Files corrupted maybe on import

I recorded two hours of footage today importing live from a camera straight into iTunes. It was HD footage. I've done this before but today when I was done...I just turned off the camera rather than selecting "Done" in iMovie. Well it didn't do the usual thumbnail creation and I now can't access those files. They are on my hard drive. The right size. But I can't open them in any program. How can I access these files?

My Sony HDR will often create problematic clips, if I leave it too long before formatting it, usually do it every 3 months or so, but it depends on usage.
When I've got a bad clip I will often try the conversion with voltaic which is a little more tolerant of bad clips but doesn't always work.

  • Missing songs / won't add or import files / corrupt id3 tags?

    Hey Folks,
I can't seem to get some songs/files to add or import to itunes...
My computer crashed while itunes was open. When I rebooted the itunes library was corrupted and all playlists and songs were missing.
    ... no problem...
I'll just add the itunes folder right... Which is what I did.
Problem is now a good 20% of the songs are missing. They are on the harddrive in the itunes music folder, but won't import or add to itunes.
I suspect maybe it has something to do with corrupt ID3 tags?
Anyone know the answer to this mystery?
    Thx

    I assume adding artwork is a tag-affecting change - but I can't
add on this track - it just reverts to the black image.
I take it the tags themselves are hidden. I see no direct
editing options for them although I read than they can be
set to different types - and there are utilities available to
    clean, fix, re-set, etc.
Ok, now I see your edit - this isn't an mp3, it's .aiff.

  • Canon 7D Imported Files Corrupted.

Every now and them when I import files created with a Canon 7D they show up as corrupted in Lightroom.
I can read and process the files using Canon's Digital Photo Professional.  The last time this happened
I deleted the files from the LR catalog then re-imported them and they were ok. This time that does not
seem to be working. I've tried to import the files from two different hard drives.  The files were copied
directly from the card to the two hard drives.
I've used digestIT to calculate the MD5 Hash of the files files on the card and after copying them to the
hard drives.  The hashes are the same so I'm assuming that the file copy did not corrupt the files.
I've also import the files directly from the card.  When I did this only two of the files showed up
    as corrupted.
Finally I import the files using the same card and card reader using my laptop.  Every thing works, no
file corruption.  The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit and LR 3.3 32 bit.
Any ideas of what may be causing this problem?  How do I fix it?
    System details:
    LR: 3.3 64 bit
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
    Canon 7D: Firmware 1.0.9
LR Cat: New catalog create with LR 3.3 64 bit.
Below are images of what the files look like in LR and DPP.  The last images is what happened
when I imported the files directly from the card.
    Thanks

    martin-s and DdeGannes thanks.
I think I have a better handle on what's happening.  I think my storage device is the problem.  I guess it could still be
the memory but I would expect the system to be unstable if this were the case.
I imported another set of photos today from a different card.  Sure enough one of the files showed up as corrupted in LR.  I then
    did the following:
    1. Attempted to open the file using DPP.  The file also showed up as corrupted.
    2.  Checked the MD5 hash of the file on the drobo against the file on the card.  The hashes were different.
This means that the file copy was bad.
    3. Removed the file from the LH catalog.
    4. Deleted the file from the storage device.
    5. Copied it from the card.
    6. Check the hashes to make sure the copy was good.
    7. Imported the file into LR.   The preview JPG still showed up as corrupted.
    8. I then attempted to open the file in the develop module.  It opened ok.  Made some adjustments
then when back to the library module and the preview JPG now looked fine.
I guess removing an images from the catalog does not remove the preview JPG from the catalog. Which
means that if the image is added back to the catalog the old LR generated preview may get reused.

  • Is there a cure for persistent file corruptions across the suite?

