Files in iWork

Hi,
I'm new to Macs and as such don't want to put any filthy Microsoft software on my machine. I'm trying to find a substitute for word and excel so I can read .doc .rtf and .xls files. Will iWork do all of this for me?
Thanks for your time.
Matthew.

Thanks Magnus,
Isn't it the case though that NeoOffice doesn't run
on the Mac Book Pro? It's isn't supported by the
intel chipset yet is it?
Thanks,
Matthew
No NeoOffice does not at this moment, but I think that the X11 version of OO does run on the Intel macs, and that is also very nice. But I am not absolutely sure about it running on one, but it is free to download so give it a try. Cheers!

  • Some files that iWork needs are missing.

I tried updating iWork '08, but the installer failed during the update of Pages. Since then i have been unable to boot any of the iWork apps. Numbers and Pages both gives the same error message: "Some files that iWork needs are missing", it then suggests that i reinstall iWork '08, but when i do that, the same issues still remain. i have tried reinstalling, uninstalling by deleting the app icon and then installing it again, ive also tried uninstalling using appdelete, and then install it again, but the same issue just remains.
Do you know what i can do?
    Thanks in advance.

    Guys
I have the same problem as above.
What happened was that all was fine, then trying to install an add-in for Safari, I hapened to delete the System/Library folder when the GUI went slow on me :-(((
Anyway, couldn't fix or reboot, so ended up reloading the OS from the DVD's.
Once that was done, almost everything was OK, except for Parallels and iWork08, both of which had worked previously.
In the case of iWork08 I've tried all the tips here (delete any file associated with iWork 06/08, fix rights) and even going as far as looking what files the install package says it installs.
    Yet, the problem remains.
Like some others, the installer thinks I'm UPGRADING rather than installing fresh.
What other tips can you give, where is the root problem and how do I get around it?
    Thanks!

  • "Files that iWorks needs missing" message AND other error msg

    Hi-
I had a crash of both my mac (it had to be replace) and the back up system. When I reinstalled iWorks, I still get the message "Files that iWorks needs are missing". When I proceed it launches the application, but when I tried to make some upgrade download, I got the message "The eligible Pages (Numbers, Keynote) application missing from the folder Applications" - it not the case - all three are there - any idea what may be going on there?

As far as I know, the described message is not issued by iWork 's installer but by updaters.
You must start with the iWork installer which will install Keynote v4.0, Numbers v1.0, Pages v3,0 in the folder "iWork '08' in the folder "Applications".
It's only after that that you will be able to apply the updaters (those delivered last week).

  • Files that iWork needs are missing

When I open Pages or either of the other 2 apps, I get the error window that says, "Files that iWork needs are missing. To restore the missing files, use the iWork installer to reinstall iWork."
About 2 days after I loaded iWork8, my computer hard drive crashed (would not boot up). I downloaded everything except the System onto an external hard drive, wiped the G5 hard drive, and reinstalled the System. I recopied everything back from the external hard drive, but iWork will not open.
I tried reinstallation, and everything went though the install process, but still it would not open.
Then I did a Spotlight search for anything that said iWork, dumped all of that, did another reinstallation from the disk, and it still gives the same error message.
Now what? I have iWork on my laptop, and I really like it and would really like to have it work on my desk top computer.

    Dennis,
No doubt it would have been better had I reinstalled iWork from the CD rather than just drag all my applications from my external drive. But all other 74 primary apps (Office as 1 primary app) that I brought in by dragging work just fine. If iWork is going to be this touchy, then Apple should provide an "Uninstall" program as Windows has to do for this very reason -- you can't ever find all the little files that an application uses.
I did as you suggested: searched for iWork, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. I am a university professor and some of these terms generate a lot of files.
For "pages" I got 20 folders, 2 images, 54 presentations, 2 music, 1 application (the one we want to find), 249 PDF documents, 793 HTML files, 994 documents, and 89 "other". Do I just dump the application, or are there "documents" or any other kind of file I need to dig through?
For "keynote" I got: 4 folders (all dealing with keynote speakers), 1 application (the one we want to find), 17 PDF documents, 8 HTML files, 33 documents, and 68 "other". Do I just dump the application, or are there "documents" or any other kind of file I need to dig through?
For "numbers" I got: 0 folders, 531 presentations, 4 application (1 of which is the 1 we want to find), 3 system preferences (none of which seems to be related to iWork), 544 PDF documents, 874 HTML files, 1915 documents, and 20 "other". Do I just dump the application, or are there "documents" or any other kind of file I need to dig through?
I will wait to hear from you before I dump anything. Thanks.

I update my iPad mini retina with iOS 7.1 resulting in not being to down load NOR OPEN  PPT, WORD files using iWork, page, can anyone pls help?

You want to just use Dropbox until the dust settles.  To use it from iWork for iOS (assuming you have the Dropbox app installed on your device), open the document in Keynote (for example), tap the share icon (box with upward pointing arrow), choose Open in Another App, choose Keynote as your format, then choose Open in Dropbox and you will get an option to save it to your Dropbox account.  To open it from Dropbox in iWork for iOS, open the document in the Dropbox app, tap the share icon, tap Open in Keynote (for example).  It's a bit clunky, but works.

    Profjmb,
I realized that my OS X installation was broken, as I've got other weird behavior from apps even when doing simple tasks. Also, reinstalling iWork from scratch didn't solve it (I erased all related files, to no avail).
Then, after reinstalling OS X everything came back to normal.
I believe the OS broke after I changed my account's short name via finder, but can't tell whether this was the real cause.
    Good luck with your case,

  • Why I cannot open doc. file on iWork'09?

After I bought a new Macbook Pro(with retina diaplay and with mountain lion system), I installed the iWork'09 and transfer the files from my old Macbook. However, all doc. files and ppt. files cannot be opened. Them can be opened on my old Macbook.

  • How to import AppleWorks files into iWork?

Can AppleWorks files be imported into iWork?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages (AppleWorks 6 only), though Panergy Software'sdocXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames); and the latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). However Draw documents can be copied into WP documents and then opened in Pages - more details here.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
Nothing will open Paint or Database documents.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: it seems complex; however Snow Leopard Server is available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price (at the time of writing) and this makes the process a lot easier. I haven't tried either method: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.

  • Why Won't ICloud let me upload ANY files to Iwork section?

Ok so like many others, When I try to upload a file to Icloud (A pages File) I ALWAYS get an error "There was a problem uploading a doument. Please try again." No matter how many times I try, I get this error. What also ***** is it won't give me the cog in the upper right hand corner with the options to upload. My only choice is to drag and drop, which gives me the error. I created this account on an IOS5 Device (My friends, because I don't have one, I have a mac but can't enable the ICloud specifically on this mac). I do not plan to use ICloud to transfer between IOS devices and computer, only between computer and computer and store all my misc. pages files there. However, I should still be able to upload my IWord 09' documents, presentations, ect. When I go to the Iwork page, it encourages me to buy the programs, even though I already have them. Please can anyone tell me how to get it to upload my pages and keynote files?

I have it on my mac, but the one that doesn't let me setup icloud on it. So basically I need to enable the icloud on a computer or device that has pages, then it will let me upload pages anywhere? (thats kind of bull but I guess if it works). The only problem is my mac that is 10.7.5 is a laptop I'm provided with and for some reason the administrators decided to block the use of Icloud on it (The system prefrences not the website). So I guess until I can get my account on a device with Pages or something, Im out of luck. Thanks for you help. You are the only person who actually has ever provided a straightforward answer/support rather than just having teh subject changed like in most discussions.

  • Opening AppleWorks files in iWork

Newbie to iWork....will iWork open w/p files created in AppleWorks 6?

This continues to be my nightmare, as well.
I have thousands of AW6 documents saved. Last week, my AW6 stopped working. I took my computer to a local independent guy who works on Apple products. I bought, and he installed, iWorks9, because it was my understanding from the discussion boards here, and from this guy, that ALL my AW6 filles would be usable with iWorks. Well, I got my computer back a couple of hours ago, and I have spreadsheet documents, and word processing documents which WON'T open, because it says -rather annoyingly - that they are presentation documents. Well, they're not presentation documents, because I created them.
I called my computer guy, and he suggested I go through the tutorials. I'm cursing now, having already paid him. Like a car, I want to get in, and go. I don't want to have to 'relearn' driving after each mechanical repair. I did check the tutorial, and unless I'm temporarily in a fog, I don't see this problem addressed.
Will someone please tell me what the freakin' heck is going on, and how to get ALL my old AW6 documents to automatically open, regardless of whether they were word processing, spreadsheet, painting, drawing, or presentation?
    Please.

