Files grayed out when "saving as"

Hello everybody,
I've moved from windows to mac recently and i'm doing my best to understand the way this OS works. There are some things that really do not make sense to me as a beginner.
Anyways my problem is that when i want to "save as" a file everything in the directory seems grayed out. Looks similar to how hidden files are on windows system. I can't even select the file, and i need to overwrite a lot. I've checked permission of the folder, files, of the directory tree, checked whether its locked, but no success to sort the issue out. The problem happens on every program, from adobe products to word and even some of the apps are gray and un-selectable (some seem to be fine). I'm not sure if this was from the beginning or i've messed up something accidentally. I've searched google for the past couple of hours with nothing to suggest a resolution to my problem.
Ive attached an image for your reference.
The only thing i can think of, that i've been messing with, was to enable (using the terminal) the option to have folders before files.
Kind Regards
A.

restarted, everything seems fine... Anyway this post is useless...

  • Save option grayed out when saving as???

I am just beginning the tutorial for FCP 5.1.2 but don't seem to be able to save the new tutorial project as the button for "save" is gray, not blue and therefore inaccessible. Also note that the format button in the same window with project as the default is also gray and inaccessible. Any thoughts as to how to get past this road block?
    thanks,
    Ol Pappy Joe

Thanks for responding. I think I have it all copied to my hard drive, at least the tutorial folder (Final Cut Studio Training) and something called Video-TS - they are both on an external LaCie and I am running the tutorial DVD off an external DVD player while performing the tutorial on my G5 where the FCP app is located. After I navigate to the Tutorial folder on the LaCie and find the Edit, then Project folders and try to save, the buttons for saving are gray???
    Any more thoughts?
    Thanks again.

  • Tables dropping out when saving PDF files

I have saved a document through writing to PDF in the Print dialog and also by exporting as PDF, but with the same results. In a 40 page document 3 of the tables get dropped out when saving so all I get is blank space where they should be.
Perhaps related is an interesting printing problem. When I print the entire document these same three tables are missing. But if I go back and print only the pages they appear on then the tables will print.
    Any suggestions?

Happens with a Konika-Minolta Magicolor, a Brother 1470-N and an HP Laserjet.

  • Items grayed out when they should not be

I have some apps where files that should be available for opening are instead grayed out when they shouldn't be. They never used to be grayed out until recently, and they are a correct file type. (Open is set to "All files" not just the file extension, so it's not an oversight).
Which part of the OS is responsible for choosing what items will be available in a file list (i.e. not grayed out)? I'd like to rebuild it since it seems to be corrupted. Also my LaunchServices seems to be messed up as well because some apps are not available for certain file types "Open With" when they ought to be. Terminal command? Disk Warrior? TinkerTool? Thanks.

    Hi,

  • "Access Control - Do Not Inherit" Grayed out when setting up a backup on Server 2008 R2 when trying to use remote NAS

    I see one response here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c99eead0-e2fc-4c83-8cb2-959d03512667/server-2008-r2-dc-backup-greys-out-do-not-inherit-option-for-file-share-backup
But it makes no sense to me. Running that command doesn't do anything.
How do I make the box stop graying out when setting up a backup with the GUI interface? This should be really simple I would think and for some reason the backup utility is graying out the "Do Not Inherit" option so I can backup to the NAS
device that has access control enabled in order to backup to the NAS.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
From this article, it mentioned that it is by design that we cannot choose "do not inherit" in backup schedule when backup target is a remote shared folder.
    Checklist: Schedule Automatic Backups
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732540.aspx
If you use a remote shared folder, make sure that the folder is available, that you have write access to the folder, and that you are a member of the Administrators group or Backup Operators group on the computer hosting the folder. Each time you create
a backup, it will overwrite the older backups so that you will only have one backup at a time.
The backup will inherit the access control list (ACL) permissions of the folder.
For the account it required, as mentioned above, it should be "a member of Admin group or Backup Operators group, and it should have write permission on target folder".
Also map a network folder as a drive will not help show the mapped drive letter in backup destination. It is still a remote shared folder.

  • Why are files grayed out in finder on MacBook ?

I am trying to upload a file (receipt pdf to insurance website) and the file is grayed out when I browse to select it from the website and it won't let me select it. When I look at in Finder it is there not grayed out.  When I am on the website most of my files are grayed out. I am new to the Mac world. What am I doing wrong?  Thanks.

Do you have the finder option to show all File Extension turned on? Could be the file you are selecting is not a PDF file? Or the file you need to Upload to the website page has to be in some other format than PDF. Like a Text file.
In most cases any file that is not in the correct format for a program you are using, or as in your case uplaoding to a website, either don't show up or are greyed out making them NON selectable.