i am having terrible and consistent problems with file corruptions across the suite. for example…
1: i collected for output (indesign) – corrupted over 100 small images that were linked.
2: opened an indesign job and all linked files failed to update and could not be imported (simply would not import those files and were all corrupted).
3: had a hang in photoshop followed by a 150:30 error (would not open any of my applications). this prompted a clean install of system and adobe cs4 see below
4: most recently, had a hang in photoshop (photoshop will also no "force quit") whilst indesign was open. two of my image files corrupted and, most surprisingly, all my illustrator files that i had placed also corrupted (will not even open in illustrator any more). illustrator was not even running at the time, so, get this – a hang in photoshop destroys illustrator files simply because they are placed in indesign.
this last event has made me more certain than ever that there is a fundamental problem at the cs4 core.
    can anyone help?
    please note the following:
i am running a macintosh imac, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (latest imac), with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram.
before this last disaster, i had reloaded the system software (archive and install), and updated it all the way to version 10.5.8
i then uninstalled the creative suite, ran the cleanscript from adobe, reloaded the creative suite, downloaded all the cs4 updates
(so, latest mac, latest system, latest cs4 – all clean installs).
is there something i can do? or is this just a very unstable and disappointing upgrade – i have had nothing but problems from day one!
many thanks if anyone has any advice.

Please try this KB article's solutions, and report back on how it went for you. If you can provide details about any recent OS updates, backups, or migrations, that would help is nail down the root cause of the new rash of this error for Mac users recently:

  • File corruption with a very large .ai file

    A little background first:
I am a graphic designer/cartographer with 15+ years of experience. I started making maps in Illustrator with version 6 and have upgraded to every version since.
    My machines:
    2x Mac Pro 8-core 3.0GHz, 16GB RAM, 10.5.7
    Mac Pro quad-core 2.66GHz, 8GB RAM, 10.5.7
    MacBook Pro 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, 10.5.7
    Illustrator specs:
All machines have CS4 installed as well as Illustrator 10.
The 8-core MPs have the MAPublisher Plug-ins installed
The 4-core and MacBook Pro (MBP) does not have the MAPublisher Plug-ins
The problem I am having can be replicated on each of the machines. The MBP can't handle the file due to RAM. Since this occurs on machines that has MAPublisher installed and a machine that does not, I think we can rule out a plug-in issue.
    File specs:
The original file: version 10, file size (uncompressed, no PDF support, and no font-embedding) is 36.4 MB. There are no raster effects or embedded/placed images. This is strictly a vector file. Artboard Dimensions: 85.288 in x 81.042 in
The original file, converted with CS4, and then saved as a CS4 file: file size (uncompressed, no PDF support, and no font-embedding) is 97.9 MB.
    Brief Description of the problem:
I have tried to convert this file into every version of CS and it has failed every time. With each version, it has resulted in an unusable file for different reasons. CS-CS3, the file was completely unusable because of the opening/saving time. It could take as long as 3 hours to save the file. With CS4, this has been rectified and I once again tried to convert it. Upon re-opening of the 'converted' CS4 native file, the file is 'corrupted'.
The file corruption is not your regular "This file can't be opened because of: X" corruption. The file opens after a save/close just fine. It is just that parts of the file gets destroyed. To save space in this post, I have created a webpage that illustrates the problem that I am having:
    http://newatlas.com/ai_problem/
I have tried everything possible to make the file smaller and it is as slimmed down as I can make it. (Using symbols, styles, etc.) I have also tried to eliminate this as a font problem by replacing every font with an Adobe supplied font, cleared caches, etc. This does not work, so I think we can rule out a font issue. I have also reduced this file to contain no pattern fills, no gradients, and just used simple fills and strokes. All to no avail. I have also tried piecing the file back together into a new document by copying/pasting a layer at a time. Saving, closing and re-opening after each paste cycle. I can get about 95% of it put back together and then it will manifest the problem. The only thing I haven't done is to convert all of the type to outlines. This would not solve my problem since this is a map that I continually work on year after year. I also can't remove objects or cut the overall area of the map because this file is used to produce an atlas book, a wall map and custom boundary wall maps. You can view the entire file at:
    http://okc.cocpub.com
If I do not convert the legacy text, the file saves/closes/re-opens just fine. It just takes a very long time. So this leads me to think that the cause of the problem is the number of editable type objects that this file has. Ever since Adobe changed the Type Engine, I haven't been able to use this file in current versions of Illustrator.
If I could get this file to open, uncorrupted, I could finally get rid of Illustrator 10. Illustrator 10 does not have any problem with this file (and is still faster than CS4 in everything except selecting a lot of objects.)
I am posting this on the forums for any other opinions/ideas from the 'Illustrator Gurus' as a first step. I want to get in contact with someone at Adobe to see if we can address this problem and possibly get it fixed with CS5. I know that this is a user-to-user forum, but I'm not sure who, where and how to contact Adobe for this issue. Maybe someone on these forums can help with that as well.
Thank you for your patience for getting this far in my long post and I would really appreciate any response.
    Dave

