"Files can not write or be written to disk" (pic problem)

I can't seem to figure out why I get the error that I can't write to the disk. Does that mean I can't write to the ipod? I've tried 5 r's and still can't figure it out. Is is an OS issue on my comp? Anyway, I can't figure it out...thanks for your time.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that isn't fully working. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

Are you sure that the tomcat process is run by the right user that actually has permission to write the file?
The file's permissions might be '664' to you, but maybe the tomcat process's user is not in the correct group.

Final Cut can not write file

I suddenly can not edit a project. Final Cut X is telling me that it can not write the file, due either to a permissions issue or insufficiant space. Yet, neither of these seems likely. Here is why:
Permissions: The project file is on an external drive and as such, permissions do not appear to be a relevant issue.
Insufficiant space: I have roughly 1/2 tb of available space on the external drive where the file resides. The file in question is several hundred gb in size, but given the amount of available space on the drive, I do not think that should be the issue.
Anyone got any suggestions?

Tom, that’s the weird thing…everything was fine one day, then a day later, it wasn’t. And nothing had changed to speak of. Sure, I was using the computer for other things but I didn’t install any new hardware/software or anything like that, the amount of free space on the various drives didn’t experience any sudden changes, et cetera.
FCP has all the updates installed, so it is as up to date as possible. The same with the OS. But again, neither of these have been updated since before the problem suddenly just appeared. The source media is on the same drive and referenced by alias, not actually imported into the project files. There were no errors regarding those files from withing FCP. I believe the defaults for FPX are at default in regard to things such as the cache files. At least, I find nothing in the basic preferences which would change that and I have not gone into any project specific settings anywhere to make such a change. But in light of your previous comments, I’m wondering if there isn’t some way to direct FCP to use another drive — one with more free space available — as the cache drive.

ITunes sync problem: file could not be read or written

I am running itunes 10.5.2 on OSX 10.7.2 on a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook
A week ago i did a so called "clean install" on my Mac, making sure to back everything up on one external drive, and clone the disk on another before beggining. I started with snow leopard and then installed the upgrade from the app store. I then reinstalled all of my software, loaded my photos, setup my preferences and devices, and finally directed itunes to the media folder on my external drive.
I had been using the external drive for itunes for a couple of years: on the previous system and even my previous desktop, with no problems whatsoever.
All my songs apps etc. showed up and there seemed to be no issue.
Then I tried to sync my iphone 4s and it started off okay, but about halfway through the message "could not sync ___ song to iphone because the file could not be read or written". When i located the song in question it was where it should be and even played properly in itunes. The second try would bring about the same error only with a different song. This went on several times before I realized something was really wrong.
I made sure to change the permissions for all itunes folders, music folders, even the external drive itself to have read & write permissions for all fields, and checked the box to include all internal files. I also tried resetting my iphone, syncing through another usb port, and running permissions checks on the main drive.
Thinking it could be a broken hard drive, I tried moving my aperture folder to the internal drive and all 30 GB transfered no problem. But when I tried to move the itunes folder to another drive, it stopped midway through and the finder gave me "error -36" saying that some song could not be transfered because "the file could not be read or written".
In case it helps I have included the Console log from on of my attempts to syc.

I had this same message appear today when i was putting new music on my ipod touch 4th gen. The only difference is that I wasnt using an external drive. I was using the one on my computer. This is the first time i have had this problem

I have an iMovie project in iMovie HD 6.0.3. (Mac OS 10.5.8)
It plays, but I cannot copy the file (including saving it to a flash drive). I get either a message
"the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [name of
iMovie file] could not be read or written (Error Code 26)" or the
message "A project file is missing. The file [name of the QuickTime
movie inside the project.dv] couldn't be opened and is being skipped."
This happened suddenly, I was able to save a backup version numerous
times while working on the project.
I followed some of Karl Petersen's advise on apple discussions. I opened
the package contents, and everything seems to be there. The source file
(original QuickTime movie) is there and can be opened and played. I
replaced the current project file with the backup in the package
contents, but that did not change anything. I was able to export the
movie timeline into a new project as a single clip, but would like to be
able to copy the current project.

Make sure all drives are formatted as "Mac OS Extended". (Journalling preferred, but not necessary).

The File Could Not Be Read or Written?

I am trying to sync some songs to my iPod Touch (brand new, by the way) and occasionally I hit a song where I get the error message that the "file could not be read or written."
I set iTunes to only sync checked songs and video. I mark the problem song as "corrupted" in the notes and then uncheck it. When I sync again, it skips that song and the sync continues until it finds another song that is "corrupted."
Strangely though, I can play the song on my iMac with no problems. I just can't sync it to my iPod.
How do I fix this?

I had this issue and couldn't figure out what it was for the life of me. I am running windows 7 and the latest version of itunes. I tried multiple reinstalls of itunes and restores of the ipod. I finally got it fixed by following this guide.

