Files in Illustrator CS4

I'm working on a project and went to open a couple files, but an box pops up that says AN UNKNOWN ERROR HAS OCCURRED. I went to other files and they all say the same thing. What's happening with my Illustrator CS4 files?

OUCH! I don't have an answer for you but I would like to commiserate. I just went through a similar wacky problem with corrupted prefs and I know how frustrated you must be. (see my lost decimal precision post)

Unmanaged File in Illustrator CS4

Hi
Can anyone tell me what is meant by and Unmanaged File - this appears in the status bar in Illustrator CS4 when I create a new document.
I'm thinking it may have something to do with colour management/colour profiles but would appreciate any clarification.

Unmanaged refers to the color management. If you don't assign any specific profiles, the program will use whatever is your default preference, hence the documents are considered unmanaged. It's just a firndly reminder that what you see on screen may not correctly reflect color metrics or settings on otehr machines...

Can you link an imported psd file in Illustrator CS4 instead of embedding?

Seems that in CS4 the default is to embed a psd file. I have been unable to find a way to link if I want to. CS3 seems to default to linking which I prefer.

In Illustrator
File > Place
select your file but don't hit OK
at the bottom of the window you will see 3 options:
"Link"
"Template"
"Replace"
check link and hit Ok.

I posted similar question in the Mac Creative Suite section and Acrobat and I was asked to move my question here to Illustrator so i hope no one gets angry with me. I wasn't sure where to post because I'm not sure what direction to go.
I want to create an interactive 3D PDF, the kind with the 3D controls which allow you to rotate the product to view it at different angles and sides.
What I have are DWG or DXF files from SolidWorks that I would like to use in Illustrator to apply artwork onto the CAD frame. Using the Illustrator 3D tool I can rotate the product but I have no way to export the U3D file format which Acrobat requires to generate a 3D PDF file.
How can I accomplish this? I need some direction to go in as far as bridging applications together in order to make this work.
Is there an Illustrator plugin to export U3D?
I basically need to apply graphics to a CAD frame first in Illustrator then get it into an interactive 3D model.
I tried downloading Blender but I can't even get it to open my DXF file.
I tried downloading Esko Artwork Studio but that plugin tells me I don't have a Structured Design File to work with.
I've read online hear about Acrobat X and Tetra but I'm having a hard time connecting the "software dots" to get where I want to go from what I have to work with.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, you don't need Illustrator at all... To output a 3D PDF, you will need tools liek Deep Exploration CAD Edition or the export features of the respective CAD programs in which the drawings were created. And STEP and IGES are both standardized CAD interchange formats not specifically tied to a specific CAD program...

Does anyone else have trouble opening Autocad dwg files in Illustrator CS4?

When I try to open some .dwg files from Autocad I get the message " Version of this LPF file is not supported" Can anyone help with this? Does the problem lie with the (autocad) sender or with Illustrator? Stumped and needing to get on with work!

How to reduce file size in Illustrator CS4?

I'm having troubles with the size of my files in Illustrator CS4, My files always ends with sizes near 100mb!
I made some tests:
Create a new doc (7x5 cm), type some text, save: 1mb
Place an image (PSD file: 12mb), save without embedding: 8mb
Embedd the psd file, save: 16mb
Delete psd image, and place JPG (2,5mb), save without embedding: 8mb
Embedd the JPG, save: 15mb
I0m using the save with compression option.
If I uncheck the compatibility with PDF, then my file goes from 15mb to 8mb, but it's too big anyway, my image is only 2,5mb!
I don't know, I think I'm doing something wrong or illustrator is the most inefficient program that I ever use.
Why if my file without the image is only 1mb, and my JPG only 2,5mb, when I put them together the .AI goes to 15mb???? that's 500% the real size of my files!
Please I need help with this.

