Files from Mac Classic/Perfoma 5215

Hey all-
I have two old macintosh computers that I would like to copy the files from (To another computer) before wiping the hard drives. We have a Macintosh Classic running OS 6 and a Performa 5215 running 8.6. I have been reading a couple past posts regarding transferring files from old macs and have come up with a couple possible solitions. If you think they are feasible please let me know.
1. Use a direct connection between the classic and performa using a 8-pin apple connect cable (incorrect name for the cable, it was used to connect the computers to a printer). I have read about this being used, however, I am not sure how to accomplish this. I do have this cable
2. Use the modem on the 5215 and instructions here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=22229) to perform a direct modem to modem transfer of all the files I need to another modern computer.
The problem I think I will face is I don't have a modern Mac to work with. I switched to PC's in early 2000 because that is what work gave me. Unfortunately my macs languished. Would this modem to modem connection work with a modern PC running Windows XP Pro? Or would I have to look for additional options?
Auxiliary parts that I have for the macs:
Basically all I ever had was an external modem for the Performa and a couple printers. I don't have any ethernet stuff or apple talk stuff. I'm sorry if I have left out something thing you would need to help diagnose my problem. If you need further specs or inventory of parts I have, please let me know. Thanks for any help!

Yes, you can connect the Macintosh Classic's printer port to the printer port of the Performa 5215 by means of a Mac printer cable. AppleTalk has to be on on both Macs. You would enable File Sharing on the Performa and then connect to that computer from the Classic (via the Chooser). The fact that you are running System 6 on the Classic may or may not lead to compatibility issues. If there is a problem, (with enough RAM) you could boot the Classic to System 7.5 using a Network Access floppy (download here) and connect from there instead.
The KB article # 22229 was written for a Mac-to-Mac transfer. The principle would be the same for a direct/local modem-to-modem Mac-to-PC transfer. An appropriate terminal emulation application with file transfer capabilities (e.g. HyperTerminal) will have to be used on the PC. Please note that two randomly chosen modems may have difficulties negotiating when connected locally. A simple home-built line simulator can help.
Alternatively, with two phone lines, you could connect via the public telephone network (no line simulator in that case).
Another alternative (if the PC has a serial port) would be to plug a Mac modem cable (MiniDIN-8M to DB-25M) into the modem port of the Performa. Connect the other end to a (DB-25F to DB-9F) PC null-modem cable, which goes to the PC.
Finally, there is always the possibility of using 1.44 MB floppies for any transfers (copy to PC-formatted disks on the Performa 5215).

  • Transferring large volume of files from mac to PC?

Hi i have a mac with osx 10.4.8 and a pc, i need to transfer a large amount of files from mac to pc (around 200GB)
Now i have lots of external HDs which are all used by either the PC or the macs. the ones formatted for the macs cannot be read atall by the PC without some expensive software, the PC formatted one i have appears to be readable on the mac, but when i try to copy the files onto it or change anything, i am not able to change/add anythingn due to permissions problems.
Not sure what to do, i have quite a few HDs with plenty of sapce, but if they are all in the wrong format i cant really wipe/reformat them easily with files on them, nor do i want to buy yet another HDD just to transfer some files....

how to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes ???
as i want to use my ipad for official use as well...please suggest..

well to be 100% technical, no you didn't but that aside, it good to know there are ways for people to transfer music into the default apps without iTunes, if they have a need.
I tend to use 3rd party apps for documents, like your mentioned iExplorer etc, which are handy.
I see from a search the two "apps" you mentioned are not iOS apps, which I had assumed, SyncPod and FreeSync are apps for your computer, that would explain their access to the default Music/Video apps.
I had wondered how Apple had allowed iOS apps in the store that could get around the sandboxing in iOS of apps.

  • How do i save files from mac pro to an external hard drive

how do i save files from mac pro to an external hard drive

Your external drive is formatted NTFS which OS X can read from but not write to. You can either install third-party software on the Mac to enable writing to the drive or repartition and reformat the drive for exclusive use with the Mac. If you don't need to move files between a Mac and a PC, then I would recommend the latter solution.
    Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.2
NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5.3
    To repartition:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • New to Mac....can transfer files from Toshiba to Mac. But can't transfer files from Mac to Toshiba??? Can anyone help please?

New Mac user......own a new iMac and iPad and still use a Toshiba Laptop. Can transfer files from Toshiba to iMac but can't transfer files other direction?

Are you doing these transfers over a Network connection, the systems are networked together over your Home LAN? Or are you doing it with an external drive?
If an external drive Mac OS X can READ Windows NTFS formatted drives but can NOT WRITE to them. So you can co[py files to the drive on your Win PC and READ them on the Mac but Mac OS X can not Write to that drive so you can't copy files from Mac to that drive.
For an external drive to work on both systems, be able to Read and Write from/to that drive, it has to be formatted either FAT32 or exFAT.

  • Copying files from Mac to PC network shared drives.

Copying files from Mac to PC network shared drives.
We have shared mounted drives in AIX Fusion that we can pull files from and copy to the mac, however we can not copy files from the mac to the drives.
“Error in user parameter list (-50)” With MS DOS-Formatted Volume.”
The drives are mapped on the mac using SMB. We can go to the files on the mac and use “save as” and this works and saves them on the shared drives.
We can not drag and copy them to the shared drives. Every time it fails and we get the above error. We can create folders but not move any files.
When we look up the error, it is referring to certain characters that can but used in a Max OS X filename and are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. We are not using any of the characters not allowed.
The drives have all the basic set up in AIX, RWC. All the PC's we have can drag files to and from all our shared drives.

Either install software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives, or MacDrive on the PC, or reformat any drives you'll be using to share files between the computers as either FAT32 or exFAT.

  • My mac disk is full and i cant transfer files from Mac to USB. saying the format is not good, how can i change the format and what happened to the files i have on USB?

my mac disk is full and i cant transfer files from Mac to USB. saying the format is not good, how can i change the format and what happened to the files i have on USB?

Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available.