  • Screen phases in/out when saving MS Office docs

I just downloaded Yosemite Sunday night 3/8/15, and the screen tends to phase in/out when saving MS Office documents. My Mac tends to run extremely slow when saving, and deciding where to save the file. I've never had a problem with this before.
I'm using Macbook Pro early 2011, 16GB, 256 Solid State Drive. Never had a problem with this before.

If you can hear the HD spin up, then it is, indeed, sleeping and it's got to wake up before it can get busy. In Energy Saver preferences, do you have Put HD to sleep when possible checked? Does this happen whether the target file is on the internal or external drives or only the external? And if it happens when the file is on the internal, does it happen if the external is disconnected or powered off? Finally, did either the enclosure or the HD come with software to control it and did you install it?
I've seen a few brands of external drives spin down when they haven't been accessed for a while and that's sometimes built into the drive's firmware. Some manufacturers offer software to defeat that so you might check to see if WD does. But external enclosures aren't always ventilated properly so running the drive all the time could get it pretty hot (Seagate used to do that and required that spin down to keep from getting cooked).

  • What causes areas to be grayed out when viewing in Acrobat 9?

What causes text to be grayed out when viewing in Acrobat 9?
Douments which were fine in Acrobat 9 suddenly have areas blacked or grayed out.  The same thing happens if opened in Acrobet Reader.  Is there a setting that causes this.

It could be that the text is an image.
Try going to Edit>Preferences>Page display>Page content and information and check the box hat says "Display large images".

  • Import button remains grayed out when adding existing folder to LR 4

Greetings.  I'm following the steps in the following link from Adobe:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/3.0/Using/WSE828B644-9097-46ab-98A7-E2719BBB6647.htm l
The final step, after selecting the folder I want to add, is to select Import.  Except, the Import button remains grayed out.  I'm not sure what to do in order to select Import and add the folder I already have.
    Thanks,
    Mike H.

Thank you for the information.  Yes, that seems to make sense based on what I've discovered using LR 4.  Still trying to come up to speed.  Appreciate everyone's help with their tips and insight.

Folders per se cannot be imported - only pictures (or movies) in a folder can. So, you have to select a folder containing at least one picture or movie (all pictures and movies found are automatically selected when the import dialog opens). This is probably not the case for the folder you want to add, so "no photos found" is displayed in the dialog center and the "Import" button is greyed out.

  • Should be the bluetoot symbol grayed out when the bluetooth is turned "ON"or it should be highlighted in white like rest of the active symbols are? Please unswer this simple question clearly. Thank you.

My blutooth symbol on the new i-Pod 2 is grayed out when the option is turned "ON". Shouldn't be highlighted white like the rest of the symbols are?

when blue tooth is turned off in settings, the symbol does not show at all.  when BT is turned on in settings, but there is no connected device, it will show the symbol gryed out.  When BT is on, and connected to an active device, it will show as bright white.

  • Why is the "open with" option always grayed out when I click on a file link?

For example, when accessing an email account with firefox and I click on an .mp3 attachment the "open with" choice is always grayed out. This issue is not exclusive to email attachments rather all file links that I click on any site give me the same result. I am using MAC OS X Mavericks.
How can I restore the "open with" selection?
    Thanks for your time,
    Chris Woods

You can try rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions#Resetting_download_actions
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • File Export is grayed out when Photo Book selected - worked yesterday

I have been assembling a Photo book from various scanned photos. In order to share a preview before send it of to be printed, I used the File>Export option to produce a Quicktime movie. It worked very well but today I wanted to change some of the movie settings.
When I tried to repeat the exercise, I found that the File>Export option is now grayed out and I cannot access it. The options to Share to web and iDVD are still available and I can print to PDF.
I cannot think of anything that has changed since yesterday. I tried a reboot but it made no difference.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Dave

    David:
Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist. What are you trying to export, the book? That option is not available from the book mode. Only from albums, slideshows or the main library. Did you do the export from a slideshow you made of the photos used in the book?
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • All files on new iPod are grayed out when connected and viewed in iTune 7.6

I just bought a new 80GB iPod classic. I have been able to get everything loaded and it works fine (I have to get used to the new interface but that's OK). What is odd is that when I click on "music" on the now fully loaded iPod contents list of some 1,500 songs, all of then a grayed out and I cannot do any sort of renaming/re-arranging/deletion whatsoever. No doubt this is a simple setting that I am just not hip to. It did ask me to update to iPod software 1.1.1 when I put it in and I did.
Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks
    Theo

Sounds like your iPod is in auto-sync mode, which greys out the contents and won't let you change things. That's normal since you're expected to make such changes to your iTunes library and re-sync your iPod to capture the changes.
If you want to manage the contents directly on the iPod, you need to select the option "Manually manage music and video", found on the general iPod summary when you connect to iTunes.
