Files changed ( names)

Hi, I edited photos in Photoshop and saved them in a map. Now finisfhed, I did decide to make a catalog to better compare them. So in the finder I saw all my 800 edited photos in three different maps. I made a new catalog and swiped the three maps under the catalog. I think I tried syncing in Lr, but do not remember. The point is, that the three maps with PSD. photos edited and well, are empty now....... I can not find my files anymore!!!!! I am in big trouble as the deadline is for tomorrow.
I do see all files with different names now in the new catalog, but not anymore whith the three maps ( in dutch it says naamloos, which in englisch means noname.1 etc) So Lr did change the filenames and this was very important as it are photos of a sportsclub and alle teams are different.
Anyway, how can that the files are changed in name???? I would like to have the names back! And in the finder I want to see the photos back on their place ( I swiped them in to catalog, and now the maps are empty)

By default, Lightroom does not rename your files. Renaming your files happens only if you specifically instruct Lightroom to rename your files. So I don't really know what happened in your case, unless you had (accidentally) turned on a renaming option.
Futhermore, drag-and-drop into Lightroom should NOT cause the photos to move to different folders, but its been a very long time since I did that, so I'm not 100% sure. Again, I can't tell you what happened.
If the renaming of the files happened during import into Lightroom, I don't think there's any way to get the photo's original names back. You can move the photos back to their original folder inside of Lightroom, in the Folder Panel, by drag and drop; or if you haven't done any editing of the photos, you can also do the move in your operating system.
In the future, if you are going to use Lightroom, I suggest you use the command File->Import and select the "Add" option to keep the files in their existing location, and make sure that no file renaming has been selected. Of course, if the goal is simply to "compare" the photos, I don't think Lightroom is the best tool anyway.

hello, my company just switched to a system using multiple users on FCP and xsan. Every once and a while when a user selects a file , the file name and the file itself changes right before your eyes, to a file that is in the same column(finder). also , we have had instances were deleted files (or so we thought) have shown up in the duplicated file. while this is going on , it (the san) will not let you save a FCP project to it. It gives you an error of "unknown file type". the only fix seem to be .. reboot. any help would be great. thanks.

It is not the user names by themselves that matter but rather UID that is important. You can have the same names on multiple xsan clients that have different UIDs. According to apple Xsan best practices, you should ensure that the user assessing xsan volumes in fact have distinct UID's, hence the reason why a central user directory is highly recommended.

You also have the option of binding your Xsan nodes to a preexisting directory, either Apple's Open Directory, or a Windows Active Directory. Once you have your directory running and each user has a unique user ID, things will run smoothly. This is because Xsan identifies the user based on his or her numerical UID. When you buy a new Mac and create the first user, its UID is automatically set to 501. Imagine you buy five new G5s to plug into your SAN and you don't have a centralized directory running. All of the users could have the same UID and that could really mess things up.
This is very possible the culprit. Just because others have not replicated this same problem does not mean that you can eliminate it as such. We have installed over 100 xsan implementations, and every one has a centralized directory. Not a single one has ever demonstrated this problem.

Files changing names?

I saved a word document and when I went to open it from my Documents folder the name was different. Why did it do this?

Assuming that the all of the filenames in your directory are consistent
with the example you provided. Here is a simple test to show you how the filenames
will be modified. This step doesn't actually change the names. It just shows you what the filenames will be changed to if you run the 2nd script.

if the output from the above formats the names the way that you wish.
Then run the following to actually change the filenames.
for i in *.jpg

mv $i `echo $i | sed -n 's/\./_/p'`

Possibility to open a PDF file, change its name in the Finder, edit the PDF file inside (eg., using the yellow fluorescent marker) and then save it.
Now you cannot do it because you get an error.
Yet, that can be done virtually on any other Mac application.

Converting Video to iPod, can you change name of file

When you convert Video to iPod format, can you change name of the new file or put some "marker" so one can tell which is the orginal and which is the new file?
Currently it is difficult to tell between the orignal and the new file.

You'd probably be better off doing this sort of editing in iTunes, and letting it move the files appropriately.
Go to the preferences, Advanced tab, and check the box to 'Keep iTune Music folder organized'. Then any changes you make to song names or other info (within iTunes) will automatically be applied.

Using tie-classed to change name of file uploaded through FTP protocol srvr

I'm trying to use the extendedPreAddItem (or Post) method in an S_TieFolder class to automatically change the name of a file (an S_PublicObject) when it enters a Folder (via an FTP put upload).
I'm fiddling around with code like this:
AttributeValue val = AttributeValue.newAttributeValue(newDocName);
val.setName(Document.NAME_ATTRIBUTE);
rightpo.setAttribute(val);
But it does not work: in the FTP client the filename is indeed changed, but somewhere at lower levels the original filename is still being used...
Any helpfull ideas would be appreciated.

