Files Created in SMB Missing via AFP

Hello all,
We have files created by an automated process on a Windows 2003 Server, and copied to a shared folder (Windows and Macintosh.) When a user connects to that share via AFP, they don't see those files. However, when they connect to the share via SMB, they can see it. Re-creating the share in Computer Management on the Windows server makes those files re-appear in AFP. However, any files that are created by the server since then will be "missing" again via AFP. We have verified the share permissions are the same on both sharing methods. This happens on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. Is there anything else we can try? We've been connecting via AFP to this share for a long time, and don't know why this issue started happening.
Thanks.

If this is even possible, it sounds like a really bad idea due to the way AFP and SMB differ in file locking when files are in use. Your best solution would be to configure clients to access the same SMB share the server is.
I am assuming that since you are asking this, you do not administer the SMB share.

  • Files wont copy from Server via AFP to local Drive

    Hi All,
I'm having trouble copying iMovie project files from an xServe to a local drive. I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.9, and what happenes is when I open the mount and find the file, I drag it accross the the users home folder-> movies folder and copy it. Problem is the source file is 3.14 gigs, and when it copys it copys a file thats 997KB is size, everytime and says its done sucsessfully. Obviously the file wont open.
    Can anyone Help?

I guess your having some permisssions lingo. iMovie projects are folders that are presented by the Finder as if it were files.

  • Cannot create a SMB Application File Share in 2012R2

I am trying to create a SOFS on Windows Server 2012R2 but cannot create the application file share via Failover Cluster Manager.
I have a created a Clustered Shared Volume using JBOD and storage spaces.  The volume is formatted on the JBOD disks using REFS (I understood this is supported for CSV in  2012R2).  The environment is being built using Data On Storage
9220 CiB which is certified for Storage Spaces.
I open Fail Over Cluster Manager (tried both remotely and locally on file server).
    Connect to the Cluster.
    Expand the Cluster
    Choose Roles
Right Click on "SecSofs01Cap" which is of type "Scale-Out File Server" and choose "Add File Share"
    Choose SMB Share - Applications
    Choose Next
Select "SecSofs01Cap" which is of type "Scale Out File Server"
Select by Volume is grayed out and I see no volumes presented. The browse button in "Type a custom path" is grayed out as well.

    Hi,
It is supported to use a ReFS volume as CSV in Windows Server 2012 R2, but not ofr Scale Out file server. See:
Use Cluster Shared Volumes in a Failover Cluster
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612868.aspx
CSV provide a general-purpose, clustered file system, which is layered above NTFS (or ReFS in Windows Server 2012 R2). CSV applications include:
    - Clustered virtual hard disk (VHD) files for clustered Hyper-V virtual machines
    - Scale-out file shares to store application data for the Scale-Out File Server clustered role. Examples of the application data for this role include Hyper-V virtual machine files and Microsoft SQL Server data. (Be aware that ReFS is not
supported for a Scale-Out File Server.)
If you have any feedback on our support, please send to [email protected]

  • CS 3.0.1 will not open InDesign files created in 2008  - it says a plug-in may be missing.

My CS 3.0.1 will not open InDesign files created in 2008.  It says a plug-in may be missing.  I did have a computer crash since I last opened it.  I've tried changing the extension to inx, but that doesn't work.  I cannot get the file to open.  Can someone help?

The OP is using CS. He/she could be trying to open CS2 or later.
Simply changing the file extension will do know good and only an INX exported from CS2 will work.

