Files beginning with _ in unknown folder ?!?!

Hey guys,  I went home this weekend and put all my cd's onto my harddrive to then put on my sandisk, fun fun fun! First of all Apple are such bastards that i then had to convert my audio files to MP3. ok fine, done, dragged and dropped all my music easy enough onto my sandisk and the files work and are all in numerical order in their own nice folder. BUT !!! i have an unknown folder with basically all my files in it that are not even 5 seconds long (so its really hard to delete them from the device) and the file names all start with an underscore like this _  when i plug my sandisk into my computer i cant find any of these files to delete. So frustrating for someone like me who is very serious about organisation!  Hope this makes sense and someone can please please please help me!

Send your thank-you letter to Apple.
First of all, when you're ripping albums you can go direct to mp3. Importing Settings shows up in iTunes when it lists the tracks of an album--down on the lower right in my Windows version, but Apple likes to move things around. That way you can rip directly to mp3 instead of converting. Use Custom and 320kbps for the mp3 settings--lower bitrates were for the days of more limited storage.
Now about your itty-bitty files...
The Unknown folder you are seeing is not really a folder. There is no folder called Unknown on the Sansa.  Unknown means unknown artist because the Sansa makes Artist, Album, etc. listings from  information gathered from ID3 tags, electronic labels in the files.
Now, those files that start with underscore (actually period underscore) aren't really mp3 files and don't have tags--so they pop up as Unknown. If you really like to go by actual folders, you can scroll down to the end of Music and see Folders--those are actual folders, not tags.
But what are those Unknown thingies?
Well, when a Mac rips a CD, it creates the music files (for example 01-First Song.mp3) but also makes a Finder file that the Mac uses to locate things, and the Finder file for that song is ._01-First Song.mp3. (starts with period underscore). Then, because the Mac calls the finder files .mp3, the Sansa thinks they are music files. So cute.
You can just get rid of all of the Finder files from the Sansa, which doesn't need them. If you're on Apple your Sansa is probably connecting in MSC mode and you should make that permanent--Settings/System Settings/USB Mode/MSC.   (MTP is to connect to Windows Media Player, Auto switches between them and makes trouble).
Now look into your music folder on the unit or card and do a search for files with ._ in them.  Maybe you have a setting somewhere in the MAC to show hidden files or something--try Help. The Finder files are often in folders called MACOSX within the album folders, so you can also search the Sansa for MACOSX.  All the Finder files are 0kb, so you can also sort by size. When you find them, you can happily delete all of them from the Sansa. DS_Store files can also be deleted.
If your Mac just refuses to show the Finder files-I'm not sure, I'm in PC world--then make sure USB Mode is MSC (as above), find a  pal with a Windows computer, connect and search and delete them from the Sansa.
Mac people have written here about a program called Hidden Cleaner that does this automatically--you might try it.

  • My files no longer sort properly - files beginning with AEIOU come before

My files no longer sort properly - files beginning with AEIOU come first after numbers and special characters, then letters H, K, M-N, P, W, B-D and so on. I click on the column header again and it reverses the sort, but still messed up. This convoluted sort appears in all views. All the letters are grouped together, so all the "a"s, "e"s, etc are being sorted by some algorithm, but it's not alphabetical. I noticed it after installation of Snow Leopard, but it could have been that way before. I did a wipe and load and just imported user settings from Time Machine afterwards. Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

Usually, it is (1) a preference file located here
    <user home folder>/Library/Preferences/
In this case, the problem is not just Finder if it also happens in Mail. Unfortunately, there are a lot of preference files.
Or it is (2) a background process that runs when you log in to your account. If it is something that starts automatically, it may be one of your Login Items. You can look at System Preferences Accounts pane +Login Items+ tab. That list shows processes that run when you log in to that account. If you see anything that you no longer need, you should remove it. Look for anything there that might, for whatever reason, change the alphabetical sort order.
Make sure English is selected as language in System Preferences +Language & Text+ pane. It seem improbable that it would not be, but I just noticed there is a setting at the bottom of that pane that says +Order of sorted lists+. Does that have something other than English ?