  • Can't send Files from IWORKS!!!!!!

Ok so i love iworks its awesome!
The problem is that it is crucial for me to be able to send my files, and it isn't working. I can't send them at all. Is there anyway that i can make my files compatible with other computers or a converter to save them to my computer and send them to other computers ???????

If you mean that you can't attach an iWorks document to an email message, try archiving (zipping) it first (command-click on the document and you should get the archiving option). Some mail applications have problems with iWork documents which are actually specialized folders with a couple of files within, rather than being a monolithic document.
    Hope this helps.

  • Opening appleworks 6 files on iworks - pages

    Hi all,
Got a new imac after the sad death of my G5. Have downloaded my copied data held in cloud. I created a a lot of files in appleworks 6 using the drawing facility. All these files end in '.cwk'
Iworks pages will not open them as they're not a word processing document.. Has anyone any idea of how I can rescue these old appleworks 6 files? Thanks Jenny

    OK.
I'm familair with AppleWorks' capabilities; use it all the time.
The problem comes from the formatting used by AW for the various kinds of files it can create, hence my request for clarification.
AW word processing files can be opened by Pages.
AW spreadsheets can be opened by Numbers.
AW presentations can be opened by Keynote.
Unfortunately, there is no equivalent in iWorks for AW drawing-type documents.
I just created a simple drawing file in AW (.cwk suffix type) and tried to find something other than AW which could open it. Unfortunately I could not - none of the iWorks modules could open it, and even GraphicConverter could not open it.
I re-opened the file in AW and re-saved it as a JPEG file via a Save As, and Preview had no problem opening it. Of course, it opened as a static image file; none of the object elements in the original file were addressable as such.
It looks like for your purposes you will probably need to install AppleWorks 6 on your new machine.
I installed the version I use in OS X 10.6.7 by simple drag-copying from a drive to which I had copied all the stuff on my G4 running OS 9. It was a new enough version of AW 6 that it was an "application package program" (.app) version, which meant that it includes versions for both OS 9 and OS X. The specific version I have is AppleWorks v. 6.2.9 (which showed as 6.2.8 in OS 9).
Note that AppleWorks is a PPC program, meaning it is not native to an Intel machine. When I went to run it the first time on my iMac, OS X stated it needed to install Rosetta in order to be able to use that program; I clicked OK and it did that. The importance of this is that AW6 will not run in Lion, since Lion does not support Rosetta.
As an alternate you could find someone who has AppleWorks 6 available to them. They could take those files and convert them (via a Save As) to JPEG or other format usable by the software you have.
Note that you can open/create a document in Pages, and then drop a JPEG into it. The Pages wp doc will then contain that picture.

  • ICloud files for iWork backed up via Time Machine?

I'm trying to figure out that if I work on files like pages and numbers and save it to iCloud, do they go to my MacBook where I can also back them up via Time Machine. I want to make sure that if files are accidentally deleted somehow that I can have a historical backup via Time Machine.
I don't see anywhere in the finder on my MacBook air that can show me where my iCloud work is being placed at. That is why I'm trying to figure out if there is a historical backup via Time Machine in case iCloud loses or corrupts a file.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Doug

Your iWork documents are kept in an invisible folder called Library, you can reveal it by opening the Finders Go menu while holding down the alt key, your iCloud documents are in a folder called Mobile Documents.
You shouldn't be working in these folders, but you would need to know where they are to restore from a Time machine back up, which does back them up.

  • Can I open a .pub file in iworks?

I have been sent some files created in publisher with a .pub extension. Can I open thses in iWorks09?

I suppose that you may just want to read, not necessarily edit, these .pub files. If you Google "OSX apps for .PUB format" you will get a lot of hits.
I've downloaded a couple of these OSX app readers over the past few months to investigate posts about export from Pages to epub. Some work better than others – you have many choices.
