Files copied from other PC getting "read only" permissions

I have a PC running Fedora and Samba and when I drag a folder from the Finder onto my desktop it gets "Read Only" permissions. I cant remember that this happened with 10.5.1 or Tiger.
Anyone having the same problem or know how to fix it?

Try clicking "File>Get info" on the file, and look at it's permissions. Clicking the lock lets you change them, providing you have the right credentials.

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • NTFS issue: video files copied from Arch won´t load on other devices

    Hi!
I'm having this odd issue... I'll start from zero:
I have a 1TB external HDD (usb3, iomega). It has an NTFS filesystem since it was always my Windows backup drive. Since I've buyed a Digital TV that supports video playback from external drives and almost any video format, I'm using it as a movie/etc device. Previusly I had installed Ubuntu... but since I've installed Arch, any video file that I copy to the external HDD won't work on the TV. When I try to reproduce those files copied from Arch on the TV it hags and reboot several times.
I don't know where to start. I've installed ntfs-3g-fuse package for mounting r/w without root privileges... and my user is part of "disk" and "storage" group.
    Any ideas?
PD: Sorry, I'm not an english speaker... If it's not legible I'll try to write it again.

Usually crash on access indicates damaged filesystem. For example drive was removed without umount-ing it.
For start you can run file system check on your drive from Windows - "chkdsk /f X:"
You also can run it as "chkdsk /f /r X:" to check for bad-blocks (though it is not so critical now days).
Keep in mind - NTFS is proprietary system so 'ntfsfix' from ntfsprogs in Linux could help sometime but do not hold you breath with it.
Better find Windows for Windows filesystem.
Or you can just recreate files system from scratch with mkntfs - all data on the drive will be lost, obviously. But you do not need windows for that.
    Regards,
    Eugene.

  • No write access to files copied from a CD-ROM

    Hello:
I have searched and found a few topics on fixing permissions on files copied from CD-ROM that are read only. I would like to know if there is a way to prevent the problem. I routinely get files burned on Windows machines and I can copy the folders and enclosed files to my desktop but both the folders and the files inside show up with "Read Only" permissions.
While it is possible to fix it, I would have thought that if they are copied from a CD-ROM to my desxtop that I should automatically have write access to them. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Repartitioning and reformatting will remove all the information on the drives. You will prefer to backup any data you wish to save. You can do that by transferring those files to one of the two drives using a Windows computer or by purchasing a third drive that can be OS X formatted to which the data on one of the Windows drives may be copied. Then repartition/reformat one of the Windows drives for OS X and copy the data from the third drive to this drive. Then copy the data on the remaining Windows drive to the now empty third drive, repartition/reformat the second Windows drive. Finally, copy the data from the third drive to the second Windows drive.
There is really no need for a Time Capsule nor would it be preferred since you will now have three perfectly good external drives to use for backups and/or storage.

  • Any other apps with read-only Keynote?

I have several Keynote presenations that I'm trying to memorize.  I have them all stored on my iPad, but the tempatation is too great to edit them as I go along.
Does anybody make an app that can present Keynote files (including the builds) in a read-only format?  Then, I could whip through these Keynote files without feeling the temptation to edit them as I go along (ie - I would spend more time reading the information).
    Thanks!

That will depend on what you want to do. The bare minimum I would install photoshop, bridge, and Acrobat(If included). When you get time and if you happened to purchase the full package, play around with Illustrator and InDesign. Then later on try the rest see what they do, figure out if they can help you. Each one can be uninstalled if you don't want it, so don't worry about having them all installed. As long as you have the room, why not try them.

  • Fat32 Shared from Mac - Folders Always Read Only?

I have a Mac Book Pro running 10.5.8 with a FAT32 Bootcamp Partition. I set up Windows Sharing so a computer running WIndows Vista can share this FAT32 volume on my Mac. The basic networking works fine, and I can open, edit and save C files in the Microsoft Visual C++ environment I'm using.
But, the compiler attempts to create temporary files during compilation and this fails. It complains that the folder is write protected. This is substantiated by the fact that when I show the folder properties for the folder in question, it shows "Read Only" in the "Attributes" section.
Thing is, using Notepad, I can create a new file and save it on these "read-only" folders without any errors.
So I'm mystified. Any thoughts on why the compiler wouldn't be able to create the temporary files?
    Looking forward to a solution,
    Mark

I am posting back here because I discovered the cause of the second problem mentioned in the above post. IE: the problem of misbehaving folders in windows.
First, some background. The folder structure is rather large and complex, so I created it using applescript and a text file with outline levels. Unfortunately, some of the outline titles (which became folder titles) ended in a space.
Apparently windows does not like folders (files too?) to end with a space. While this never affected my Mac, when I transfered the data and structure to the PC it went haywire. I did notice that the duplicate folders were not identical as I first thought, but rather were generated without the trailing space(s). Now it is just a matter of removing all the trailing spaces and it appears that windows can handle the folders.
However, every folder I put on the PC still says it is read only and I can't seem to change that. Any help?

  • Stuck on ISW installation step - Config of other master and Read only

I'm trying to figure out how to complete one of the last steps for my isw install. Stuck on this step:
Configure the Sun Directory Server plugin on every other master and read-only replica that manage users under o=myorganization.