    Thanks Wade for responding,
Did you try trashing your Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings folder in your User's Preferences?
Yes, I've tried deleting prefs. Basically I've tried to rule out any problems with Illustrator as a whole. This issue has also occured on a clean install of OS X and Illustrator on a new User Account with the opening of this file being the first task that Illustrator has. There is no problem with Illustrator per se, but I think it is more of a limitation in Illustrator based on the number of type objects.
You could also try saving it out of 10 as a pdf or as postscript and distilling it then open that in ai or place it id a blank AI document.
Did you try to place instead of opening it?
I haven't tried any of these since the resulting file would be utterly unusable. Basically this would create a 'flat' file with 'broken' strings of text (type on a path especially) and type being uneditable. (Now that I think about it, CS4 does a much better job of opening pdfs without breaking type.) I still think this approach is not really a prudent course of action since, as of now, I can continue to maintain this map in Illy 10.
In my experimentation, the results are as follows:
    1. Opening the file without updating the legacy type, saving the file as a new document, closing and then re-opening results in a file you would expect. Every object is where it is supposed to be. Downfall of this method: I absolutely need the type to be editable, especially the 'Street Type' since this type is actually used to create map indexes.
    2. Opening the file with updating the legacy type, saving the file as a new document, closing and then re-opening results in a file that exhibits the exact behavior that has been posted in the thread-starter. This method results in the 'Bruce Gray' type being the duplicated item.
    3. Opening the file without updating the legacy type, then splitting the file into layer groups and saving as separate files. Then opening the resulting CS4 files, updating the legacy type, copy & pasting (with layer structure) into a new document results in a usable file up to a point. I can get about 95% of it put back together and then the problem manifests. I have thought that it might be a "bad" object on one of the layers but I have ruled that out by: a.) All of the resulting sub-files (files that are portions of the larger) exhibit no problems at all. Usually our PS printers find issues that Illy does not and there is no problem in RIPing the sub-files. b.) If I change the paste order, meaning copying & pasting from the top-most layers to the bottom-most layers, vice-versa, and a completely random paste order, different objects (other than the 'Bruce Gray' type) will be duplicated. I've had one of my park screens, a zip code type object and a school district boundary be the duplicated object.
All of these experiments has lead me to believe that the Illustrator Type Engine is the main facilitor. I just don't think it can handle that many individual point type objects. I know CS4 can handle the number of objects, based on the fact that a legacy type (non-updated) file works.
I am almost entirely sure that Illustrator is working exactly as it is supposed to and that the vast majority of Illy users will never run into this issue. This file is by far the largest file that I work on. I would just like to be able to use an Intel native version of CS to continue maintaining this map.
On a side note: About three years ago, I tried working with this file in Freehand MX. Freehand initially would open the Illy file without a problem. I could work on it but when I would save it as a Freehand file, close it and re-open it, I would get your standard File Corruption. It would partially open, give me a corruption dialog, and open the file as a blank document. I alwa ys knew there was a reason to use Illustrator over Freehand for making maps.

  • CR2 files corrupt or unsupported

Hey there! I am hoping someone out here can help me!
I just received the CF cards from my second shooter at a wedding yesterday. They were shooting with a 5D MK II, which uses CF cards. They were shooting RAW, so the file format is CR2. I am trying to put their images into lightroom with no success, I am getting an error message of unsupported or corrupt file, oh dear!! I have never experienced anything like this before! and I am not a Canon user, so I am hoping it is a compatibility issue.
I use a NIKON with SD cards and I don't have a card reader to plug into my imac, so I put the CF cards into my PC (which has a CF slot.) I copied all of those files onto the desktop and then onto an SD that was large enough to take all of her images, and I put that into my Mac to import into lightroom. This worked great for all of the 8gb CF cards, but there was one 16GB card that I cannot import into lightroom. In the original file it is only displaying the default CR2 thumbnail, not the images. When I try to import into lightroom it says 'cannot import, unsupported or corrupt file' I have tried importing into photoshop, it also says unsupported file, and I have also tried converting it through DNG converter with the same issue
I have fully updated versions of Lightroom 5, and Photoshop CC. I updated my camera raw just incase, for bridge. I just cannot get the files to display! These files are obviously incredibly important to me, and I am really hoping there is a solution to this If anyone knows what I can do I would be so grateful!!
    Thank you in advance!
    e

