messages from the backupd process, ending with "Backup completed successfully." Copy and post the whole group here (shouldn't be more than a dozen messages).
PS: I can do a full Retrospect back-up (always have but only weekly) and it does reflect file size and count as expected. Maybe I should just continue that and skip TM?
That's up to you. One of the main advantages of Time Machine is it's very fast hourly incremental backups, giving you an excellent chance of recovering a previous version of a file that you changed or deleted in error (or used Save rather than +Save As+ on), or that somehow got corrupted.

  • What happens to versions data when files are deleted ?

When working on a document with an application using autosave, I understand modifications are regularly saved together with the actual state of the file. When such file is dulicated, history and the different versions are not duplicated.
My question is, what happens to the versions data if the original file is deleted and is the space used for all versions reclaimed ?
Working with big documents on SSD disk could be a problem seems to me.
    Thanks for your comments.

    Hi Tony,
As soon as data is deleted from the cube, Data will not be available for reporting. because for any reports data is fetched from Tables, for DSO they will fetch from Active table.
So you will receive a message Data not found, if the data is deleted from Cube's table.
Assign some points, if this is helpful.

  • How do I delete files permanently from a usb flash key? On my mac (Yosemite 10.10) it's telling me the files are deleted, however on plugging key into television they're still there

I've a problem I've never come across before and it's how to permanently delete files on a usb flash key? I've just migrated from using Windows for 15 years onto Apple iMac and had been deleting files easily and permanently from the key on Windows without any hassle and thought I'd done the same on my iMac but seemingly they're still there as the tele is showing them when key is plugged in, BUT they can not be seen on iMac. I wondered why the key wouldn't take anymore files after, what I thought was, deletion and now I know why-imac hasn't deleted them!
I've actually gone into Disk Utility and formatted the key in it's usual FAT32 format to finally delete the files.  Anyone any ideas as to why this happens and how to solve this please?

In addition to what Drew wrote, remember the Mac has a data fork and a resource fork.
Here is an old thread but a nice recap by Dr. Smoke
    ._Files
Note that the ._file files you note are the resource forks of Mac files you copied to the drive from your Mac, and these are only visible when you use the Flash drive on a PC. These are normal and indicate the Flash drive is already formatted for Windows.
When you copy or save a file from a Mac OS X system to a Windows shared volume or a Windows-formatted disk, the Mac creates two files: the data fork (xxx) and the resource fork (._xxx). This is called Apple Double Format and is normal. The resource fork contains additional data about the file that is exclusive to the Mac that cannot be saved otherwise on Windows-formatted disks. This is new with Mac OS X, as documented in Mac OS X: Apple Double Format Creates File Name With the Prefix '._'.
The resource fork files (._xxx) are necessary if you want to copy the file back to the Mac and retain the metadata. The resource forks of files are invisible when they are used on the Mac: the Mac OS Extended file system (aka HFS Plus or HFS+) uses forked files, with a file having both data and resource forks.
You can delete the resource forks on the Windows disk if and only if you don't care about losing the resource fork information should you copy them back to the Mac, such as comments, image preview icon, etc. Some Mac applications use the resource fork data, so deleting the resource fork can be problematic if you copy the file back to the Mac. Likewise moving the file while not also moving its associated resource fork when using the data on a PC can result in problems when using some files again on the Mac.
You can't prevent the resource forks from being created if you copy or save files from the Mac to the Windows share or Windows-formatted disk via Finder.

  • Offline redolog file are delete in Oracle 11

    Hi
We recently upgrade our Oracle release from Oracle 10.2.0.2 to Oracle Database 11g Release 2.
I was running the process to table compression with BRSPACE 7.20  using the command:
    brspace -u / -p /oracle/LUK/112_64/dbs/reorgEXCL.tab -f tbreorg -a reorg -o SAPR3 -s PSAPLUK -t allsel -n PSAPLUKCOMP -c ctab u2013SCT
The process finish ok but I have a problem with Offline redolog, it are generated succesfully but it are delete after a short time, it disappear from the filesystem, I donot understand this behavior, the delete of archive log is not a deliberate configuration.
If I execute the archive log backup I allways obtain a lot of warnings with redolog file not found:
Offline redolog file '/oracle/XXX/saparch/XXXarch1_11155_666372933.dbf' not found
After compression process the Offline redologs files are being delete too.
I need to know the reason for this behavior, may be a wrong parameter in our database?
It is a normal situation with Oracle 11?
What happen with the Database and backup/restore strategy without offline redologs?
Next week I need to upgrade the oracle release in our productive system, in this system the archive and database backup are very important and I need to solve this issue or fix it.
Please help me to solve this problem.
    Thanks in advanced,
    OMM

    Hi,
Offline redolog file '/oracle/XXX/saparch/XXXarch1_11155_666372933.dbf' not found
Such messages are only seen if some one has deleted/moved the complained offline redo log files form the Archive Log destination.
Please ensure that if someone has moved/deleted the offline redo log files or not ? It may be done to accommodate space in Archive log destination, as the reorganization/compression activities will generate more archive logs.
Also try to perform the same activity again and monitor the archive log destination directory. As i think, such "Offline redo log file deletion after Table Compressions activity done by BRSAPCE " behavior is not possible at all.
What happen with the Database and backup/restore strategy without offline redologs?
Offline Redo log files must require in Database media Recovery process. Without it only Point-in-time recovery is possible.

  • Can I reimport originals after data files are deleted?

While selecting photos to burn to a cd I copied folders from the 'Data' folder in iPhoto library. I then moved several individual files, which I did not require for the burn, from the cd to trash - before I had burned. I did not realise that this would delete the data files from the iPhoto library itself. I emptied trash before checking back with iPhoto and now, of course, those images disappear from my library whenever I open iPhoto. However, I still have the photos saved in two locations as 'Originals', but when I try to import them back into iPhoto a message appears to tell me they are unreadable. The 'Originals' files are not corrupted, but how do I reimport them into iPhoto so that they reappear in my Library Data folder in their old locations?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You do know that the Data folder only contains thumbnail sized files that iPhoto uses within the library, right?
If you can see the blank thumbnail boxes in the library and can click on them to bring up the full sized image you have a good chance at recovering the library by rebuilding as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If that doesn't resurrect the library then you'll have to start with a new library and import the Originals folder from the old library. Here's how:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the iPhoto library folder from the desktop. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
In the future, Don't mess with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. See TD's treatis on file access for how to access photos for use outside of iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Every time I download files, they are deleted automatically, except for PDF files, after completion. I have tried e-mail attachments, utility downloads, patches, drivers, etc. with no luck. Help!

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

  • Some files are deleted in the runtime suddenly

    Hi all,
I have a strange situation here.
    I have a server/client application.
Sometimes I encountered some of files were deleted after I ran the application.
They can be jar files, class files, or property files - no pattern at all -.
I use the Windows Platform (FAT32 file systsem) and JRE1.3.1.
I checked trash can folder after some were gone, but I could not find any from there.
    Any clues?
    Thank you.

Files only wind up in the trash can if the application that deleted them was coded to send them there...so in general most files never see the trashcan unless you use Explorer to do so.
If I were you I would double check my code carefully.

  • Are deleted photos really deleted or is there some kind of back up file.

i deleted a photo i did not want to delete is there anyway to get it back

If you deleted it from the iPhone, it depends on if you had it copied to your computer. If you didn't, it's gone for good. If it's copied on your computer, all you need to do is sync it back over.