Numbers file created w new version of Numbers on my mac and then transferred  via Dropbox to my ipad: file cannot be opened by iOS version of Numbers

    Hi Jocomo,
That's correct. Dropbox does not handle Numbers 3.0 for Mac and Numbers 2.0 for iOS documents well at all. They will probably fix this.
But why are you using Dropbox for this?  Numbers has built-in iCloud integration for the very purpose of syncing documents back and forth.  It's much easier than using Dropbox even if Dropbox could handle the new Numbers format.  And it's now quite reliable.
To enable iCloud with Numbers on your Mac:
In System Preferences>iCloud make sure you have Documents & Data turned on:
And after clicking Options, make sure you have checked Numbers.app:
On your iPad you need to make sure iCloud sync is turned on in TWO places:
      Settings>iCloud>Documents & Data>Numbers
      Settings>Numbers>Use iCloud
If you have entered the right iCloud credentials on your Mac and iPad, Numbers will then sync back and forth. It's much easier than putting in Dropbox and then having to Open in... , etc.  You can of course still keep backup copies of your documents in Dropbox if you want.

  • Can connect via SMB but not AFP....

    Hi Guys,
Firstly, please let me apologise in case im being really stupid (highly likely! )
I have a mixed environment in which i have some iMacs (running Mavericks) and some Mac Pros (Running Mountain Lion 10.8.5).  When connencting to the XServe using AFP, some get an error. I will go throught the steps i follow.
    - From Finder, Go>Connect to Server..>afp://10.***.**.**>Connect
    - I enter the login credentials and select Connect
    - It gives me the option to select which volume to mount.  I select Volume 1 and select OK
    - Error - There was a problem connecting to the server "10.---.--.--". You do not have permission to access this server
When trying to access the server suing SMB instead of AFP (using the same credentials) it connects fine.
The issue with SMB is that for some reason, some of the folders wont show through SMB (no idea why)
The problem is affecting one imac on Mavericks and two Mac Pros on Mountain Lion.  If i attempt to login using SMB on any machines which work fine with AFP, they will connect but after that, they wont revertback to AFP.  They get the same error as above.
Any idea whats causing this?If any of the above causes confusion, feel free to shout at me and i will try to clear anything up.
    Really appreciaste the help guys!
    Pami

You'll need to connect your modem to your AEBS WAN port, configure your AEBS with the Airport Admin Utility, setting up the PPOE to properly log into your modem connection.
You should set up your mac to us DHCP (not PPOE).
THis should allow you to use either the ethernet port or wireless from your AEBS.
    I hope this helps!

  • Emailing a link to a file on an SMB server

How do you create a link to a file on an SMB server, to send to other people (e.g. in email)?
In a large corporation with mixed Mac/Windows network we use Samba to allow Mac OS X 10.6 to access the file servers.
This works fine for basic operations such as browsing the servers, or copying files, etc. However, it isn't clear how to create a link to a file on a server, such that it can be emailed to people.
Creating a link to a folder works ok, via this syntax:
        smb://servername/SomeFolder/AnotherFolder/
When the email recipient clicks on the link (which appears by default as blue underlined), OS X automatically mounts the server as a local volume, and Finder  opens a window so that they can see the folder contents.
But when trying to create a link to a particular file, via this syntax:
        smb://servername/SomeFolder/AnotherFolder/FileToShare.mp4
It doesn't work. When the recipient clicks on the link, Finder appears to mount an empty fictitious volume called SomeFolder/AnotherFolder/FileToShare.mp4, containing no files. It is as if the URL parsing support for Samba links only supports referencing directories rather than individual files.
By contrast, on Windows sharing a file can be done via this syntax:
         \\servername\SomeFolder\AnotherFolder\FileToShare.mp4
And clicking on the link would automatically open the file (e.g. in whatever application is associated to play the video, edit the document, etc).
Is there any way to create a clickable link to a file (not folder) on an SMB server?
    Matthew