DJ_Paige: Thank you for the response! I plugged the CF in directly to PC and tried to access the files in bridge with no luck
BUT ... there is good news! and I am writing this so that if anyone else has this issue, they should be calm and not panic!! hehe! ...
Forum Readers: I asked my second shooter to come around with the equipment she uses. She uses a moshi card reader, and when she used that with my iMac ALL files copied over with no issues at all!!! All files are there and they are beautiful! We are VERY happy!! It was just some bizarre compatibility issue with CF and my PC, and then obviously in transfer it just didn't want to cooperate! In the meantime I downloaded some recovery programmes as a backup, and I was able to recover some images from the corrupted copies, just in case! So there are ways for anyone who really has a card that becomes corrupt
But for other peoples future reference, Do not panic! Use quality card readers before freaking out that you have lost images! hehe!

  • EA3500 HDD File corruption

    Hello, everyone!
I have recently bought a cisco EA3500 router for my home network and i am pretty surprised to see that a router from the world leader in the networking domain cannot perform as expected.
The first problem i had was that the network (wired and wireless) was dropping from time to time for a couple of minutes with the power led of the router blinking. I turned off the log feature of the router and it seems that until now the problem is resolved.
Now, the second and, at least as annoying as the first, is that i have a 640gb usb hdd connected to the router, formatted NTFS.
It seems that every now and then a file gets corrupted, that is, it is transformed into a folder! And it cannot be recovered without pulling out the hdd and using a 3rd parth software for file recovery.
I have the latest firmware. Should i switch back to the classic firmware instead of the "fancy" new one? I really need my files on that drive, so i cannot risk loosing them in this random manner.
    Thank you.

    mihai.vasiliu wrote:
I have installed the older, classic firmware. The internet drops seems to have been fixed, but the HDD file corruption still persists! Please help! I lost some important files from my HDD. I cannot believe this is happening on a cisco router.
I quickly learned that the EA3500 does not have the processing power to handle a large disk.  This is especially true if there are a large number of files on the disk.  Save yourself some aggravation and connect the disk to a 24/7 computer.  I no longer use the EA3500 USB port for anything.  It was unstable even with a 2 GB thumb drive.
It was Cisco in name only.  Now that Cisco has sold Linksys it is just a Linksys router.

  • Advice on .jpg files that will not import

I have .jpg files that are not importing into LR even though they open fine on my Mac. Is there anyway I can find out why LR will not import them? Any advice for dealing with images like this?
    Thanks.

Usually it's due to Lr perceiving some file wonkiness that your Mac is less picky about (Lr prefers to keep details of such to itself...). ExifTool could probably fix it, without re-creating image data, if you knew how, but it might be simplest to just re-save the file using any software that will work, maybe save in tiff format, to prevent quality loss due to re-jpeg'ing a jpeg, and maybe metadata will be re-written in a format more palatable for Lightroom.

  • How can I get rid of files that cannot be imported error message

Hello, this is my first post. I am a new mac user. I have imported my jpgs from an external hard drive which was in the most part successful, however, 14 of the files appear to be corrupted and every time I open iphoto9, I get the error message, '14 of your files could not be imported, would you like to import them now?' I have tried choosing both options yes and no and it then writes error message telling me it has created recovered photos folder. When you go to this folder it is empty and every time I restart iphoto, I get the same message. I have tried deleting all the files and re-importing only to find that the number of corrupted files has now doubled. I have also deleted the iphotos library recovered photo folders to no avail. I have tried creating a new library and importing the files to that but the same problem occurred. How can I get rid of this repeated error as I am now up to recovered folder number 47! Help!