  • Renamed file beginning with dot (.)

    Hello,
I created and accidentaly renamed a file "htaccess.txt" to ".htaccess".
I learned that files beginning with . are reserved for the system are thus not visible on the desktop… the file dissapeared
How can I do to view it ? I just want to rename or delete it.
    Regards,
    Nicolas

And just to add, you do have to be in the current directory that the hidden file is in to use those commands (Well not really, you can use an absolute path beginning from the root of the drive, but too prone to nasty mistakes.
Say the file is is your user folder in Documents.
When you first go into the shell, You will already be placed in YOUR users directory.
so if you do this command (Print working directory)
    pwd
    you will be returned with
/Users/username (Username is a placeholder for your users SHORTNAME)
So then you would just use the CD (Change directory) command
    cd Documents
and if you do a pwd again you will get
    /Users/username/Documents

  • Automator: Create folder from suffix of filename and put file names with same suffix into folder

I've been using a script to use automator to create a folder from the filename and put that file into it the folder just created.
I have a bunch of files that have similar names to them, but I don't want every file to be put into its own folder, instead I want all files with the same suffix (001) to go into the same folder.  I would also like the folder name to just be named the same as the suffix (001) instead of the full file name.
For example all of these files names that end with the same integer (001) should be dumped into the same folder named "001":
    Boston_ProRes422_1920x1080_24p_Audio_001
    Boston_ProRes422_3840x2160_24p_Audio_001
    Boston_ProRes422_3840x2160_24p_RAW_Audio_001
    Boston_ProRes422_1920x1080_24p_Audio_002
    Boston_ProRes422_1920x1080_24p_Audio_005
    Boston_ProRes422_1920x1080_24p_Audio_010
Any help at all would be incredible!!
    Thanks!

  • Some files downloaded with incorrect filename Unknown

When I go to the Sony website to download a new firmware for my TV, clicking on the "Accept" button to download the file should download a file called firmware.upd. This works fine in Firefox, but in Safari, it names the file "Unknown" (although the file size is correct). Is this a bug in Safari, or something that's gone wrong with my particular copy? Here's the page if anyone wants to test...
    http://support.sony-europe.com/tvhc/downloads/downloads.aspx?site=odwen_GB&f=FWBraviaM8722&ch=6&m=KDL-26EX302

    Hi
just rename the file to firmware.upd, it seems that sony's ftp server doesn't play quite right with Safari, or vice-versa.
Finder does show the right name, and transfer the file with it... so you could enter
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/TV/M8722/
into Finder-Go-Connect to Server, and connect as a guest, then drag the file anywhere you like, (or any ftp client) but it's the very same file, so rename is quicker.

  • Temporary files beginning with "aa" created(?) by Illustrator

Using Illustrator CS5, i'm noticing some files names "aaxyyyyy" with no extension (where xyyyyy is usually something like "r09035", a letter and then 5 numbers). I'm pretty sure Illustrator is creating these files.
    What are these files?
Is it safe to delete them?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Mike,
    Thanks for your reply.
The grid (chart) that highlights correctly is created from another program which is no longer viable, and as I need full control over the drawing, creating fields in Acrobat is not an option.
This grid (chart) created in Illustrator CC will be used in InDesign where ultimately a .pdf is created and viewed by clients in print and on screen (mac, pc, unix, and mobile devices). It's very helpful for users to highlight and mark their place on the chart as they read it to keep their place. Sometimes clients use a 3rd party .pdf reader to accomplish this. Long story short, the program we were creating these charts with is no longer viable, and are now testing Illustrator to create charts which is perfect except for the highlighting flow issue.

  • IOS 7 Pages file missing because name begins with '.'

I updated my iPad mini to iOS 7 and then updated Pages to the latest version.  The prior version of Pages allowed me to name a file beginning with a period ('.'), but in the new version this isn't allowed and I cannot see my file.  This is a very important file for me so I really need to be able to recover it.  I haven't found any file manager type programs that will allow me to see it and rename it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Yes, this is so true! I was hoping it would be fixed with the iOS8 release and iCloud Drive, but sadly that has not happened.
I could live with a keyboard shortcut, but you cannot expect me to scroll down just to add an item if I want to use this a lot on the web (which I would like to do).