Thank you for trying to help.
However, that utility does not solve the problem as far as I can tell. Regardless of whether the link text is typed in manually, or is 'snagged' via some utility, it still doesn't work in the case I was mentioning. All options in PathSnagger require that the drive is already mounted, as far as I can tell. And once it is mounted, PathSnagger generates the following strings for various options:
         Snag Path Windows:          \Volumes\servername\SomeFolder\AnotherFolder\FileToShare.mp4
         Snag Path Unix:               /Volumes/servername/SomeFolder/AnotherFolder/FileToShare.mp4
         Snag Path HFS:          servername:SomeFolder:AnotherFolder:FileToShare.mp4
         Snag Path File:          file://localhost/Volumes/servername/SomeFolder/AnotherFolder/FileToShare.mp4
Note that none of these retain the original server location and protocol (smb://servername) because the volume is now mounted. As such, if emailed to another recipient, in general they do not work.
Perhaps my original question was not clear. Is there any way to create a clickable link to a file (not a folder) on an SMB server, so that the link can be emailed to other people, and email recipient clicks on the click, the file is opened? (And server volumes mounted automatically as necessary)
On Windows it can be done via a link such as:
         \\servername\SomeFolder\AnotherFolder\FileToShare.txt
On Mac, the corresponding support for Samba URLs seems incomplete. A link such as:
         smb://servername/SomeFolder/AnotherFolder/FileToShare.txt
does not appear to work even on the sender's computer, and even if the server is already mounted.
The expected behaviour is that when a user (e.g. email recipient) clicks on the link, it should mount the server (if necessary) and open the file (in the example above, FileToShare.txt). Unfortunately, this does not seem to happen.

  • Printing in Illustrator 5 with a file created in Illustrator 4-crash!

I have a brand new system running on Snow Leopard (10.6.2). Most of the files I'm working on were created in Creative Suite 4. So when I go to open a file created in a Illustrator 4 program in my new Illustrator 5 program, it crashes when I go to file>print. I don't think it's the printer even though that's a little older because when I print a pdf from this computer, everything's fine. HELP!

Hope the software update helps. (I miss my Mac). But if it doesn't you may do what I have to do, which is create a page in Illustrator 5, then copy/paste all to that new page, and resave. Prints out fine then - but 60% of my files created in 4 will not print via 5 unless I do this.
... all my printer drivers and the rest are updated...

  • Finder not showing files in an SMB share

Ok, I think I know what I need to do, but i'm not sure where to look essentially. I have a user in my office that connects to a share on a PC file server called Community. When looking at the share in finder it seems to be bugged, and it shows like an old cached view of what the share USED to look like. If I open a terminal and do an ls everything shows up like normal. The way I've been able to temporarily unbugg this is by clicking on Go->Go to folder and then telling it to go to \volumes\community\myfolder and then it corrects the view and shows the correct list of folders. But the next time she boots her mac and connects to the share - old view again. Is there a file for finder that is caching this info in her profile that I need to delete somewhere? This seems to be the issue, but I'm not sure where to look for this. Worse comes to worse I suppose I could always give her a clean profile on her mac, but I hate to do that for something so trivial.
(Just to note here, there's no hidden files or anything - If we go to another PC or Mac everything shows up fine, first try, no problem. It's just this one machine having this issue)

giving this topic a bump. i've tried the same share via AFP and SMB, both have shown files before, but now only show folders in Finder.
incidentally, i tried mounting the same share using NFS and it works, all files and folders are shown in Finder.
in either case, all files and folders show up from Terminal.

It is working fine in reference tenant. But using the same payload its giving error in another tenant.

  • No '.trc' file created using SQL_TRACE in 10g Express Edition

Hi All - am attempting to create a trace file on my PC using 10g Express Edition under the HR account.
After using alter session set SQL_TRACE = TRUE, I can check the database parameters:
select name, value from sys.v_$parameter where name in ('sql_trace','timed_statistics','max_dump_file_size','user_dump_dest','_rowsource_execution_statistics')
    TRUE
    C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ADMIN\XE\UDUMP
    UNLIMITED
    TRUE
    TRUE
However, if I attempt to run any database query, e.g.
    select a.employee_id,a.first_name,a.last_name,a.job_id
    from employees a, jobs b
    where a.last_name like 'S%'
    and a.job_id = b.job_id;
, the query runs fine but no .trc file is created within C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ADMIN\XE\UDUMP, whether I then disable SQL_TRACE or not.
The only trace files created here appear to be when my PC starts up.
I've granted full control to that directory via Windows to all accounts so write permissions should not be an issue, and I can save files to this directory via windows.
Extremely frustrating - any ideas why?
Much appreciate any assistance with this.
    Mike

