Files being corrupted - why?

I have discovered six .jpg files (that I know were fine) unviewable - when I attempted to examined them in Adobe Photoshop I now get an error saying "unknown or invalid JPEG marker type" - these files were definitely being displayed ok last week and nothing has been done to them.
I then went to view an html document I had created in Adobe GoLive last week (again a document I know was displaying without a problem). It now contains text such as "ñ·×º2s4äE4sTÎJ-DÉ..." anon rather than the html it once contained.
Does anyone know why these files have become corrupt and how I can prevent it from happening again. If someone also knows how to reclaim the contents of that html file I would be extremely grateful.
Many thanks,
Ian Livingstone.

Thanks for the advise. I ran Disk Utility and it failed to verify the disk, finding orphaned nodes which I assume were my lost files. I repaired the disk and it is now verifying fine.
Do you know if there is a way to prevent this happening again or is this a hint of things to come? Can I expect to loose more files anywhere on the disk at any time? Very concerning.
Thanks once again for the heads up.
Ian.

  • When I try to update or download a newer version I get a box that says file is corrupt, why?

Everytime I try to download a newer version of Mozzilla Firefox it starts to download, then displays a run box, and when you push the run button, a box appears and says file is corrupt. I recently installed windows 7 and I have slow internet.

Any apps that she downloaded onto the device are tied to her apple ID.  They cannot be transferred to another account.  To update those apps, you would either need her password, or you could delete the apps and download them using your own apple id.

  • RAW files being corrupted by Aperture

Some of my RAW files stored in Aperture come in clean but eventually show up as corrupt. Specifically, a rectangular portion of the image will become banded with colors that don't belong there.
Sometimes I see this happen to a file just after some simple operation--say, adding a keyword. Whats' going on?
    Here's an example.
    http://lyonsimaging.smugmug.com/gallery/3547082

Just to add my own recent image corruption problem. I was getting a pattern on some images, almost like heavy rain in vertical streaks. I thought it was an Aperture bug at first as it only appeared in Aperture. However, I could transfer images to other apps, and the fault had gone. The fault was only occurring when using the Highlight and Shadow tool.
Thanks to a suggestion here, I finally found it was caused by my graphics card. I upgraded from my original Nvidia 5200FX 64MB, to a Radeon 9600XT 256MB. I was able to refit my old card, and the faulty was fixed. Turned out that the Radeon was overheating (these appear a lot in other forums, and an upgrade to the cooling is recommended). I have now refitted it with a Zalman copper cooler, and heat sinks to all the chips, and the problem seems to be cured.
It does seem strange that yours are corrupted back to the master though.

  • I had to install a new hard drive because my old hard drives boot files became corrupted, and i want to get all of my music files off the old hard drive and regain all my play counts/ratings/playlists

    Greetings everyone
as the title says, ive had to install a new hard drive  and i want to transfer my old itunes library onto the new drive, maintaining all playlists/play counts/ratings etc, album artwork if possible. The old hard drive is installed as a slave drive and is completely acessible, but due to the boot files being corrupted i cannot use it as the main drive and therefore operate my old itunes. Also, my ipod no longer contains my music library as itunes synced without my permission and wiped it.
The only thing i have tried is copying all of my old music files from the old drive by selecting 'add folder to library' and then the old drive, then replacing the new itunes library.itl file with the one from my old itunes. This restores all my playlists and playcounts but when i try to play any of the songs it says that the files could not be found, and i dont fancy locating  8500 music files individually!
Thankyou for taking the time to read my post, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ah, my reply was based on the assumption that you had a default installation of iTunes.
i.e you had all your music in the iTunes media folder inside your iTunes folder.
If your iTunes folder is so small compared to the amount of music you have, you must have a different arrangement.
    This complicates you situation considerably.
iTunes can cope with moving around as long as all the music is in the iTunes media folder, not not if it isn't.
Your first step should be to get iTunes working on the old drive. This will involve editing the xml library file so that the drive letter is correct and then rebuilding the library from the xml file.
Then you will need to consolidate your library which moves everything into the iTunes media fodler. After that you will be able to use my first suggestion.
    Step 1
Find the iTunes folder on the old drive and copy the two library files somewhere else so you can find them again. That's iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml.
Now open the copy of iTunes Library.xml with WordPad.
    Look for lines starting:
    Location
These contain the paths to tracks.
You will need to use a find/replace to change the drive letter so that it is correct.
Make sure that you include enough in the "find" so that you only change the right thing.
Maybe /c:/ and replace with /d:/ or whatever.
After that, tell iTunes to use the library on the old drive with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the old drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
    Then use the method in the following article to rebuild your library;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
Unfortunately the date added will be today for all tracks.
If iTunes works correctly after this, consolidate your library
    File>>Library>>Organize>>consolidate
This copies all tracks into to iTunes media folder and could create a problem if you do not have disk space so don't do it if you are unsure about free disk space.
Check that iTunes works OK and then use the first method.