  • Where do I find the files downloaded with Firefox on my harddrive?

Where are the downloaded files stored on my hard drive so I can access them?

You can find the files downloaded with Firefox in '''Downloads''' folder.[Default]
    {for e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\Downloads }
    OR
On Downloads window , right click on the file and select '''Open Containing Folder'''.

  • What is a file that begins with ._  ?

A client just sent me some files that begin with ._ in the extension.
(Client claimed they are vector files for a video project)
I tried to download and Mac told me they are system files and will be hidden.
sure enough they didn't show up my desktop. I download again adding a " to the front of the extension. I got the file on my desktop- but it would not open.
    I trashed it.
I then did a spotlight system search for the ._ files I think I download and I got no result.
    I'm now worried.
Are these ._ somewhere on my system?
Can they do harm to the system?

In Unix the initial period in a filename causes the file to become invisible. Spotlight's default configuration will not locate invisible files. If the files are downloaded to your Downloads folder or to your Desktop then you can make them visible in a number of different ways.
    1. Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    2. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter the following commands pressing RETURN after each. I will assume for the purpose of illustration that you have downloaded the files to your Desktop.
    cd /Users/yourusername/Desktop
    mv ._filename.ext filename.ext
This will rename each file to the same filename but without the initial "._". Repeat the "mv" command for each file substituting the actual filename.ext for the "filename.ext" in the command line. If you have downloaded the files to a different location, then substitute the full path to that location in the "cd" command line.
    3. Download a utility such as Batch Rename'Em from CNet Downloads or MacUpdate and use it to mass rename the files by removing the initial "._".
    4. Have your client rename the files before sending them to you by explaining that they are invisible on the Mac with the initial period in the filename.
    5. Configure Spotlight to search in system folders and to display invisible files in search results.
    6. Download Easy Find - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate - and use it instead of Spotlight.

  • Help! I renamed an existing file in Reader (Mobile) to begin with "." and it disappeared. Unable to search for it. How can I recover it? [iOS]

I was attempting to organize my files in Reader (on iPad) and I tried renaming an existing file to begin with "." in an attempt to put it at the top of my list, so that I could easily find it. It completely diappeared and if I search for it, it doesn't appear. Help!!!

    Hi,
A file or folder name starting with '.' ("dot" or "period") is considered hidden on most operating systems.  By naming a file starting with '.', you accidentally hid the file and made it inaccessible to all iOS apps.
I'd highly recommend using '_' ("underscore") in the future.
We have already made the change to the new Acrobat DC for iOS app (version 15.0.x) so that it disallows the rename operation with '.' as the first character.  (I assume that you are using Adobe Reader for iOS on iOS 7 or older iOS version.)
To recover your hidden file, you need to use a Windows or Mac desktop/laptop computer, install a File Manager app (e.g. iExplorer free demo version, iFunBox), connect your iPad, browse the file system on your iPad, and rename the file back to something else (so that it becomes "visible" again).
The exact steps vary depending on the File Manager app you choose.  You may be able to find How-To videos on the software manufacturer's web site or YouTube.
Don't worry.  Your hidden file is not permanently lost.  You just need to recover it.  Good luck!