Well, I don't appear to have a context menu, I just have 5 options after logging into Express Edition - Administration, Object Browser (a poor man's TOAD), SQL which leads to SQL Scripts, commands and query builder (I use commands), Utilities and Application Builder.
As an aside, I have created an explain plan table in the HR schema as well as running plustrce as SYS and granting the plustrace role to HR with the admin option (this was done in an attempt to use AUTOTRACE). Autotrace itself does not work - if I attempt to 'set autotrace on' within XE SQL Commands under the HR account I get ORA-00922: missing or invalid option.
Appreciate this is another issue other than the failure of TRC file creation but I suspect XE does not behave as a standard Oracle set up. Well, not for me at least anyway !!
    Appreciate your time on this.

  • HT200160 Connecting via AFP to an older NAS device?

I have tried all of the "workarounds" that have been suggested and none of this works.
I recently got a new Mac (running 10.8.2) and I can no longer connect to my LaCie Big5 Network2 NAS as a "Registered User" via AFP.
I can connect as a guest via AFP but when I save files to the Big5 they are "Invisable"?
I can connect as a registered user via SMB, BUT when I do a lot of the files that are on the Big5 appear as Unix files and I can not work with them.
I have tried all of the suggestiuons that I found on this forum relating to entering comands in Terminal, but I may not be doing this correctly.
I have never used Terminal and I attempted to set up a "root" account, but the buttons that the instructions tell me to click on are not there?
Is there something wrong with what I am doing?

Well, I would use this procedure rather than the first one which is very convoluted, difficult to follow, and not well explained. Just my opinion.
You don't require a root account. That is circumvented by the use of "sudo" prior to each command line in the procedures.
Frankly, I'm assuming that the LaCie product you have now is fairly old. Maybe replacing it would make sense. Alternatively, you could look for an enclosure to replace the one you now have. Remove the drives and install them in the new enclosure. You may find suitable products at OWC.
Out of curiosity what is your NAS used for? Are you the only user? What wouldn't you be able to do if you simply had a drive connected directly to the computer?

  • How to determine who is connected via AFP in WORKGROUP

I am running a WORKGROUP configuration leopard server on a MP early 2008. Using the server widget I can tell if there are users connected but I have not figured out how to determine Who is connected and how to contact them if I want to reboot the server. Moreover, how do I determine what users are doing? The AFP log is turned off in this config and I can't get it to come on. From the command line I could use serveradmin to find out who is connected but in the workgroup config it is not clear if it is OK to run serveradmin since the GUI counterpart "Server Aministrator" is forbidden unless you upgrade to the advanced config. Does anybody know if the CLI serveradmin is OK to use in the WORKGROUP config or know any other way to determine who connected via AFP and SMB and what files they have open? This semms like a terrible security risk without knowing who is doing what.
    Thanks
    -Chris

Just in case others have the same question, I have determined that the CLI tools can be used to query the file services without any apparent detrimental effects while using our leopard server 10.5.3 in a workgroup configuration. Hence the names of AFP users can be determined from the command line by:
sudo serveradmin command afp:command = getConnectedUsers | grep name
and the smb users can be found with:
sudo serveradmin command smb:command = getConnectedUsers | grep name
    Hope that helps

  • How to find files created by Apps in iTunes 11.1.4.62?

Unable to find a way to view and manipulate files created by Apps. with 11.1.4.62.
Also missing is the display of the screens in devices containing app icons which can be repositioned.
Have these features been purposely removed from 11.1.4.62 ?  Do I need to reinstall the previous version to get them back?

I think you're asking how to update your apps on iTunes on your computer.
The screen from which you update looks like this:
To get there, go to "Apps" as shown in the upper left, then click "Updates" in the top center.  All available updates will be displayed.  If there are none displayed, click "Check for Updates" in the lower right.  If some are in fact available, that button will change and say "Update all".