  • Error Cab1 file is corrupt or missing in Reader 8.1

I've tried installing Reader 8.1 on two different machines and keep getting the same error message about the Cab1 file being corrupt or missing.
Its not missing but it is most definitely corrupted. Ive DL'd the darn thing 5 different times, all with the same results. It worked a few weeks ago on a very old Compaq (300MHz PII, 176MB RAM, Windows 2000 SP4). Now this week it wont install on a Gateway (900MHz AMD Athlon, 512 MB RAM, WinXP Pro SP2) or a Dell (1.5 GHz P4, 1GB RAM, WinXP Pro SP2). Doesn't make any sense to me.

Ok. I located the folder in the folders panel and found it was in red, not white. I clicked on it and went to library but the synchronize option was grayed out so I'm kind of stuck at this point. Thanks for your help.

  • Pref files getting corrupted

In the past two weeks I have had computer problems than I have had in years and end up with the solution of removing a bad prefs file.
I have had user prefs, system prefs desktop pictures pref file and several app prefs getting corrupted.
Now I go right to pulling prefs and/or using Onyx to fix the problems.
Anyone else having such a rash of files being corrupted?

    Hi Derryl s;
It has been my experience that when files start getting corrupted then the disk drive is generally on it's way out. I would check you disk drive to see if it is having problems.

  • After upgrading to version 6 my ArcGIS files become corrupted if I save them while I have FF open (sporadic occurence, but limited to FF being open). How can I downgrade to version 5?

I am using ArcGIS 10 and Firefox 6 on Windows XP.
After upgrading to version 6 my ArcGIS files become corrupted if I save them while I have FF open (sporadic occurence, but limited to FF being open). Any ideas of what could be causing this? I have also posted on the ArcGIS forum site for input from that side.
How can I downgrade to version 5? If that is the only option available.

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't have to process the php, it just has to show the HTML content. It did that just fine before the last upgrade but won't now.
I've seen that page you referenced: http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions.
It doesn't help. The things it says to look for aren't there for me, specifically:
    browser.download.pluginOverrideTypes
    plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types
I followed the rest of the instructions but it didn't help.
I did get it to quit opening tabs, instead it prompts me what it should do with the file every time now. What it should do, and used to do, is open the php page and display the HTML content.
    Any other ideas?

  • Why do music files get corrupted in iTunes?

Why do music files get corrupted in iTunes? All kinds of files;( mp3, mp4, aac, etc., either purchased from iTunes, Store, downloaded from online, or uploaded from an audio disc) SUDDENLY GET CORRUPTED AND STOP PLAYING! Even if I delete the file from my iTunes and then re-open it from the source, it appears to be corrupted. My system has been thoroughly scanned and does not have and never has hAd, a virus. Music files should not have a shelf life. They're just non-living pieces of information. So why should they suddenly go bad? It is unacceptable that over the past year I have had to delete many files from my iTunes library and find some other source for the same song. It has been an exhausting headache and an exasperating waste of my time.