Think about it for a minute and you might find the answer yourself? Ok perhaps it has something to do with the fact that a 2.5 mb jpeg, which is a compressed file size, is something like a 15 MB uncompressed file. I know but it is a compressed file but Illustrator has to uncompress it and make it pdf compatible turn off the pdf compatible option and see what happens.
I just tried it myself and sure enough a 4.1 jpeg place in AI makes the file 13.1 MB the uncompressed image is 15.8 MB
without pdf compatible the 4.1 mb file in AI is now a 1.1 MB file.
It makes sense to me perhaps if you think about it it might make sense to you as well.

Broken Illustrator CS4 "Open With" File Association

I want to open an SVG file, using Illustrator CS4. (I have the Design Premium Suite.) I cannot get it to open from Windows Explorer in CS4. Double-clicking the file opens it in CS3. Here's what I do and what happens:
1. Right-click on the SVG file in Windows Explorer.
2. Choose "Open With." A menu of programs pops up. Illustrator CS4 is not in the list, but CS3 is.
3. So I click on "Choose Program" to find CS4. The "Open With" window opens.
4. "Adobe Illustrator CS4" is not in the "Recommended Programs" list, but it is in the "Other Programs" list. However, I note that its listing has a generic icon, instead of the "Ai" CS4 icon.
5. I click on "Adobe Illustrator CS4" expecting the program to load. Instead, an error message pops up: "<filepath and filename.svg> is not a valid Win32 application."
So I started over:
1-4. Same as above.
5. Click on "Browse" to find the Illustrator.exe program file directly. I did this twice:
     a. First with the "Adobe Illustrator CS4" shortcut at: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Adobe Illustrator CS4.lnk". This takes me back to the "Open With" window, with the bad "Adobe Illustrator CS4" listing highlighted.
     b. Then with the actual program at: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe". This takes me back to the "Open With" window with "Adobe Illustrator CS3" highlighted.
What can I do to fix this?
Additional notes:
1. I was able to use "Open With" to specify several browsers to open the SVG file. So the problem seems to relate specifically to the links to Illustrator CS4, rather than any overall "Open With" functionality.
2. Right-clicking on an EPS file, and choosing "Open With," behaves exactly as right-clicking on an SVG file.
3. Right-clicking an AI file show two instances of "Adobe Illustrator CS3"-- one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. Clicking on each entry opens the correct program for the icon, however.
How do I also fix this?

First an update: I compared registry entries with the CS4 installation on my laptop. I saw that quite a few of the Adobe.Illustrator.<etc> keys were
missing, and many of the ones that were there had CS3 paths listed instead of CS4. So I uninstalled Illustrator CS4 and reinstalled it. That fixed some
problems. I also, in Windows Explorer, used Tools> Folder Options> File Types to change Illustrator CS4 to the default program to open AI, EPS, and
SVG files. I chose "Advanced" and "Edit" in the File Type dialog and noticed that some of the entries for open were missing the "Open" action. So I fixed that.
I've got the AI, EPS, and SVG files where I can open them with the correct programs now, but there are still some weirdities using right-click and Open With:
For AI files:
    There are two instances of Adobe Illustrator CS3 listed. One has a CS3 icon. The other has the CS4 icon. The AI file opens with the program
associated with the icon. If I choose Open With, then "Other Programs, there is a listing for Adobe Illustrator CS4, but it has a generic window icon and does not work. I get the "<path><filename>.ai is not a valid Win32 application" error.
For EPS files:
There are also two entries for Adobe Illustrator CS3, again one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. Again they both open the program that matches the icon. There is also an Adobe Illustrator CS4 listed, but it has the shortcut icon for CS4 (the one with the arrow). It opens CS4. If I choose
Other Programs, the non-working, generic icon Adobe Illustrator CS4 is also listed.
For SVG files:
There are also two Adobe Illustrator CS3 listings, one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. There is also an Adobe Illustrator CS4 listed, but with the shortcut version of the icon. They all open the program associated with the icon shown. If I choose Other Programs, the listings and icons under "Recommended Programs" are correct for both CS3 and CS4, plus there is a CS4 listing with the generic icon.
Is there any way to fix this stuff without uninstalling/reinstalling the whole Design Premium suite? While the reinstall of Illustrator CS4 did fix
some things, it also broke some. It reinstalled a bunch of ancillary programs, like ExtendScript that I didn't tell it to reinstall. I ran Adobe
update and now ExtendScript and and Adobe Drives service update fail to update. I ran the update from Acrobat. Looking in Illustrator, the update
button is grayed out and completely unavailable.