    P Robbins
Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
quit iPhoto and right click (control click) on the iPhoto library (in the pictures folder by default) and select the show package contents command - find the import (or importing) folder and drag it to the desktop and launch iPhoto - you should be fine now - open the import(ing) folder on your desktop and if there are any photos you want import them then trash the folder

  • Canon5d problem processing to jpegs, files corrupt or truncate

I'm baffled. I am using both CS2 & CS3. I have a mac dual 2.0 with OSX 10.4.11. The camera is a Canon 5d. Here's the deal. When I batch process or even single process, some of the files develop truncated. The thumbnails have between 10% to 90%of the image visible, it varies. There is no pattern, sometimes it does every file sometimes maybe 1 out of 10. Some files still open as Jpeg's others have the file corrupted message and then open exactly like the thumbnails, a portion of the image the rest grey. If I try developing the image again, it usually corrects on the first try, sometimes 2nd or 3rd, it always eventually develops complete. This does not happen in the canon raw conversion but I don't like it. I had all the current updates in both CS2 and CS, I just reinstalled CS3 without updates, still does it. I tried it using a 10d, no problem. I have 5.5 gigs of memory. Any ideas? Thanks Lance.

    Re routine maintenance:
I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.
I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.
This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) may NOT help. Try it anyway, though.

Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.
If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.
    Also, from: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
    NOTE:
There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.

  • Help - sporadic corrupted data when importing photos from iPhoto

I am importing photos for a slide show, and every once in a while (frequency varies but sometimes as much as every other photo), I have a strange problem. Several frames will just be mixed up colors, nothing discernible at all, as if some of the data has been corrupted. Re-importing the photos usually solves the problem so I don't think it is any problem with specific photos. Any ideas? Thanks!
Using iMovie HD 6.0.2, all other software is also up to date per Software Update

    ok, next idea:
you're using an iBook => harddrive space is limited...
tell us, how much free space is on your hd...
you shouldn't "overcrowd" your drive, 80% filled should be max,
because all apps use widely socalled "temp-files" - never seen in Finder, but neccessary (you probably have heard of that rule: iDVD needs 10 - 15GB to work smoothly...)

if you download things from sites like mosh etc, those files sometimes do get corrupted. it is best if you actually try to download them from the source and the ones that you can install via pc, install via pc maybe that will make a difference for you. you can go to fring site and fring will send you a text message, now once you open the link this app should download without any problems. and yes your are right it is highly unlikely that it is a hardware issues. try that and report back.

  • File Numbering in Auto Import

This probably isn't the right forum for this, but maybe someone can help. Is there a way to control the file numbering on auto-import? When I set up to shoot tethered, files that are autoimported don't number consecutively. There seems to be no pattern, sometimes all odd, sometimes not, sometimes just skipping numbers. If I start at 1, shoot 30 pictures, my last file might be numbered 67. I'm shooting through Canon Capture, placing photos in a folder on my desktop and autoimporting from there. Lightroom 1.1 (though it happened in 1.0), Mac OS10.4.10. Thanks.

To get rid of them you will need to find that auto import folder and delete them. If you search for the name in spotlight, then do Show All, when you click on a name you should see the file path to it at the bottom of the finder window, like this:
If you double click the name of the enclosing folder it will open and you can see the file to delete it. In my example if I want to get rid of roykitchen.jpg, double clicking the roykitchen folder name will show it to me.

  • .THM Sidecar Files Not Included When Importing Video Directly From Camera (Canon 7d)

Lightroom (3.4) has always copied the .THM sidecard files when I have imported video files from my Canon 7d using a card reader.  However I am on a trip and have forgotten my card reader so I have been copying directly from the camera and for some reason Lightroom is not copying the .THM sidecar files and thus I am missing all my valuable metadata such as camera, exposure, focal length, ISO, etc. associated with the video files.  Very frustrating!
    Any ideas?

Also because I do not have a card reader I cannot grab the .thm files myself.  Mac OS X (and I think Windows) just see the camera as a "device" and offer to import but do not give me direct access to the files.  Maybe if there is an app that will allow me to do that when the camera is connected I can work around this for now.

  • Help - "Unreadable files:.... The following files could not be imported..."

Tried to add five .jpg photos to an existing iPhoto album and it raised this error:
    *Unreadable Files: 5*
*The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).*
I tried to open them with Photoshop and re-save them, different size - no go.
iPhoto is set up to managed the photos in the library, when I look in the iPhoto library > originals > 2009 > directory, I see the photos there. They open with other apps just fine (preview.app, photoshop, browsers, quick look, etc.)
How do I get these to show up in iPhoto? What did I do wrong? Or, how do I tell what's wrong with these files, as they appear to be just fine.
    Thanks for the help!!!

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
If the new Library works correctly then it suggests that the other library is damaged:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD
