Files don't actually Compress but look like Archive.zip

New issue: I never had trouble archiving/compressing files before.
I choose the files to compress, it goes through the motions, even gives me an Archive.zip file, but that file stays the same size as the combined files. Doesn't actually compress anything.
Can't find this issue answered elsewhere!

What kind of files are you attempting to zip?
Some files, such as photos, music and video are actually compressed already. In fact something if you attempt to compress the files again. they actually get larger.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

In FINDER, the IMAGES section of 'All My FIles', what is: myDocuments.cannedSearch? Looks like images of jpegs & PDFs I viewed, even if I had deleted it.

I previously posted a similar question, but I was not clear in my message. I know that files (categorized as PDF Documents, Movies, Presentations, Spreadsheets, etc.) in "all my files' in the FINDER are all my files and if I delete them, I am deleting the original copies. However, the IMAGES category has thousands of images of PDF and jpeg files, even ones I had deleted. I do not have thousands of pics or pdf documents. It looks like these images are files I had opened, even if I deleted the files. I want to clean up files on MAC. Any suggestions? See info below regarding IMAGES category of ALL MY FILES. When I clic on INFO, it says it is a saved query.

I actually just noticed the "media" option is no longer listed along the left side of Finder. I think that is where I accessed iphoto and my other picture folder.
There is no media option in the Finder. That only turns up in Open... Dialogues like this:

Looks good in firefox browser but looks like hell on upload to my server

I created a webpage, used a simple template of 'header' 'content' 'footer', inserted an image into the header, inserted a table then image then table in the content, and nothing in the footer. it looks great when previewed with Firefox or Explorer. But when I upload it to my server it looks like hell. The image in the header is off to the side, my content is overlaying the header. the left side of the template is dark gray. What could have possibly happened?

You may have forgotten to upload your .css file.
Without a link to the actual page, it's hard to say what else might be wrong.
If you uploaded your css, one thing to look at is the case structure of your files. Servers are CaSe SenSiTiVe, your local OS is not, so a link like " _css/one page with header.css" will work with a file named "One Page With Header.css" locally, however, online the link would break since the two names (one all lower case the other with "camel case" structure) would be considered different files by the server.
Be careful with file names for that reason. They really should be simple lowercase alpha numerics with no spaces (use underscores or hyphens instead).

I no longer have an "organize bookmarks" option. I want to arrange them my way, but can't find the file to edit to make it look like I want it to look.

I used to be able to edit a bookmark.html file and the bookmarks would stay where I put them. Now they seem to have a life of their own and move in places I don't want them.

"Organize Bookmarks" has been renamed to "Show All Bookmarks" in the bookmarks menu.
For info Firefox has not stored bookmarks in bookmarks.html since Firefox 2, it now stores them in places.sqlite

Made the switch to an mac from a PC. I imported the files but looks like my folders are protected and i cannot access them. Any thoughts on how to remove permissions?

What you can do is this:
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the command line prompt and paste the following line:
sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn`
Put a space after "-gn`" and drag the folder that has all the imported folders into the Terminal window.
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.
This should give all the files and folders the same permissions as your Home folder so you can access the data. If the folders with your files are not contained in a single folder, then create a new folder on your Desktop (COMMAND-SHIFT-N) and drag all the imported folders into this new folder.

EMLX mail message files don't appear when I look at the folder in mail

I have a new imac. I am having troubles running mail. I imported into mail mail folders ((on my mac)). When I open mail I can see some folders imported correctly with all messages within intact but some folders though appearing as mailbox folders are empty of messages. I look in finder at the directory and can see emlx files in the folder. I cannot get mail to recognise those messages.

Did you ever find an answer to this. I just found the same problem.

I have converted some NEF files to DNG without compression but the conversion were performed WITH compression!

As LR5user correctly notes, dng ALWAYS uses compression. You can only choose whether you want lossy compression or lossless compression. If you did not check the lossy compression checkbox, it will use a lossless algorithm. You do NOT want to avoid this as you are only wasting disk space if you don't use that compression. There is no loss of information. You should end up with files that are somewhat smaller than native raw files as the compression is somewhat more efficient than what camera makers use in their cameras in general.

DVD burnt in BEST QUALITY but looks like a VCD when played on DVD player

Made a 115 mins movie in Final Cut Pro, exported it to Quicktime and made a project in iDVD 6. If I check the quality of the movie before I burn it, it is all right, I select BEST QUALITY on iDVD setiings before I burn it but, then when it's ready, I check it on the DVD player and it is in very low quality, like if it was a VCD, it shows little squares on the images. Not the whole video but several times during playback. I've burnt dozens of videos like this one before and it never gave me taht problem but the last 3 videos I've burnt it shows it.

Set it to Best Performance if you are concerned about the highest possible visual quality w/in iDVD6 (keep in mind you cannot exceed 1 hr. in this particular mode).
Also remember to burn from the disc image at 4x or slower using Roxio Toast or apple's Disc Utilities. I recommend using Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R for best results.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone here. The information on here has been valuable and will be using it once I start again. My rebuilding journey has taken a dramatic turn and now i have to go down the BK path. Sometimes we need to take a few steps back to get going forward again. It's a small setback in an otherwise long process.

I filed in 2007 and quite frankly, I cannot wait until 2017 to see this completely removed from all my CR's. Ten year's is SOOOOOOO much longer than the unbearable seven for most derogs. Think about it, it's almost 50% longer, and not counting your childhood or teenage year's, stays with you for about 1/5th of your entire adulthood. Even to this day, being 8 year's old, it still affects my ability to get some CC's and rent in some places. It's like a very dark cloud that's always there. No matter what you apply for, questions are always asked, and in many cases, regardless of your score, you'll be declined. CH 7 should not be taken lightly, and used in cases where there's absolutely no other way out of debt. In my case, I was involved in a business with a really bad partner and was on the hook for over 2 million in personal guarantees. I had no way of ever paying this debt once we split and the company was dissolved. Not trying to talk you out of it, but letting you know this course of action will follow you for a long time in one way or another. Best of luck.

Cursor bug (cursor work but looks like frozen beach ball)

I'm running 10.6.2 on a 3ghz core duo imac. I have two accounts on the machine and it's only happening on one side. The cursor will not change back to a normal arrow until i launch an application like firefox. I repaired the disc and permissions. didn't make a difference. Any clue what this could be? should i delete some prefs/plists?

How do I get iTunes 10 to play movie files as their actual size?

In iTunes (10), I have several iTunes purchases/rentals as well as movie files I've created on my own and converted into .mp4 format. My problem is that I really would like to play these files as their actual size, but can't seem to get iTunes to cooperate. I'm sure there's an easy way to do this and I've tried the quick-keyboard command (command-1), but without luck for both the iTunes official files (m4v) and the .mp4s. Any help is very appreciated.

iTunes 10.5 (on 10.6.8) doesn't have a "playback in separate window" option.
Fortunately, the effectively hidden right-click "Playback Video in Separate Window" option is still available, and this choice holds for future videos.
I can keep my iTunes window on my left monitor and playback videos on my larger, widescreen middle monitor.