WMF/EMF Files Illustrator CS4

I truly hope this helps someone else out!
After much frustration, I have finally solved the problems I was having with:
A. Viewing WMF/EMF files on a Windows Vista pc.
B. Manipulating WMF/EMF files in Illustrator CS4.
Viewing WMF/EMF Files:
Download IrfanView (Freeware)
During the install, associate WMF/EMF files with IrfanView.
Launch program, select FILE, Select Thumbnails and navigate to folder containing target files.
Manipulate WMF/EMF files in Illustrator:
Select Options, Select Properties/Settings, Select Miscellaneous
Under “Set external editors”
Click Browse, navigate to the Illustrator exe file and select it
Click ok
From the thumbnail viewer window
Right Click on the target image
Go down to “Open with external editor”
Select Illustrator from the fly out
Illustrator launches and the image is available for manipulation.

So the comuter is only for running a script in Illustrator nothing else except it happens in photoshop as well, speaking with forked tongue.
Let m make a suggestion, create a new user account log into that user account aand without loading fonts etc try an open a file in Illustrator or Photoshop.
Leave the fonts as default.
I would say it is a question of a possible conflict or corruption with fonts or plug ins and or the font cache files.
Also the possibility that you are using the stat up disk as the scratch disk instead of another drive true a mca mini only has one drive but a fast external drive of RAID 0 might serve better.
And there may be some dirctories on yu drive that do not have read write privileges when they should so Repair the Permissions as well.

How to open Freehand 8 files in Illustrator CS6

You used to be able to open Freehand 8 files in Illustrator CS4 by changing their extension to .eps, but that trick appears to no longer work with CS6. Has anyone figured out a trick with CS6 to get them to open?

Adobe Illustrator CS4 No enough memory

i have problem in opened large pdf file in illustrator cs4, process with edit/modify and save. but the system hang when save the file.
The operation cannot complete because there isn't enough memory(RAM) available.
and the program quit.
System spec.
Intel i7
16GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7570
Win7 Pro 64bit

i have installed illustrator cs6 and run for few days without any problem.but i have another question. i've attached memory usage for 360mb pdf file while loading, about 2.9GB.
not understand why it generate so much memory since we already have Scratch Disk setting in D drive, suppose all the work data will save inside scratch disk right?

Illustrator CS4 working slower than CS2

Hi all,
I am working with a PDF file in Illustrator CS4, when I try to scroll with my hand tool it takes forever for the image to refresh and update to the new location. But when I work on the same PDF file in Illustrator CS2, scrolling with the hand tool is fine and the image updates to where I move it to really fast. The I checked the Units & Display Performance in both versions and they appear to be the same. Is there any other thing that I could try to make the PDF update faster in CS4? Thanks in advance.

Hello Pwitman,
You are experiencing a CS4 Critical Bug. This CS4 version came with very serious and critical bugs (like the Memory Bug, Crop Marks, Icon Preview. Text spacing, etc, etc, etc.) that Adobe wont care to fix.
May that is why you have not receive a direct answer. The hole program can crash for one font that the CS4 version considers as a corrupt font (even when other programs or older versions can use the same font).
That is why CS2 is more reliable than the "new" version CS4. Adobe is going from bad to worse. I cannot wait to see CS5's bugs that Adobe wont fix.
I made the mistake of buying CS3; and now I do things in CS2 that CS3 or CS4 cannot do. Yep the old version can do things better than CS3 and CS4.
So where is the CS4 update? Well, Adobe will sell you CS5 as an update.