I'm aware of this... My ftp-client (FTP-Voyager) will prompt me if I "put" a file that already exists in the remote folder, and ask me to go ahead and replace the file, or cancel the put-operation.
However in this case the ftp-client sees file X' remotely and I'm putting file X, so it does not prompt me at all...
Stopping and restarting the FTP-client (in case it caches remote folder-contents...) does not change the behaviour.
Timewise this is what happens:
1) I put file X.
2) My S_TieFolder class (extendedPreAddItem) changes it's name into X'.
3) The ftp-put successfully completes
4) I refresh the remote folder contents and see the X' name instead of the original X name.
5) I re-put X (and would now like to have it changed into file X'').
6) Before my S_TieFolder code executes, something (I'm still suspecting the cm-sdk) deletes the X' file first... ==> the logfile does not show any communication with the ftp-client here now.
7) Then my S_TieFolder code executes and changes the name into X''.
8) I refresh the remote folder contents: File X' disappears, file X (just re-put) changes into X''.
More testing has shown that I'm also not able to delete these files (whose names have been changed by S_TieFolder): 'file does not exist' error.
I need to know:
a) If changing the files name on-the-fly using S_Tie class is supported at all.
and
b) if so, what am I doing wrong?

Changing name of Capture Scratch files

My Capture Scratch files have a lot of untitled files although I named the project. I would like to rename them to match the project name but when I did this and tried to reconnect FCE insists that the file name be the same. Is there any way to change the name of these files?

If you are not using the clip files in a project, you can just change the file names via the Finder.
If you are already using the clip files in a project, you need to be careful when you change the file names because changing the file name does not change the clip name in the FCE Browser. You will need to manually change both names if you want to keep things straight.
You can change the name of the clip file via the Finder; and the clip name in the FCE Browser by selecting the clip name in the Browser window and editing the name.
You can also change the file names via the FCE Browser; Control-click the clip name in the FCE Browser and select 'Reveal in Finder'; you can then change the name of the clip file in the resulting Finder window. Then also change the clip name in the FCE Browser.
In the reconnect media dialog box, you will need to UNcheck the option called 'Matched Name & Reel Only" in order to point to the clip file whose name you changed.
In the future, give your clips unique names at the time you capture them.

Keyboard not working (sometimes) when attempting to change file/folder name

Every now and then, my keyboard doesn't seem to work when I'm trying to change the name of file or folder. I can't isolate any particular context when this occurs. When it happens, the keyboard works fine in other applications.
Any ideas on why this happens?

Here's a description of what happens. Let's say I want to change the name of a file or folder on my desktop. I click the item, then the name, and the name becomes editable. Every now and then, even though the file/folder name is in the edit mode (highlighted or cursor inserted), when I try to type nothing happens (the name doesn't change). When this occurs, the keyboard functions properly in all other ways.
Again, I can't isolate the circumstances leading up to this. Any ideas?

I was successful in retrieving the file's name, appending date n time in it but now I want to send it back. How can I achieve this ? any pointers will be very helpful

Script for Automator to reorder text in file/folder name.

I have a folder full of pictures named by their first and last names. I need them to be renamed by listing them by last name first, first name last in order to get them alphabatized properly. Anybody out there have a nice Automator script for me to make this happen? I'm new.

We have a client who dumps data in one of our 2003 SP2 server. We need a script to copy a single file from this location to
one of our 2008 R2 server.Like in the source server we have
abc_Today'sDate_hexadecimal.csv (File Name)
Today
(Date Modified)
abc_YesterDay'sdate_hexadecimal.csv (File Name)
Tomorrow (Date Modified)
'abc' is constant in the file name where rest changes. We want this file, whose name is starting with 'abc' and created today to be copied to destination, preferably replacing the file which was copied yesterday.

you will be better off to start learning powershell, perhaps using this exercise as a practical example. So to start, you should type these commands in the powershell console:

if the documentation that this presents makes no sense to you, you will have to get past the "knowning nothing about scripting" condition first. If so, someone here will no doubt provide some usefu references...

What devices are you trying to connect to, and are they in pairing mode? Is the phone in pairing mode? The iPhone only connects to audio devices and to computers for tethering. You cannot use BlueTooth on an iPhone for file transfers to other phones or computers.
