Files From Old Computer Cannot Be Opened On New Computer After Migration

After migrating User Data (i.e.: documents, downloads, music, movies, etc.) from my old iMac to my new MacBook Pro, the data cannot be opened because on my new MacBook Pro I "do not have permission to view the contents." Is there a way I can be authorized to view my data on my MacBook Pro? Should I give up on Migration Assistant and simply transfer my information using a USB drive or other device?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Your best bet may be to start over: erase your internal HD, reinstall OSX from the disc that came with your new Mac, and use +Setup Assistant+ when it restarts, to transfer your stuff.
See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum) for detailed instructions.

i have moved from a mac pro to a mac mini,
Mini now has mavericks and latest iLife stuff, I clicked import, was all good, then at end, no videos came across.
Is Mavericks,/iPhoto having a compatibiltiy issue with some video formats....???

Please describe exactly what you did. In moving to a new machine no importing is involved. The best way is to simply connect the two computers together and drag the iPhoto library from the old one to the pictures folder go the new one and launch iPhoto

  • Transfer all files from old computer (windows 7 ) to new computer windows 8.2

setting up new computer (windows 8.2) from old computer windows 7

    Bill, welcome to the forum.
Here is an explanation as to why you aren't finding any information on Easy Transfer in Win 8.1:
"Windows Easy Transfer is weakened in Windows 8.1
Another program that’s been around for decades, Windows Easy Transfer seems to be on its way out in Windows 8.1. Windows Easy Transfer provided an easy way to move your files from your old computer to your new one by connecting an Easy Transfer Cable, a portable hard drive, or providing a network location.
Windows 8.1 accepts Windows Easy Transfer files stored on a portable drive, but it doesn’t support the Easy Transfer Cable or the network location. And the Windows 8.1 version of Windows Easy Transfer can import only old files; it can’t export files to another PC."
Also, here is a guide that will help you determine which programs that you are using in Vista will be compatible with Win 8.1.
Personally, I have upgraded my computer from Win 7 Pro to Win 8 Pro and then to Win 8.1.  I haven't found any programs that don't run in Win 8.1.  I hope you have the same fortune.

  • Transferring Files from Old Computer to New Computer

I upgraded my iTunes to 9.1.1 on my old computer (and new computer). On the old computer, I have everything organized in playlists. When I transferred all my music from my old computer to my new computer (via ipod), my playlists do not show up. All the songs are in Music on the top of iTunes. Is there anyway to transfer the itunes exactly as it appears on my old computer to my new computer? Would a USB transfer cable take care of this problem? Please help

    Hi there,
what you did is only transfer all of the MEDIA files into your new computer's iTunes. There is no problem with doing this, but all the media files include are well, the media obviously, and the tagging info (which displays name/artist/album/etc.) If all you do is move the media files onto the new computer and load iTunes, a new copy of iTunes (with no playlists/ratings/play counts and new settings) will load up, and put your content in it.
If you wish to preserve your playlists/ratings/etc, you need to import the iTunes Library File as well. This is by default located in your iTunes directory. So instead of just moving everything from "iTunes Media" (default location), it is best to move the ENTIRE "iTunes" folder, with the Library file and your media files.
However, one trick may still work. If you transfer JUST the Library file over (iTunes Library.itl), transfer it to your new computer, REPLACE the current iTunes Library file with the old one (so delete the new one, put the old one there). Open iTunes while holding SHIFT down the whole time, until a screen pops up asking you to find a library. Select choose library, and go to the location of the Library file we just moved. Select it, and if all goes well your playlists should be there!
You might come across one issue however, and that is if you changed the relative location of your media files. For example if you USED to have it on an external drive "my Music" and now it is on the internal drive in a folder labeled "iTunes Music", the computer may not be able to find your songs because it is looking in the wrong place. If that happens, and you are willing to lose your play counts and ratings, it actually might be more of a time saver to start over again and make your playlists from scratch.

  • Transferring files from old computer with fire wire

I'm transferring files from my old computer to my new one. The old one has three hard drives. Everything from the startup drive transferred OK over fire wire, but the new computer doesn't see the 2nd and 3rd hard drives on the old one. Is there a way to link these? Thanks!

Click here and follow the instructions, setting up FireWire networking from System Preferences if desired. FireWire Target Disk mode will only connect to the master ATA drive on the ATA 0 bus, and will shut down the computer if there's nothing at that location.

  • Can't transfer files from old computer to new

Hello, Bought a new MacBook Pro and have old pictures, files, apps and fonts on an old Powerbook.  Migration utility allows me to move entire files over, but would like to move only specific files. I remember once opening an old computer much like a hard drive and drag and dropping what I wanted. Any ideas.
    Thanks,

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Transferring files from old computer freezes on Mac Pro

    Hi everyone-
I'm new around here and I'm having a problem. I just bought the Mac Pro and right now I am trying to transfer my files from my older computer to this new one. My old computer is a Powerbook G4 Laptop, and I want some files to be on the Mac Pro. So I attached a firewire cable to the Powerbook G4 and to the Mac Pro, and I booted up the Powerbook G4 and held the 'T' button down like you are supposed to. The Powerbook then shows up in the finder window on the Mac Pro, but then all of a sudden the Mac Pro freezes. Even when it didn't freeze, I clicked on the Powerbook G4 Hard Drive icon in the finder window, and some of the drive's contents load but then I just get the spinning colored pinwheel. And nothing happens! Why is this happening, can someone help me out? I tried it earlier and it worked, but now it is repeatedly not working. Thanks!