I just noticed today that any Graph or PDF report I try to view I get the
following error - Error from reports from ZAM - File does not begin with
'%PDF-'. I tried to just save the file and then open it, but get the same
error. I can open other pdf files I have downloaded from other sites ok.
Anyone have any idea? I haven't done anything to that server that I am
aware of in quite a while.
    Thanks

I took a closer look at the files it downloaded, opened them with notepad,
    haer is what it says:

  • The dmg files have downloaded to the wrong folder - not finished with the install process

The dmg files have downloaded to the wrong folder - I am at the part of the download/install process where the "Welcome" screen appears asking for me to agree to the license agreement.  Somewhere on your site, I read that they should NOT go to the applications folder but to the "Users" folder. Can/should I move/drag the folder with the dmg files into the "Users" folder"? If so, before or after I complete the install? I am running MAC OSX 10.7.4 on a MAC Mini.
Also, when the trial period is over, I will use the license number for the purchased software disks, should the dmg's/folders then be moved to the application folder or stay in the "users" section? I have Purvhased Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and Adobe Premiere Elements 10, but somewhere on your site it was suggested to download them instead and use the license code at the appropiate time. If someone can help with these questions, I would appreciate it. Thank you

    Hi,
In the Welcome screen, you can accept the license agreement and can go ahead with the installation. You will be asked for the serial number. If you don't have one, install it as a trial application. By default, it's installed in the Applications folder. However, you can change the installation folder in the third screen, if you have a reason. Please see the screenshot below:
After installing, you can't move application to a different directory by dragging. You need to uninstall and install it again in the folder of your choice.
    Thanks,
    Sunil

I tried to do the instructions Adobe gave me but when
I put in the disc that came with my mac and hold down
C when it restarts it takes me to the screen to do a
    fresh install.
At that point go to the Menu & select Disk Utility - I can't remember exactly which menu but you should be able to find it easily... there isn't too much there
I went into the disk utility through the Apps folder
and for somereason the option to repair isnt
highlighted and it wont let me click it. I tried to
repair permissions/verify but it doesnt change
anything. I looked at the info and it says the volume
can be repaired, but it wont let me.
You can't Repair the disk the system is currently running the OS from - That's why you have to boot from the Installer disk (or some other start-up disk). Repair Disk addresses directory structure issues - totally separate from what Repair Permissions does.

  • Find and replace with multiple files and with a watch folder

When you use the open or adding folder items to handlers, you need to add the parameters for the file items passed to them.
I'll go ahead and post the applet/droplet version of my original script from the previous topic for reference:

Edit: how does the choose from list dialog handle those big strings? I'm guessing not very well - is that why you avoided using them?

  • TS3704 Trying to delete I Tunes because of missing MSVCR80.dll followed instructions from Apple to delete - Apple Mobile Device support keeps coming up its being used I have gone to program files deleted what I can from folder but left with 3 files

I have been getting the MSVCR80.dll missing message.
Been on the Apple site and following instruction.
Going down the list has instructed I have Deleted I Tunes.
    Deleted Apple Software Update
But when I try to delete Apple Mobile device it wouldn't delete so went into program files has the instructions say by going to Program Files\common Files\Apple\Apple Mobile Device Support Folder.
It still wouldn't delete saying it was being used.
I opened the file and highlighted all the folders and pressed delete, most of them have disapeared into my recycle bin but the folder still holds AppleMobileService, AppleMobileDeviceService_main.dll and MobileDevice.dll.
Message when I right click the first file is AppleMobileService I am told this action can't be completed because file is open in Apple Mobile Device. Close and Try again.
When I click the next file AppleMobileDeviceService_main dll it says  It comes up with This action cannot be completed and File description Apple Mobile Device Service. Company Apple Inc. File Version 17.323.0.9 Date Created 7/9/2013. Try again...... and finally  MobileDevice.dll come up with same message but file version 710.0.0.4 Date Created 7/9/2013 Size 902KB Both say Try Again but the same thing just recurred.
I have left my lap top on hoping that I a swift reply.
I am certainly no computer wizard and simply trying to follow the instructions to get rid of the box which keep coming up everytime I switch the lap top on saying APS Daemon.exe-System Error. The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.  I had looked at the internet and there appears to be warnings not to click on the button.
I have had an apdate from Apple for the I Tunes but it wouldn't update. I thought that may have sorted it so whilst I had a few hours I thought I would go through the process that is advised on Apple's website.
I hope I have not ruined my computer. I haven't even tried deleting Bonjour or Apple Application Support (I Tunes 9 or later) has these are supposed to come after the step I am on.
    Please HELP!!!!!