this is not necessarily the case, I had an itunes library go bad on me. I noticed the corrupt files on my ipod, they were either skipping real bad or sounded like there was some crazy modulation filter applie. Anyways, i went to iTunes and the files were bad there, so I played them in WMP, also bad, so obviously it was a file issue, BUT, what was the source of the corruption.......also, this happened ONLY to mp3s, no other audio file.......so i had backups and copied the bad files from a dvd and played them in WMP, files were good, then i import them to iTunes, and the files are crap again, so I tried just adding to library, still bad. So the file was fine before, once iTunes touched it, the file went bad, I **** you not. So I uninstalled iTunes from my PC, downloaded the newest version and reinstalled, same problems, so i continued trying with a different version, and making sure all registry entries were cleared before installing etc. NOTHING, so in the end i had to start using Winamp and all those files have not since caused me problems. So NO, it does not have to be hard drive issues, assess your own situation and you should be able to figure out if it is your HDD. My problem seemed to be iTunes library corrupting my metadata. However, I could never get it to work. I am glad to say I have since abandoned my PC and bought a new iMac on which i once again happily running iTunes with all the same audio files as before

  • I'm trying to restore my phone from back up but am being told the file is corrupt or incompatable with the device, but it's the only device I have! Am quite desperate as I lost all my photos and have no idea where they went or how to get them back.

I was trying to copy the photos from my iphone onto my laptop, had them selected and then the laptop froze. Was also doing a software update on iphone (which I thoughi had finished). When I went back to the phone the photos were gone. I was also unable to find them on the laptop :-( (they were all of my new little baby)
On trying to restore from previous backup, I got a message that the file was corrupt or not compatable with the current device, but I only have this phone to use and no other devices.
I am unable to find any appropriate help topics on apple support. Any advice would be really appreciated

Because it says it's incompatible when it can't be, I got hope. I get error messages all the time with my iPod and iPhone that it cannot sync and that 'this device is not capapble of connecting to iTunes' stuff. I literally forget that happened, plug it in again and it works, I later realize that iTunes made a mistake, they do that.

  • Corrupted files being saved over network

I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2008 model and I am having some interesting issues that i can't seem to find the answer for. I switched offices recently and am now plugged in directly via Ethernet cable to our main Cisco router instead of a small under the desk hub shared by 3 computers, that iu used to use with no issues. Since i moved i am having trouble with files getting corrupted when i save to the XP server (peer to peer).
For example in InDesign CS3 i save a file and it will crash InDesign then corrupt the file. If i work on my hard drive, there are no issues. This week it started happening to Excel CSV files. I save them and open them no problem, but when they are used in any of our software on other computers that imports CSV files, they do not recognize the files as CSV.
Yesterday I downloaded some CSV files from an offsite FTP and saved to the server. I did not open them, but they had some weird additional characters in them, that showed up in our other software. I went on a PC downloaded them again and the CSV were fine. So i am starting to think it is some sort of network connection glitch.
Just wondering if any one has any ideas? It is getting to be a bigger and bigger problem each day.
    Thanks in advance.

These days programs have safe guards in them to stop loading a file that they cannot. Adobe products in particular I know should give you a message that they cannot read this file. How are you downloading these files from the server? What service or protocol?

  • At work 1000's of Ai files are corrupted. Not sure why they wont read in. Can someone help?

I work at a coin design maker and our old files seem to be corrupted. I could use some help figuring this out.

If PS does not recognize the file, it seems to confirm the file is corrupted.
Is the file the expected size on disk? Are you opening from a server? Do you have a recent backup to pull from to try to determine when the corruption started?

  • Every time I download the latest version of Firfox it wont install & says 'File is corrupted'. Why is this happening? Using Windows XP, Srvc pack 3 - Thanks.

When the download of the latest version of Mozilla Firefox is starting to instal I receive message 'File is corrupted' - every time! Tried loading manually (several times) - tried turning off AVG Firewall but nothing works. Please help. thanks - Helen

Disable, except firewall, and your antivirus and then try again to download from : http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Open the Windows Temp folder: in XP: Start -> Run -> Type %temp% -> OK. Select all files and folders in the Temp folder and delete them, then close the Temp folder window.
Make sure Firefox is not running and that no instance of "firefox.exe" appears in the Windows Task Manager.
Now try to install the fresh copy from the link above.
Do not forget to enable anti-virus software after you are finished with installation.
    thank you