If you have both computer connected to the same internet connection there's nothing to do cable-wise. All you need to do is…
    1) Go to the Sharing System Preference and turn in Personal File Sharing on one of the system, preferably the PowerBook
    2) Go to the other system and select the Network menu item from the Go menu (in the Finder)
    3) You should now find your other system here and double click on it
    4) You should now be asked to log in, just use the log in details you would use to start the other system
    5) Now you will be asked which "volume" you want to connect to (select the one that is names you login if you only want to copy documents)
    6) You will now have access to the other computer with a disk mount on yur Desktop

  • Moving files from old computer to new

I have purchased my daughter a Powerbook 1.3 Ghz and need to move her files, applications, etc., from her old Powerbook 400 mhz to the new one. I have an external firewire drive that will make this easy, I think, but I am concerned about what exactly to move so that her safari bookmarks and her iTunes playlists, preferences, etc., all make the jump.
I'm sure there is a trick to doing this. I just don't know what it is.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

  • Access files from old computer backup (time capsule)

    Hello,
I had a MacBook Air that was stolen in a break-in to my apartment. I could not afford a new Air, so I bought a cheaper MacBook Pro. I've been using the Pro for a few months and just realized that I have a recent backup of my old computer (MacBook Air) on my Time Capsule.
How can I access this back-up to retrieve some files (pictures, documents) without doing a full restore of my new MacBook Pro and erasing everything on my new computer?
I tried using a program called "Back in Time" but it won't give me access to the Air's backup because it was a different computer.
Is there any program that will let me access the files on the Time Machine backup of my old computer so I can grab these files?
Thank you so much for the help!!!
    Dan

  • Transferring files from old computer to new one

I just purchased an HP Envy 700 series and am trying to transfer my files from my old computer.  My problem is that the old computer has a fried motherboard so I put the old hard drive in an external case and hooked it up to the new computer to transfer the files.  When I try to access the "users" folder on the old drive I get a message telling me I don't have permission to access the folder.  Is there anything I can do to get past this?

The OS on the old computer was Windows 7 Home and the new one is Windows 7 Pro.
I have developed a work around for my problem.  I put the old hard drive in an external case and then hooked it up to my laptop.  I then lower the User Account Control setting to its lowest setting (after I turn off my access to the internet) and then I am able to access all the files in the account that was blocked before.  It is tedious trying to transfer many GB's of data using a thumb drive but it is getting done.

  • Moving purchased music and files from old computer to new computer.

My old computer was recently stolen and on it I had quite alot of music that I had purchased from the itunes store. Is there anyway to recover some of the music that I have purchased through the itunes store and put it on the itunes on my new computer?

If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link you'll be able to email your query: Customer Service - iTunes Store Support
If you have an iPod that still has any of your purchases on it you'll find details in this article on how to transfer them to the computer: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

  • Help transferring files from old Mac 10.3.9 to new Mac 10.6.1

Hi - I just bought a new iMac with Snow Leopard and I am trying to transfer my old files from my iMac running 10.3.9. I connected a FireWire cable between the two and restarted the old iMac while holding down the "t" key, using Migration Assistant on the new iMac. Migration Assistant kept saying that it was waiting for the old iMac to restart, even though the old one HAD restarted. I looked on the forums and saw that I should try to run Setup Assistant from the Utilities folder on the old iMac. But there isn't a Setup Assistant in the Utilities folder.
So I am at an impasse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some of the items I've found via searching suggest to avoid transfer or migration of older
files from the ancient 10.3 over to the newer 10.5 or 10.6. And when the old computer is
a PowerPC, the new Intel-based Mac may not see or be able to use some of the items.
The older Setup Assistant is supposed to do for Panther 10.3 what the newer Migration
Assistant does for Tiger 10.4; to an extent. The results from the older system are limited.
There is a way to have the new computer import some of the older computer's user files
and account info into it, before its first run; but with a leap so great between 10.3 & 10.6,
    the results overall won't be as satisfactory as just running the new computer totally new;
going through the setup and upgrade processes independent of the old Mac altogether.
The Apple Support- Snow Leopard page should have some upgrade and migration help
info on there which may be helpful: http://www.apple.com/support/snowleopard/
It would appear that the instructions for migrating from an older Mac to one running 10.5
or 10.6 apply to the older computer, so the Panther software may be secondary if it really
matters at all in this process. See this document, and wonder along with me... This is not
quite the same as a migration assistant; but you don't need FW Target Disk in either case.

In the past, I've done a bit of upgrade and some migration action and found that overall,
the new OS X seemed to work a lot better with nothing old involved. That's just me!
And I'm sure each individual's mileage may vary...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do you move Lightroom files from old iMac with Lightroom 4 to new iMac with Lightroom 5?

Recently bought a new iMac and installed latest version of Lighroom 5. Tried unsuccessfully to move my picture files from my old iMac with Lightroom 4 to the hard drive of my new computer which has latest Lighroom software. Ended up with 2,000 pictures that are duplicates and the keywords did not transfer with the picture files. Can anyone advise best way to resolve this problem?

How do I move Lightroom to a new computer? | The Lightroom Queen
That is a very good tutorial. Installing a newer version of Lightroom on the new computer will involve Lightroom creating a copy of your old catalog that is compatible with the new version. But it should be very painless.

  • How do I transfer files from old computer to the new one

I have bought the desktop and used migration asiitant to transfer files but nothing came through, how do i transfer files

Your best option of migrating was when your turned on the new computer for the first time using Setup Assistant. Part of SA is it asks if you are migrating from another Mac, you apparently passed that and missed that opportunity. You then must have used Migration Assistant which is similar to SA but with one critical difference. Migration Assistant migrates everything to a new user account whereas SA would not. Log out of your existing account and into the new account and you will find your stuff. If you want to start over (highly recommended) you can. You will need to carefully read Lion Setup Assistant tips beginning where he discusses Second Chance.... This will take some time but in the long run make your migration more seamless.