Apparently there was an issue with my .dll files. Hope this helps.

Windows error msg: "Can not write to drive G: Joe's iPod"

Halfway thru the download process (1780 songs) from itunes to my ipod I get a windows error msg:
"Can not write to file G: Joe's ipod. All the data has been lost. Check for an error on your computer or network."
Getting the error msg: " Can not write to drive G: Joe's ipod. All data has been lost, your computer or network may have failed."
"Windows/ My computer" shows my ipod as drive G: and itunes starts up properly when I plug my ipod into my firewire port. About halfway thru the download (1780 songs) the transfer from itunes to my ipod stops and I get the above error message. (Never worked with USB). I am not on a network.
According to tech supt, I have:
-Installed Service Pack 2,
-Restored ipod to factory settings
-Installed update 5.0.1. Everything worked fine last Feb with the version 4 of itunes when I first loaded everything up.
Have tried to reinstall version 4, but no luck.
My ipod charges fine thru the firewire cable.
Any ideas?? Thanx anyone.

Hello, i am having the following problem...
"iTunes could not copy "Beethoven's Symphony No 9 (from "A Clockwork Orange")" to iPhone "Heywood Floyd's iPhone" because the file could not be read or written" [ ... and yes, Heywood Floyd is an avatar name..]
With this...
a. it occurs when I try to synch my iphone with iTunes.
b. I have tested the "Beethoven's Symphony No 9" files that I have found on my iTunes, and my iPhone, as there is a copy of "Beethoven_ Symphony No. 9, _Choral_" folder that is the concert from Bernard Haitink & London Symphony Orchestra;
c. This is where is get weird, a sort of Jack Torrance moment, they only file related to "A clock work orange" is 06 A Clockwork Orange - Ode to Joy.m4p...
So what is happening, and how can I resolve this, as I am not able to synch between my mac and my iPhone....

Check the media source drive for errors.

If iTunes is confused about what media is and is not on the device take these steps:
Backup the device.
Restore as a new device.
Restore from the earlier backup.

"file could not be read or written" files grey.

Trying to re-sync iPhone to mac, iTunes is up to date and so is iPhone but 80% of the songs on iPhone are grey and are unplayable.
When trying to sync, anywhere from the 1st song up to the 14th (there are lots more songs but it doesn't ever load past 14) iTunes freezes for about 5 minutes and the message "iTunes could not copy "song" to the iPhone because the file could not be read or written" appears.
The files it is talking about work perfectly when played on iTunes but still don't sync.
I have tried deleteing enough music so that I can sync the entire library and even restoring the phone but nothing has worked.

This is likely a problem with the drive itself. This error indicates unspecified I/O errors with the drive, which can be from a hardware fault, or a formatting issue. If the drive has valuable data on it, then try connecting it to another PC to get the data off, and then try fully partitioning and formatting the drive with Disk Utility. If this corrects the error then you should be able to use the drive again as it was likely a formatting issue, but if the problem continues then it is likely a hardware fault and the best solution is to be safe and replace the drive.

The audio file can not be changed! - help

I really need help. I just installed Logic Express 8, and I tried to import a song in order to edit it (as a lead in music bed for a podcast). Every song I import in says I am unable to edit it - "The audio file can not be changed! Volume or file is locked."
How do I unlock the file/volume in order to edit t? This is the only reason why I purchased Logic and if I cannot do this I spent a lot of money for no reason. Please help.

OK, basics first..
if the audio was 'bought' from itunes or some other download, it could have some kind of 'digital rights management' (DRM) on it. So you won't be able to edit anything, it's protected. Nothing you can do there.
Also make sure it isn't already open in another application that might be 'holding on' to it.
However, it could be something simple to do with protections on the file itself.
Locate the music file you imported on your harddisk click on it once so it is highlighted, now press cmd-i, or select file menu and 'get info'.
There are some settings here where one can 'lock' a file. There is a check box under the 'general' section that needs to be unchecked, there is also a 'permissions' section at the bottom of the 'info' window of the file.
Make sure you have read and write permissions.

I used pages to write my coursework, but when I saved it, pages crashed...
Now I tried to reopen the file. It shows "The document ___.pages can not be read - The Document Does Not Have A Valid Format".
I've looked through the forum to find any fix methond. I tried the "zip solution" -> changes the file entention as .zip file.
But the still can not solve my problem. it shows the zip file can not be open..

I followed the instriction, and changed to root to locate /.DocumentRevisions-V100/
I can see several ______.pages file under the ./DocumentRevisions-V100/PerUID/
From the "Date Modified" attribute, I can find several __.Pages files that what I want.
But unfortunately, when I tried to open these version files, it still shows
The document can not be read. The Document does not have a valid format....