2011 Macs do not have a PPC processor.   They have an Intel processor.  Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver allows you to modify the sleep settings.

  • DI API - accessing objects with Read only permissions

Scenario: I have setup a user in B1 with "Read Only permissions" on the Business Partner. When I log into the DI API as this user and try instantiating the BP object, I get a message "Loged on user does not have permissions".
Why am I getting this? Shouldnt I be able to instantiate the object and read the property values. i understand that I cannot Add or Update because of read only permissions.
Is there a way we can retreive values for users using the DI API or should the best option be to write a SQL statement.
    Thanks,
    Gopal

Requiring the user to have full authorization to instantiate an object is a serious limitation for the DI API. It makes it virtually useless. After all it is supposed to be OOP and all the trimmings isn’t it? It also takes a lot of control away from the user.
    +1
    Hi,
I have confirmation from B1 product definition, the DI API access for objects with Read only permissions will not be included in the 2007A version. It will be considered for the following version after 2007A.
There is a chapter called "Authorization Checks" in the SDK Help file specifying:
"SAP Business One performs authorization checks for the business objects and the infrastructure and meta data objects. If a user does not have full authorization to access the objects in SAP Business One, the user will not have permission to access the data belonging to the business objects using the DI API."

  • Prevent file deletion on server but allow read/write permissions

So, I have several iMacs that are basically public computers.  They will all access a shared server.  The machines need to possess all of the user permissions of a "read/write" user with the EXCEPTION of being allowed to delete.  As it is now, a random user could delete our entire server in two clicks.  So, I need to somehow secure our data while still allowing the "reading" and "editing" of files.
Here's what I need to do:
    •  Somehow disable the delete file function altogether (while still maintaining read/edit permissions) or
    •  Find some 3rd party app or workaround that prompts the user with a password dialogue box in order to execute the "delete" function or
    •  Somehow apply permissions to a specific folder on the server that enables read/edit, but disables file deleting by users
I set the permissions of my trash folder to "read only" however, this only prevents deleting local files and doesn't prohibit deleting files from the shared drive.
    Thoughts?

    I'd rethink the requirements.
The literal answer is that yes, you can mark the files as being undeletable.
The access control list setting via the command line chmod command is something akin to the following:
    chmod +a "groupname deny delete"
In practice, these same requirements do allow the shared files to be effectively deleted; via overwrite.  (This is why the Unix-layer file protections don't bother to differentiate write from delete access.)  These requirements also allow partial file corruptions, a situation which tends to be far more pernicious.

  • Get Read/Write permissions of application

    Hi,
I am developing one application by using FileConnection API. My requirement is,
Whenever user launch the application, Application will get the properties of user read data/user write data permission. if they set the permission like "Always Ask" then application will close otherwise application will launch.
For this, how can i get read/write permissions of application?. Please help in this query.
    Thanks & Regards
    Siva

    Hi ,
As the FileConnection API is restricted and need permission.
You have to set the FileConnection permission into the JAD file. Depends upon the mobile it might be possible that you have to signed the MIDlet.

  • Read only permissions

one of my testing team requested for read only permissions on database, so what are the permissions that i can grant to them. Just to see the database tables .....

Well depending on how often you expect this type of request to come up people often create a role to handle the grants.
    Two things to consider.
    1. Do you care that they can access any table on the database...that includes the system tables?
If not then you can grant them create session and select any table.
However, I find this to extreme at times, but often the "easy" way out.
    2. You can grant them select on only that tables you will them to be able to read.
    grant select on owner.table_name to user_name;
and of course the create session privilege.
Now people often find this to be a pain because for each new table they have to grant the select again. However, you can probably search google or create your own script that selects the table name from dba_tables and have it create all the grant lines in another script that you can run. Something like
    set pagesize 0
    set linesize 200
    set echo off
    set feedback off
    spool /tmp/grantsql.sql
    select 'grant select on '||&tableOwner||'.'||table_name||' to '||&grantingTo||';' from dba_tables where owner='&tableOwner';
    spool off
    set echo on
    set feedback on
    @/tmp/grantsql.sql

  • Files copied from UDF data dvd are Read-only

I have a bunch on data DVDs burnt on a pc using Roxio Easy Media Creator 7. These disks are UDF format and can be read perfectly on pc or mac. The problem is : if I copy a file to my desktop, it becomes owned by me but r-xr-xr-x. It's not a problem for me personally but other users I support have a hard time figuring what's wrong when they can't rename the file they just copied.
Is it normal behavior or am I the only one with this problem ? I was supprised not to find anything in apple forum about this.
The work around is to change permissions to read-write in the getinfo window + apply to included elements + password or use chmod but it's not how I'd expect it to work. And I don't know how to modify the default permissions given to files from an UDF dvd. Copies of files from iso9660 disks are read-write.
    3 PM G5s and 2 G4s   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't believe this is a problem of leopard in general. i can not reproduce this behavior with any of my afp shares. no matter how i connect (as an owner or as a guest) after I copy something to the desktop it gets standard 644 (not 600) permissions.
